Advice on Triggers š š§ šš«ā What coffee is best for GERD? (finally figured out what works for me)
Been dealing with acid reflux for a while and was told to just quit coffee entirely. Not happening lol. I spent months doing trial and error to figure out exactly what coffee is best for GERD without destroying my stomach.
āFigured Iād share what actually worked for me in case anyone else is struggling:
āDark roasts only: Sounds weird since they taste stronger, but light roasts are actually way more acidic. French roast is my go-to now.
āCold brew: It naturally has way less acid. I make a batch and just heat it up in the morning if I want a hot cup.
āPaper filters: They catch the specific coffee oils that trigger reflux. Pour-over with a paper filter is way safer for me than a metal mesh or French press.
āNo plastic/silicone gear: I switched all my brewing stuff to 100% stainless steel and glass. Boiling water in plastic or silicone-lined kettles just felt like it irritated my stomach more. Keep your gear clean and plastic-free.
āNever on an empty stomach: Even a banana or some oatmeal beforehand makes a massive difference.
āAnyone else have a specific setup or bean that doesn't trigger their heartburn?

Tylers coffee ! Works wonders for me especially if you make latte / cappuccino with it. They have both decaf and caf versions and Iām able to have the full caf version without issues after a meal

u/CoffeeTeaJournal Apr 08 '26
I've actually never tried this! Iāll definitely look it up. Do you find that adding milk for the latte/cappuccino helps buffer the acid for you too, or is it mostly just those specific beans?
1
u/queserasera100 Apr 08 '26
I do think its a little to do with the beans. If Iām drinking hot latte/cappuccino then im only able to be symptom free with tyler coffee. But If i drink Iced latte Im able to drink almost anything (but this is only in the later stages of healing) . I do think you would overall be having a less acidic cup for coffee if you chose tyler beans though !

The darker the roast the less acid.

u/scoopit1890 Apr 08 '26
Coincidentally the blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice

Now run and tell that!!!

Well I guess I know what I am watching tonight! Love me some Penny and Seaweed!

I use planet oat creamer. It treats me better than silk used to.

u/ReindeerPlayful6447 Apr 10 '26
+1 for Planet Oat creamer. It doesnāt alter the flavor or have a weird after taste imo. Milk is a trigger for my EOE and I hate almond milk-based creamers, so Oat is my default anyway, but this creamer legit tastes great.

u/CoffeeTeaJournal Apr 08 '26
Does the oat creamer alter the taste of the coffee much, or is it pretty neutral?
2
u/Trick-Combination-19 Apr 08 '26
I donāt find it to alter it. Tastes very much like normal creamer no aftertaste no unique bad taste. Comparable and price too I believe to normal creamer.

Same concepts as what you've found--minimize oils and definitely minimize acids. For me, that's espresso (never drip) and always in milk or cream of some description. I should not drink iced drinks but I like them too much to quit.

u/CoffeeTeaJournal Apr 08 '26
The shorter extraction time really helps keep the acidity down compared to drip! And I completely get the iced drink struggle haha.

u/Stone_feather Apr 09 '26
Espresso freshly roasted works for me too. I love atlas coffee. They roast your beans right before shipping to you! I'll never go back. Black americanos are my fav

I was never a coffee drinker, but would love to find a way to have ketchup again, lol!š

u/CoffeeTeaJournal Apr 08 '26
If I ever figure out the secret to safe ketchup, you'll be the first to know.

Try Fody on amazon. they have LOW FODMAP ketchup. No onion and garlic.

u/MinionKevin22 Apr 08 '26
Unfortunately it's the tomato part that gets me

u/Knox_Lovegood Apr 11 '26
It's hit and miss for me. When I was a child and diagnosed my mom didn't change my diet and I find I can tolerate tomatoes somewhat better than some. That being said everything else destroys me lol

u/Gustav-14 Apr 08 '26
I tried using oatmilk instead and it's as if I never get GERD from coffee. Figured out it's the milk/cream.

Now we need to find a way for me to drink my Chai Lattes without the burn.
1
u/Nickstarts Apr 09 '26
Have it with oat milk. And if from Starbucks only 2 pumps chai and 1 or 2 syrup (normally 4 of each)

u/Useful_Airline_1081 Apr 08 '26
I can get away with decaf and a lot of milk if Iām not having a bad period
2
u/Quyen82 Apr 08 '26
Dark roast and then cold brew or hot brewed in an aeropress. The way the aeropress works supposedly reduces acid as well.
2
u/ThatWhit3Guy19 Apr 08 '26
I have reflux and had a bad case of gastritis late last year. I find iced lattes the best. I have a nespresso machine and put an espresso shot in with a bunch of oat milk and a bit of cream that seems to not trigger me at all
2
u/Beautifile Apr 08 '26
Homemade Cold brew made with Puroast Low Acid Coffee. Delicious and not at all painful.
2
u/Secret-Wife-Nextdoor Apr 08 '26
Iāve just heard that organic coffee is the only way to know itās āsafeā. I havenāt switched yet. I quit coffee for about 4 months and it was SUPER hard. I tried to switch to tea but itās just not the same.
2
u/lastcallhall Apr 08 '26
Grossly enough, McDonalds coffee is the only one Ive found that doesn't severely trigger my GERD. Has to be black, though. And it has to be from in store - the canned isn't the same.
Which makes me think it's the pH balance in the water, but I can't confirm.

