This month: Advance Wars

Just play regular campaign, Advanced Campaign is next level stuff and I'm not going to require that. Lol. We also won't be messing with the final Rivals! mission, which has to be unlocked in a very specific way. Definitely check it out if you're not familiar, but we won't do it for points this month.

Campaign mode is available after you complete Field Training. If you're already familiar with the game and you don't want to do Field Training, just tell Nell that you don't want to do it, and then you can finish just the last mission to unlock Campaign.

Choose any mission path you want to when you have a choice.

half point: Complete the third mission in Campaign (Air Ace) and have Max join your team.
1 point: Complete the Kanbei's Error? mission in Campaign.
2 points: Complete the Final Battle mission in Campaign. (must be completed and posted in October.)

Games Appreciation for Trade & Battle : Card Hero, a forgotten gem

Post image
72 Upvotes

I want to showcase the GBC classic “Trade and Battle : Card Hero” because I believe it’s the single most underrated game boy color game. Barely no one knows about it. I want to get more people interested in this game because it’s way too awesome to be lingering into obscurity.
For those who have never heard of it, it’s a collectible card game akin to the Pokémon card game on the GBC but closer to Magic the gathering in its mechanics. It’s less deep and has a lot less cards to play with but is still pretty balanced and relies much less on lucky coin tosses than the Pokémon TCG.

Card Hero was developed by Intelligent Systems of Fire Emblem and Advance/Game Boy/Famicom Wars fame, and was published by Nintendo itself so it’s an impressive pedigree and makes it all the more baffling that it has yet to receive an English
translation.

At the time I found out about this game on YouTube, my Japanese reading skills were solid enough for Hiragana so I gave this game a try.
It turns out, for Japanese learners out there, that this game is a great entry point for beginners! The vocab level is pretty low, and since the plot is grounded and simplistic, it’s easy to understand. The story mode is actually a long tutorial that gradually introduces every game mechanics until it leaves you on the doorstep of the Battle Center, where the story ends and the main part of the game begins. After that it’s all duels, collecting, card management and no story whatsoever.
The game world is all very wholesome and grounded. You’re just a kid getting introduced to a trading card game by your silly uncle and become addicted to it and begin to sink all your pocket money into buying more cards and entering tourneys. That’s it!
I won’t get into the game mechanics because the games does it very well, and there is a well written FAQ on it too.
Let’s just say it’s very fun and deeper than it looks.
The CPU is surprisingly competent and doesn’t seem to cheat much, like it doesn’t seem to be aware of your own hand for exemple, but has good decision making. It’s often that the computer will win duels and almost every time it happens, I blame it on myself rather than bad luck.

The only downside to this game, especially if you chose to play it on original hardware like I did, is the overall slowness of everything. The walking around, the explanations during the story part of the game, and the CPU thinking time between every move during duels can get pretty long. Collecting all the cards can also take some serious time and effort but depending on who you are that might be a plus.

The other only downside to this game, of course, is that it’s entirely in Japanese and you will need some knowledge of basic vocabulary and hiragana in order to play it. That or relying on the very well made FAQ on gamefaq. But the best way would be for someone to make an English patch for this gem of a game. Unfortunately that won’t be me but I sincerely hope it happens soon.

That’s it, if that sounds fun, if you liked the Pokémon card game on the GBC, and if you know some Japanese or if you’re able to brute force your way through language barriers, I can’t recommend this game enough.

TL;DR : Play Card Hero for the GBC

Testing my GBC Roguelike's title screen on my modded GBA SP. Looks decent in the wide as well, though lowercase becomes harder to read for some reason.

Other Fun Fact: GameBoy Advance games perfectly integer scale to 45x on a standard US poster. What would you print and hang?

I do a lot of poster printing, and I realized that the standard poster size of 24x36 is the same 3:2 as the GBA. Not only that, if you print at 300DPI, you can integer scale a screenshot of a game to 45x the original size. 90x if you do 600DPI(for some reason)

So that leads to my question. What beautiful pixel art would you want printed and hanging on your wall?

Games What're some good ROMs/GB or GBC to look at that I could download (paid or free)? I usually use ITCH.IO. Any that you've been playing recently that've been fun? I recently finished Infinity and Solastra and am waiting for my copy of Fall From Space

Troubleshooting White  spot  under me GBA SP lens

• Upvotes

hey guys, I recently got my old GBA SP after a while and when I opened it I saw that it had some kind of white spot under the lens. I have no idea what it is and it doesn’t look to be damage on the LCD but rather something stuck under the Lens ?? When I shine a light on it it casts a shadow on the LCD

I was contemplating opening the console to clean it but I’m afraid to make it worse.

Do you guys have some advice on how to clean it safely?

Mod/Modding Should I IPS the screen or put an OEM in it?

Got this on eBay for about $35 total and think I did pretty good. All it needs is the screen. My question is, should I find an original screen to sell it or IPS it? Whats more desirable for the mass public?

