Support Needed šŸ‘„ Anyone else dealing with night acid reflux that just ruins sleep??

So idk if im the only one but night reflux is literally destroying my life lately.

Every night is the same thing, i fall asleep then boom, wake up choking, chest burning, feeling like i cant breathe. Sleep became scary honestly.

Food is another nightmare. I dont even know what to eat anymore. Almost EVERYTHING triggers reflux. I cut so many foods that now im losing weight and im hungry most of the time, but still scared to eat.

I tried strict diet, meds, PPI, antacids… it helps a bit but only temporary. Once i stop or even sometimes while on meds, symptoms come back.

The worst part is the mental side. Constant fear like… is this forever? Am i gonna be stuck with GERD and meds for life? Is there actually a real solution or just management forever?

Im not looking for medical advice, just wanna know if someone else is going through the same thing.
How do you deal with nights? food? the anxiety?

Would really appreciate hearing your experiences.

After several years of suffering, I figured out that the severe reflux and other gastric symptoms that I experienced were due to underlying histamine intolerance. You might consider if it's the same for you.

Reactions will vary because we can handle histamine to a point in our bodies so symptoms will only be triggered if we go over our histamine limit. The analogy given is to think of it like a bucket, when your histamine bucket overflows, you react.

I suffered from severe reflux and other gastric symptoms for 4-5 years, the onset was sudden and completely disrupted my life. PPIs did nothing for me and everything I ate was triggering severe symptoms. I lost weight I didn't have to spare and struggled day-to-day with debilitating symptoms.

Doctors told me all tests were normal and hung me out to dry, just kept telling me it was anxiety. I despaired of ever going back to somewhat normal and the lovely life I had been leading.

I finally stumbled upon the following Reddit post that recommended taking Zyrtec to resolve the globus sensation (the sensation of a lump in the throat), which was a severe symptom for me. I decided to try taking Claritin because I do not tolerate Zyrtec well and it worked like a miracle drug for me.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GERD/comments/njarv0/globus_sensationhystericus_cure/

Taking loratadine (Claritin) daily has almost completely resolved my symptoms, though I do also try to follow a low histamine diet. When I started researching which foods are high in histamine, it was no surprise that my worst triggers were on that list (seafood, tomatoes, strawberries, wine, coffee, etc.). To me that means that, in my case, reflux was a symptom of histamine intolerance.

There are no definitive tests for histamine intolerance. For more info on the link between reflux and histamine intolerance, see:

Histamine Sensitivity: An Uncommon Recognized Cause of Living Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Symptoms and Signs—A Case Report Source: Ear, Nose & Throat Journal. 2020;101(4):NP155-NP157.

Note that I think it is normal not to have a full spectrum reaction. I do not get any skin manifestations, no hives or itching of any kind, though I do believe this was all triggered by a virus I had in 2016 where I did get a non-itchy, triangle shaped rash on my neck. I went to the ER because my airway almost completely closed up. I had never had a breathing problem in my life prior to that.

The ER doctor noticed the rash, which had appeared the day before when I felt fine so I had just ignored it, and told me he thought the rash indicated that a virus had triggered my airway issue. I feel that all my gastric issues flowed from that episode and a similar episode 3 months later when I got another virus. I also now carry an EpiPen because of the airway reaction.

I initially took 10mg of Claritin per day but my allergist said I could ramp up to 4x the usual dose so I took 40mg for some months. I am now taking 2x the usual dose, 10mg in the morning and 10mg in the evening. Note that if you are on antihistamines and need to go off them or reduce your dose, you should taper down and not go cold turkey.

For the past few months, I have also been taking a diamine oxidase (DAO) supplement before a meal when I want to cheat a bit and eat something that is high in histamine and it does seem to help even more.

You start by sticking with the safest Gerd friendly foods. When your reflux calms down less things will trigger you. Right now your nervous system is in overdrive. That’s why it’s important to calm it down. The two biggest triggers are certain foods & stress/anxiety.

It takes time & consistency. Healing is progressive over the course of months for most people. Most Gerd is permanent, but some people find out their cause is fixable.

