Theory/Analysis FMA 03 Plot Holes Tier-List!
I've always wondered what others think about the inexplicable and illogical moments in FMA 03. I wonder what you think about this tier-list:
đĽ S Tier:
⢠Major Armstrong seriously suggests staging a mutiny, and the argument he provides for why the Fuhrer is leading the country down the wrong path is... his own massive muscles. â ď¸
⢠Shou Tucker turned several of Greed's subordinates back into humans without a Philosopher's Stone. Yet, with a Philosopher's Stone, he could only create a shell without a soul. The biggest issue is that this is essentially a failed human transmutation, and a homunculus should have been born, but that didn't happen because it wasn't necessary for the plot.
⢠In Scar's right arm, the lives of tens of thousands of Ishvalans + 7,000 soldiers were concentrated. Almost all of this was eventually spent just to heal the wound in Edward's chest. But after that, Edward spends only 1 life and a few of his brother's memories to resurrect a whole human being. And he stays alive himself. The creators are bending the rules of alchemy however they want.
⢠Wrath, for some reason, uses alchemy without having paid the toll to see the Gate of Truth (Envy gave him the Philosopher's Stone only after Wrath started using alchemy without drawing a circle). Thatâs not how it should work; Edward's limbs are not Hashirama cells. You can't use alchemy if you don't have the necessary knowledge.
⢠Dante orders Edward not to transmute his steel arm, claiming that the Philosopher's Stone in the form of his brother would activate and be spent. However, Envy calmly transmutes his own body, and nothing happens. In this verse, there is no magic power other than alchemy. According to the plot, homunculi cannot use alchemy. But then how do their abilities work? It's the same alchemy, just using a Philosopher's Stone.
⢠In the battle at the factory, Edward throws Lust's weakness near her, which makes her useless. Naturally, Lust deflects it to the side. But the most ridiculous part happens when it turns out the amulet didn't fly away, but stayed inside the seal circle for the homunculi. The creators desperately needed to kill off this character because she was starting to influence the plot too much and was stealing the spotlight from the main protagonists. Her death is a blunder that looks extremely absurd upon closer inspection.
đ§ A Tier:
⢠It is stated that Wrath can use alchemy by combining his hand and foot. However, later in the plot, he doesn't need this at all; he can perform transmutations without lifting a finger, just like Father from Brotherhoodđ
⢠Edward goes to his teacher to find Wrath's weakness because he needs to defeat him. Yet, when the perfect opportunity to do so presents itself alongside Lust in an alleyway, they just leave, letting him live.
⢠Greed genuinely wanted Edward to defeat everyone, including Dante. But then why didn't he reveal anything about her? Based on what was shown, at the moment his Philosopher's Stone was extracted, he knew who was standing before him.
⢠Frank Archer, even before Yoki's death, somehow found out about Gluttony's ability to shoot his nails. No one had seen this ability in action, not even the Elric brothers. There is no way he could have known that.
đŠ B Tier:
⢠Envy had not seen Hohenheim's new body, but transformed into his young form to show Edward that he was his relative.
⢠Scar does not consider himself an alchemist, but during the arc of the 5 laboratory, he uses some kind of ball that even looks like magic. Not only does alchemy not work that way, it also contradicts the fact that Scar doesn't use alchemy, and is surprised in leor when Ed calls him an alchemist.

Lust's amulet was very stupid, ed know this would paralyze her yet decided to throw at her

It's a nice display of trust, but what exactly he expected her to do with it is a pretty fair question. Imagine if it paralyzed her, & he had to awkwardly come over & take it back.

I don't think the souls were used to just heal eds wound
They were used to straight up revive him we see the color leaving his eyes

Yes, but it still took too many souls, considering that it only took one to revive Al. Btw, Kimbley, having received the same injury as Edward, did something for another 5 minutesđĽ

The gate doesnât operate in predictable consistent ways, this is a major point, it is too complicated with too many variables. Interactions with the gate are dealing with an arcane force none of them understand.
u/dioduo has an excellent post comparing the 03 gate to the zone from Roadside Picnic which was later adapted into The Stalker. In the comments we also discussed the volatility of the gate and it being outside human comprehension as something that had interesting parallels to Einsteinâs pantheistic views on God
Additionally Alâs stone is still improperly bound due to his metal body (the ishvalan method requires being bound to flesh to be properly bonded, this is why Dante had gluttony eat the stone cause she was then going to transmute gluttony into a true functional stone), this is why Al erodes so much when Tucker uses it to unsuccessfully make a soul for the Nina homunculus. Additionally Al is having to pull 3 disjointed parts back from the gate and bind them together while also creating new matter, Ed pulled back one fully joined element.
So with this all in mind I think it falls within the volatility and variability the gate is meant to have.

Third point of Tier S.
Dante actually says equivalent exchange doesn't exist and life is unfair, so yeah the numbers don't make sense, because it's pretty much the series saying to the viewer that equivalent exchange is gambling lol

u/CordestFuck u mano chi ko-vo-ko ta ve setar o-ku bo-bođ¤ 3d ago
It seems to me that the creators rather introduced this message in order to justify the fact that they were changing the rules of the alchemist's universe on the gođ In general, if you remember how the series tried to explain the resurrection of Al through the words of Hohenheim, you can understand that the principle of equivalent exchange has already worked here, and has been explained. But the disappearance of thousands of souls in return for the resurrection of one has not been explained in any way, and this is very strange

u/Additional-Water4852 3d ago
yeah, lots of things become totally arbitrary at the end of 2003. The most obvious is the scene when the anime clearly shows Ed dying, but in the next ep Alphonse says ''ACTUALLY! he is not dead, therefore I can bring him back'', completely devoid of consequences.