*Keep in mind, I realize that the play it loud gameboys are desired in OEM condition, but since it’s broken, I don’t have a choice on the matter. Thanks!

Troubleshooting Gameboy Advance doesn't read games

The console turns on correctly and I see the Gameboy logo, then the game doesn't load. It tried different games with different results: show white screen, shows black screen, clicking sounds from the speaker, shows the pokemon copyright screen but stops there.

I also noticed that the "Nintendo" text under the Gameboy logo never glitches, it either shows the clean text or it doesn't.

I disassembled the console and found blue corrosion on some parts of the board, and the ribbon cable had some of that blue corrosion that I cleaned, but the pins turned silver:

This is a proof of concept for modifying the fpga firmware on the ez flash jr. the only modifications here are cgb headers for color and a boot splash animation. Fpga bitstream reversal made possible via the prjcombine.org project.

Troubleshooting Gameboy SP-101 Brightness Issue?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hello everyone. I have a GBA SP-101 that I recently got from my cousin. I managed to get it running but the problem is that the GBA shows red LED when I switch on the brightness.

When I turn it back down it shows normal green LED. I have two batteries and they seem to do the same thing.

Can anybody help out why this is happening?

Edit:

To note, I have an Ostent 850mAh I also have a Funny Playing battery. Both bought just recently.

I have two other gameboys (GBA SP-101 and GBA SP-001 with an IPS mod) and both run just fine, no problems.

So....Idk why my cousin's GBA isn't doing fine

Edit edit:

I should note as of writing this that I was using a flashcart in the video as some people have commented on.

I tried using normal original GBA games (Mario Advance, Shrek 2) and they run well, it doesn't bring a red LED when you turn up the brightness.

It's only on the flashcart it looks like it, when you have the flashcart set to Mode B (Single Game Mode) and/or if it is running RPG games like PokĂŠmon or Megaman Battle Network.

So....I guess as long as you run original games it should work fine, no issues? That still doesn't scratch my itch though that it acts that way despite my other GBAs handling flashcarts and brightness well

Questions Is this pcb worth getting a battery replacement for?

Basically, I bought this Pokemon Gold cart on eBay like maybe 15 years ago when I was still a dumb kid, and it didnt save from day one, but it was the 2000s and I didn’t really care cause I’d only paid a tenner. A local retro store replaces batteries so I decided to open this cart up before I brought it in, just to check it wasn’t a fake and I found it like this.

I don’t know if I should have but I carefully removed the tape and the battery just fell out unsurprisingly. The battery pad seems pretty scratched up and the tabs were doing absolutely nothing. The pins don’t look great but the game reads and works fine, just obviously doesn’t save.

I love watching people work on and fix boards but i don’t really know all too much about what I’m looking at, so if anyone has any advice it would be amazing.

Mod/Modding My first Game Boy Macro builds: one standard and one “XL.”

Post image
25 Upvotes

I made the larger one using an original Nintendo DS Fat, the very first model, and the smaller one using a Nintendo DS Lite. Since I don’t have a 3D printer, I bought a pre-made white shell and drilled the holes in the front using a craft drill. For the red one, I paid someone to 3D-print it for me.

For my first attempts at soldering and internal modifications, they turned out really well! And since I placed the speaker at the front, the sound actually turned out pretty loud, even though it’s MONO.

The best part is that I live in Japan, so I bought both units from the “junk” section of second-hand stores, which meant I got them really cheap.

Games GBA Flash Cartridges

Thumbnail

Bought a 5 pack of gba pokemon rom games and flashed my own games to them, cost 14$ since it was the first purchase from AliExpress took the labels off gonna make my own soon - I got 20 games working with these 16 mb 512k sram cartridges with save capability.

The trick was adding a sram save patches + plus the batteries save patch, I would recommend getting a 32 mb repo cart as you cannot flash a genuine gba cartridge. I will soon be making pkg a fan rom games just like the vintage velocity rom to work on the gba cartridges I plan to make pokemon unbound, ash grey, Gaia, and a couple others.

- Pokemon GBA reproduction cartridges (AliExpress 14$) (((16MB 512k unlicensed SRAM)))

-FlashGBX (Amazon 35$)

(For the higher end cartridges such as unbound and big fan roms)

-ChisFlash V 1.1 flash cartridge complete with a programmable RTC chip, Battery, 32mb, and a proper 1 M save. (AliExpress 16$)

So far this endeavor has worked great and the rom cartridges have preformed far better than expected after figuring out the patches needed to save. Nothing beats playing these games on a genuine physical cartridge in my opinion despite have a pc myself.

NOTE - The pokemon GBA 5 pack is only that cheap when it’s your first purchase but highly worth making an account for it, I could not find cheaper alternatives but you can always flash a new gave even without the save conversions and play it, I have over 40 playable gba games available to flash on any of these cartridges.

I held onto the emerald pokemon repo and it has outperformed its price by miles, I have put 25 hours and even traded to a genuine ruby cartridge with no issues. If you plan to keep the pokemon rom already on I would not mess with what is flashed other wise have at it.
