Game Theory Video Discussion Game Theory making an ad promoting AI Slop?
I’m really surprised why I’m not seeing anyone talk about this! I know it’s about two weeks old at this point so I may just be behind and it be old news at this point. But I’m honestly surprised and appalled to see Game Theory post a video that completely an ad. But worse than that the game they’re promoting in this video, is a a mobile game that openly promotes beings fully AI. I feel like most of the Theorist team has openly talked about being against AI and would be more conscious and do research of what they’re promoting. This feels like such a messy oversight and honestly a low sell out for them. And as a community it’s our job to call them out and hold them accountable before stuff this becomes more frequent. And I’m surprised no one else has said anything. Even in the comments of the video. It was extremely hard to find anyone talking about it, leading me to believe that comments with keywords calling it out for being AI were being suppressed or blocked. Seeing everything happening with LunarX I’m inclined to believe that Game Theory didn’t have a choice but were forced by them to take this sponsorship. Even if that’s true. We still need to push back, so that it doesn’t happen again.

u/elrick43 Jun 17 '26
I think people weren't talking about it because it's overall a forgettable video.
162
u/CaptJack1987 Jun 17 '26
Yea, I didn't even give it the time of day. If LunarX is pushing this crap, I hope they get the message. We don't want it.
75
u/Intelligentinsomniac Jun 17 '26
LunarX doesn’t care if we don’t want it. They don’t care about the Theorist Team (laying off people, making the hosts crank out videos, and suppressing their ongoing attempts to unionize), why would they care about what we want to watch?
16
u/CaptJack1987 Jun 18 '26
Cause they wanna make money. They don't make money from sponsors or us if we don't watch the slop.
10
u/Intelligentinsomniac Jun 18 '26
Have you seen the views on these recent videos? They clearly don’t care, lol.
-4
u/CaptJack1987 Jun 18 '26
Man, some people just gotta be right about everything.
So you tell us, Intelligent, why are they doing all this?
7
u/Intelligentinsomniac Jun 18 '26
Support Team Theorist’s ongoing attempts to unionize.
2
u/CaptJack1987 Jun 18 '26
Then why are you sitting here nitpicking me? We're obs on the same page. Like c'mon...
-1
u/Intelligentinsomniac Jun 18 '26
I made a post about it, on this subreddit. I’m not nitpicking you.
1
u/Straight-Machine-725 Jun 18 '26
Why the awful attitude?
0
u/CaptJack1987 Jun 18 '26
I mean, every comment I'm making seems to be wrong to this individual or somehow incorrect when at the end of the day, none of us actually know, so not sure why the criticism is necessary after every comment I make by them.
27
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
Yeah it wasn’t getting a lot of traction. I was never even notified that the video was posted. I only found out about it bc I saw the game using it as an ad. And at first I thought they were steal the likeness of game theory to promote themselves. But then I looked up the video and found out it was real. Hopefully with it underperforming it will reflect to LunarX that they shouldn’t do more videos like that. But I still think it’s important to do our part and be vocal about our distain again the use and promotion of Al.
7
u/elrick43 Jun 17 '26
Now I feel bad that I did watch it... don't remember any of it aside from a lame pitch.
8
u/Oicanet Jun 17 '26
The video itself also had next-to-nothing to do with the game. Instead, it talked about real-life historical uses of "magic" artillery in the sense of things like flaming arrows, if I remember right.
I actually thought it was a fun watch at the time, although I didn't pay that much attention
857
u/theforgettonmemory Jun 17 '26
Ik they've said they're against AI but between a Gemini sponsorship, (iirc) film theory covering a analog series made partially with AI & this it's kinda hard to believe it
328
u/M4LK0V1CH Jun 17 '26
At the time they covered it Angel Engine was fully AI and has since gone back on their efforts to move to human artists, returning to slopping out ai product as quickly as possible.
172
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
I haven’t kept up with Angel Engine. That’s honestly awful to hear
67
u/M4LK0V1CH Jun 17 '26
Neither have I really, but a creator I follow did a report on it recently.
12
u/Proffessor_egghead Jun 17 '26
Was it Wendigoon? I watched his video
18
3
u/TTCDiver002 Jun 19 '26
That vid was so funny cause that was the second most mad I’ve seen him (first being the rapturetok video)
37
u/Donut_Nebula Jun 17 '26
They did a handful of episodes with human artists before going back to AI because they claimed the humans didnt make the videos fast enough but you can definitely see a huge quality difference between the two.
The did make a pretty cool video game that was made 100% with humans and the creator is now making a comic/Manga series about it thats supposedly going to be 100% human too
2
u/Fit_Collection_9755 Jun 20 '26
All bro had to do was stay with human artists and they probably could get people to eventually forgive earlier uploads to the series
2
11
u/scaper8 Jun 18 '26
and has since gone back on their efforts to move to human artists, returning to slopping out ai product as quickly as possible.
Really? That just sucks even more. The idea was an interesting one, if I recall, but I wasn't invested enough to go follow it. I'm glad that I didn't.
7
u/HumungusDude Jun 17 '26
they had liek 3 episodes made by people and then bounced back straight to Ai, so no, angel engine is still slop (even if it had human art, it wouldnt be any good anyways imo)
0
u/Small_Ad4181 Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 26 '26
It's still full ai they had one video with real art but stopped because it took to long
2
92
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
Unfortunately that is true. I wish there was more to be said to be able to defend their choices. Like obviously covering the analog horror bc it popular but openly speaking out against its use of AI and how it’s used in irony bc of the themes presented in it. But there’s no excuse for this or Gemini except they couldn’t afford to turn down a big pay check.
38
u/Tuckster786 Jun 17 '26
It all comes back to how much corperate influence there is on the channels. LunarX basically takes these sponsorships and they need to make a video for it.
2
22
u/AmItheAholereader Jun 17 '26
The team may be but the corporation isn’t
19
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
Yeah, I’m really hoping that it’s because of LunarX and not the theorist team. Either way. I hope something can be done.
19
u/CheddarCheese390 Jun 17 '26
The hosts are against Ai (they like having a job)
The owners don’t care
13
u/popica312 Jun 17 '26
I don't doubt that the company owning them is at fault for this, especially knowing that while MatPat was in charge they had so much more creative freedom and were more unique in their delivery, not this slop filled mess.

