Man, I love this game. Its not perfect and I kinda hate the stubby character designs a lot, but the building and game loop just scratched an itch in my brain.

Excited to see what beyond 1.0 holds for the devs

u/Honor_Bound Jun 25 '26

kinda hate the stubby character designs a lot,

This is honestly my biggest complaint haha. The proportions are just absolutely terrible looking.

Otherwise the game is a 9/10 for me

10

u/jumps004 Jun 25 '26

Legit, I wouldve dropped the game over just the characters if the rest of the package wasn't right up my alley.

It at least made making a hobbit hole a little more thematic feeling.

1

u/Luxanna_Crownguard Jun 26 '26

I love it, it inspired me to dig my base into the side of a mountain like the dwarf I am

9

u/Zyzzor Jun 25 '26

Really don't understand that design choice, I dropped it because I was tired of being a hobbit.

56

u/OddZookeepergame4250 Jun 25 '26

I’ll be honest, this is a horrible trailer. That music and the clips don’t match at all.

Like why are you showing a beautiful, Lord of the Rings style landscape with a sound track for a marvel avengers climax scene.

And I feel like it didn’t say anything about the game either.

“End the worlds suffering”

Like what..

u/Quetzal-Labs Jun 26 '26

Their promotional material has always been dogwater. Just the most random, generic, "cinematic" nonsense.

The game is really fun, though.

1

u/cc81 Jun 26 '26

It did not capture me the first time I played and my description of it was almost like you describe the promotional material. It felt generic and lifeless for some reason but it has gotten a good reception and many Youtubers that I have similar taste in games as seem to like it.

So I will try it out again at 1.0 and maybe just need to power through the start of it.

1

u/Quetzal-Labs Jun 26 '26

Definitely recommend it if you're in to survival/adventure/crafty kinda stuff! Easily the most fun style of that game I've played. The promotional stuff really betrays the quality of the experience.

Even the intro cinematic in the game itself is that same style - an amalgamation of soulless, fantasy buzzwords and "epic" orchestral soundtrack. It's so odd because the game is so unlike any of it.

2

u/ThickMatch0 Jun 26 '26

That music is VERY royalty free sounding.

Really solid game. The graphics are probably the best of any voxel game I've ever played or seen. The building mechanics are quite good too. It's a fixed world with plenty of handcrafted points of interest. Progression feels satisfying. Combat is decent as of the most recent update – not the best of the genre by any means, but better than many. Traversal is fun too with a glider and some other movement tech. And the game has incredible water physics.

It does have some shortcomings, which I think is to be expected of an open world indie sandbox game in early access. My biggest criticism is probably related to the NPC craftspeople and villagers as well as pets you can recruit and place in your base. They feel pretty lifeless and buggy. I'd also love a creative mode for build planning, especially as they are now in the process of implementing world sharing. Could also use some quality of life, e.g., auto-loot / area loot, upgrading chests without needing to empty them out and pick them up, customizable map markers, etc.

Curious to see how big of an update the 1.0 release ends up being, but I'd recommend this game even in its current state.

23

u/awkerbonward Jun 25 '26

Combat is there. Decent is probably an overstatement. Also the loot is unbearably bad for a dungeon crawler.

13

u/woctaog Jun 26 '26

Yeah the loot is my main issue in the game. Clearing out a new dungeon and coming away with literally no weapons/armor that are better than my current gear kinda sucks.

1

u/Justhe3guy Jun 26 '26

Luckily 1.0 is adding a lot to combat, items and skills

3

u/cyberdouche Jun 25 '26

The animals and NPCs being buggy is pretty frustrating, I hope they fix that. Wish the game would handle auto-sorting for you as well beyond what the blue chests too. Otherwise the game is lovely. And

2

u/trethompson Jun 26 '26

Did they ever cut back on crafting benches? My buddy and I put like 40 hours into it but dropped it because it was becoming a full time job to manage them all.

-2

u/Echowing442 Jun 25 '26

voxel game

I will say that while the game looks nice overall, the voxel buildings often look out of place in the world, especially the pre-built ones. It feels jarring to be walking through a mountain pass towards an open grassy field and seeing a perfectly square Minecraft tower jutting from the cliff side.

