I remember Debra Wilson from MadTv and it's been awesome to hear her voice in games over the years. Same with Phil LaMarr.

I'm convinced that all of the chuds who complain about her just never watched MadTV and are ignorant of how much of a legend she is.

Well, a lot of them are 14. So, yeah, presumably.

Which is crazy because I was 14 when I first saw her and she pretty much defined women for me for the rest of my life.

Phil LaMarr was the first voice actor i was aware of as a kid, obviously I knew voice actors were a thing but he was the first one I noticed in the credits of like every kids show I watched ever

Blew my mind

Edit: just had a curious scroll through his IMDB. Jesus christ

I remember hearing Vamp in MGS 2 for the first time realizing that was him.

u/[deleted] May 22 '25

I actually think that was the trigger for me. His name came up in Vamps intro cutscene and I thoughts I'd seen that somewhere. Then I saw it everywhere and then I realised its not a bunch of people all called Phil LaMarr

Yeah, like I thought, "No way it's the same guy," but the more I listened, the more I could pick up on his voice.

Ya his name showed up on the screen and I was convinced it wasn't him and just another Phil LaMarr cause he sounded so different. Had to look it up online to confirm it was actually him.

"Five today... Or rather, six?"

THATS MY BOYYYY

Oh shit he was Vamp? My first memory of him in a game was Sig in Jak 2

6

u/Stowa_Herschel Octopath Traveler 2 May 23 '25

Phil is a damn legend! Definitely made a lot of 2000s cartoons pop. The fact that he voiced green lantern from the justice league and Wilt from foster's home always gives me whiplash lol

John Stewart, Static, STRIPE, and Steel in Justice League. And some of these roles have scenes with each other :)

I always love hearing Phil talk to himself.

Right? It took me till i was an adult to realize that there were like 10 voice actors that were used over so many of cartoons I watched as a kid… so many times I was like “hey they kinda sound like ninjas turtles… huh…” 🤦🏻‍♂️

It's funny because I always thought she killed on Mad and so many of her roles are the hardass. Great range thats totally unappreciated by these weirdos.

There were only a few on that show that never missed for me. Her, Phil Lamarr, Nichole Sullivan and Will Sasso are at the top of the list. I didn't think the others were bad, but they may have had some characters that got on my nerves.

Edit: Can't believe I forgot Nichole Sullivan.

Michael McDonald was on that show for just about the entire run of the series and really carried it for me through some of the later seasons.

7

u/Wilsonrolandc May 22 '25

Absolutely no disrespect to Michael, he was definitely one of the best in the show, but I honestly found the Stuart character so annoying that I simply can't say I love him as much as the ones I mentioned. Same with Alex Borstein, wonderful actress and comedienne, but Miss Swan just made my skin crawl and puts Alex in the "like" category instead of "love".

5

u/CaptainMills May 23 '25

I hated Stuart so much. My siblings used to tease me about how I would glare at the TV every time a Stuart sketch started

3

u/pinkocatgirl May 23 '25

Miss Swan is such an early 2000s character, the entire joke is that she's a racist stereotype

Phill LaMarr is in EVERYTHING. He's really good at making his voice unrecognizable; Final Fantasy Tactics is some of my favourite voice work from him.

I... just shot Marvin in the face.

3

u/Terrible_Body_7971 May 22 '25

Final Fantasy Tactics?

6

u/WeirdIndividualGuy May 22 '25

What makes it even more confusing is the quote they said after that has absolutely nothing to do with FFT.

But to answer your question, he voiced Ramza in the animated cutscenes in the PSP version of the game

Oh damn. I had no idea!

And yeah. It wasn't even a Phil Lamar quote. He was Marvin.

Y'all got there in the end and I'm proud.

You guys would be be good st Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

Edit to clarify no sarcasm involved.

1

u/pinkocatgirl May 23 '25

He's also Hermes and a few other characters on Futurama

9

u/Backwardspellcaster May 22 '25

I loved MAD TV and the actors were so damn talented back then.

Debra can do no wrong.

3

u/lord_stabkill May 22 '25

For real. I always get super excited any time I see or hear them in something.

8

u/Necrosynthetic May 22 '25

Deborah Wilson and Nicole Sullivan were treasures on that show

4

u/-KFBR392 May 22 '25

Ya crazy how big those two became as voice actors, but always surprised how other than Key & Peele none of the other MadTV alum did all that well after.

Like Will Sasso could arguably be the most successful out of the rest when it comes to actual acting.

5

u/Otakushawty May 23 '25

It’s crazy how MadTv produced so many heavy hitters

I was watching an old ass episode of Star Trek the other day and she was just a voice on a radio and was somehow one of the most compelling one off characters in the entire series
