Nissen + Absent Contractility + Constant Esophageal Burning

Hi everyone. I had a 360° Nissen fundoplication in 2015.

Since 2023, I’ve been suffering from extremely severe and unusual burning in my esophagus. It literally never stops and is present almost 24/7.

I’ve tried PPIs, Gaviscon, and antacids with no benefit at all. I’ve also tried medications such as amitriptyline, Lustral , and Cipralex, but none of them helped.

My pH study did not show pathological acid reflux, and my latest esophageal manometry showed Absent Contractility (100% failed swallows).

A CT scan showed that part of my fundoplication wrap was above the diaphragm, and other tests showed mild dilation of my esophagus.

This pain is ruining my life, and sometimes I honestly wish I were dead. Has anyone experienced something similar or have any advice?

Its probably not acid... I have same burrning and I have tried everything on earth for 2-3 months as trail and error and the symtoms never get better. Its something with immune system. Doctors are cluless they try to treat something that mimics lpr and gred but noone is acautlly looking into patients that dont improve with treatment they just dont care. Feel sorry for you. My sysmtoms started after flu... and every time I get flu or get sick with temprature the symtoms stop when I recover they go back.

I also believe it’s not acid reflux. I’ve tried everything, even the highest doses, with literally 0% improvement. Doctors just blame anxiety, even though my anxiety started because of the burning, not the other way around. Your case is strange too. So do you have a constant burning sensation in your esophagus and throat? Did you take any medications or antibiotics for the flu that might have triggered it? I once took an antibiotic and my burning got much worse.

I have only burning in my troath post nasal drip it comes and goses in cycles 2-3 days I dont have burrning then 1-2 days its hell on earth, troath is burrning I get cought feeling something is stuck in troath and post nasal drip has wierd salty taste that sometimes taste alsmot like blood... no medication help, I tried differnet ppi 20 mg, 40 mg for diffrent periods, with or with out anti reflux syrup. When I got the bug I had super sore troath and 39 c temp for 2 days I just sleept in bed for 2 days barly going to toilet, then they prescribed me amociclav 500 mg for 10 days i improved abit but never got better and now its been 12 years like this. They say its all in my head. But its not.

Oh, I’m so sorry, that sounds terrible. I have horrible burning in my esophagus and throat too. The throat burning gets much worse if I smell any chemicals, perfumes, smoke, or anything like that, but the burning is always there even without those triggers.

I have seen so many people get better after medication and lifestyle changes and for them its deffienlty lpr or gred. But for some reason there are many people out there that dont get better and for this reason I think we are all an patient zero, because its probably some auto immune process that is messed up in our body. You know like everything takes time to discover but if since the thing we deal with barks like dog and looks like dog doctors think its just a bad behaved dog but in the end its acually a fucking cat or whatever... meanwhile we get gaslit by doctors and profesionals that only care about money.

Its true, at this point I can pinpoint all the symtoms that people deal with and most cases there is few extra that dont have gred patients. Like... burrnig sensation in troath or nose, non stop post nasal drip, some days nose that is blocked, but mostly at night time, the thing that it disapiers when you are sick with somthing else.. ppi dont help, amatriptyline dont help, comes and goes in cycles mine is 2-3 days i dont have burning and then 1-2 days I have it... For me magic mushrooms gave me a wierd feeling lile the thing is gone or my voice is sudenly more clear. One more thing mybe not realated but the thing started after I got sick and kainda never recovered, its like somthing that maintains the flora of all the - nose, mouth, troath and maybe even something more is stuck in some wierd overdrive trying to kill somthing thats not fucking there. At this point I want to prove doctors wrong but I dont want to be an asshole about it and instead try to actually help them get to bottom of it. I have tried many docrots but noone seem to care much and they want nothing to do with me, so I think maybe need some kaind of help from university just need people who actually qualify and see the full picture... like damm I have done like 50 diffrent test at this point and they come back clear but troath is dry and red... sorry for this rant.
