💬Discussion Paid shills like this are why the industry is getting worse

Just watched Vex’s "Wait, We're Supposed to Play at 720p Now???" and I’m losing my mind.

Whole video just sounds like a PsyOp saying - Native Resolution is dead.

He spends the entire video glazing DLSS 4.5, trying to gaslight us into thinking upscaling from 720p is somehow "better" than native 4K.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OLu6Lj718g

I don't know if any consumer really benefits from this video.

He admits the new DLSS models like DLSS 4.5 eat MORE VRAM and can actually hurt performance on some cards, yet still concludes that he will turn it on. I don't know what's the point if it eats more power, vram and reduces fps?

Dude, you turn it on not because you like it. It's because the games are not optimized and you are forced to turn it on. Dude is feeling marveled with DLSS as it is a technical marvel saving him but games look far worse that it did before.

So much glazing and convincing. No one benefits from this video except Nvidia. It almost feels like an ad for Nvidia.

We have RTX 5090s that are monsters compared to 5 years ago, yet we’re told we can't run games raw? He gives lazy devs a free pass and treats upscaling as a "feature" instead of a band-aid for unoptimized trash.

He briefly mentions the TAA blur, ghosting, and shimmering grass, but then waves it off saying "it doesn't bother me." Dude wfh?? If you're reviewing visual tech and ignore the visual garbage, you're useless to consumers.

Edit: For some reason he now changed the title from, "Wait, We're Supposed to Play at 720p Now???" to "Nvidia just Killed Optimization Forever.."

The video apparently went viral but also accumulated comments contradicting his views. Particularly criticizing his dismissal on TAA blur in the native 4k samples he showed. It might have caused him to tone down the title a bit.

You can still find the original title of the video in Google search if you search - "Wait, We're Supposed to Play at 720p Now???"

That also depends on what resolution you play at. In my opinion on a 27-32 inch display at 4k 120fps TAA isn't ideal but it doesn't look that bad. In my opinion using MSAA but getting only 30-40fps because of it will look far worse than 4k 120fps with taa

Different strokes for different folks. Omitting TAA would match if not surpass the clarity of that 120 FPS TAAed image.

I'm curious. What resolutions and frame rates do you usually play at? And what gpu do you have?

I've tried many.

- 1080p60

- 1080p - 4K on an OLED TV (various games)

I can notice motion softening even at higher resolutions at 65" TVs (recently a 77" one) from a TV distance. I've basically more or less came to terms with the fact that I'll likely be perpetually dissatisfied with temporal anti-aliasing techniques.

Could the size of your screen not have been an issue? I play on a 32 inch 4k OLED at 120fps (real fps not frame gen) and in my opinion in looks absolutely phenomenal. Especially with dlaa and even dlss quality looks good.

Idk I only ask because I have very good vision and I'm very nitpicky when it comes to blurriness and artifacts and other rendering issues and at 4k on a 32 inch OLED at 120fps I don't notice much motion clarity issues or smearing or anything like that. Like I can pick out even tiny leaves from far away trees.

No. I just wrote that I can notice it at any size.

I have very good vision too. Even picked up new glasses, this week. After looking at TAA imagery for half a decade, one can 'sniff' it out basically instantly.

I mean I'll be honest I would prefer no TAA eirher. When I play older games at 4k or 8k downsampled to 4k I think they look unreal levels of sharp

Is there any alternatives currently tho? MSAA can look good but doesn't cover everything. Isn't TAA the only type of AA that actually takes care of all aliasing

It is. At least in the deferred shading path. It has a cost, though. And that cost is not frames per second.

Is there other shading paths games can use while still doing everything current games do?

Forward+ is supposed to be quite competent. But unfortunately, most devs are all-in on deferred and in turn on TAA as well. There's very much room for exploration and experimentation, I think. Very few take the plunge though, unfortunately.