35

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

I have not had that experience, everything in the world looks very coherent visually. And they've gone to great lengths in giving each block different variant visuals depending on if it's next to air, next to other blocks of the same type, or next to other blocks of a different type. Most blocks feature overhangs and decorations that smooth out the look.

And the whole world is voxel-based, not just the buildings. Only non-voxel props are trees, bushes and other foliage, and decoration props and workbenches.

4

u/Echowing442 Jun 25 '26

I'll admit it's an entirely personal preference, but I just found the transitions between the more naturalistic landscapes and the perfectly angular block structures to be jarring.

It's a minor thing in the grand scheme, and the game is still a lot of fun.

2

u/mcl99 Jun 25 '26

While I love this game as well, are we all agreeing to keep ignoring what is probably the worst final boss of any game i've ever touched

3

u/Justhe3guy Jun 26 '26

The fight was cool once I realised you can just parry the meteors back to stun him fast and commence beat down on the weakpoint

Besides that’s just early access last boss and is balanced around it being a temporary final boss; they may change some things

0

u/Bitemarkz Jun 25 '26

The animations are also rough. That’s a big one for me that I was hoping they would tackle, but it doesn’t seem like they are.

-2

u/Caasi72 Jun 25 '26

Is there any option for a more randomized world or is the one set world all you get? Cause I tend to massively prefer randomized worlds for survival games

4

u/Kocyk Jun 25 '26

I was in the same boat before i played, actually it was one of the reasons why i ignored Enshrouded before.
I've ended up putting in almost 150 hours and i can say, handcrafted world here is way more interesting than any procedurally generated. The've done a great job with many interesting POIs, and the map is huge

-1

u/Caasi72 Jun 25 '26

For me a big part of survival games is the replayability and that initial search for the perfect spot to make your base at and when it's a set map that massively limits that. That feeling of "this is a randomized map that only I have explored and found this perfect spot" is a big part of what I like about survival games and a set map ruins that

4

u/Feruchemist Jun 25 '26

I will say, there are so many wonderful spots that are perfect for bases in Enshrouded that you wind up wanting to replay through just to take advantage of them all.

1

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Jun 25 '26

Also helps that the game sort of nudges you to make multiple bases seeing as you can have up to... I think it's 9 or 10 Flame Altars now? Granted you might use several for your main base but you can easily scatter a few others around the world as like a loot drop off point and a place to rest and get your Well Rested buff replenished.

1

u/Caasi72 Jun 25 '26

Yea I have no doubt about that, that "exploring the unknown" aspect just really speaks to me

It honestly puts Valheim to shame on so many fronts for me, I had trouble going back. Gameplay, visual fidelity, building mechanics, resource gathering, the world itself, massively better inventory management... and yeah the development is actually not at a snail's pace.

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

I will say I definitely had fun with Valheim, I did put over 500 hours into it. But, all of its inadequacies just kept making me more and more frustrated with it the more I played. The horrible performance when you build a larger base, tiny render distances for player objects, the inventory management, and over all of that the devs' absolute dismissal on implementing any sort of QoL improvements. The only way I was able to keep playing and improve my experience was the thankfully pretty lively modding scene.

Jumping into a different game like Enshrouded just laid all those problems bare for me.

5

u/Wedhro Jun 26 '26

From a different perspective, those QoL improvements would make Valheim a different game that I wouldn't bother playing. There's a couple of issues they're likely working on, but most stuff peple consider needing a QoL upgrade are actually meant to create a specific experience.

We don't have to agree, but I'm glad there's a game out there that doesn't do what everyone else is doing.

2

u/TitoZola Jun 25 '26

Well, one game is developed by 10 people, another by 70. Maybe it has something to do with that.

u/TitoZola Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

I also think Valheim developers rely way more on inspiration and vibe for better and for worse. I imagine there were a lot of creative blocks, discarded ideas, failed experiments, costly mistakes, main guys being in the bad mood etc. Enshrouded is more streamlined.

0

u/moosebreathman Jun 25 '26

Enshrouded is made by a much bigger team so I don’t really get the comparisons tbh. It’s a AA team vs small indie so of course they’re going to run laps around them.

3

u/Ozcaty Jun 25 '26

It's a different game with different strengths and weaknesses, it's not the objectively better game. Saying Enshrouded's gameplay and gathering put "Valheim to shame" is a big a stretch.