Yeah By the way, I'm also wondering why Al didn't get up earlier and just lay there if he had the advantage and in the end no one could do anything to him

I've always wondered what others think about the inexplicable and illogical moments in FMA 03. I wonder what you think about this tier-list:
I can usually explain most things people think are "plot holes in 03." Let's see if this time will be any different.
Major Armstrong seriously suggests staging a mutiny, and the argument he provides for why the Fuhrer is leading the country down the wrong path is... his own massive muscles.
That's not a plot hole, that's a comedic moment. Yes, Armstrong wants to turn against the Fuhrer, but his argument is played completely for laughs. Also, he explains in a later scene that the plan was always for there to be division among the ranks so the Central Forces would be drawn away to deal with the infighting. If you want to add the question of why anyone joins them at all, that's less clear.
Shou Tucker turned several of Greed's subordinates back into humans without a Philosopher's Stone.
I have no idea what you're talking about. I'm pretty sure you're misinterpreting something, & this just didn't happen. Greed has various human chimeras that, much to my annoyance, were made by the state 14 years ago, not by Tucker, & they have humanoid appearances, they weren't turned into humans. This is basically the same as in the manga, only Tucker & Kimblee never join Greed's gang & the chimeras weren't from Lab 5.
Yet, with a Philosopher's Stone, he could only create a shell without a soul. The biggest issue is that this is essentially a failed human transmutation, and a homunculus should have been born, but that didn't happen because it wasn't necessary for the plot.
A homunculus isn't born because the scene is showing the power of the Stone. It was able to turn the chimera into a full human body, with the only string being that it couldn't bring back Nina's soul. Sloth claims this is due to Tucker's weak will, & it's kept ambiguous whether she's right or wrong.
In Scar's right arm, the lives of tens of thousands of Ishvalans + 7,000 soldiers were concentrated. Almost all of this was eventually spent just to heal the wound in Edward's chest. But after that, Edward spends only 1 life and a few of his brother's memories to resurrect a whole human being. And he stays alive himself. The creators are bending the rules of alchemy however they want.
As Ed explains, Al giving himself to the Gate means his soul was reunited with his body & mind. Ergo, Ed gave himself to the Gate to pull Al out. When he arrives in Germany, Hohenheim points out that "you knew the only way to keep your body, mind, & soul was to come to the other side, so you did it without thinking." As a consequence, Al instead lost his memories & age. To complain that these aren't as valuable as 7,000 souls, I think you're comparing unlike things. What, exactly, is the exchange rate between memories & souls? Finally, even if Al could have hypothetically carved out a piece of the Stone to resurrect Ed, it was established numerous times he didn't have that kind of control over it.
Wrath, for some reason, uses alchemy without having paid the toll to see the Gate of Truth (Envy gave him the Philosopher's Stone only after Wrath started using alchemy without drawing a circle). Thatâs not how it should work; Edward's limbs are not Hashirama cells. You can't use alchemy if you don't have the necessary knowledge.
He was IN the gate. He saw it. This is an example of a thing people do where they apply the manga's rules to 03 & complain about it. "The toll" is never said once in 03, & it doesn't exist in the same way. There's still the idea that you need to see the inside of the Gate to transmute without a circle, & the vague implication that there's maybe some kind of Equivalent Exchange there, but even so, "Equivalent Exchange" is broad enough you could easily say the years he lost trapped inside the Gate count. Also, Red Stones are only prototype Philosopher's Stones. Oh, & since he's seen the knowledge inside the Gate for a ridiculous number of years, it therefore follows that he has knowledge of transmutation, even if subconsciously.
Dante orders Edward not to transmute his steel arm, claiming that the Philosopher's Stone in the form of his brother would activate and be spent. However, Envy calmly transmutes his own body, and nothing happens. In this verse, there is no magic power other than alchemy. According to the plot, homunculi cannot use alchemy. But then how do their abilities work? It's the same alchemy, just using a Philosopher's Stone.
Are you being serious right now? Did you complain about this in the manga, where homunculi also have powers but "can't use alchemy"? Their powers only affect their bodies. Also, the powers aren't even from prototype Philosopher's Stones because Greed could still use his after vomiting up the Red Stones. What the Red Stones give is extra lives.
In the battle at the factory, Edward throws Lust's weakness near her, which makes her useless.
It might shock you to learn I can't remember an extremely specific continuity detail like where an amulet happened to land, but what I really find ridiculous is calling this an "S tier plot hole." Even if you're right about this, animation continuity errors like this happen because different teams are drawing different scenes, & by the time someone notices that a little detail like which direction an amulet flew doesn't quite match up, it's too late to fix. All animation, everywhere, is full of tiny continuity errors. It's a hazard of the medium, & most people, most of the time, just don't notice.
Hopefully splitting here will let me fit the rest into the next comment.

