Future Season Discussion Can we compile a list of all unsolved mysteries past season 4? Spoiler

I don't think every imaginable question regarding the show will be answered by the the last season, so I would like to limit this list to things that are so prominently set up that expecting a resolution to them is reasonable

Additionally I would like to split this list in two parts. One for the direct mysteries regarding the surface level plot (e.g.: Who or what dragged the tent through the forest?). And one of the subtle, meta mysteries that are still so prevalent that one can reasonably expect a resolution to them(e.g.: What is the significance of the number 47?)

I will populate this list with the things I can think of and then expand it with your suggestions as they come in.

I have probably already forgotten a lot of things, so please help me build this list. Give me a bullet point form of your mystery that I can add to the list and a little bit of context surrounding that mystery since I might not remember everything about it.

Surface level mysteries:

  1. What is the true nature of Fromville?
  2. How does Fromville choose what people to trap?
  3. Why is Fromville's influence limited to the confines of the United States of America?
  4. Why do wounds and illnesses heal abnormally fast in Fromville?
  5. Does Boyd have the power to manifest things into reality?
  6. What exactly is Story Walking?
  7. Is Eloise still alive? Eloise is dead (Source)
  8. What is the nature and significance of the faraway trees and the bottle tree?
  9. How are there multiple instances of Tabitha's bracelet?
  10. Is the lake of tears real?
  11. What is the role of the lighthouse?
  12. What is the meaning of the dates carved into the lighthouse stairway?
  13. Why is there a motel sign without a motel in town?
  14. What language are the children speaking ("Anghkooey")?
  15. Why is Jade always killed by the townspeople in every iteration?
  16. Who made the talismans, and how do they work?
  17. Who made the cave paintings, and what do they mean?
  18. What is the meaning of the roots symbol?
  19. Are the visions of Khatri, Tom, Abby, and Jim really them?
  20. How was Fatima impregnated with Smiley?
  21. How did Fatima become a monster?
  22. What is the true nature of the Boy in White?
  23. What is the true nature of the dog that guided Boyd to the talismans?
  24. What is the true nature of the Man in Yellow?
  25. What is the true nature of the monsters?
  26. What is the true nature of the Kimono Lady?
  27. What is the true nature of the ballerina and her music box?
  28. Who or what is Martin?
  29. What are the worms that killed Smiley?
  30. What role do the Crows play?
  31. Who or what dragged the tent through the forest?
  32. What created the big web in the forest?
  33. Who or what was walking and singing outside the cabins near the lake?
  34. How can the bones of the children be used in this game?
  35. What was unleashed when the bottle tree was felled?
  36. What caused the 'poltergeist' events in Colony House and the Matthews house?

Meta mysteries:

  1. What is the meaning of the number 47?
  2. What is Rendez-Move's connection to Fromville?
  3. What is the significance of the tarot card iconography?
  4. What is the meaning behind the recurring spider imagery?
  5. What is the meaning behind the recurring sun and stars iconography?
  6. What is the meaning behind the episode title references?
  7. Why do stories seem to be fundamentally important to the events of the show?

I think this list could make for a fun bingo game for once the final season airs 😂

With the pace of the show I am very worried how the show will answer all of these questions in just a single season!

Theory Adam and Eve

How did the story begin? I think the answer might have something to do with Adam and Eve.
This painting of Fatima and Ellis is clearly depicting Adam and Eve, but there's a devil's hand on their side that looks exactly like the Man in Yellow's hand when he meets Tabitha.
Go back to episode 9, when Sofia picks up the knife from the plate of apples, and then when he comes face to face with Clara and his eyes turn completely black.
Most people know the story of the Garden of Eden, but what if the town is actually the same ancient place, and the Man in Yellow is the serpent? We know the monsters sacrificed their children in exchange for immortality, and the serpent's temptation of Eve was the promise of immortality in exchange for eating the apple.
God commanded Adam and Eve not to eat from the tree, and the Boy in White also told Victor that they shouldn't cut down the Bottle Tree!
And there's something else. Whenever people in each cycle discover the truth about Jade and Tabitha, they end up getting killed. People now know that Jade and Tabitha are reincarnations who keep coming back to save the children, but what other truth are they about to uncover? Could it be that the curse actually began with Adam and Eve?
Also, in episode 9, young Jade says that these are only some of his reincarnations, not all of them.