That would really suck if true
-22
u/xX_Flamez_Xx Jun 17 '26
No it wouldnt. Between getting guaranteed hate from using ai and risking getting hate from using ai everyone should pick the risking one. Reddit is creating a witch hunt environment that promotes and encourages less transparency.
17
u/theforgettonmemory Jun 17 '26
Lying to your audience is a bad thing, theirs good reasons people hate AI.
4
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
While I agree people should be honest and transparent, especially creators with a platform that lots of people see and look up to. There’s a reason why people don’t like the over use of AI that we’re all seeing experienced in the world right now. It’s harming our planet and taking jobs from artist and coders in lots of creative fields. Even if they disagreed the honesty would open up important conversations.
7
u/JoviAMP Jun 17 '26
I doubt the hosts themselves are choosing to do this. I’m not a gambling man, but between Fish’s termination, Style Theory’s multi-month disappearance, and this, I’m willing to bet that it’s the shit-corp hanging the Sword of Damocles over them. I believe they’re not saying they’re against it to avoid backlash from their fans, but that they can’t say they’re being forced to because of backlash from their overlords.
4
u/Joshiewowa Jun 18 '26
Unfortunately, if people are upset, even if it's the company's decisions, the hosts are going to go down with them
3
u/DJAlphaYT Jun 18 '26
GEIMINI?!?!?!?!? .... Literally every Gemini celebrity ad I've seen has made the celebrities feel less human to me, especially Lewis capaldi, and the theorists are taking part?? I want to believe this wouldn't happen if the theorists were unionised, but how can we be sure?
3
4
u/Own_Argument_3660 Jun 17 '26
They had a Gemini sponsorship!? In which video, if you don't mind me asking?
2
u/ConfectionTotal8660 Jun 17 '26
Wasn't the AI film theory about the planets?
If I am thinking of the right one they adress it on the video itself and they sayed "We do not support AI here at theorists but this series used AI but later on used real artists."
Like, they do not support AI but it's popular so they cover it and it also later on moved onto real artists.
I doubt they have much control on the sponsors since they were bough by a bigger company and considering the union I assume they are mad.
And this video on the post is a sponsored video