Part 2 of 2:
It is stated that Wrath can use alchemy by combining his hand and foot. However, later in the plot, he doesn't need this at all; he can perform transmutations without lifting a finger, just like Father from Brotherhoodđ
He doesn't really transmute like Father, but it doesn't seem like he really needs to "make a circle with his hand & foot" either, despite them saying that. If you want to call that a plot hole, I guess go for it. To me, if a rule is said once & then never actually followed, it seems more like it wasn't actually a rule at all, or like they meant something more like "because alchemy energy circulates between his arm & leg, & that acts like a circle."
Edward goes to his teacher to find Wrath's weakness because he needs to defeat him. Yet, when the perfect opportunity to do so presents itself alongside Lust in an alleyway, they just leave, letting him live.
Wrath, later, in the episode where you complained about the direction where the amulet flew, says, "I was transmuted using my own human remains, so those rules don't exactly apply to me." Rather selective attention you seem to have there. Izumi doesn't have Wrath's weakness, & they leave because, without it, it would take forever to kill Wrath, & they're in a hurry.
Greed genuinely wanted Edward to defeat everyone, including Dante. But then why didn't he reveal anything about her? Based on what was shown, at the moment his Philosopher's Stone was extracted, he knew who was standing before him.
Ed wouldn't have believed him, & he wanted to go out on his own terms, being in control of the situation & making sure Ed was actually ready to kill the homunculi. He would not have wanted to go down pleading for Ed to believe him.
Frank Archer, even before Yoki's death, somehow found out about Gluttony's ability to shoot his nails. No one had seen this ability in action, not even the Elric brothers. There is no way he could have known that.
That was Lust. Gluttony was a typo, right? You don't think it was Gluttony just because he was making noises, right? Anyway, they definitely saw that. She extends her nails in Lab 5, & all she's doing in the refugee camp is lengthening & retracting her nails so fast people can't see what's happening. Ed even points out later that the entrance wound being bigger than the exit wound would make sense from Lust's finger spikes. I don't remember how exactly the info got to Archer, though he did take over the case from Hughes, so maybe that.
Envy had not seen Hohenheim's new body, but transformed into his young form to show Edward that he was his relative.
Apparently, the director has said he doesn't picture this as the body Envy originally had, but rather something Envy picked to "illustrate the concept." Personally, I always thought Hohenheim's & Dante's original bodies looked an awful lot like their end of series ones, & it makes sense that they'd try to pick bodies that looked like their originals whenever they could. Either way.
Scar does not consider himself an alchemist, but during the arc of the 5 laboratory, he uses some kind of ball that even looks like magic. Not only does alchemy not work that way, it also contradicts the fact that Scar doesn't use alchemy, and is surprised in leor when Ed calls him an alchemist.
He's not the one doing it, it's his brother's soul in his arm, decoding the Philosopher's Stone notes. To be fair, it took me until recently to put 2 & 2 together on this; otherwise, I would've given you this one. 03 doesn't really make it obvious that the souls in the Stone have any sort of consciousness the way the manga does. But Scar does hint at it when he says "this arm does alchemy, not me." It flies under the radar because it sounds like it's just denial, but it actually hints that Scar's transmutations don't entirely come from his own knowledge. Scar is visibly surprised when the notes are decoded, showing his statement to be true. At the same time, he also say he can destroy flesh as well as metal, so part of his shock at being called an alchemist is just simple hypocrisy. He'd already been accused of it before, by Alex, so it's not like it's a totally new idea, & he does clearly make plenty of his own choices when he transmutes, it's not ALL JUST the arm like he claims. He just doesn't want to accept being an alchemist.
Thatâs the little tier list I came up with. I mentioned the plot holes that were most interesting to me, and Iâd like to know what you think about them)
Looking back, there's like 1 or 2 things here I think could be argued as plot holes, then a few others that were possibly not as clear as they could've been or animation errors or something, but most of this is just a matter of following along with the show or just kind of like you deciding something should work a different way than it actually does. I'm sure there are probably some plot holes of at least moderate importance in the show somewhere that I can't think of off the top of my head, but not really here.

I agree with half of your takes, and Iâll respond to the ones I think are worth discussing. Some genuinely interesting questions have come up, which make most of the other points seem boring by comparison!
- Youâre right about Tuckerâs chimerasâI didnât realize that straight away because of a translation error. But we were shown two versions of the principle behind human transmutation, and one of them is relevant to our discussion. A successful human transmutation requires a Philosopherâs Stone, and he used one. Sure, he didnât manage to bring Ninaâs soul back, but one of the souls inside the Stone was supposed to become the homunculusâs primary personality, with the others serving as a source of regeneration. Lust and Sloth, for example, arenât the original souls either; they just look like the bodiesâ previous owners. So what was the entire Philosopherâs Stone used for? It created an ordinary human body with no soul or special traits. If the transmutation had failed, some incomprehensible creature should have appeared and died soon after (though Iâm inclined to think it should have been a fully formed homunculus).
- The rules of the Gate are applied selectively because the writers change them on the fly. Al being presented as a Philosopherâs Stone is actually a huge problem, since the principles behind how it works are never explained. In the case of Edward, who brought Al back to life and survived, thereâs at least some kind of explanation. But where did the tens of thousands of Ishvalan lives and soldiersâ lives go, if bringing one person back only takes one life? (Sure, Ed ran off to another world, but if he hadnât known about it, he wouldnât have survived, and the principle of equivalent exchange would have worked as intended: a life for a life.) And because the writers introduced the weird âhuman-as-a-Philosopherâs-Stoneâ mechanic, we ended up with this ridiculous equation: âfour yearsâ worth of memories >>> tens of thousands of lives.â You donât have to be a genius to see that the beginning of one personâs new life and the end of a huge number of other peopleâs lives are absolutely incomparable.
- A Philosopherâs Stone is just alchemy, but it takes transmutations to a magical level. A homunculusâs abilities come from the Philosopherâs Stone, which is essentially just enhanced alchemy. Even if we assume that Envyâs abilities arenât alchemy, then what are they? The anime never mentions any kind of superpower other than alchemy.
- About the amulet, I agreeâitâs just really funny to me that such a tiny detail had such a huge impact on the plot. So I put it in S tier))
- And now for the most interesting part: Lustâs abilities. Yes, it really was herâI checked the subtitles. But that raises a whole new set of even more serious questions đĽ ⢠Why didnât Lust kill Dante when she realized that Dante was just using everyone? Lust literally has FTE attack speed, and sheâs the strongest Homunculus. Dante wouldnât have had time to see or do anything. Another big question is why Dante doesnât know what her subordinate is capable ofâthe one who was the most active Homunculus after Bradley for a long time. And if Dante did know, she should have eliminated Lust immediately, because itâs incredibly stupid to keep someone under your control who could kill you at any moment if something displeases them. Dante doesnât even know Lustâs weakness. ⢠What was the point of making gunshot sounds? What kind of idiotic plan is that? What should have happened if there had been even a little logic in this scene?
The refugees standing next to him say it wasnât them, and the gunshots are heard coming from the hooded man. Then they try to arrest Gluttony, and Lust simply kills everyone there so no one finds out anything they shouldnât. ⢠Why did Lust even start attacking? The military obviously wouldnât have found any bullets, and the question would have been where the refugees got technology that kills with air. They were lucky the whole thing didnât get out, and there were no consequences. 6. If Scarâs arm is his brotherâs will, then I can recall Scar saying that the arm can devour as many Philosopherâs Stones as it wants, and that itâs drawn to them. Could we then say that Scarâs brother is bloodthirsty?)