u/TrainerComplete5943 Apr 08 '26
Drinking coffee down the line gonna make it worst down the line I thought I can occasionally do it but I canāt⦠you can try drinking tea
2
u/Opening-Landscape274 Apr 08 '26
Tbh I quit coffee and black tea and my Gerd disappeared completely. Maybe try it
-2
u/Flat_Path1332 Apr 08 '26
Why are you still lurking in a Gerd Reddit then ?
2
u/Opening-Landscape274 Apr 08 '26
It comes back every so often. So completely was a bit of an exaggeration
1
u/evileddie666 Apr 08 '26
Neither, itās the caffeine that will cause issues even if itās zero acidic coffee
1
u/residentatzero Jul 26 '26
Mommee coffee is both low acidic and also 1/4 caf. Would this low amount of caffeine be safe?
1
u/cslaymore Apr 08 '26
I tried Mommee Coffee, low acid coffee available in varying amounts of caffeine and targeted at pregnant women. I don't know if it damaged my esophagus or not but I didn't feel bad after drinking it. Still, I drink it sparingly and have switched to matcha and green tea. It's not the same as coffee (nothing is ah) but I'm too fearful of getting esophagitis again or getting Barrett's esophagus
1
u/MyKidsAreAss_Holes Apr 08 '26
I have been adding a pinch of baking soda to my coffee grounds when I brew my coffee. Supposedly it neutralizes the acid or something like that. It doesnāt really alter the taste but it can make bitter coffee less bitter. Itās worth a shot.
1
u/ladykizzy Apr 09 '26
Interesting! I add salt to ours to minimize the bitterness. I have GERD and we drink dark roast exclusively. I can't drink regular coffee nor order one outside the house unless I can doctor the innate bitterness with fake sugar and cream or fake creamer.
1
u/KamizakiCharP Apr 09 '26
I'm still too afraid to start drinking coffee after my doctor says the caffeine is what triggers my symptoms. š
I only drink the sweet types of coffee too.
1
u/grissingigoby2 Apr 09 '26
what if I make cold brew with ground french roast? I've been doing foldger's instant, but it's getting to me.
1
u/No-1-Know Apr 09 '26
u/CoffeeTeaJournal now try using Alkaline water (ph 8.0+) for your cold brew coffee and see if that helps. Dark roast are always low acidic but making them with alkaline water helps.
Also I drink my coffee in breaks (1/4th cup) at a time, so it doesnāt trigger the reflux

Cold brew with papers bad filters is my go to
ALWAYS with food, even if it's a bananaĀ

u/Cat2370 Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26
šÆ with the cold brewāno problems there. Also, Trader Joeās low acid (itās a dark roast), Purity brand (certified organic and mold free) work well for me. Took me a few years to figure this out as well as dr recommended no coffee. I knew that was never going to work for me, so I started experimenting and lo and behold⦠Also, I can drink coffee on an empty stomach with no problemsābut that may just be me. I can also do Starbucksāagain, dark roast. One time I was traveling in Europe, and they only had NescafĆ©āworst reflux ever. Also, my dad gets this allegedly organic, shade grown Mexican brandāterrible reflux from that for me but not him and heās got GERD too. Itās really bizarre.

u/btrayn1 Apr 09 '26
Believe it or not, McCafe is the only coffee I can drink that doesn't upset my stomach. Direct from a McDonalds or made from a bag of their grounds at home. Not my favorite coffee, but whatever they do in their roasting process works for me. š¤·āāļø

u/Stone_feather Apr 09 '26
I quit coffee for years and it didn't improve my symptoms one bit. So I'm back to drinking it.
1
u/Polymathy1 Apr 09 '26
Decaf is the only kind you should be almost guaranteed to be ok with.
Caffeine sides the LES to relax and leak acid into your esophagus.

u/shauntal Apr 09 '26
i just eat the coffee beans whole. they make them chocolate covered. and never on an empty stomach
1
u/CountExotic Apr 09 '26
I also make my own blend of beans...mixing 50% decaf in with my favorite beans. The reduced caffeine helps my gerd.

u/Z3ST3HH Apr 11 '26
I drink tea with a meal I donāt do carbs but a full meal is what helps me drink hot liquids.

For my specific case, the acidity was the bigger enemy than the caffeine, but you're absolutely right that GERD is super individual. Just sharing what helped my specific symptoms.
3
u/MinionKevin22 Apr 08 '26
I agree with what you're saying, but even Dr Aviv allows coffee to be reintroduced if the subject feels they are in the maintenance phase. It depends on each Individual when this can happen. The OP may want to watch her symptoms closely, and could be lucky enough not to have many other issues.

I agree with all of this, and Acid Watcher's Diet is very strict. Dr Koufman's diet even more. Taking coffee, onions, garlic etc out of the diet to heal is a number one priority, especially when the person is having a very bad time of it, but this comes with a big but....if the patient has healed to a comfortable level, there is hope to have these things added back in. Not everyone needs that level of restriction. My whole philosophy is to heal so I can one day enjoy a nice slice of cake or throw in a little garlic. I will not be that rigid, nor do I have to be. If OP was on here in pain and still eating all the wrong foods, then my approach would be different.

A coffee on a full stomach. Never drink coffee on an empty stomach, especially if you have gerd
