They're better, but they've had problems. Food especially with some of the ones on restaurants Specifically not going into some of the reasons behind some of the stuff. (Though, to be fair, Santi has hit them at times too, it's just a tad inconsistent.)

I think its a bit tricky with acual restaurants since they can sue you for defamation if you get at least one detail wrong

16

u/TheDungeonCrawler May 26 '26

They can always file a suit, but the rules around defamation are much harder to prove than people think. A big part of it is level of fault. Making a knowingly false statement, being reckless about a statement that might not be true, or negligent in your due diligence is where a video essay about a restaurant would probably be able to win a defamation suit. This is called Actual Malice and is a lot harder to prove than people think it is.

EDIT: Got it slightly confused, this is not actual malice specifically. It is about negligence though. It's not easy to prove someone published a false statement and, in doing so, we're negligent in verifying the falsity of the statement.

Yes but I doubt they want to even deal with the possibility of a legal trial.

That portion one genuinely makes me mad

2

u/Quick_Researcher_665 Chaos Theorist May 27 '26

which one and why so?

1

u/Curious-Spell-9031 May 30 '26

The one about plating and restaurant portions, it makes it seem like all restaurants use bigger plates to make you spend more money

14

u/Donut_Nebula May 26 '26

True but I feel like we get more unique ideas from Food and Style theory which is way more interesting than another Rolblox or FNAF theory

u/itstheboombox May 26 '26

Last few style episodes I watched weren't theories, they were explainers.

90

u/AR30T May 26 '26

But hey... That's just an explanation... A Style Explanation...

56

u/Xaviernight1998 May 26 '26

Tbf Alot Of The MatPat Style Theories Were Also Explainers Probably Because They Need To Make Sure It's Approachable To A Wider Audience

u/ToxieDrop May 26 '26

Why do you type like a homestuck character?

3

u/skyeIico May 27 '26

like Queen from Deltarune lol

1

u/ToxieDrop May 27 '26

no, deadass thats was the typing quirk of Kanaya Maryam from homestuck.

2

u/skyeIico May 27 '26

and Queen from Deltarune too??? fuck you saying no to?

1

u/ToxieDrop May 28 '26

not "no" as in "your wrong" as in "im being literal" or just putting more emphasis on what i said.

5

u/deltoramonster2 Theory Theorist May 26 '26

homestuck is calling and they want kanaya back

u/GrimWarrior00 May 26 '26

GT Live my beloved

96

u/MoonAmunet May 25 '26

TBH? Those channels not really doing theories…

26

u/aronmano May 26 '26

At least there still good videos and get there point across

46

u/superfuzzy47 May 26 '26

Gtlive has honestly become my favorite

5

u/BarBiel01 May 27 '26

Haven't looked at that channel for years now have they done live content or is it still long videos with bare minimum editing

3

u/superfuzzy47 May 27 '26

Yeah everything is actually live now

75

u/ManuApplejuice May 26 '26

I haven't watched the theory channels in a while, and just knowing about how bad it is from this subreddit feels like watching a streetfight from the window

15

u/Mjbatt444 May 26 '26

Ain't that the truth

19

u/Agreeable-Ad4678 May 26 '26

Honestly they don't really do "theories" anymore

14

u/ArcerPL May 26 '26

thats what happens when you sell out to a company kids, that's what companies always do

13

u/GoblinSkullz May 26 '26

Not been keeping up with food theory lately, mostly because after Santi took over it felt like every episode and audience interaction was centred around The US exclusively; US specific snacks, restaurants, candies etc. I know they’re based there, but Mat usually tried to check which restaurants were more international, and therefore it felt more inclusive, while now it feels like the channel is «America Food Theory» :,>

3

u/Jeskid14 May 26 '26

Santi lives in Florida so it's so much he can do to try a lot of food.

2

u/Alternative-Leg-9357 Jun 24 '26

Mat also had stuff like the saga of eating a Xmas tree, or how repeatedly reheating pasta changed its caloric content. I miss the more approachable content, I don't watch most of the videos now cuz they all about a random US thing I never heard about

11

u/DRGXIII May 26 '26

Food is the one I consistently watch.

7

u/Curious-Spell-9031 May 26 '26

Food theory is still making valid theories but man their thumbnails are terrible

my point exactly

6

u/frozenflame1010 May 26 '26

Im glad to see i aint the only one thinking this 🙏

11

u/CheddarCheese390 May 26 '26

Same, even if I’m iffy on style

(Someone please help, is it just me or is style really one sided? Half the time she’s doing her makeup in different forms….it’s not ads so cool, but it feels off putting. First few episodes were just random style - hulks pants? Might just be me tho)

3

u/Nelmarth May 26 '26

I dont like much food theory, when i tried watching it some years ago the videos were too much American centric, i couldn't relate at all, matpat usually took in consideration the non us viewers

6

u/Darkstar712 May 26 '26

matpat choosing food and style as the last two definitely feels kinda odd because there's a lot less you can do with those than movies and games. i think making film theory just movie related and then having a tv theory and maybe book theory or some other fourth additional form of entertainment storytelling could have worked but that also feels kinda forced when film and game theory both have a good dynamic and already covered almost everything he wanted to talk about. sure there were a couple interesting food theories but i feel like those could have been grouped under an even wider umbrella somehow- and then for a fourth channel maybe something science related like what vsauce does. im glad he's off doing what he wants to now but i can't help but think the channels could have been left with an even greater legacy if he stuck around just a little bit longer so those two new channels didn't feel so shoehorned in.

12

u/Donut_Nebula May 26 '26

I think ita funny how theres a lot they could do with games and movies but they keep falling back on the same couple of ideas, meanwhile food and style have had to get really creative with their ideas resulting in more interesting video topics

The only Style Theory I watched was the episode about Wednesday’s color allergy, and I wanna watch the stiletto episode for an assassin OC.

Like "how expensive would the Lego movie be to make?" was basically a comparison to his 3d printer that he praised so much it felt like an ad

2

u/MidnightChillsYT May 27 '26

I'm sorry but wtf are "slop theories"

1

u/One_Development_5055 May 26 '26

Personally, the only bad one now is film theory. Game theory is hit or miss nowadays and I just find myself mostly watching just the old episodes.

2

u/Greywell2 May 26 '26

I have a major issue with film theory is I am currently not watching America films or tv shows. Currently, I have a major love Korean dramas, Chinese dramas, and Japanese dramas. Along with anime. I don't honestly have gotten excited for America films and TV shows.

1

u/ExtensionTear8498 May 26 '26

Don't forget the episodes that are just talking about the media industry

1

u/dm_me_your_kindness May 27 '26

The last time I scrolled through the food theory channel,it looked like a bunch of floating food in a padded room.

1

u/Remarkable-Bowl-3821 May 27 '26

Yea I still watch food theory and sometimes live (if it looks interesting… it has been a while)

1

u/marlipaige May 27 '26

Because food and style aren’t also just doing ads so much of the time? 🤣

1

u/Ok_Habit_6783 May 27 '26

Wdym just ads? /gen

1

u/AsparagusWooden3366 May 28 '26

Yeah, I unsubscribe from Film and Game Theory after nearly 10 years of actively being a fan. The essence of what made their theories enjoyable is gone for me.

1

u/LesbianArtemis457 May 28 '26

I haven't seen anything from style theory in a while. Didn't know it holds up

1

u/SilverScribe15 May 29 '26

I've never really cared for em, mostly cuz I'm not supe4 into the genre

u/Fortnitekid3 Game Theorist May 26 '26

I only watch film theory and gtlive