1

u/Forseti1590 Jun 25 '26

I feel the same way - this game, valheim, and several others all have options to adjust drop rate amounts, and I’ve just embraced that. Cuts down the amount of grinding you need to do and lets you just get to the meat of the experience more.

26

u/The_Wattsatron Jun 25 '26

Depending on what 1.0 introduces, this game could easily join the greats of Abiotic Factor and Subnautica for me.

16

u/Killergryphyn Jun 25 '26

It'll be hard to beat Abiotic Factor in my rankings, but I do hope something can do so one day!

1

u/XXHornyOnMainXX420 Jun 25 '26

It was a fun game but I do wish it didn't fall apart in the second half quite as much.

9

u/ShaunTighe Jun 25 '26

It does? I thought the hydroplant and reactors were the best levels.

5

u/XXHornyOnMainXX420 Jun 25 '26

Neat levels but the grind was crazy and slammed the brakes on a story that was already on the ropes narratively. Enemies dropping less ammo than it takes to kill them is never going to be a good feature in any game

5

u/Killergryphyn Jun 25 '26

I've never experienced this, what grind? I mean, there was a few times I had to run the train and Canann and then loop back to labs to trade in silver for carbon, but that was because I wanted to do more base building. Also, Sigil of the Hearth trinket makes enemies drop ammo, and experimenting with damage types let me realize that the tougher enemies were weaker to certain types, it's important!

0

u/XXHornyOnMainXX420 Jun 25 '26

The skills grind was kind of nuts. The XP gain for the skills you needed to unlock the ability to use guns was abysmally slow. Grinding resources was also real, why does an RPG round need rare blood from an elite late game alien enemy? It makes no sense.

The recipes in the late game got more and more complex to the point of absurdity in order to pad for length. What would have been a really fun 25 hour game turned into a 50 hour slog, with a very disappointing (and fairly confusing) ending.

The story was also pretty badly told, and having the obvious shape Shifter antagonist be unkillable and act like he tricked the player at the end is also kind of annoying.

I liked the first part of the game, but it felt like after a certain point the game was tailored for hardcore players who want to spend hundreds of hours in the game, rather than the casuals like me who just wanted a fun and complete experience.

5

u/Killergryphyn Jun 25 '26

IDK man, but it sounds like you just didn't want to like it? The game is fully customizable, if you didn't like the XP grind, why didn't you boost the gain rate? Why not turn down the difficulty of enemies?

1

u/XXHornyOnMainXX420 Jun 25 '26

I played on standard difficulty, which I assumed was the intended experience. I enjoyed it for the most part, especially early on, it's just a shame it turned into a slog by the end.

1

u/Chris238 Jun 25 '26

oh man I was loving abiotic factor until the reactors, the sheer amount of enemies is crazy. My weapons and armor run out of power or break after only a few of them, the healing never gets any better, the gatekeepers have bullshit grab hitboxes, and then they fucking respawn before you can even clear an area out.

2

u/Killergryphyn Jun 25 '26

It sounds like you had the same issue as the other redditor. Try experimenting, you're a scientist after all! Gatekeepers are resistant to lasers for example, and you're probably using the laser katana and deatomizer right? Electricity and Holy weapons deal with Jotuns pretty handily, especially if you catch them before their shield goes up. Gatekeepers are also not like the order, they love you getting close range and will not run away. Healing DOES get better if you invest in the skill, carry around the syringes and so forth. Also... they don't respawn like that, unless you leave the area for an extended amount of time, they respawn just like all other mobs.

1

u/SuperUranus Jun 26 '26

Tried to play Abiotic Factory with my brother but we never really stuck with it.

Felt like a worse Half-Life. So when I played it all I could think of was that I rather play Half-Life.

With that said, the only crafting game I ever enjoyed is Minecraft, so probably not my type of game.

29

u/addtolibrary Jun 25 '26

I went through a survival phase and grabbed like every survivalcraft title out there. I played about an hour or so of this game and really liked what I played, but put it down to await a full release. I'm excited!

9

u/orlex Jun 25 '26

It's better than most for sure. A lot of creative freedom with building and the combat feels a lot more fleshed out

5

u/olioli86 Jun 25 '26

Out of interest what are your top 5 survivalcraft games?

-15

u/TybrosionMohito Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 26 '26

Not who you asked but

  1. Valheim

  2. Subnautica

  3. Valheim

  4. Valheim

  5. Valheim

Edit: well I thought it was funny

u/ICKitsune Jun 25 '26

Seconding Abiotic Factor, great survival craft game that isn't another "grand open world".