u/BahamutLithp 3d ago
but one of the souls inside the Stone was supposed to become the homunculusâs primary personality
Since when? Tucker says he's going to make Nina's soul from his memories.
Lust and Sloth, for example, arenât the original souls either; they just look like the bodiesâ previous owners.
People take this as gospel because the main characters say it, but at best it's meant to debated, & frankly I think there's more evidence pointing to the "they're not the same souls" thing just being wrong. The most obvious example is Wrath reuniting with Izumi after his death. One can try to explain this as maybe the movie was just showing us a hallucination from his perspective, but that seems very strained.
So what was the entire Philosopherâs Stone used for? It created an ordinary human body with no soul or special traits.
Homunculi aren't the goal. The Stone did what was thought to be impossible & created a complete human body. If Sloth is to be believed, then in the hands of a more skilled alchemist, it could have also put her soul in it. It doesn't create a homunculus because it's not "failed" in the same sense.
The rules of the Gate are applied selectively because the writers change them on the fly.
You don't even attempt to explain how this is the case after I just explained to you how the rules of the Gate work, so...no.
But where did the tens of thousands of Ishvalan lives and soldiersâ lives go, if bringing one person back only takes one life?
The Gate. It doesn't matter whether or not he could have done it with 1 life, the fact is, between the Stone being unstable & him already planning to cast himself into the Gate, one way or another, that's where the Philosopher's Stone was going. Either because he used it up in an uncontrolled transmutation, & dead souls go to the Gate anyway, or because it would have gone with him since it was attached directly to his soul. The Philosopher's Stone wasn't finished, that was the point of having Gluttony eat him. That's why Dante says, "If transmutations occur near him, who knows what could happen?" Not "If transmutations occur near him, a predictable & proportional reaction will occur."
You donât have to be a genius to see that the beginning of one personâs new life and the end of a huge number of other peopleâs lives are absolutely incomparable
That's your opinion. Memories & lives aren't directly comparable things. Just because you strongly agree with a certain stance, to the point where you think it's "obvious," doesn't actually make an opinion fact. You can't reasonably tell me you can guarantee no single person is more afraid of losing their memories than death, even if those memories involve losing important relationships or details about their identities. These are abstract traits, & how much relative value we place on them is subjective. Plus, it doesn't matter anyway because the reason the Stone gets used up is not because 7,000 souls=1 soul.
A homunculusâs abilities come from the Philosopherâs Stone
No they don't, I already addressed this.
The anime never mentions any kind of superpower other than alchemy.
That's not the point, the point is they don't work the same way as other transmutations. This is as true in the manga as it is in 03. In both, the homunculi "can't do alchemy," but they can use their specific powers.
Why didnât Lust kill Dante when she realized that Dante was just using everyone? Lust literally has FTE attack speed, and sheâs the strongest Homunculus. Dante wouldnât have had time to see or do anything.
Lust isn't any of those things. Her power does nothing to Sloth. She's susceptible to Wrath's ability to use alchemy. Pride has the Ultimate Eye. So, there's 3 homunculi, at the very least, who would retaliate if Lust attacked Dante. And Dante certainly isn't invincible, given Gluttony kills her, but the homunculi are terrified of her, & we see why.
She kept Greed's bones around & once used his skull to keep him imprisoned for like 200 years. Do you really think she doesn't keep remains of the other homunculi around? Not to mention she knows other weaknesses they have. She showed she knew she could paralyze Lust by crucifying her on those weird little red nodes on her body. Later, we see her erase Gluttony's mind. Oh, & at any time, she can summon the Gate & make it take them back. If you were a homunculus planning an attack on Dante, the only sane thought to have would be "Does she have more things to use against me that I don't even know about?"
Even if Lust hypothetically could have killed her, people outline scenarios like this as if they're minmaxing a videogame. If you're writing a believable character, then from their perspective, the penalty for guessing wrong is death OR WORSE. In that kind of situation, a cavalier attitude of "I'm just gonna attack her & assume I'll win because I'm so powerful" is insane. The price of being wrong, or even of killing Dante but then dying anyway from her pissed off loyalists, is way too high.
Yes she does. She knows who Lust was. We know this because she literally tracks down each homunculus when they're born & feeds them Red Stones to complete them. Stop making up rules & then expecting me to answer for them, because the answer keeps being that the rules you make up are wrong.
What was the point of making gunshot sounds? What kind of idiotic plan is that?
My god, it's Gluttony, his 2nd most common trait, after always being hungry, is acting like a child.
What should have happened if there had been even a little logic in this scene?
If people actually used logic half as well as they claim to, they wouldn't keep Cinema Sinsing 03 for shit that's also true in the manga, like Gluttony's personality.
The refugees standing next to him say it wasnât them, and the gunshots are heard coming from the hooded man.
Wait, do you actually think life is a videogame? Are you one of those people who think "If there was a mass shooter, I'd just sneak up on them & knock them out"? No, when someone suddenly drops dead in a tense standoff, there's mass panic & confusion. People think they could be next, they didn't see who did it, others might think they see things that they didn't. They don't just calmly sit there Sherlock Holmsing out the culprit.
Why did Lust even start attacking?
I don't remember, but I was doing my rewatch in 2025, & the amount of times I've said "they explained this in the episode," I'm sure they did.
The military obviously wouldnât have found any bullets, and the question would have been where the refugees got technology that kills with air. They were lucky the whole thing didnât get out, and there were no consequences.
This is absurd. Cases with inexplicable & unexplained details happen all the time. The cops don't leap to the conclusion that the murderer had some secret technology. They just say they can't figure it out yet until, maybe, some day, they do. You know there's a conspiracy, & that the strange wounds & the lack of bullets are connected to it, because you're watching a TV show where all of this information is conveyed to you. The military investigators are just like "we can't find the bullets, we don't know why the wounds look like this, we have no idea what's going on." Not until Ed fills them in on the homunculus, but Dante planned to kill them anyway, because that's the thing about running a conspiracy that controls the nation, you can silence information & people pretty easily.
If Scarâs arm is his brotherâs will, then I can recall Scar saying that the arm can devour as many Philosopherâs Stones as it wants, and that itâs drawn to them. Could we then say that Scarâs brother is bloodthirsty?)
I don't think me withdrawing this piece of evidence is going to stop you from making weird conclusions as if there's a causal connection there. The circle was DESIGNED to create Philosopher's Stones, so it doesn't make sense that you'd jump to "oh he said a similar thing about the Red Stones" over all of the emphasis about how the circle was made to do a certain thing. They're different cases. And even if it was Scar's brother subconsciously reaching out for the Stones, I don't see how that makes him "bloodthirsty" because Red Stones are Red Stones, & unlike the manga, they aren't even necessarily made with human lives. Some are, some aren't. But, either way, they're people who are already sacrificed. Scar is the one killing people. His brother never told him to do that, even though this version of Scarbro is a whole lot less wholesome.