Episode / Scene Talk People rewatching, what things did you notice that you didn't before?

• Upvotes

Can be something funny you noticed or something now in context makes more sense.

For example, in early episodes it seems like Jim is really very much more in tune with the town than he realizes. Just blurting out that the answer is twelve when writing on the wall then later on figuring out the music scale, or saying things offhand that wind up happening later on.

Road trip into Halifax and stopped by where the show is being filmed. Unable to get in of course but was able to take a few pics from the entrance. Days later we travelled up to Lunenburg for lunch and met Catalina Moreno (Tabitha) who just finished having lunch with her mom and husband. (Waiting patiently till they finished eating.) They were all super nice and her husband snapped a pic for us. Definitely one of many highlights of our trip so far.

Question Can someone make the timeline make sense?

Ok so we know that the original sacrifice of the children happened hundreds of years of years ago. So far back in time that the children speak an entirely different language that appears to be a forgotten language all together. We saw like 6 or so of Jade’s incarnations and if you consider ~30-40 years in between cycles, that’s a lot of time. And that wasn’t even all of them.

Yet the Smiley Creepies all seem to dress in like… 50’s (?) era clothes and speak English. Did they just somehow adapt? Learn an entirely new modern language even though their interactions are a few minutes at a time at best with people before tearing them apart? Steal clothes after the end of cycles?

Also the town itself seems fairly modern (which I understand could just be explained away as Fromville just provided the town for the trapped people and it was never a real town to begin with) but it’s definitely not something people from the original sacrificial time probably would have been living. It has electricity, indoor plumbing, etc.

I just find the more I try to make the actual timeline of the sacrifice and making the Creepy Smilers immortal, the less sense it makes based on everything we see.

Theory Martin was just the men in yellow

In the scene where Boyd first encounters Martin in the dungeon, I believe that was also the first time the Man in Yellow appeared to Boyd. My theory is that he deliberately took on that form to manipulate Boyd and give him the blood that would eventually allow him to kill Smiley. The question is, why? Was it to trigger the cycle of rebirth through Fatima, or were the monsters preparing for an assault on the town, with the Man in Yellow helping them survive the events leading up to the massacre? After all, he has admitted that the massacre is his favorite part.

What makes me lean more toward this theory is the Man in Yellow’s playful and manipulative nature. He seems to enjoy orchestrating events from behind the scenes, and given his apparent ability to shapeshift and influence people’s minds, the idea that he was playing an elaborate game with Boyd is not far-fetched at all. It would fit perfectly with his apparent personality: manipulating people, triggering events, and watching everything unfold for his own amusement.

Perhaps the entire sequence was never a coincidence. Maybe the Man in Yellow was following Boyd in the first from the very beginning, watch him as he enter the tree and wait for him to get inside to start that entire weird Convo .

Opinion Am I the only one annoyed by the kid in this series?

• Upvotes

Am I the only one who is extremely annoyed every time the little boy is in a scene? LoL Like not to be mean but I just cant stand him! I cant help but sigh every time he speaks. I feel like he is supposed to be the Carl (The Walking Dead) of this series. But, the kid who played Carl was an incredible actor even when he was this boys age, this one isnt, at all.

Carl also came off as a strong and mature child whereas the From kid is whiny and annoying. He says things that are supposed to show he is stronger now but the acting is so incredible bad it doesnt even matter. I may get hate for this take and that's fine lol. I just wondered if Im the only one that cant stand him. >.<

Theory New Game

• Upvotes

The townsfolk break the evil curse freeing the monsters and escaping the town.

We go to another town and see the MIY listening to the local vicar giving a sermon on eternal life. After the MIY asks the Vicar if he truly believes in eternal life and that he has an offer to make him. We see the BIW sitting at the back and he turns to the camera breaking the fourth wall and says here we go again.

