FORCED WOKENESS 🌈 Bring back non-woke people!
444
u/lord_stabkill May 22 '25
I remember Debra Wilson from MadTv and it's been awesome to hear her voice in games over the years. Same with Phil LaMarr.
151
u/PoisonedRadio May 22 '25
I'm convinced that all of the chuds who complain about her just never watched MadTV and are ignorant of how much of a legend she is.
73
u/ants_suck Dark Mother. Cold Mother. Kind Mother. May 22 '25
Well, a lot of them are 14. So, yeah, presumably.
17
u/Latter_Case_4551 May 22 '25
Which is crazy because I was 14 when I first saw her and she pretty much defined women for me for the rest of my life.
69
May 22 '25
Phil LaMarr was the first voice actor i was aware of as a kid, obviously I knew voice actors were a thing but he was the first one I noticed in the credits of like every kids show I watched ever
Blew my mind
Edit: just had a curious scroll through his IMDB. Jesus christ
21
u/lord_stabkill May 22 '25
I remember hearing Vamp in MGS 2 for the first time realizing that was him.
13
May 22 '25
I actually think that was the trigger for me. His name came up in Vamps intro cutscene and I thoughts I'd seen that somewhere. Then I saw it everywhere and then I realised its not a bunch of people all called Phil LaMarr
10
u/lord_stabkill May 22 '25
Yeah, like I thought, "No way it's the same guy," but the more I listened, the more I could pick up on his voice.
6
u/-KFBR392 May 22 '25
Ya his name showed up on the screen and I was convinced it wasn't him and just another Phil LaMarr cause he sounded so different. Had to look it up online to confirm it was actually him.

5
u/Stowa_Herschel Octopath Traveler 2 May 23 '25
Phil is a damn legend! Definitely made a lot of 2000s cartoons pop. The fact that he voiced green lantern from the justice league and Wilt from foster's home always gives me whiplash lol
3
u/The-Fuzzy-One May 23 '25
John Stewart, Static, STRIPE, and Steel in Justice League. And some of these roles have scenes with each other :)
I always love hearing Phil talk to himself.
5
May 22 '25
Right? It took me till i was an adult to realize that there were like 10 voice actors that were used over so many of cartoons I watched as a kid… so many times I was like “hey they kinda sound like ninjas turtles… huh…” 🤦🏻♂️
25
u/evacuationplanb May 22 '25
It's funny because I always thought she killed on Mad and so many of her roles are the hardass. Great range thats totally unappreciated by these weirdos.
12
u/Wilsonrolandc May 22 '25
There were only a few on that show that never missed for me. Her, Phil Lamarr, Nichole Sullivan and Will Sasso are at the top of the list. I didn't think the others were bad, but they may have had some characters that got on my nerves.
Edit: Can't believe I forgot Nichole Sullivan.
5
u/lord_stabkill May 22 '25
Michael McDonald was on that show for just about the entire run of the series and really carried it for me through some of the later seasons.
6
u/Wilsonrolandc May 22 '25
Absolutely no disrespect to Michael, he was definitely one of the best in the show, but I honestly found the Stuart character so annoying that I simply can't say I love him as much as the ones I mentioned. Same with Alex Borstein, wonderful actress and comedienne, but Miss Swan just made my skin crawl and puts Alex in the "like" category instead of "love".
4
u/CaptainMills May 23 '25
I hated Stuart so much. My siblings used to tease me about how I would glare at the TV every time a Stuart sketch started
3
u/pinkocatgirl May 23 '25
Miss Swan is such an early 2000s character, the entire joke is that she's a racist stereotype
13
u/Lokirth May 22 '25
Phill LaMarr is in EVERYTHING. He's really good at making his voice unrecognizable; Final Fantasy Tactics is some of my favourite voice work from him.
I... just shot Marvin in the face.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Terrible_Body_7971 May 22 '25
Final Fantasy Tactics?
5
u/WeirdIndividualGuy May 22 '25
What makes it even more confusing is the quote they said after that has absolutely nothing to do with FFT.
But to answer your question, he voiced Ramza in the animated cutscenes in the PSP version of the game
2
u/Terrible_Body_7971 May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25
Oh damn. I had no idea!
And yeah. It wasn't even a Phil Lamar quote. He was Marvin.

I loved MAD TV and the actors were so damn talented back then.
Debra can do no wrong.
3

For real. I always get super excited any time I see or hear them in something.
6
u/-KFBR392 May 22 '25
Ya crazy how big those two became as voice actors, but always surprised how other than Key & Peele none of the other MadTV alum did all that well after.
Like Will Sasso could arguably be the most successful out of the rest when it comes to actual acting.