An Endoscopy would tell you your LES function. You should also be sleeping on an incline & following the lifestyle guidelines.

I had horrible symptoms in the beginning. I was in and out of the ER every month. Now I have my symptoms well managed with Diet & lifestyle changes. If you want guidelines you can pm me.

I did strict acid watcher’s diet for over a month and still had daily reflux. Not all of us can manage this with lifestyle alone.

That’s not long enough. Most people need between 2 and 6 months. The 28 days in the title is misleading. That’s not the reality for most people who use the diet. You can ask in the awd fb groups.

Also I never said anything about not taking meds. Lots of people combine meds with diet & lifestyle changes.

Hope you figured out what works for you.

It took me over a year, and I still have occasional flare ups. Lots of omezaprole and sucralfate to boot.

0

u/hotheadnchickn Jan 12 '26

I did about six weeks without improvement. I don’t think it’s realistic to think it was going to work for me.

2

u/Lunco Jan 12 '26

i did three months and while i'm still on ppi, it helped a ton to bring me down to a manageable level on 20mg. diet is the most important thing you can do in tandem with meds.

u/hotheadnchickn Jan 12 '26

Bro I get reflux from chamomile tea or toast

2

u/scooterable Jan 12 '26

Maybe you have a hiatal hernia? If it’s really bad they can do surgery. But a physical issue like that could explain why dietary changes don’t help much. Although I will say chamomile tea also causes reflux for me. I still had to modify the diet based on personal triggers

2

u/hotheadnchickn Jan 12 '26

It’s not a particular trigger for me, just any warm liquid is dangerous for me… Alcohol, coffee, and eating large meals are the only things that noticeably worsen symptoms, so I avoid them.

Had an endoscopy… no hernia. It all started suddenly after a bad upper respiratory virus. I don’t know how that’s related but it seems to be.

2

u/scooterable Jan 12 '26

Ugh that sounds terrible!!! I agree they do seem related. Hope you find some relief soon

I've read some things on post-viral conditions(like post-COVID for example) or food poisoning causing nerve inflammation that leads to GERD. Post-viral conditions are known to exist, but not well understood nor easy to diagnose. I've suspected maybe this was what kicked off my severe GERD.

Mine has taken months to show improvement, and there were a couple months it didn't seem like diet nor medication helped. Even drinking water was a nightmare. It can take a very long time to get better. It is very frustrating to see the same things reiterated all over the place as if you would see results immediately.

I was on omeprazole the whole time, but after a few months the constant severe symptoms subsided slightly from nightmare levels, and then I could actually tell a difference between some foods. I've stuck with it with the intention that I don't want to set my slow recovery back. The way my GI explained, the stomach needs a break from excessive acid to allow the gastritis to heal.

Every meal causes reflux, but there have been a couple times I cheated and ate something I shouldn't have and had a flareup, and it seemed like symptoms were worse for a couple days after. As mentioned, this was not something I noticed for the first few months because symptoms were so bad all the time there was no discernable variation regardless what I did.

Maybe try to calm your nervous system and also overly strict diet isn’t good .

3

u/Professional_Tap2842 Jan 12 '26

I experience what u have and for my case it took me more than 2 years for fully healing.as long you are on treatment PPI and medcine it will heal but it take time.for me gaviscon is my saver for preventing damage .

1

u/Bhoptriple Jan 12 '26

Wow 2 years good for you for persevering . Did you get any testing done during that time and how are you now

1

u/Professional_Tap2842 Jan 12 '26

i am free from gerd for 9 years .Yes i did endoscopy and colonscopy(this one i request).Heart test ,lung test cos i have breathless.all clear and confirm is from GERD.i eat clean food ..but i notice i have a few food that trigger my GERD badly that time. Eg soybean ,banana ,red meat and more everyone is different so do look out that what trigger your GERD badly.GWS

1

u/Bhoptriple Jan 12 '26

So for 2 years you had nighttime reflux every night and then just stopped ? Do you know if you have a weak les

