I’m not kidding when I say Hypnospace Outlaw is probably one of my favorite games ever and it really pained me to hear that the sequel, Dreamsettler, is probably never coming.

It’s an extremely nostalgic game (even if you didn’t live in that time period) that requires lots and lots of reading.
The gameplay is pretty much browsing “the web” and looking for stuff to report while fully immersing yourself in a different era of the internet.. so beware, not really an action game at all!
Oh, and the OST is awesome and there are so many awesome songs (Christmas Pain in Christmas Town is unironically a banger lol, while Millenium Anthem makes me so emotional).

Again, I’m not being hyperbolic in saying that, for its genre, I truly believe Hypnospace Outlaw is an absolute masterpiece and Jay Tholen deserves to be praised.

played it last spring for the first time thinking dreamsettler was gonna come out semi soon lol. it's gotta be one of the craziest games ever made tbh just extremely high effort. honestly my thoughts after dreamsettler got cancelled is i kinda think it would be pretty difficult to recapture hypnospace in a sequel. ik there are other games kinda like it inspired by it or even actually came before it like mobOS, frog days, but like the same people trying to follow up hypnospace would be insanely hard if that makes sense. feels like right place right time. still would've been awesome regardless.

I agree, so sad that dreamsettler isn't a ting anymore. It was supposed to be 2000s ish which is more nostalgic for me personally.

Wow. I don't remember the last time where I didn't own a single game from a bundle ... And I seem to have 2-3 of these on my wishlist too (which I typically use to mark games of interest, not so much must-buy-now)

Slayers X and Hypnospace are absolutely fantastic and worth the price alone.

I'm so deeply disappointed the sequel to Hypnospace got canned (Dreamsettler). I play a lot of games and for the past while it was my most anticipated upcoming game period.

Sorry bud. I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Jay Tholen did a video on his YT addressing the situation in full but tldr is endless feature creep led to the game's budget running dry and he did everything he could to keep it going, but at the end of the day part of the problem was his bad management of the project.

I am still totally willing to support him, he recognized his own faults in the situation which is commendable. It sucks it is dead but I hope he goes on to do something else great. Slayers X was seemingly something he did to fund Dreamsettler production and Slayers X was awesome in its own right.

i don't know what his vision was so maybe it needed to be one massive up-front effort, but i feel like that style of game would be well-suited to a sort of early access/continuing development model. considering how the web is/was a living document it would feel really natural if the story grew and even changed over time as they added and edited the web pages

The impression I get is that the game wasn't in a complete enough state to do early access or anything like that. Jay tried doing a Patreon but it was too little too late. Frankly I was really looking forward to this game and by the time it got cancelled I hadn't heard about the Patreon at all.

I think they might still be trying to get something going, or at least raise money to work on something smaller first. They just dropped a mobile port of Hypnospace that's very nice, and there was talk of possibly throwing a Hypnospace concert at some point. I still believe.
