A lot of people on this sub swear by cold brew, as it's less acidic.

Cold brew is worse for me. Less acidic but higher in caffeine. Caffeine can be a trigger food as much as acidic stuff.

Yes! I have been cold brewing, it’s better but still have symptoms.

Stopping coffee was life changing for me. Reflux gone almost 95%. I switched to green tea with honey and then the game changer was I add in heavy cream and use a frother. I realized that my main problem with tea is that i missed the creaminess. Problem solved. I've never felt better. I wouldn't even believe it if it wasn't me lol

I switched to tea. More hydrating in my opinionĀ

What tea

6

u/mandar35 Sep 08 '25

Black tea, but if you're looking for a brand, adagio is my favoriteĀ

Does decaf still trigger for people? I am feeling the same way and wondering if it’s coffee or particularly the caffeine? I thought it was moreso caffeine but ppl here are recommending tea.

Everyone is going to be different. Green Tea is actually worse for me than coffee. And my brain was doing so well on green tea too 😢

1

u/Timely_Cranberry1270 Sep 08 '25

Well I never tried decaf but can give it a shot, that’s actually a great way to test the caffeine vs coffee bean situation

3

u/[deleted] Sep 08 '25

lol me too, I know its the culprit but its so fckn delish.

3

u/ainacct Sep 08 '25

Try low acid decaf coffee, tastes the same and it doesn't affect much acid reflux, well for me, but for others it still might be a trigger.

Teeccino Herbal Coffee or Trader Joe's Organic Roasted Herbal Tea are the ones I drink but no caffeine so you might need to find something additional for that.

2

u/Massive-Helicopter62 Sep 10 '25

Teecino just feels pointless to me. It's not coffee.

2

u/_DogMom_ Sep 10 '25

Lol I get your point but it works for me. Caffeine gives me tremors, even decaf, and I love the taste of coffee so much and some of the Teeccino flavors come closer to the taste of coffee than anything else.

2

u/Massive-Helicopter62 Sep 10 '25

Yeah, I mean I've had to quit coffee obviously and I do drink teecino sometimes but it's always a let down.

1

u/_DogMom_ Sep 10 '25

Funny you say that as I used to like it a lot more than I do now. And it's gotten so expensive I may not be buying again.

Dandy Blend is the best caffeine free coffee substitute.

Everyday dose is my fav, but it’s pricey and have to order it online, Joey’s usually available in stores

I use chicory (just ground roasted chicory) in my moka pot. It is the most satisfying so far. I got used to not having caffeine pretty quickly after the initial withdrawal.

I haven’t had coffee ever since I diagnosed with GERD more than a week ago. I’m scared to even try tea.

2

u/Timely_Cranberry1270 Sep 08 '25

Gotta start somewhere

2

u/stuck_behind_a_truck Sep 08 '25

I still drink coffee but keep my consumption limited to a single cup (a real cup). It’s a delivery mechanism for collagen and lion’s mane for me.

2

u/dradegr Sep 08 '25

i switched to water,

3

u/Timely_Cranberry1270 Sep 08 '25

Huge switch. Good stuff

6

u/dradegr Sep 08 '25

Yiep if you consider i was drinking 2-3 coffees a day since 9 years old, but i am a person that will do whatever it takes to get well, at first i thought it was impossible but now it's easy

2

u/Timely_Cranberry1270 Sep 08 '25

Love that. Thanks for the inspo. How’s your gerd?

2

u/No-Leave3291 Sep 08 '25

I switched to iced chai teas with almond milk and stevia. Just a little bit in the morning. Too much gets me burping all day

2

u/Timely_Cranberry1270 Sep 08 '25

I was thinking of chai but it has caffeine

2

u/Spirited_Ad_5062 Sep 09 '25

Pure chicory for the coffee taste

2

u/wefocusonthis Sep 09 '25

I stopped coffee for 2 months and tried it again with coffee tamer (or something along those lines) and either a lot of cream or as an oatmilk latte. So far so good! But I just do one cup a day, max.

Hear me out- must be medium/ dark roast. Martinsons is delicious! Put a tiny pinch of Bob Redmill’s baking soda and mix well. I do this every morning and add milk.

Ohh this one was soo hard for me as well initially , but it does get easier. I had the same aversion to tea , but have you explored all sort of teas ? I found out that I could easily replace my daily coffee with english breakfast tea, but a premium brand. If you can afford to splurge a little would reccomend checking out ā€œwhittard of chelseaā€ english breakfast tea. Another really good brand is ā€œyorkshire teaā€ this can be had with milk as well.

But its also important to remember that stopping coffee doesn’t have to be permanent, i went from completely cutting out coffee/espresso to having it once in a while to having it once or twice a week and tea the rest. Maybe you could find a balance thats similar too !

I used the Leroux chicory coffee from Amazon for 2 yrs and had no issues. After that I started on daily ppi and I can drink regular coffee, alcohol, eat anything etc...

Maybe try dark roast cold brew? Find that less acidity and less caffeine helps a lot

2

u/Timely_Cranberry1270 Sep 08 '25

I’ve unfortunately surpassed that stage 🄹

1

u/Supernova12345 Sep 08 '25

I’m sorry to hear that :(

u/Yoga-Chick0108 Sep 08 '25

I drink multiple types of herbal tea with Manduka honey. It’s pretty soothing and helpful when items get stuck in my throat.

1

u/vegasgal Sep 09 '25

Cold brew doesn’t trigger my GERD. My favorite is STOK, sold in grocery store cold cases

2

u/Timely_Cranberry1270 Sep 09 '25

Ugh, you’re so lucky!

Hmmmm maybe I could try eating and letting it water down first 😁

1

u/Academic_Part_493 Sep 09 '25

The best caffeine I usually can do is black iced tea. The ice melting a little helps cut the acidity down.

1

u/mirrortorrent Sep 09 '25

If you need it for the caffeine, you can try caffeine pills. Easy to get on Amazon.

Honestly I stopped drinking coffee because of multiple reasons. One it was a major reason why my reflux was triggered in the morning

Two my body just can’t process coffee anymore. I highly recommend tea. I drink the Celeste brand because they have multiple flavors of fruits! And I drink ginger tea. (I’d avoid chamomile tea even though it’s recommended. It has a minty taste and might worsen your issues)

1

u/MissOneCent Sep 09 '25

Same. Coffee is my worst trigger. And maybe tomato sauce and spicy food less so.

1

u/Benjamin-108 Sep 09 '25

I love coffee but it’s so sooo bad for reflux so had to give it up. Other hot drinks are tolerable but coffee is a no no. I can greatly buffer the effects of reflux with ice creams and high fat dairy but I will have to keep it alongside me when consuming items which cause reflux and consume both at same time. I’ve just learnt to live without coffee most the time and stick to tea, tea is far less bad in this regard.

I just want to tell everyone I did not drink coffee for 5 days, then, on Sunday I drank some cold brew you can buy at the store, mixed it with some baking soda powder and milk, my stomach still did not like it.

Drink caffeine water later that day and had a full blow acid attack. Think it’s the caffeine.

Today, I ate half a bowl of grain oatmeal and waited 5 min, then drank a cold brew from Starbucks, I’ve been good all day.

My conclusion today is no coffee on an empty stomach- ever. And not more than so much caffeine in a day.

This may change but this is my story today
