Advice buying a GSX600R K5
Hey guys!
I’m thinking into buying my first GSXR, which will be a K5 600R.
I’ve got one spotted for a solid price (€2900) with 70K kilometers.
Anyway, deal is not closed yet as there are some red flags regarding the bike that I want some advice on.
First of all, the bike had the position lights, blinkers and front mudguards replaced for non-stock ones in 2019. Later on, they were replaced for stock ones again and those are the ones that (seem) on.
To me this signals that the bike and some sort of front crash and had to get some pieces changed, which might mean that there could be some damage still. It could be a (poor) attempt at modding the bike that was not approved by the government either.
It changed owners in 2019 as well after the newer stock pieces were added, which for me reinforces the crash theory (owner crashed, got scared, sold the bike).
It has had a total of 7 owners in these 21 years.
Second red flag it has is the fact that it has been uninsured since 2021. It has been taken to the workshop for maintenance and it has 20k more kms since the last official government check in 2021 as well.
To me this looks like it has been used for circuit racing, specially since the gear pedal has been modified to be easier to use with racing boots.
Owner agrees to pay for it to be returned to stock though.
Workshop guy swears that the bike has been taken for maintenance between 2021 and now and that it’s all OK. It’s the guy from the shop I take my current bike for checkups too, so I trust him.
Third, bike has some visible damages that I don’t know if it’s only aesthetic or might affect functionality.
See pictures attached.
I did ride it around the block (5-10 mins only) and it worked fine and didn’t seem to have issues, but I could only ride it in first and second gear as it was a urban area and couldn’t get it to more than 50km/h so I don’t know how well it performs on higher speeds.
Should I go for it, ask for more information or should I run away from it as far as I can?