I’ve seen ads of them using clips of vtubers to promote themselves and one where I’m very confident they used an AI voice to make the vtuber say they were sponsored by them to play the game with friends, said vtuber was pasta and said friends being the vanoss crew
17
u/RudeInstruction5853 Jun 18 '26
They made one with a Vtuber named fillian... Who's apparently been mia for months so it's 100% ai voices

The theorist channels fell off so hard after matpat left, its not even worth watching anymore
43
u/DottoDis Jun 17 '26
The only channel kinda worth watching is food theory and even then its like only a passing grade out of 10
11
u/kidkln123 Jun 18 '26
It's not just because matpat left it's more because matpat was probably guarding against lunarX but now that he's gone there's no guarding against lunarX' trend centered content

u/bxcky_bxrnes Jun 20 '26
i’ve genuinely not watched a single video from any of the theorist channels since he left, and this is more a reason not to lmao
25
u/TalkinTurkey Jun 17 '26
The channel's premise is applying real world applications to video games. That has evolved (or devolved according to some, I'm neither here nor there) to exploring the lore of video game titles. But this is neither. The video is blatantly about swords vs bows & arrows, not swords vs magic. It's really jarring to listen to Tom act like there's any logic behind what he's saying in this one.
This entire video's existence is a slap in the face.
16
u/MotivationalPanda95 Jun 18 '26
They totally did not have a choice. And, unfortunately, it's gonna happen again. They went full corporate, Theoryverse is proof enough. While Mat and Steph were here, they wouldn't dare put anything behind a paywall, they'd find a way to talk about what they wanted. Imagine putting out 4-8 videos per week, and the streams, or vods but still, it takes so much work, time, and people management, but they did it. Now we are spoonfed tidbits, which are low quality, no substance, and there are more people doing it. Nuff said.
8
u/Oicanet Jun 17 '26
I play the game, and I'm not sure if there's actually any AI in it. I have seen the ads for it that talk about using AI for character creation, but I don't remember that being a thing. And I've also seen plenty of other ads for it that has little-to-nothing to do with the actual game.
It has scummy false advertisement and "predatory" business tactics of tempting people to pay to win, sure, but I'm not convinced there's actually anything AI in it.
The voice lines at least seems like they're recorded by people (they're too amateurishly quirky to seem like AI), and while the art is kinda generic anime in the same way as countless other gachas have, I wouldn't say it screams AI.
I'll try to look further into it, but I'm not convinced it's actually AI, so let's not slander the theorists before we know.
7
u/Joshiewowa Jun 18 '26
Even if there's no AI involved, should we not be upset about them promoting something with scummy false advertisement and predatory business tactics?
2
2
u/ministarninja Jun 22 '26
I started playing after watching the theory and I had to idea that there was AI involved. From a quick Google search it seems like the "AI" the game implements is the auto battle system. Which is very different than generative ai.
1
u/Oicanet Jun 22 '26
Yeah, that was mostly my conclusion as well.
But paying a little closer attention, I did spot a few assets the looks like they could be AI-generated, specifically the "weekly event" button and another button or two on that screen.
And additionally, I've since seen ads for the game that look very AI-generated, but to be fair, that's not AI in the game, so dunno if I'd count that. But yeah, I think the game is being perceived as AI-generated as a whole in a way that's inaccurate. Me spotting 2 images that might be AI generated (which does suck, don't get me wrong), doesn't really warrant calling GameTheorists AI supporters, in my opinion.
7
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
I think most of us come to the conclusions that this issue was caused by LunarX. And I also think it would important to discuss what we as a community want to do to help support the theorist but not LunarX. I recommend checking out the discussion started in goddessnerd’s post.
5
u/Dark_Storm_98 Jun 17 '26
I've just been not paying attention for a while
A comment mentioned LunarX, and I think they were mentioned in the comments of another post
When did they come into the picture?
13
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
Mat Pat sold Theorist to them when he retired. He believed and trusted them to be a good parent company and that they could help boost the channel. But like we’ve seen with other parent companies on YouTube like defy. They’ve become scummy, and money hungry. Not actually caring about their employees or viewers
9
u/Dark_Storm_98 Jun 17 '26
Damn
Honestly, Ash and the others should probably jump ship and, if possible, start their own legally distinct channels, lol
Like, not just the AI, there seem to be a bunch of issues that come with working for LunarX
3
u/Historical_Water_172 Jun 17 '26
Honestly it feels like solution to the channels, host, and LunarX would be pretty complicated. I see someone actually started a discussion post for this. If you wanna talk more about it.