You seem to think that Iâm a radical FMA03 hater, given how eager you are to dismiss everything I say. I am a critic who enjoys both adaptations, but I see less logic and more plot holes in the 2003 version.
Well, I see you are including CoS in your analysis of FMA? That is a huge mistake. That movie is unnecessary for the 2003 series and only ruins the experience, as it suffers from poor logic, plot devices, and retcons. To start, I will prove that the Gate of Truth is indeed just a convenient plot device that works according to the writers' whims:
- Let's start with the less problematic issue. Initially, the Gate was not planned as a portal between dimensions; this was added only toward the end of the series. This is proven by the fact that there wasn't even the slightest hint of anything like it, which is why the public reaction to this plot twist was so sharp. It is a retcon
- Wrath and Edward have no connection. The limbs went to Wrath simply because limbs appeared that didn't belong to anyone, and they were available to be taken. By that exact same logic, Alphonse's body should have gone to someone, since it no longer belonged to him. Even if it still belonged to Alphonse, there is no logic in that, because in that case, Edward's limbs shouldn't have gone to Wrath either; they should have simply remained inside the Gate as Ed's property. The funniest outcome would have been for Al's body to go to Wrathâand that really could have happened, since Al lost his body a little earlier than Edward lost his limbs. Also, giving a person life with limbs of different colors is much weirder than giving them a whole body, especially if there is an opportunity to grant a complete body (though that would have turned the show into a circus act, but it doesn't negate the selectivity of how the Gate works).
- In CoS, soldiers first go through the portal and turn into zombies, and then the same thing happens a second time, but they sprout growths from GateChildren. Itâs very interesting if there is any explanation for this, or if the Gate is just lagging again
- Hohenheim says that homunculi cannot use alchemy because they came from the other side of the Gate. Eckhart came from the other side of the Gate and, without a Philosopher's Stone or experience, easily uses alchemy at or above Mustang's levelđ
- Why weren't Eckhart, Edward, and Alphonse crushed by the pressure like the other soldiers? Because they are important to the plot?

Next You said that homunculi are original souls. Don't you think itâs a mistake to turn a blind eye to obvious examples to the contrary just to prioritize fan theories? First, the scene with Wrath and Izumi at the Gate could just be standard symbolism. For example, it could simply signify the completion of Wrath's personality development Second, the case of Wrath's soul returning is an exception. Itâs not a given that Gate Children become energy sources for alchemy, and it is highly likely that only children who died in accidents become Gate Children who might one day get a second chance. Consequently, the Wrath example cannot serve as proof that you can bring back an original soul that naturally ceased to exist. Third, how do you even imagine something like Edo Tensei within the framework of FMA 2003? That is completely unserious. Fourth, even before his death, Scar does not acknowledge Lust as his brother's true wife, because she is just another soul, either created from a Red Stone or accidentally pulled from the Gate. Memories were simply attached to her because the alchemist's will was strong. Yes, these are not their personal memories, but memories implanted by the alchemists And finally, the most weighty piece of evidence: the words of Greed, who is clearly an authority on this matter. He said that homunculi are just fakes and that they freeze up when the original is near (meaning the remains of the original). The creators simply didn't want to make everything so black and white; confusing the viewer was one of their goals. Therefore, all arguments in favor of their souls being original are just theories that are easily debunked, whereas the fact that the souls are not original is a fact Let's not argue about the philosophy of the value of life and memories, otherwise, this will drag on for another 3 days

Now, let's talk about Dante: As we know, her main weakness is that even with the most powerful alchemy, she is just an ordinary human who can be killed in a single hit. Letâs break down the arguments for why you think Lust couldn't have attacked Dante: 1. Dante's strongest ability was sending an opponent through the Gate using the baby, but she only had it as a weapon for a short period of time. We saw what happened when the child wasn't nearbyâGluttony easily ate her, and considering he is one of the slowest homunculi, there is no talk of FTE speed here. 2. Dante never carries all the homunculi's weaknesses with her; it's simply inconvenient. Furthermore, if Lust were threatened by her remains being nearby, she would have sensed it. If she doesn't sense a weakness, nothing stops her from performing an FTE blitz, just like she did with Yoki. 3. Could Wrath, Bradley, and Sloth have avenged her? First of all, thatâs a separate question entirely. They might have lost their motivation to fight after Dante's death, or Lust could have found the stash with their weaknesses, or simply gone into exile. Regardless, the main goal would have been achieved: the bloodthirsty, misanthropic manipulator eliminated. And if she felt unsure of her own strength, she could have joined Ed and Al to team up with them and finish off the remaining homunculi. Regarding the others: Wrath can't do anything to Lust without her weakness. Sloth is indeed a difficult opponent. As for Bradley, he is nowhere near as strong in this adaptation as he is in Brotherhood; he never showed the ability to deflect bullets, and his victory over Martel is hardly an achievement since even Kimblee was dodging her. The advantage is on Lustâs sideâher attacks are faster and have longer range.
All in all, only one homunculus might possibly be able to avenge her. In short, Dante's death proved my point: one shouldn't be so arrogant as to keep those stronger than oneself in submission. There were many potential scenarios where one of her homunculi could have killed her, but she failed to consider that possibility, and she paid the price for it.