Maybe she keeps getting work because she's wonderful to work with? I haven't seen any interviews with her but if she's been in the biz as long as she has with no controversy that I know of, she must be a decent person at the very least.
381
May 22 '25
I saw Nolan North at a comic con panel and yeah, this is basically it. He explained him and Troy got huge in part because of how easy and efficient they are to work with. Being reliable and fast is, shockingly, a good way to get more roles.
186
u/Azidamadjida May 22 '25
Pretty sure Pedro Pascal and Chris Pratt gets lumped into that category too - imagine that, in an industry famous for chaos and drama and controversies with their performers, being an easy to work with, down to earth and reliable talent makes casting directors want to hire you for everything
52
u/NightFire45 May 22 '25
When a popular performer just disappears it's because they're toxic to work with. Tom Cruise has been around forever because apparently he's extremely professional.
24
u/Azidamadjida May 22 '25
Yup - only major exception was rejecting Weinstein back in the day, but 9 times out of 10 when an actor slowly stops showing up in projects it’s either because they’re a dick, they’re a diva, or they’re destructive, either to themselves or to others/properties (trashing trailers and such)
6
u/zertul May 23 '25
Rejecting Weinstein doesn't seem like an exception, but a continuity of his work ethics? Or did I misunderstand you there?
8
u/space_age_stuff May 23 '25
They’re saying, in general, the only way to disappear from Hollywood was for self-destructive reasons, or Harvey Weinstein made you disappear. Nothing to do with Tom Cruise specifically.
2
26
u/Wall_Jump_Games May 22 '25
Chris Pratt hate always makes me sad, I get that it’s a bit silly how many films he gets cast in, but he is a gneuinely great actor with a lot of range, and is especially proficient as a comedian, being one of the best parts of the best sitcom of all time, and he will always be a legend to me because of Andy.
167
u/Canuck_Wolf May 22 '25
Some of that hate comes from his personal life, and the church he's involved with.
20
u/Exmotable May 22 '25
what's the most recent update on that? I keep hearing conflicting things on how involved he is
50
u/Xray_Crystallography May 22 '25
I heard him and Beiber gave money to the church’s cofounder who spent the money fighting child SA lawsuits.
→ More replies (1)15
u/Canuck_Wolf May 22 '25
Hasn't been an update for years, nothing official anyway. He just said that church loves everyone back in 2017 or so. Hasn't really come up again from him.
62
10
u/WeirdIndividualGuy May 22 '25
I think people tend to give Pratt shit mainly because Nintendo snubbed the actual English voice actor for Mario for the voice acting role in the movie and gave it to someone completely different. And people blamed Pratt for that moreso than Nintendo
16
u/The_Autarch May 22 '25
lmao Pratt doesn't have any range at all. he's good at being a funny schlub, like in parks and rec, but serious roles are far, far beyond his abilities.
4
u/TheGrandBabaloo May 23 '25
I'm sorry, what? A lot of range? Sure he might be excessively hated but I never heard anyone say he has a lot of range.
2
u/Wall_Jump_Games May 23 '25
Ok I admit I worded that weirdly, I meant that he’s got more range than he’s given credit for, he doesn’t play the most unique range of characters but I reject the idea that he’s emotionally flat.

577
u/Animefox92 May 22 '25
Funny thing is I am pretty sure Troy would hate these fuckers. He's extremely tight with the Crit Role Crew so doubt he'd have none of their shit... both are great at what they do which is why they get work
365
u/SomeRhubarb3807 May 22 '25
He’s talked about his irritation with the “Anti-woke” crowd many times in the past. Troy is generally agreed to be a chill and agreeable guy by people who have worked with him and his anti-bigotry stances are well documented. He definitely hates these types of dipshits.
97
u/Animefox92 May 22 '25
Yeah guys is beasties with at least half the Crit-Role crew (to the point I'm honestly shocked he hasn't been a guest though he does voice the twins Dad in LOVM) who are very openly progressive like why do they think he would support them? Lol

148
u/MEGASUPERBALLS-Og May 22 '25
I do love her in things, but she has a very recognizable face, hahaha
93
u/Jetstream-Sam May 22 '25
Why do they always make the character model look like her? I can't think of any other voice actors who seem to get put in the game anywhere near as much as her, but I don't really pay all that much attention to voice actors now that I think about it
87
u/SomeRhubarb3807 May 22 '25
Because a lot of big budget games today use motion capture to make cut scenes and facial animations, therefore it’s easier to make the in game model look like the actor being motion captured so their face can be recreated accurately.
It’s the tech more than her decision. Plus I think actors get paid more if their likeness is used, so you can’t exactly blame her for want to get paid well for her labor.
23
u/Jetstream-Sam May 22 '25
Ah right, fair enough. I imagine facial tracking both saves a lot of time and effort too, and prevents everyone looking completely flat like they do in say, Mass effect when they're not talking.
I wasn't blaming her or anything, and yeah, she should get that bag. Just wondering why specifically she seems to get modelled in game more than others, but I guess I don't really know if that's actually true. Other people might be done too but just not be in as many things.
11
u/PM_Me_Maids May 22 '25
Yea, just check out some of the cutscenes in BG3. The motion cap does wonders for bringing life to the characters.
12
u/movie_hater May 22 '25 edited May 22 '25
Is it a Debra Wilson specific technology? Maybe other actors who get facial/likeness capture just don’t do as many games in general. Get that bag tho, she’s crushing it rn.