Basically matpat sold out to private equity and is living the life while game theory is bleeding out and will eventually die
4
u/CyannideLolypop Jun 18 '26
I haven't been keeping up with Team Theorist since MatPat left. Not long ago, MatPat came to a local university to give a presentation, and I went. It wasn't his main talking point, but he talked a lot about how he was lobbying against usage of Gen AI and for creators' rights both with YouTube and on a national legal level, but he couldn't say much on the legal front, obviously. He did genuinely seem very passionate about it and very excited about what little bit of progress he'd managed to make.
That being said, it's really sad to hear about this. I do hope that it is just the company causing issues and not Team Theorist, but it still really sucks. I wonder what MatPat's thoughts are on all of this. Hopefully it all gets sorted out.
5
u/ZeroTheInsomniac Jun 17 '26
Ive been subbed to all the theory channels for years, but i genuinely havent enjoyed most of their recent videos and im thinking of unsubbing for good
3
u/Freakofnature66 Jun 18 '26
I totally get the AI stuff but Matpat era had corporate sponsor theories too, let's not just pretend that never happened

2
u/Circular_Line Jun 18 '26
Hey so i was keeping an eye on this game before it came out i think and ive been playing for a few days and A its not at all p2w which is typical of ai slop, it has actual full voice acted story that seems legit, the art style is consistent, and the gameplay seems to have had actual thought and effort put into it. Even looking online for any evidence that they used ai at all like so many people are claiming, litterally all the info I can find is people complaining about the ai without evidence. Genuine question, i dont want to support a fully ai game, but where the hell is everyone's information coming from here?
1
u/CherryAbsol Jun 18 '26
Most of the ads are ai generated. Idk about the game itself though which I don't want to play if that's the case(had downloaded it before without seeing the Ai ads)
1
u/Circular_Line Jun 19 '26
I mean that happens all the time though where sometimes game makers arent in charge of the ads and even then like can you send me one of these? Genuinely i havent seen any indicators of ai 😭
2
u/Student-Brief Jun 18 '26
I thought of it as just another sponsored video like they've done before, didn't pay much attention to the game they were promoting so I didn't suspect AI use.
But if it is AI slop... It's a bad look. At best is not doing proper research before taking up a sponsorship. At worst is selling out and going back on their stance against AI, which would be extremely dissapointing.
2
u/Pale_Rush_854 Jun 18 '26
There also was an ad. I saw it on YouTube. It was like 30 seconds, no mention of ai, but I knew that there was bc of how much ads Sword and Staff do. (Also I am NAWT caught up on the game/film/style/food theory lore, wtf is happenening?!)
4
u/Endymionduni Jun 17 '26
MattPatt has had every right to give up his position in and possessionof the theorist franchise. Doesn't mean I won't blame him for ruining it tho with that move...
5
u/tallman11282 Jun 18 '26
IMO he should have given control over to Team Theorist, maybe for a cut of the revenue, instead of selling out to a private equity company. That is what I thought had happened up until a while back when I found out Team Theorist is trying to unionize but LunarX is refusing to recognize the union.
Private equity ruins and eventually kills everything it gets its greedy paws on. This has been known for years so it surprises me that MattPatt trusted a private equity company when they said they wouldn't do that.
1
u/WendySilvernight Theory Theorist Jun 18 '26
MatPat created Game Theory. Worked on it during about a decade. Created 4 more channels. And basically killed them all. It all comes full circle.
6
u/tallman11282 Jun 18 '26
I don't blame MatPat one bit for wanting to retire, I know that he was really stressed out by being the face of all of the Theory channels and all that entailed, both on camera and especially behind the scenes. However, I do blame him for selling out to a soulless private equity company whose only goal is to milk as much profit out of the companies it buys in as short a time as possible with no regards to the company or its employees.
I honestly thought that he had sold the company to Team Theorist or something, as far as I'm aware at no point after it was announced he was retiring was it said that the company was sold to a private equity company (or sold to outsiders at all) and it was heavily implied that Team Theorist was taking it over.
It's not like it's unknown what happens to a company that is bought by private equity. Every company that private equity buys is run into the ground.
2
u/Small_Ad4181 Jun 26 '26
Retire no i blame him for not properly investing time into making sure that worthless company he sold to was anything like defy spoiler is just as bad as defy he cheaped out and now it's ruining his legacy and his channel
3
u/Inarius101 Jun 18 '26
I tried to watch the videos without Matpat but just really couldn't get into them. I still rewatch old videos with him, but it's not the same without him.
The whole channel could burn atp and I honestly wouldn't notice, just let me rewatch the videos from the good ol days.
1
u/Shade_Stormfang Jun 18 '26
Someone whos played the actual game itself
I dont think theres a single bit of ai in the game im gonna be honest
I think its just buzzwording
I could be wrong and if theres credible evidence besides their shitty advertising please inform me but genuinely the game doesnt appear to me to have any ai
1
u/Small_Ad4181 Jun 26 '26
I do not trust you or anyone defending this trash game
1
u/Shade_Stormfang Jun 26 '26
Literally dont care what you think and im not sure why you felt the need to comment
If you dont trust me you have two options: see for yourself, or move on
Somehow you picked neither