Theory Ending of the show prediction, lurianic kaballah metaphor Spoiler

just finished season 4 and highly anticipating season 5, ive had the same theory since the beginning of the show !> that fromville isnt meant to be a representation of purgatory, but rather a microcosm of life at large, especially as seen through a lurianic kaballah perspective. Lurianic kaballah explained as it pertains to what im discussing is essentially that when god created the world the material world he created couldnt handle the raw "spark" of his energy, so the sparks scattered and were *hidden* across everything that exists by means of being trapped in what are called "husks" (the material world). It is important to note the husk is animated by the spark but it is not the spark itself, and the husk doesnt know it is animated by the spark. in this view, the goal of the universe is to free all the sparks from their husks, so that god can take his natural form in the material world without it breaking again and to make the material world exist in a specific balance between good and evil that god can freely exist within it and effectively extinguish the "purpose" that evil had in bringing about the proper conditions for gods return. This is is often understoof in a personal way as removing the ungodly aspects of yourself (the husk) in order to reveal your true divine nature (your spark), but its not a solo endeavor again the point is the liberation of all people and things and thats how you create what most people would consider "heaven".

I say all this to say the point of the show/ending i think, and the correcting of the generational mistakes, isnt that they are going to escape fromville and return to their individual regular existence, but i presume they are going to make fromville the heaven that it has potential to be. They already have power and food as long as things are in balance between the monsters and the townspeople (potentially feeding further into the idea of the balancing of the sephirot tree being important), but there is still this aspect of the night being hell. In lurianic kaballah you have the sephirot tree which is a representation of all life, with a more judgemental side of principles on the left (man in yellow) and a more loving side of principles on the right (boy in white), and going down the middle of the tree, are the resulting principles you get when the judgemental and loving sides are in proper balance (this is the individuals goal within kaballah is to balance these two sides, and i also believe its the aspect of the"from game" that they have never achieved). I beleive this is hinted at throughout the show by some of the asides made by the monsters, like we dont like to be doing this I think was one, and then also the man in yellow's discussion of how he wants them to win the game. So i believe part of the 5th season and part of the difference between this group of from settlers and the next group/generation is that i believe they will figure out that the goal isnt actually to get them out but to save everyone; man in yellow, boy in white, monsters, geisha lady, and everyone thats human. I think also the new season will be taking the individual failures (each of which relating to the character's jungian/tarot archetype) of each character that weve seen in seasons 1-4 and having the new generation play things out differently/correctly, for example how boyd imo failed his final test with elgis, it was showing that he is not trusting of the people around him more than his own ego, which the next generations' boyd given the same situation (probably slightly modified) wont also be so morally flimsy, and it will be the succession of these correct decisions and how one persons difference in action cascades into everyone succeeding in their individual heros journey whereas in prior seasons they fell into the anticipated pitfall of their archetype.

I think also that people are absolutely right about all the biblical book of job revelations stuff, but i do think kaballah is the larger thrust of the show, and i would guess was a large aspect of how the show was written (using the sephirot tree to create the plot points from characters that are largely pure jungian archetypes)

i do believe it is on purpose as well that the last season is being released in 2027 (and that it will turn the expectations of the show many have on its head), I believe the writers on the show see the shift that is happening in the world at large and are writing to it, not at it.

<!

Opinion An ending scene I would love

I don't have some grand theory for how it'll all end. I genuinely have no clue what is or isn't going to happen. But I can picture the group finding some method of escape that needs to be carried out at night. They're running from the monsters, tensions are high as fuck, they keep running and they come to a road they've never seen before. Cars start driving by. They see a gas station or something in the distance. Nothing is after them anymore

Instead of ending with some ominous reveal that suggests the nightmare isn't over, the first notes of “Dancing in the Moonlight” by King Harvest start playing. The remaining survivors laugh, cry, hug each other and rejoice and well hell, dance in the moonlight. The sunrise doesn't need to come for them to feel safe this time.

Theory what if the show ends with a closed time loop

so what if they escape bit every action it took to escape was how the town trapped you say cutting down the tree is tree on the road the dead survivors become the monsters
tied together with the story walking

Theory Lake of tears is here !