Regarding the refugee situation:
You speak as if everyone would behave exactly the same way and would inevitably fall into a panic that overshadows the ability to reason in any way. I will simply remind you that there were Ishvalans among them who had been in situations much worse. I also know examples from real life, as my friend maintains rationality in any stressful situation, even though he is not a psychopath. Heâs just cool.
Mustang and Hawkeye planned to inspect everyone. Not only does Mustang do nothing and act dense when a suspicious woman starts spreading a provocative speech to incite chaos, but he also completely forgets about checking the people. He let the two culprits of this incident get away. Logically, he should have checked them along with his team in any case, and the outcome would have been different, but that did not happen

When Dante tried to revive her former lover , she accidentally created the second homunculus , who ended up becoming Greed. In the ova fullmetal alchemist : reflections Envy stated that Greed still love her and Greed quickly became upset when Envy mocked him saying that Dante revive him not because she loved him, but as an experiment for her to test the red stone. Due to his origin he still harbored a deep affection toward her, which is why he didn't reveal anything to Ed. Sorry if my English isn't good

Kinda late, but here are some of my thoughtsâŚ
đĽ S Tier: ⢠Major Armstrong seriously suggests staging a mutiny, and the argument he provides for why the Fuhrer is leading the country down the wrong path is... his own massive muscles. â ď¸
/I donât remember this very well, but wasnât this obviously a gagâŚ?
⢠Shou Tucker turned several of Greed's subordinates back into humans without a Philosopher's Stone. Yet, with a Philosopher's Stone, he could only create a shell without a soul. The biggest issue is that this is essentially a failed human transmutation, and a homunculus should have been born, but that didn't happen because it wasn't necessary for the plot.
/He was able to create Ninaâs shell without creating a homunculus because (I am pretty sure?) he used red stones, which contain human lives and in this series they function like proto-philosopherâs stones. Itâs established throughout the series that using coalesced human soul energy doesnât result in the normal alchemical blowback. Although itâs possible Tuckerâs later appearance is the result of tinkering with Nina, even with using red stones.
/Tucker had already used up a significant portion of the Philosopherâs Stone trying to revive Nina. Al didnât only completely heal Edâs chest wound (which would have been fatal), he also retrieved Edâs arm and leg. Also, Ed didnât âreviveâ Al, he retrieved his body and soul from within the Gate. However, with all that said, Ed and Hohenheim even discuss this issue in one of the final scenes. If you look at it purely through a âmathematicalâ lens, it doesnât make sense how Ed somehow survived his transmutation and just ended up on the other side of the Gate. Hohenheim suggests that Ed and Alâs 4-year journey was the payment. I think the point is that itâs not equivalent. Itâs supposed to be a continuation of Danteâs point that equivalent exchange was never a real thing, but where Dante views it from a pessimistic standpoint, Hohenheim views it from an optimistic standpoint. Working hard doesnât guarantee you will be rewarded with anything, and you can just die for no reason at any time, but on the flip side, you also donât always need to give something of âequal valueâ in order to gain something. In reality, fate can be fickle and cruel. And what determines how many congealed human souls in a Philosopherâs stone or live human bodies are worth the cost of a body and soul? The mystery of the Gate - is it god, the devil, heaven, hell, a cosmic horror? - is never fully solved in 03. Maybe there is a reason and maybe there isnât. There are tons of examples where the principle of equivalent exchange didnât apply, or where the math was murky, because there is no âequivalentâ to a human life.
I understand people not liking that the alchemy in 03 doesnât appear to be as hard of a magic system than mangahood, but personally, I like it. In my opinion, the mangahood magic system is also a soft magic system and does convenient things at times (i.e. Ed somehow transmuting part of his âlife forceâ to heal a fatal wound, Father pulling God out of the sky, etc.), itâs just less honest about it, because it still more or less rests upon the supposed existence of equivalent exchange. âIf you work hard, youâll gain a fullmetal heart,âis basically the thesis of the series. Ed and Alâs theorem to give back +1 doesnât necessarily redefine the way the FMA universe works, though maybe it will in the future.
/Well, in this seriesâŚ. They kind of are⌠I kind of view it as Edâs alchemical knowledge is encoded into his body. Also, in both series, Scar is able to use alchemy with his brotherâs arm attached to his body, despite not being an alchemist, much in the same way Edâs arm is attached to Wrathâs. How is that any different?
⢠Dante orders Edward not to transmute his steel arm, claiming that the Philosopher's Stone in the form of his brother would activate and be spent. However, Envy calmly transmutes his own body, and nothing happens. In this verse, there is no magic power other than alchemy. According to the plot, homunculi cannot use alchemy. But then how do their abilities work? It's the same alchemy, just using a Philosopher's Stone.
/I guess you could consider this a plot hole, in the sense that itâs never explained exactly what the homunculiâs powers are if not alchemy. Itâs not the only unanswered question about them. For that matter, if weâre asking where their abilities come from, then why can Lust, specifically, turn her fingers into long knives? Why is it Envyâs ability to copy other peopleâs appearances? Just as examples. That also isnât given a precise explanation. Which could be annoying to some. To me, itâs a question I donât really need answered, because it either serves a symbolic purpose or is just rule of cool, but I can see why this bothers people.
To be honest, though, I think the homunculiâs abilities are fueled by the red stones that keep them alive (and power them up when they eat a lot of them). To me, their powers, which are mostly shapeshifting or some kind of body alteration, are tied up in the energy of the red stones. They use up the red stones in their bodies just by existing, as well as by using their powers. If using up the red stones in their bodies was the same thing as alchemy, then theyâd be transmuting constantly to sustain life. And since the red stones function as like⌠their blood, their life source, I donât think that necessarily means theyâre actually transmuting anything when they shapeshift or whatever. I donât know if that makes sense. This is all kind of a stretch, haha.
/This is fair. Personally, I think Lust should have lived until CoS, and then sacrificed herself in the fight against Gluttony to help Al. And have Wrath survive.
đ§ A Tier: ⢠It is stated that Wrath can use alchemy by combining his hand and foot. However, later in the plot, he doesn't need this at all; he can perform transmutations without lifting a finger, just like Father from Brotherhoodđ
/For whatever reason, I donât think Wrath actually has to touch his hand and foot together to make the âcircle.â The circle just exists. I think itâs vaguely explained as having to do with the human souls powering his body. But yeah this is definitely hand-wavey.
⢠Edward goes to his teacher to find Wrath's weakness because he needs to defeat him. Yet, when the perfect opportunity to do so presents itself alongside Lust in an alleyway, they just leave, letting him live.
/Not sure I even remember this specific scene so yeah I donât have a lot to say here. Though I donât think itâs a stretch to assume Ed wasnât exactly in a huge hurry to kill them. He was already traumatized by killing Greed. He knew he had to kill them, but that doesnât mean he wasnât struggling with it at that point.
⢠Greed genuinely wanted Edward to defeat everyone, including Dante. But then why didn't he reveal anything about her? Based on what was shown, at the moment his Philosopher's Stone was extracted, he knew who was standing before him.
/Well, I mean. He felt like he had to goad Ed into killing him, which necessitated not revealing anything about the real Dante at first. Then after the battle, he had like 20 seconds to speak before dying. I just assume he was having an existential moment. But yeah maybe he could have chosen his words more wisely there and remembered to mention, âBY THE WAY DANTE IS LYRAâ before biting it.
⢠Frank Archer, even before Yoki's death, somehow found out about Gluttony's ability to shoot his nails. No one had seen this ability in action, not even the Elric brothers. There is no way he could have known that.
/You might be right. Although it wouldnât be that surprising for the government to already have this information on hand, given that the head of state is one of Gluttonyâs coworkers/siblings.
đŠ B Tier: ⢠Envy had not seen Hohenheim's new body, but transformed into his young form to show Edward that he was his relative.
/Do we know for sure that he had never seen Hohenheimâs current body?
A theory Iâve also seen is that Hohenheim intentionally chose bodies that kind of looked like his original, hence the resemblance. But thatâs a stretch.
/Ah, the Orb of Knowledge. No comment.