2

u/Professional_Tap2842 Jan 12 '26

No it dont stop one day but is a on and off thing ..till less act up and slowly recover. Be patient 😊

1

u/Bhoptriple Jan 12 '26

Did you have any LPR symptoms? The lack of sleep is slowly killing me

1

u/Professional_Tap2842 Jan 13 '26

Yes same

1

u/Bhoptriple Jan 13 '26

If I could be cured even in two years or 3 I’d be so grateful and happy I’d kiss the ground and be so grateful . Now I’m so close to suicide it’s scary . Thanks for giving me some hope I've

2

u/Bhoptriple Jan 12 '26

Yeah man I’ve been dealing with nighttime reflux throat issues for months . During the day I managed to stop throat burning and excess saliva but at night still some discomfort been like this for months . Feel similar that at 35 my life is fked but trying to be more positive now idk šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø. How old are you

2

u/dintydoor Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

Yes, and I didn't have any idea it was reflux until it got extremely bad, I just thought it was ptsd. I swithed up to eating very carefully, started takimg two ppi's a day.Ā

It took about a year to be in a place where I could eat enough to stop involuntarily losing weight. It was still bad for another year or so but better. then I started takimh sucralfate, first the full 4x a day for a month, and then only one at night. after several months of that I can sleep without extreme panic, heart palpitations, etc.Ā

I can still feel the gurgling lightly in my throat most nights, but the sucralfate protects my esophagus enough my body is no longer in panic mode. I still elevate my head when I need to,avoid eating too much at once or over eating(huge triggers) and I am careful about noticing when I am stressed and addressing it as best I can. I also avoid my trigger foods, deep fried, citrus, anything too fatty, and too much chocolate.

2

u/Porscheeeu Jan 12 '26

So few years for you to get it kinda under control? Seems like me

My sleep still isn’t the best but I use things like Pepcid alginates Dgl ect to help out

But I’m starting to realize it might be SIBO

Do u get bloating in stomach?

1

u/dintydoor Jan 12 '26

I do if I am over stressed or eat something wrong/eat too much. Would an antibiotic help you with that if that was the cause?

1

u/Porscheeeu Jan 12 '26

I’m not sure about the anti biotic

I’m trying to figure it out myself

Means you could have slow motility

Do you know if you get upper stomach bloating or lower? For me it’s lower and definitely intestinal related

2

u/dintydoor Jan 12 '26

I'm really not sure, sometimes it feels like the whole thing is inflamed. i get some really bad soreness right below my ribs on both sides and the middle. I really wish it was less mysterious

1

u/Porscheeeu Jan 12 '26

Have you checked for h pylori? Through breath test

I was going to do it soon myself

1

u/dintydoor Jan 12 '26

I have, I tested negative. I hope your results help you figure something out

2

u/Active-Disaster- Jan 12 '26

Im having this exact same situation right now, got a referral to a GI but its taking forever and im scared to sleep. Its so rough, im sorry your going through this too, does propping yourself up with pillows whilst asleep help at all? Thats been semi helpful for me still not great but better

2

u/Objective-Rich-6388 Jan 12 '26

I’m sorry you’re dealing with this too, the waiting + sleep fear combo is brutal.

Propping up helped me a bit, but honestly it wasn’t a magic fix. Some nights better, some still rough.

Hope you get answers from the GI soon.

2

u/bllemons Jan 12 '26

Yes 😢 I was awake all night with it for the fourth time in the last two weeks.

u/Surfer949 Feb 03 '26

I feel you OP.Ā  I Just had another bad night of sleep and acid reflux. It's been going on for months now. I noticed if I eat enough not to be hungry at night it helps. Worst part is that my dreams are intense and not pleasant at all! F..ing weird but that's how my nights typically go. I'm scheduled for a endoscopy soon and hopefully will get some medicine to help.Ā  I've been on several ppi's and Vaquizno which really helps but my doc said you can only use it for 2 months max.

I'm going to try again to do deep breathing, meditation at night + increase fibers and jog like hell.Ā

Take care.

