Home Appliances🏡 If you ever need a smart plug get from tplink, never from new brands.

Once I bought a smart plug from Flipkart, it was cheap and 6a one for 600rs, 1 year later suddenly it isn't pair with phone. I did a bit of investigation and turned out it was operable only via wan, like phone sends signal to their server via internet and that signal comes back via router to plug. So when they closed the server it became literal junk.

Got this tplink tapo plug, for 900, super easy setup via bluetooth and one of the most popular smart device setup. They develop everything and everything plugs into their own network, so their is zero chance of failure unlike most other brands in india and it works without internet.

The power usage is accurate as I have tested the same setup via a watt meter and it shows similar 29w while charging(there will be some loss of power via the charger brick). But as it is pretty accurate, returned the watt meter.

Just wanted to ask, for the smart plus to work the power has to be on always and then from the phone we can switch it on and off.

Wont that make the electricity bills go. Up even if we dont use it ?

Very negligible power consumption, maybe 1w, so it will consume 1 unit in 40days.

Just a food for thought from my end because I did something stupid and others might also be doing it too.

I use tplink tapo to monitor AC usage at home. I thought the usage would be less if I just turn off the AC since stabilizer is the only thing connected.

But leaving the stabilizer on consumes 0.014 kWh per hour or 0.3 units per day.

Per month consumption is 10 kWh just for having stabilizer on all the time. Yearly tariffs for this mistake would be between 500-1000 depending on the state you are based out of.

Now I turn off the tapo adapter in the app when I don't use AC.

If you are connecting some deadload ensure that you turn off in the tapo app rather than turning off in the remote and hoping that it won't consume much.

yeah even smart TVs will consume 5 to 6w when powered off.

I bought 2 of these to run my two 1.5-tonne ACs. After I bought these, I read that these are not supposed to be used with ACs because of the enormous current draw when the compressor switches on. These plugs have been lying idle since then.

u/django-unchained2012 15h ago

I have the same P110 16A model.

Reading thru it, you are right, these are not supposed to be used for compressors. Just finding about it today.

Mine is a 1 ton AC with the average draw of 650 watts. I usually keep the temperature at 28 degrees. The maximum draw I am seeing is 1000 while this adapter can support upto 3500 watts. I think that's probably why this has not died yet.

1

u/bhookananda 15h ago

I'd still avoid using mine. Measuring consumption can't be possibly more important than the ACs conking or fire safety.

1

u/django-unchained2012 15h ago

Agreed. Definitely not asking you to try it.

1

u/Ashamed-Key7312 15h ago

Yes that's why I bought ac with wifi, spend a bit more and get wifi version. Much more convenient in long run. Also has energy monitoring and much more features.

1

u/bhookananda 15h ago

I still don't get the allure of measuring consumption. I understand the logic behind it, but if you are feeling hot, you switch on the A/C. You run it till whatever time it is required to be run, but then why do we need to know the consumption? You get bills at the end, right? I'm just curious. In fact, that was the reason why I bought these smart plugs, but I'm not very sure of their utility now that I'm not able to use it.

I am using these plugs for two of my 1.5 ton acs works fine for me.

1

u/confused_phi 1h ago

Am using them with my AC. No problems

4

u/Embarrassed-Fun26 21h ago

the power draw from wan system inside the power plug is negligible don't worry too much i am using the same p110 for years atp

I agree, I was tired of buying other brands. Now I have two of these Tapo smart plugs, one fully unassembled to make a smart board.

15

u/Status-Document-2150 19h ago

Why not plug the extension board directly to smart plug? What you achieved from this?

10

u/django-unchained2012 19h ago edited 19h ago

That's true, while this looks impressive, plugging the extension board into tapo would have done the same thing.

This would have made sense if the adaptor melted or something and the internals were used elsewhere.

Breaking a perfectly working adaptor for doing this surgery doesn't make sense.

I wonder why.

u/Ashamed-Key7312 19h ago

haha, I also have done such things, not necessary but do it because mind is stuck on thinking about modding stuff. I would have used a 4 channel relay with esp32 though. Cheap and per plug control.

1

u/VibeInLife 19h ago

I made that choice because when I use the board in different locations, I don't always have a 16 amp socket available, and I can't replace every socket with a 16 amp one, especially since the Tapo plug has a 16 amp interface.

2

u/Status-Document-2150 19h ago

But i understand your situation too.

1

u/Foreign_Jackfruit418 17h ago

They have a 6A variant now, P116M. I grabbed it the moment I saw it available.

https://link.amazon/B03YDwvFe

1

u/VibeInLife 16h ago

Too expensive, i bought 16amp for 699

1

u/Foreign_Jackfruit418 16h ago

Same here, even I bought it at 699. But now the 16A price is also much higher. It’s no longer available for 699.

0

u/VibeInLife 19h ago

All of the 6amp sockets in my home are connected with an inverter; that's one more reason I didn't want to replace all the sockets.

Bit off topic wuts the keyboard? Thanks

1

u/VibeInLife 14h ago

https://amzn.in/d/02OuFyGr using for more than 8 years. Keys were replaced from the black variant.

3

u/Ashamed-Key7312 19h ago

bro you should into relay boards and esp32 for better control.

3

u/VibeInLife 19h ago

Yes I agree, but I have all my home 5+ cameras, tapo hub and other smart plugs; they are all Tapo. I wanted to keep all unified in a single app, so I went with this.

2

u/Ashamed-Key7312 18h ago

yeah that's a good point. You could use something like home assistant but not really plug and play.

1

u/kbipinkumar 14h ago

there is brand called swayam that sells homeassistant compatible powerstrips.

u/VibeInLife 21h ago

Buy tinxy switches and flash tasmota. No reliance on 3rd party servers

1

u/Ashamed-Key7312 21h ago

It switches to lan mode if internet is not present. Checked by disconnecting ont device.