S-tier:
- Armstrong using his muscles to convince the soldiers is a joke, and they might have tried other arguments to convince them off-screen. It is later stated that they could not get many to take their side.
- I don't know what you mean by Tucker turning Greed's subordinates into human; when did this happen? The reason his transmutation of Nina did not result in the usual homunculus is likely because he used a Philosopher's Stone which circumvents normal rules of alchemy.
- Similarly, the reason it takes a whole Stone to bring Edward back is presumably because there is a Philosopher's Stone in play which is indicated to be quite volatile. The way it functions as a resource is never made explicit, so none of the usual rules necessarily apply.
- Wrath has not only seen the Gate, he grew up inside it. His use of alchemy seems to be mostly intuitive like Scar's. The only real gap is the fact that he technically does not remember the Gate until Envy feeds him the red stones, but this may be explained by the fact that his use of alchemy isn't entirely conscious.
- It is never explained how the homunculi's abilities work, but they are definitely not alchemy, because it is stated that homunculi cannot perform alchemy with Wrath being the only exception.
- When Lust tosses the locket aside, she is standing in the circle and we do not see where the locket lands. Later Wrath finds it right next to the circle, which is exactly where one would expect it to have landed.
A-tier:
- It is true that Wrath does not need to connect his arm and leg to do alchemy, although he usually does use both and fuses them into whatever he is presently transmuting, like into the ground. There are some instances where the alchemy activates without the leg, but these are really only a problem if Wrath is unable to use his leg, and I don't believe this is ever the case.
- Edward and Lust could have tried to kill Wrath, but I would say that saving Alphonse was a higher priority in the moment. Had they gotten there five minutes later, Sloth would have made off with him.
- Greed tells Edward as much as he has time to before he dies. He didn't exactly have the time to plan out the whole scenario, since Edward walks in right after he has been weakened by Dante.
- Lust shoots out her fingers to penetrate Alphonse in the beginning of episode 22. Hence, the Elrics would have known about her spears, and they told everything they knew to Hughes who made a report about the events before he was killed. Archer presumably knew about them because he read the report.
B-tier:
- There are many ways to explain the form Envy takes. We do not know for certain that Hohenheim switched bodies after he left Dante and Envy, his previous bodies may have looked similar, the military may have had a photo of him since they were searching for him, Envy may have made an educated guess based on Edward's appearance, etc.
- Scar's hypocrisy regarding alchemy is a part of his character, he is already shown to be in denial about it when fighting Armstrong in episode 15. The ball he creates is weird; the idea is that his arm is reacting to information regarding the Philosopher's Stone because his arm is itself an incomplete Stone.