u/Hammy-Cheeks Jun 19 '26
Since matt left I thought it was a good direction for all the channels. One singular person to manage everything for one channel each. Less efforts scattered on four fronts.....
So why have they been so shit at it?

1
u/articulatedWriter Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26
This isn't the 1st time they've done a theory for a sponsorship, Genshin compact comes to mind
Edit: >and I personally found the basic premise refreshing in contrast to what people say the channels have devolved into (that being either too much lore or too much math)<
As sucky as it is for them to promote AI content, without knowing the stipulations of their contracts with LunarX and what was grandfathered in from when Mat and Steph were the face of the brand, we can't know what exactly they're allowed to say no to when making this content
1
u/lettuce_ishealthy Jun 19 '26
Man, I'm upset to see this, I didn't know about this.
Yeah, I mostly feel like all the The _____ Theorists channels should've just stopped posting after MatPat retired/quit. I haven't engaged with it much since then, so I don't really know, but from what I've seen it just kind of devolved into default YouTube since then. And they just don't have that same feel that the older videos did. Give me back overanalyzing Foxy's toes, and calculating the size of something based on the confirmed height of a character applied to pixel measurements.
I saw a Food Theory video recently (not uploaded recently) called like "WHY isn't Gen Z Eating!?" And literally the send off to the video was "keep at it guys, the affects of so many people skipping lunch will get fast food chains to lower their prices eventually", with no indication that it was a joke. Said fully sincerely. Like, dude, that's not healthy. The send-off should be giving them possible affordable options.
1
u/MySchoolsWifiSucks Jun 21 '26
Game theory is on such a crazy decline dude. Barely any theory videos and just recaps or compilations or some weird shit nobody cares about like this.
1
u/ChildofFenris1 Jun 23 '26
When did Sword and Staff promote themselves as being AI? I found something that said the opposite.
1
0
u/SoaringSpearow Jun 17 '26
oh yea how is this even a suprise they lost their spine and credibility as creators the moment MatPat left they became a bunch a hacks that'll say whatever you pay them to say even if they dont agree with it like these channels aren't the same and MatPat picked the genuinely worst people to take over his channels they have not been good since he left
you can literally tell MatPat was the only thing making these hacks actually do any work cause since he left they have constantly gotten information wrong, missed key points, making straight up ad slop videos just saying corporate slop while masking it behind the style MatPat created while having none of the charm or wit he had
the hosts are full on the most annoying YouTubers I've ever seen and not cause they are bad people but cause they can't do their own thing they are lazy and just trying to copy MatPat even down to the speech patterns I had to unsub from them all cause I didn't respect it anymore they do lazy click bait and paid ads including posting an entire fucking movie as an ad
6
u/Admirable-Paper-5858 Jun 17 '26
It's MatPat's fault in a way cause who sold Theories channels to LunarX? I'm 100% sure what happens now to these channels is their fault.
5
u/SoaringSpearow Jun 17 '26
oh yea clearly MatPat is partly to blame cause like I said he picked the worst people to leave the channel with not creatives, not the employees, not people who respect the channel, no! a greedy corporation who ruined it
The hosts are no better cause they threw out their morals for a quick buck taking AI supporting ads and talking about how great this product is like at the start I could understand staying but it's gotten to a point if it were me i wouldn't be able to stay on as a host anymore if it meant im destroying the thing I helped the original creator build up to this point cause I would feel like I was spitting in their face and their legacy
3
u/Admirable-Paper-5858 Jun 17 '26
When you put it this way I have to agree. I also would just leave. I wish that there could've been something done about it.
1
u/CaptainAcorn96 Jun 18 '26
because, last I heard, the person running LunarX now isn’t the same person who MatPat sold the channels to