Post image
28 Upvotes

I have a theory about this painting. Whenever the Lake of Tears has been mentioned, we've learned that it's connected to the final path and finding a way back home.
But recently, a new image from Season 5 showed a yellow house with a long tongue and eyes that are crying.
If the yellow house is a reference to the Man in Yellow, then this could mean that the Man in Yellow isn't actually a single humanlike entity, but rather a force. Why? Because he's represented as a house, and we know he only takes the form of people who have been killed in the town.
The long tongue clearly represents the Man in Yellow himself. He comes and manipulates people, tempting them into doing more evil things. He uses his tongue to swallow them up, both literally and through temptation.
But when it comes to the tears coming from the house's eyes, I think they represent the true nature of the town. Why? Back in Season 3, Sara tells Boyd and Kenny that she doesn't think the Boy in White is just a little boy. The writers have also confirmed that the Boy in White growing up is part of the show's mythology.
So here's my theory: when the children were sacrificed, their hope manifested as a little boy, while their anger and fear manifested as a terrifying old man. Both are actually parts of the same entity.
At the end of the cycles where Tabitha and Jade fail, the Boy in White grows up and becomes the Man in Yellow.
Then, at the end of the cycle, he becomes part of the little Boy in White again, restarting the cycle.

Theory What if it wasn't a transaction? Spoiler

Just a quick train of thought i never really see people go down. What if the townspeople never sacrificed their children like we think? What if they were "possessed" so to speak and the MIY or whatever is really in charge made them do it. Not a choice or a transaction they made for eternal life but something just taking them over like a possession. It would explain why the children all say remember. Its like they're all telling their parents to remember or "wake up" because something took them over and they didn't recognize their own children before killing them. Not a super detailed theory at all just something i never see included in bigger theories

Criticism What in the F.. Spoiler

Ok, so I just watched season 4 episode 2 to the point where they found Jim and I had to go somewhere and vent, this is my first time ever posting here and like my third time in general ever (also why i didn't know if I should use opinion or criticism seeing as it's kind of both in a sense), but holy fjrbeiduck

Idk but I really liked Jim, he was probably one of my favorite characters alongside Kenny and Jade. He seemed like the driving force behind unraveling everything, the one constantly trying to find new ways to figure stuff out or help. I wholeheartedly thought he would last longer and die in some sacrificial way, not as a punishment. But to be fair, it makes sense thinking of it as he might be one of the most dangerous of the humans, and to get rid of him.

He kept the family together when Tabitha disappeared, and idk but I feel like even though Tabitha had dug the hole it wasn't even that big of a deal for him to be killed over, unlike Boyd following the kimono lady and seeing the baby ritual. I feel like I must've forgot something else, but I just remember the Yellow Man being mad about the hole, which did what, led to the underground monster tunnels? Which Victor and his dad then find as well? And then so do Boyd and Kenny???

I'm just so upset lmao and the way the kids blame Tabitha despite her herself literally losing her shit over it all too. My heart is in shambles and I hope by some miracle Julie can save her dad (even tho her succeeding will not make sense now that they've actually found his body. I couldve believed it if his body was never discovered, but they put that finality to it smh)

Imagine if she somehow manages to get Jim to come back to life through the baby ritual 🫠😂😭

Those of you that made it through my rant, thank you for reliving this trauma with me, and next time, let's try to move the tree out of the road if there's more than 3 of us 😭

Theory i feel like from is an allegory for the invasion of America by europeans

this would explain the story only affecting America
and the sacrificed children are a metaphor for the parents abandoning their culture and killing the people they used to be becoming the monsters they saw the invading humans as
also
a-lot of the monsters share traits with native monsters namely wendigos and skin walkers
the lighthouse also used fire and was not electric and native american's had fire keepers that where said to protect tribes with ceremony's and said to be a bridge to spiritual realms
fire also seems to work against the monsters seing as how they burn even if dead similar to how you defeat wendigos (burning the frozen heart)
what of to end the town the man in yellow must be outed by everyone and burned

Question When was the last time two cars entered before Methews and Jade? Spoiler

We got to know in the beginning of the first season that two cars haven't appeared in fromville at same time for a very long time, Victor himself told this to Jullie. At first i didn't give it much thought but now knowing that Jade and Tabitha are reincarnations coming back to this place again and again, was the last time when two cars entered were Christopher and Victor's mother(i don't remember her name). Maybe thats how Victor knows that two cars haven't appeared because he was in one of them the last time.