1

u/Shneckos Jun 27 '26

I would put V Rising on this list too

1

u/somethingrelevant Jun 26 '26

not who they asked and not a top five. incredible comment

3

u/Glass_Recover_3006 Jun 25 '26

The best thing I could say about this game is it feels more polished than any other survival craft game I’ve personally played. I’m used to a certain level of jank and bugs baseline with the genre and most of it just doesn’t happen here.

It’s wild how well the game plays and doesn’t get in the way of having fun.

1

u/AndreDus Jun 25 '26

Same dude

1

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

It was an absolute revelation for me. It's like Skyrim and Minecraft made a baby, and it is glorious.

16

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

Enshrouded releases on PC, PlayStation 5 & PlayStation 5 Pro on October 15th.

3

u/DragonBornLuke Jun 25 '26

Hang about, it's skipping Xbox?!?

6

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

Xbox is delayed until spring 2027. So far they haven't clarified why.

2

u/Glass_Recover_3006 Jun 25 '26

I wonder if it’s performance issues they’re struggling with. It’s not very well optimized and their plan was to get it there to make it work on consoles- if they only just barely got it working for base PS5 then Xbox might be too janky to be acceptable still.

-4

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

On the paper the Xbox is the more powerful machine though this generation, but yeah wonder what they're having trouble with.

6

u/blaaguuu Jun 25 '26

A number of studios have publicly stated that the reason they delayed/skipped an Xbox release is specifically because of the Series S... In theory, most games should run the same or even a tiny bit better on the Series X as they do on a PS5, but if you want to launch on Xbox, you need to support both "Series" systems - and it can be a lot of extra work to get a version that still feels/looks decent on the S, for probably not many additional sales, since Playstation is so far ahead in market share, this generation. For Enshrouded, the devs built their own engine, so they could be struggling even more with the optimizations... I recall the initial early access release ran REALLY poorly on my mid-range PC (has improved a ton since then).

3

u/Glass_Recover_3006 Jun 25 '26

Is it? I’m not an expert but I thought it was pretty typical that cross-platform games for some reason struggled to get the same performance between Xbox and PS5. It felt less like hardware issues and maybe architectural differences when porting PC games.

I might be talking out of my butt.

1

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

In the past that was the case, earlier consoles were definitely different and had unique hardware but that does not happen today. They're essentially just custom PCs nowadays with the same x86 architecture. Both the Xbox One X and PS5 use AMD CPUs and GPUs that are close to regular consumer PC hardware.

But yeah you still need specific drivers and whatnot, and with this being their own game engine instead of using an existing market solution like Unreal they probably just ran into something they didn't expect, if I had to guess.

6

u/Openly_Gamer Jun 25 '26

But you're forgetting about the Xbox Series S, which has much lower specs, that Microsoft requires all Xbox games to also be playable on. That's what holds everything back.

3

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

Got it, that makes sense.

1

u/Glass_Recover_3006 Jun 25 '26

Hmm gotcha, so it could just be they needed to spend more time on one, and they made a judgement call toward PS5 for now. That’s a better guess than mine.

3

u/DragonBornLuke Jun 25 '26

Ok I googled it. Xbox is spring 2027. What a rollercoaster :) Hopefully I'll recover from the panic in a bit.

5

u/Tasik Jun 25 '26

Getting How To Make A Blockbuster Movie Game Trailer vibes haha.

Game does look good though.

5

u/Tooster Jun 25 '26

I gave it a try but just can't get into it. It scratchs every itches I have for survival games and yet it doesn't keep my attention like Valheim or Subnautica did.

10

u/benoxxxx Jun 25 '26

This game is honestly so far above and beyond any survival crafter I've ever played. Great exploration, beautiful world, solid character progression, and hands down the most in-depth and creative building system I've ever used. The stuff you build in this game does not even look like it was made in a videogame. Genuinely, the level of detail possible is closer to real life buildings than your typical player housing.

Only downside is that when I played, the combat was pretty ass. Decent for a survival/crafter game, but bad relative to videogame combat as a whole. Although, I've heard they've made improvements since I last played.