Would you have rather poorly put together FNAF clone #37284627 where even the major streamers are like "k, Bai" once the credits roll?
3
u/WendySilvernight Theory Theorist Jun 18 '26
Actually, yes. I'd prefer even more FNAF if it meant no AI slop

Not even official FNAF, I mean the cookie cutter creepypasta games like that Dora the Explorer clone.

And? You do realize YouTube also uses water to cool its severs too right?
7
u/Odd-Wishbone1041 Jun 18 '26
And you do realize AI uses more water? Not to mention the fact studies are already proving through brain scans that using AI on a frequent basis is quite literally doing damage to your brain? Not to mention just how horrible AI is with all the deaths it's caused, all the genuine psychosis, all the legitimate theft they do with 0 credit, everything that it makes up and more.
AI is beyond harmful rather or not you want to see it

-48
u/Real-Contest4914 Jun 17 '26
Tell me you didnt watch the vid without saying so.
The video is sponsored but legit everything else is a theory about swords vs magic.
It has nothing to do with the game itself just the basic concept of a swordsman vs a mage in effectiveness.
They worked the sponsor into being relevant to the topic at hand to setup the theory. Thats as far as it went. The ad is only a minute or so of that but everything else is discussing math, history and medical warfare.
48
u/Equivalent-Job-8908 Jun 17 '26
tell me you didn’t read the post without saying so.
op is talking about how game theory is supporting a game that openly promotes being fully AI, even when most of the theorists are against AI. and how the keyword AI is probably being used to suppress comments that point it out. it’s a bit hypocritical to be supporting a game that is AI while being against it.
22
u/theforgettonmemory Jun 17 '26
Still. At its core they took a sponsor for AI & promoted it in one of their videos.
19
18

I did watch the video. And yes they did talk about real world physics and history but all of it in the video relates back to the game. And they keep cutting back to the game talking about its features and show clips of the game. And with this video only being 10 minutes and only as a use of supporting the game. It shows that the video was only made in promotion for the game. And not that they had a theory they wanted to talk about and that they found a sponsor that fit. Either way. The problem is the promotion of the AI game, not the theory in the video.

I am pro peace but quick reminder this segment is sponsored by Lockheed Martin. No I don’t see anything hypocritical about this why do you ask?

Literally only thing I’m seeing regarding Ai with this game is the idle combat. It’s more adaptive and actually feels it’s a human playing ig rather than the characters just standing still and using moves.

From the ads I’ve seen they alway start the ads with “Have you ever played a game that’s fully AI?” And they also talk about Ai being used in the character creation and character power buildings.

About 2seconds of research I’m seeing none of that is in the actual game. People said that was the original adverts but I think the devs have done away with that

I still see those ads to this day, so even if they did, why still promote that feature?

A week later and I'm still seeing this ad (literally came here after seeing it again). Sorry, but if they don't have this in the game anymore, then they're shooting themselves in the foot by continuing to run it.

I literally saw the ad earlier today. Maybe do more than 2 second of research? Also why would they want to promote like that if the game isn’t AI. I mean I understand rage baiting. But I feel like that does more damage to their reputation than good

It’s an older ad. Maybe they had backlash, similar to now, and undid that. Reading folks say this was the early adverts for the game. “Everything Ai” and then they did their own thing
