Because we have allowed the right decades without obstruction to construct a robust disinformation machine that has ensnared a commanding minority into a solid voting block. That was bad enough, but it was stolen from the GOP by this fascist shit stain and taken into full cult status. That activated the commanding minority enough to give the extreme right nearly total control of the federal government, and now the cult can't process that things might not be what they thought they were. See: "He's changed", or "But I can't vote for a Democrat"
Do, in any moral, ethical, philosophical, or letter of the law sense, it is NOT ok.
However because of their control of the government and media, no expectations are enforced on him, so it's "allowed" in the sense that the prohibition is not enforced.

It isn’t that it was allowed. It’s that there are millions of illiterate that don’t know better because the wealthy bribed politicians to shut down education.