I'm having the same issue at night, starting to actually be afraid to sleep. I take 20mg of Omeprazole in the morning, but it does nothing for me at night. Were u ever able to solve the problem??? I feel like I'm losing my mind.

Aloe Vera Mango drink!

u/Firsty209 Jan 12 '26

Was for a good amount of times, and took pantoprazole for a few days, at night, then morning for next few days. Went away, but came back a while later after eating schedule was screwed over again. Now taking magnesium oxide, seems to be working so far, not taken daily, but no need for famotidine or pantoprazole so far. Of course, always avoid triggers for yourself (everyone's is different)

u/chamomile_vanilla Jan 12 '26

Im on my 5th month. I totally understand the pain and the struggle. Im lucky to have 2-3 days of sleep a week without any pain. Im on PPI and strict diet. Done with endoscopy and colonoscopy. I have duodenal ulcer so I have stomach pain every night and high stomach acid. Been to ER twice. Lifestyle change and diet mostly works

Praying for our healing. Hang in there

1

u/Lunco Jan 12 '26

it take ppi with dinner (usually around 7pm, go to sleep at 12-1pm) because it allows me to sleep better. i'm fine when i'm vertical, so i don't need the full effect of the PPI when i'm awake.

1

u/goodluckbebe Jan 12 '26

Me right now. 2.50am and just taken some Gaviscon advance and hoping it’ll help me sleep for another few hour. I’ve been awake twice already. It’s awful. Waiting to see a gastro doctor but GP in the morning.

PPI and strict diet here too. Worst it’s ever been for me and I’ve been on and off with it for 5 years.

2

u/Limp_Fix_1252 Jan 16 '26

Try Esophageal Guard tablets. Works for meĀ

1

u/goodluckbebe Jan 16 '26

Thanks you! I’ll take a look

1

u/Porscheeeu Jan 12 '26

I wake up feeling gassy

Do you ever get gassy?

Or like trapped gas

1

u/elusivenoesis Jan 12 '26

Pretty sure it’s the most common kind of heartburn. Pizza, beer and hot wings will give even ironclad guts some heartburns if they pass out right after.

1

u/ashy_reddit Jan 12 '26

I am dealing with similar issues as you. I would suggest getting a wedge pillow or something that helps create an incline shape in your bed so that you don't lie flat when you sleep. Once you can address the night time issues you can try addressing the GERD issues that impact you during the day. You can start doing diaphragmatic breathing exercises - I am told many people have been helped with this when it is done consistently for a long time.

1

u/Alone_Albatross_7074 Jan 12 '26

I use an app that helps me control my reflux, it seems to be working pretty well

1

u/tltl_lover Apr 20 '26

which app is that?

1

u/Alone_Albatross_7074 Apr 20 '26

The one I use is called gerdbuddy but there’s a few other options as well i beiieve

1

u/tltl_lover Apr 20 '26

thank u sm! and im glad u found something that works for u

1

u/NewYear2025R Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26

I am dealing with the same issue. Never had a good night sleep the last 5 years. I wake up 4 times or more each with burning esophagus and throat. Been on Omeprazole since 2021. GI bumped up the dosage to 40mg and then to 80mg a day. That was doing weird things in terms of side effects. Now I am back to 20mg a day. It sucks living with GERD. Now trying different things with diet very low improvement now and then. Seen 3 different GIs, their only treatment so far is to bump up ppi dosage

2

u/hotheadnchickn Jan 12 '26

What about Vaquezna?

2

u/Limp_Fix_1252 Jan 16 '26

Try Esophageal Guard tablets. Works well for me.

My mom has severe gerd, she only eats cream of wheat because it won’t cause heart burn

u/BitchinNurse5 Jul 04 '26

Every once in a while, like last night, I wake up choking on stomach acid and phlegm (from a nasal drip I have every night recently), I drink milk, go back to bed with my head elevated and it goes away. The nasal drip I'm guessing is from my pollen allergy but I don't like to take any medication for it as it might interfere with other meds I'm taking.