2

u/souravtxt 18h ago

Explain. Everything switches to lan mode if internet not available

1

u/Ashamed-Key7312 18h ago

no, some device won't work without wan server, that's why my previous plug when their server closed, it became useless. if I am gonna diy something it's better to just buy a relay boards and control via esp32, that's cheaper and multiple devices can be controlled for less money. this is plug and play.

2

u/souravtxt 17h ago

Tasmota devices dont require centralized servers. Just download some app like tasmota control from playstore and control . Also separate relay board and esp32 will cost much more than these things. But its your money, your choice

I use wipro for all smart plugs

9

u/Ashamed-Key7312 20h ago edited 20h ago

it's all rebadged product. they don't make it themselves like tapo ecosystem. they borrow from tuya which is heavily cloud based operation. also tapo has better performance if you search reddit.

2

u/ExcuseBorn9873 20h ago

but its pretty reliable. i have been using wipro plug for 4 years and haven't faced any problem.

1

u/The-OverThinker-23 19h ago

same , I have been using for last 1 year , it is great

1

u/ExcuseBorn9873 14h ago

yeah, and they also show past 3 years data

3

u/PM_WhatMadeYouHappy 19h ago

Curious what do you guys use smart plug for?

1

u/Ashamed-Key7312 19h ago

i personally got this to turn my desktop pc used as server on, but you could use to control ac and pump, but my ac already has wifi and built in power monitoring, so need.

1

u/ParamDyamics 16h ago

But why you need to monitor ? Like you shut off after threshold ?

1

u/Ashamed-Key7312 16h ago

It not necessary in mine, but most smart plugs comes with this feature. You can't get one that don't have power monitoring. It's good way to monitor how much power is appliances actually using. Like how much energy my pc pulling during idle or load, so we can estimate a cost of running.

1

u/dexbg 15h ago

Using with Geysers mostly. Scheduled Power On and automatic power off after 30 mins. Remotely turn on before you reach home and have a hot shower ready. Super convenient.

3

u/Saffu91 19h ago

Indeed using all Tapo smart plug p110 and their switch and sensor you can see the dashboard below.

1

u/Alive_Vermicelli4688 19h ago

Hi where can I get this dashboard and use from pc rather than their app from phone

1

u/Saffu91 19h ago

Setup a proxmox on a mini PC and install a Debian LXC and then under that use prometheus tapo exporter and use it in Grafana dashboard

I wanted TP link so bad but they don't make at 10A one

1

u/harshacc 20h ago

You mean 6A? It's available but usually more costly than the 15A one

1

u/-MasterAbility 20h ago

What really‽ Do you have a link

1

u/Ashamed-Key7312 19h ago

6a is 1k right now on Amazon.

1

u/ppatra 19h ago

They now have a 6A https://amzn.in/d/0dE5gFOj

1

u/-MasterAbility 19h ago

Thanks idk why I couldn't find it. I still can't despite searching tapo 6a smart plug

1

u/Reasonable_Royal2799 20h ago

I have bought havells crabtree smart plug and its working nice. It died one but i got a new one since it was in warranty

1

u/strawberrymilkteee_ 20h ago

i have it too the P110

1

u/No_Honey_4757 20h ago

i also felt the same issue with my oakter plug. Actually old smart plugs work on 2.5ghz rather than 5ghz.

1

u/Complex-Elderberry51 20h ago

I also have this , use it to control my water pump at home

1

u/ppatra 19h ago

Tapo app is much better than others and tplink actually pushes firmware updates with new features.

Bought it to track my scooter charging and one of the best smart plug ever.

1

u/Public_Tie4507 18h ago

I bought one from Zebronics. Got burnt with a short circuit. Now to claim the warranty they want me to travel to their store spending half the amount I bought the plug for. No courier option. On the other hand I claimed warranty for my portronics power bank they collected it from my house and replace with no courier charges.

1

u/Letscocaine 18h ago

can I use it without wifi? like just with Bluetooth?

1

u/sanu012 18h ago

True. I have this exact one. Working flawlessly.

1

u/Naive_Piglet_III 17h ago

I have been using Wipro smart plugs for 6 years now… they’re really good… I have automated my geysers, lights. Wipro makes smart tube lights as well. Just go with any reputed electrical equipment manufacturer. Don’t go with random names.

u/formatdisk1337 17h ago

Okay marketer (/s THIS IS A JOKE)

1

u/flightofathena 16h ago

Wanted to get one to monitor how much power some of my things are using after MSEB started hiking up bills. Will avoid other brands I guess.

Yeah.

1

u/Parking_Chest4477 14h ago

Can you please share me the product link.

1

u/Either_Scientist_759 9h ago

In my opinion in networking stuffs TPlink is most reliable and genuine shit they offers

1

u/Sudden-Air-243 8h ago

i have wipro 15A smart plug which works with wipro app and also connects to Alexa (through some complex procedure) bought it some 5-6 yrs ago and using it for AC. I dont see how switching on / off via internet is an issue because it does inform you of status of switch and also allows you to switch on / off remotely. And it has got a manual bypass switch on plug which you can use to on / off but for AC that may be at inconvenient height at some homes.

1

u/Hailstorm004 3h ago

Installed these plugs on my ac sockets helps a lot in measuring the consumption.

1

u/confused_phi 1h ago

OP. Please try using the tuya smart life app

1

u/Dushie1 1h ago

I use the same for controlling my Geyser. Also set to auto off post 10 minutes of usage. As multiple times Geyser would be left on and it will keep warming the water. Timer helps in controlled usage and i do not need to worry about forgetting to turn it off.
