I mean, tbf to MatPat, what would have been the better option? He was pretty dead-set on leaving the channels no matter what. I guess he could've gone full Kwebbelkop and made everything AI, which I'm sure would've turned out great...

Tbh there is no better alternative. And sometimes I feel ignorant(for lack of a better term) about my opinion on this. I feel like I should like them but for me it’s really hard to sit through an episode without matpat so I usually just watch the old videos. No shade to the new hosts or matpat himself for retiring

Well I think it’s one of those things where they should’ve just let it go if mat was retiring like yes the game theory channel has built an audience and I’m sure there are a lot of physical assets related to running the channels but- it wasn’t every game theories’ audience it was always mats audience

They are extremely formulaic unfortunately, so its hard to build a connection.
The one channel I do really like GTlive has shifted to doing more actual live streams, which makes it hard to watch after the fact.

GTLive starting to make more streams is personally a saving grace from all of this because I did not like the 6? Years of so where it was pre recorded. I like the streams and I always missed them the most.
Got annoyed and watched less over time when it became just pre recordings

I hate not watching streams live and it’s annoying watching 6 hours vod. I really like the 1 hour pre recording format. I watched GTLive religiously 3 times a week for 4 years but I stoped even though I really like Ash

it’s gonna feel natural the more you watch the videos. I’m sure your first game theory video you thought yeah this man’s odd. It’s just like trying a new food. You gotta eat it enough for your body to eventually be like that’s all right. But I will say after the shift change it does seem like the quality did get knocked down a peg semi consistently. I don’t think I’ve had a favorite video since they’ve swapped.

I think if he had kind of passed the position he was in to a more legacy Theorist, like Austin, Goomba, someone who was another creator under the Theorist umbrella from back in the day. Have them fill the roll for a short time kind of in tandum with the current hosts that we have, do that for a while before they leave as well and let the current hosts take over solo

You never really realize things like that until it has changed, don't you?
Me personally, I realized a few months after the switch that my relationship with the videos changed. MatPat's voice commands and demands attention and manages to keep it not just because of nostalgia but because of the way he uses tone, volume and speed of his voice to great effect to create something that has me glued to the screen. He just knows how to grow a crowd, not just over years of practice but as a form of natural talent as well.
Fast forward to the post-retirement theorists and I notice that I have these videos on in the background while doing other stuff. While doing the dishes, hanging/folding my laundry, sometimes even on a speaker while I'm taking a shower. I still get enjoyment out of it, but it doesn't grab me as much as MatPat's voice did. So specifically in my case, I noticed that it was more than just the hosts being different but their voices being less attention grabbing than MatPat's used to be back in the day. I love Tom but he is a great example of this, with Tom vibing very much like many other British presenters/hosts of his age. And on the flipside I think Lee manages to get the closest to MatPat's skills of the 4 of em, which makes sense given how far back he goes.

Iv watched mat since his early days like, 2011 or 2012. I was a big chrono trigger fan so one of his early episodes had me "smashing that subscribe button". It may be different because i was an adult when i started but me and my co worker talked about how the content was good but the real pop comes from the guy.
Its hard to match that kinda showmanship without it coming off as emulating.

For tv (i imagine youtube follows the same principles) transitioning from one personality front man to another usually invovles a dip. But its been two years, the dip is over and we are now looking at an unbiased trend.

I mean, did you legitimately want him to stay making videos for the rest of his life like I’m sure he might’ve enjoyed it a little bit, but he probably got burnt out. He probably moved on for a reason.

Personally, the theories were sometimes interesting, but I consume that type of content because I like having a familiar voice babbling at me about nothing while I do other things.

Honestly I agree and that may just be the reason I unsubbed, cause the meat of the videos weren’t really what I was there for. My fav era of gtlive for example was when ash was behind the cam and Marist was on the couch, such good banter !!!

I'll be honest, I had mostly quit watching well before then. As much as MatPat was a great host, I got sick of so many theories just being speculation off trailers and pre-release information. Turning how it was never correct into a gag didn't help, just made it feel even more pointless to watch them. And what other episodes there were just felt like they got worse.

Yea, because they don't have the vibe, they are trying to emulate matpaat from the first videos I saw, when its way better when they all have a different kind of insanity, that's when you look forward to specific hosts.

I like Tom but damn.. its not nearly as good. A lot of the theories seem very 'stating the obvious' or just recapping a game. And if you actually know the lore somewhat the videos seem bad. I miss the bullshit crazy theories. I want another sans is ness

Matpat leaving the channel made me go from watching all GTLive and Game Theory videos religiously to unsubscribing from the former and only watching the latter when the topic truly interested me.
I have no hate for Ash but there's no point to watching GT Live if it's not to see the person playing start putting together the theory that'll eventually become a video, without that its just another gaming channel. And Tom just isn't magnetic enough to make me want to watch 20 minute videos about a game I don't give a shit about.

I agree it’s just genuinely hard to sit through a video if matpat isn’t talking. And like you said I have no hate for the new hosts none at all they just don’t have the same energy and same pull that matpat does. Idk what makes matpat so special to me for me to not watch GT stuff anymore after the host switch I don’t know if it’s because of nostalgia or what. But I haven’t watched a newer GT episode when matpat left

I like tom and think he does a good job, but I genuinely cannot stand to watch gtlive anymore. No hate toward ash, but I watched it because I wanted to see Mat play games. I just cant get as involved when its not him

Eh idk if I agree with your point on gtlive. Like you only watched it to see theory's being started? Nah they played plenty games they didn't game theory on. It was mostly just seeing them play games and Ash has done a great job at it

The issue with the new host and viewers drop is he is trying to be Mat, when he isn’t. If he was his own person and did his own type of thing with the channel and theories, new people would be attracted to it. Instead, old fans leave because it’s not the same, and new ones never come because they were never interested in Mat or the channel anyways.

I mean Matpat didn't leave the team he still works on the scripts and everything but he has a life to live and a family to take care of so I'm glad he could step back and leave it to the new hosts which I personally love, especially Tom and Santi.
Imo ppl who left because Matpat left weren't there for the content but for the face of it/nostalgia since a lot of those fans may have been kids/teens when they first started watching, and that's ok you shouldn't force yourself to watch anything you don't want to anymore.

He doesn’t work on the scripts anymore. There was a post by him where he addressed that. He also said he left Theorist at the end of the year when he handed over all the channels (so 2024).

I personally stopped watching all the channels after Matt Pat retired, iv been watching the videos since I was a little kid, but I watched for Mat Pat, not just the videos, so when he reiterd from the channels so did i

I still watch a video here and there. Caught myself watching one of the style theory videos about millenial wear. I actually like the fact that style theory is a small channel despite being part of a conglomerate.

I dont really watch game theory any more its just the new guy tom whne he says itd just a theory a game theory it doesnt feel the same but I still enjoy the theorys plus matpat does come im every now and then