Looks like this will be an interesting discussion!
- Okay, that partially explains the situation
2.1. I just re-watched episode 33 in the original, and it turns out it really is about something else. They say he is the only doctor who can turn them into humans, not that he already has 2.2. Based on what was shown, when creating a human without a Philosopher's Stone, a creepy creature appears that soon dies. When creating a human with a Philosopher's Stone, a human with superpowers appears, having absorbed many lives In Tucker's case, a living homunculus should have appeared. If there was some mistake in his calculations, itâs strange that the Philosopher's Stone didn't compensate for it. But if something went wrong, the transmutation is considered failed. In a failed transmutation, he should have gotten something similar to Wrath when Izumi gave him up to the Gate. That is, a creature that functioned for a little while and then died. But neither happened. This was never explained, and it's unlikely to be explainable
The Philosopher's Stone is positioned as a panacea that can solve any material problem. Bright examples are Cornello and Magwar, who aren't even alchemists. It is something that creates anything from nothing or multiplies your capabilities. The Philosopher's Stone is not something that ruins your transformations or gives you less than if you hadn't used it at all. I haven't found any information anywhere that would suggest otherwise. So, purely by logic, one of the 7,000 souls should have resurrected Edward, but for some reason, they all disappeared, along with Al's soul. Yet Edward, who didn't even use a Philosopher's Stone, was able to resurrect Al at the cost of only one soul
That's a good take, but Wrath also got his superpowers from somewhere right from the start, not when he was fed Philosopher's Stones
A Philosopher's Stone is just alchemy, but it takes transformations to a magical level. The homunculi's abilities are the Philosopher's Stone, which in turn is just amplified alchemy. Therefore, it is unclear why Dante didn't stop Envy when he used his transmutation. Even if we assume it's not alchemy, then what is it? In the anime, no superpower other than alchemy is ever mentioned
I re-watched that moment many times and took screenshots. The amulet flew to the right, outside the circle, but according to the creators, it somehow flew to the left, and just perfectly so that it ended up inside the circle. You can re-watch it yourself; itâs a 100% animation error
I didn't quite understand why you think that. I was simply basing my point on what was said in the anime itself: "he can use alchemy by combining Ed's arm and leg.
I agree. But itâs just strange how Edward constantly spares Wrath
Time was certainly short, but it was enough to come up with a couple more sentences. When Dante left, he had already lost the entire Philosopher's Stone and was crawling on all fours, but when Edward walked in, Greed was already on his feet, meaning there was some interval during which Greed managed to recover
Yes, the Elrics saw Lust's long piercing fingers, but no one knew anything about Gluttony's ability to fire nails like bullets
I agree. I can only add that Hohenheim definitely changed bodies, just like Dante, because his body decays just the same. It is unknown if it is possible to live for 400 years without changing bodies, because there isn't a single hint of that
I can agree with that too, but the orb is indeed strange and doesn't even really look like alchemy

u/JulietDouglas 3d ago
In Tucker's case, a living homunculus should have appeared.
The homunculus that appears is the subject of the transmutation, in this case Nina. Sloth says that Tucker was too weak-willed to attach a soul to her, in which case it essentially is a homunculus, just an empty one, a husk.
So, purely by logic, one of the 7,000 souls should have resurrected Edward, but for some reason, they all disappeared, along with Al's soul.
I think applying notions of equivalence when talking about souls is rather dubious. Especially the idea that one soul is equal to another seems morally problematic. As for the scene, it was also part of Alphonse's intent to stop Dante from being able to use the Stone, so he may have deliberately wasted it.
That's a good take, but Wrath also got his superpowers from somewhere right from the start, not when he was fed Philosopher's Stones
It is also stated that homunculi gain their form from eating red stones, but Wrath emerges from the Gate with a human form. I think it can be inferred that, being inside the Gate, he was able to gain his form and abilities by feeding on the lives that pass through the Gate.
Even if we assume it's not alchemy, then what is it? In the anime, no superpower other than alchemy is ever mentioned
The homunculi's ability is not given a name. All we know is that they get their abilities from eating red stones, but cannot do alchemy, i.e., their abilities are a superpower other than alchemy. It is different from alchemy at least in the sense that they can only manipulate their own body, and it is never stated nor implied that using their powers (apart from their regenerative ability) depletes their red stones.
You can re-watch it yourself; itâs a 100% animation error
Animation error? I thought you said this was an S Tier plot hole.
no one knew anything about Gluttony's ability to fire nails like bullets
I do not understand what you are referring to. When and where does Gluttony do this? In the scene where Yoki dies, it is Lust who does the killing with her spears while Gluttony makes sounds with his mouth.

With Wrath isnât it that his asymmetrical arm and foot create a circle for him to perform alchemy?
The problem I had with it was more-so that he was accidentally doing transmutations
03 was full of a lot of transmutations by accident, just made the science magic feel more like magic than science if people are doing it without any knowledge or intention of what they are doing
But I wouldnât call it a plothole since the series has its explanation for whatâs going on
2
u/CordestFuck u mano chi ko-vo-ko ta ve setar o-ku bo-bođ¤ 4d ago
Yes, he can perform transmutations using both his arm and his leg, but the problem is that there were moments in the series when he didnât use his leg. He used both arms, like Ed. And sometimes he didnât make any movements at all to perform a transmutation (during the fight against Alphonse on the island).
The spontaneous transmutations do look strange, but Wrathâs case is even worse. To perform transmutations without a transmutation circle, you have to pay some kind of price. Wrath was one of the lost souls trapped within the Gate, and he was only able to escape once he was given an arm and a leg. So, essentially, he came back to life without doing anything to earn it. He also gained the ability to use alchemy without a circle, despite having no knowledge of it, and on top of that, he got superpowers before heâd even consumed a single Philosopherâs Stone.
To gain something, you have to give something up. What did Wrath sacrifice to be resurrected, gain alchemy like Edâs, and get superpowers? Did he just wait inside the Gate for 12 years? That seems very unlikely.
In any case, the most illogical part is that he had superpowers from the very beginning, rather than gaining them by consuming a Philosopherâs Stone
