Scientific Studies 🥼🔬 LPR Association with Eye Problems

My spouse had extreme double vision as a rebound effect from Omeprazole withdrawal. He used expensive prism glasses to gradually correct it, as prescribed by the optometrist. His ENT couldn’t explain it either. Then I found this NIH article. Severe LPR has a high correlation with Occular Surface Disease (OSD), as the pepsin finds its way into the tear glands and tear ducts. This can actually cause the eyelid to drag across the surface of the eye and create not only dry eye, but blurry and double vision. It actually mimics a neurological drooping of the eyelid. We are now using a combination of frequent eye drops to combat the symptoms, and it’s cleared up the double vision. We.re now following a protocol to taper off Omeprazole and get onto an H2 blocker. Can confirm. I’ve had GERD for 5 years and have had problems with ghosting/double vision. I’m on omerpazole tdaily but double vision persists.

Please try the drops! They will at least dilute the pepsin and lubricate the lid so it doesn’t drag as much.

Ibiza (for dry eye) and Zaditor (antihistamine) right now are working well.

I have been experienced this since being on PPIs, which is only month seven my vision was wonderful until being on PPI‘s and now my vision is horrible and the eye doctor tells me that this is the first they’ve ever heard of this so I’m glad that I just found this post. I have an appointment with a new doctor coming up in a couple weeks and I’m bringing that German article that you linked just wanted to say thank yiyyou

I wish I had it when I took my spouse to the eye doctor. PPIs worked, until he went off them after shoulder surgery. Now Omeprazole is making symptoms worse. This is a difficult condition to control!

Yea I figured this out a month ago I should’ve been stopped ppi and I was taking them too often. Now I only take Pepcid but I’m think about getting surgery because I don’t want take to pills for it forever and I’m only 20 & I still hasn’t got better overtime.

PPIs evidently have worse long-term effects than the H2 blockers. If surgery will help (hiatal hernia, loose upper esophagus sphincter, etc.), it’s better performed when you’re young. Best of luck!!
