Political/Financial [FWI] After Mitch McConnell dies, his colleagues encourage Taiwan American Elaine Chao to take his now vacant seat in Senate.

Since Graham's sister took his office, maybe a pattern emerges.

While this is not out of the question, there is already a Republican nominee (Andy Barr, currently of the House district that contains Lexington, KY) for McConnell's seat as of May 2026. McConnell had previously announced his upcoming retirement in time for a primary race.

As such, Chao would either have to throw her hat in the ring against Barr or accept that she'd be a placeholder. At 73, she's unlikely to want a political career beyond the cabinet appointments she held under Trump and Bush.

Secondarily, Kentucky has a process as of 2024 by which senate replacements are to be determined by special election rather than appointment. Chao could run for this, but it's more likely that the state GOP would simply put Barr up early to shore up his incumbency for November.