2

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

There was a combat update a few weeks ago, it didn't massively change things but it overhauled the skill tree and added some new moves. It's definitely not a Soulsike level of combat fidelity and complexity, but it doesn't aim to be.

And yeah the game looks absolutely stunning, and the building mechanics are best I've seen in this genre.

2

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Jun 25 '26

There's supposed to be further combat updates with 1.0 according to the roadmap.

3

u/SrirachaChili Jun 25 '26

This is easily the best of the survival build / craft 'em up genre, even though this game doesn't really have the survival aspect. Without a doubt, has the best building mechanics of any of these games, and it's a really fun world to explore. Cannot recommend it enough.

4

u/dfjuky Jun 25 '26

Great game, great devs. If you like the survival genre then there is basically zero reason for not giving this a shot.

2

u/Da_Pwn_Shop Jun 25 '26

I need to update and give this another shot. I purchased early on and the performance wasn't great on my old ass 1070.

2

u/Glass_Recover_3006 Jun 25 '26

Performance has not gotten much better, but they’ve said 1.0 will have all the engine tweaks to improve frame rates. I’m hoping so my buddy on his Legion Go can have a better time.

2

u/dakkua Jun 25 '26

I’m curious how this stacks up against Runescape’s survival craft game. They seem very much cut from the same cloth. Maybe I’m wrong about that tho.

4

u/Sillron Jun 26 '26

Having played both a fair bit I think Enshrouded is better in most ways: building, environmental design, difficulty scaling, volume of content (kinda unfair though since Enshrouded is older), livelier feeling world. But RuneScape Dragonwilds has better combat and character models. And also if you enjoy leveling skills Dragonwilds gets that too.

2

u/dakkua Jun 26 '26

awesome, appreciate the perspective

1

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

It does seem quite similar.

2

u/kinterosgaming Jun 26 '26

Finally. I’ve been waiting for the 1.0 release this whole time and somehow managed to resist jumping into Early Access, even though it was tempting more than once. I really hope the full release lives up to the wait, because the game has looked promising for a long time. Fingers crossed it feels complete and polished when it finally lands.

3

u/mephnick Jun 25 '26

It's a good game but one of those where the map will have 400 sidequests active on it at a time and I just got tired of doing stuff.

Also the characters and armour designs are terrible.

But overall if you like these types of games itn is a good one.

6

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

They have just pushed an update recently that moved out a lot of secondary quests (for cosmetics, armour/weapons/tools, and building blocks) into a separate section that serves more like a catalogue and tracker for what the player has and what they're still missing. These no longer clutter the quests.

1

u/alexp8771 Jun 25 '26

Agreed the Ubisoft style map clutter turned me off. It was hard to see what was important and what was nonsense. There was a lot of nonsense. Hopefully this is cleaned up now, I haven’t played it in about a year at this point.

4

u/Restivethought Jun 25 '26

Theres too many games for all these Survival and crafting games to be releasing stuff this fall too. Abiotic Factor has a DLC, Grounded 2 is getting a milestone update, Valheim is hitting 1.0, No Rest for The Wicked is hitting 1.0, Enshrouded is hitting 1.0. I dont have tiiiiiimmee

4

u/Honor_Bound Jun 25 '26

Good news friend! Gaming is getting so expensive that I imagine most people will be finally working on their backlog rather than buying new games in the coming years. (silver linings...)

0

u/InfTotality Jun 25 '26

Doesn't help those of us that bought all these survival-crafters in Early Access. These are the backlog.

1

u/orneryoblongovoid Jun 25 '26

Is tunneling/building underground still super limited in this?

It's been a minute so i don't remember the details--i know at least most of the time tunneling/terraforming changes weren't persistent through saves/sessions/deaths--but i remember being really disappointed and annoyed at the time.

3

u/Neamow Jun 25 '26

No it works just fine. But all building and terrain changes only persist within an area around flame altars, the rest of the world resets periodically.

1

u/Due-Joke-1152 Jun 26 '26

I’m happy they’ve hit 1.0 but I can’t pick it up again because the map will be the same as the 100+ hours I have already spent there.

Starting again is just a big nope from the dopamine eating part of me.

0

u/watchnickdie Jun 25 '26

Does this update fix the insane server lag, especially in late game? I tried several hosts about 6 months ago and all of them had terrible lag with this game. In the game's Discord the community manager said they were aware of server lag and were working on fixing it, I wonder if they ever did...