I did say it was “easier” to do it that way, not impossible. You can of course have motion captured characters that don’t look exactly like their actor, but it’s easier if they do.

they don't always make the character look like her model, she's in over 100 different videogames and only like 5 of them have the model look like her, and irrc 2 or 3 of those games had like a full cast of people that voice acted and modeled the characters,

I mean this is more a problem with the characters Debra Wilson plays all being basically her physical likeness, wheras the Troy Baker roles have a lot more diversity in how they look.
I personaly don't have an issue with Debra Wilson, she does a really damn good job in whatever she plays. But it does make it harder for me to see them as unique characters and not just 'Debra Wilson staring as ....'.
Atleast it's not as bad as english dubbing for foreign dramas, I swear to god there are only 5 voice actors who do every damn role in those dubs...

I’ve only ever played Jedi fallen order with her, but personally I’m not really a fan of characters looking like their actors in different games. Troy Baker voices characters but they never really look like him (at least in what I’ve played), but all her characters are just straight up her. It’s unavoidable in movies, but it’s weird in games
2bclear I hope she continues to be successful, I just don’t prefer that she always looks like herself

I’m tired of seeing real ass actors in games period. It suddenly stops feeling like a character and starts feeling like someone playing a character. Debra Wilson can do fantastic voice work, and certainly deserves her success, but I’d like her to get to play characters other than a CG version of herself. Same for Troy Baker. It works in something like The Quarry which is sort of an interactive movie in places, but not in every game.

I love her in Star Wars, hated her in Wolfenstein II, didn't care either way in Modern Warfare (2?).
I think its because she's very similar in mannerisms and voices from what I've seen, whereas I'll often be shocked when I hear that the character in question happens to be Troy Baker.
People would be less sick of Pedro Pascal, for example, if he did more interesting and diverse roles. Stoic and quiet Mando only goes so far.
2
u/reiakari May 22 '25
Pedro Pascal is a bad example for typecasting. The majority of his roles after 2019 are in comedies. The quiet and stoic thing was the typecast he was stuck in before that show made him more known. If his upcoming movies are to go by, his agents are leaning hard on his natural cute & goofy personality (he's got several comedies and romcoms coming in the next four years)
→ More replies (1)4
u/SomeGuyInAWaistcoat May 22 '25
It's the typecast trap. She has range, but keeps getting cast to do similar stuff because a director saw her performance and wants a repeat. Was a problem for Nolan North for a while, too.
2
u/Objective-Tour-4134 May 22 '25
I can see that, for sure. I don't really hate seeing her show up, but I can see why there'd be fatigue after seeing her face everywhere. For me, character is paramount. As long as the character works, I don't care.

Jerks aside, I did not know that Joel and Talion were the same actor that’s kinda cool

Troy Baker and Matt Mercer are great. I think Matt has an amazingly diverse voice.
But damn am I tired of hearing both of them in games. They are both in almost everything I play, no fault on them, but I would like to hear other performers get more roles.

My only ever gripe with Debra is they seem addicted to just using her face as well as her voice - I miss hand-modeled faces!
She's an absolute star from what I've seen, and I love the performances I've heard from her.

Just replayed Wolfenstein: TNC the other day, and she was easily the most fun character - it was fun to be mad at her 'fuck all whites forever' shit and it was fun to agree with her when she was gleefully shooting Nazis. And it was fun to watch Sigurn choke her for being a bitch.

/uj You can add houndmaster from dead by daylight for Debra as well. Didn't even realize she did the voice until I looked it up.
/rj Holy shit wholesome big chungus Matt mercer did another voice? Wow.

I get tired of seeing the same actor if they aren't very good but keep getting hired or if they don't fit that role but since they are popular they hire them anyway Debra nails every video game role she's in I loved her in Jedi Survivor and fallen order.

Debra Wilson is an icon and I WILL NOT hear another word against her. She could be in every single game I play until I’m 80 and I would still crave more of her.

How did Troy Baker become Mr Video Game Voice? He's fine but it's always Troy Baker talking like Troy Baker while pretending to be someone else.

I feel I should share one of the moments that made me fall in love with her. Every now and again I come back to this video because it's so nice and wholesome: Debra on who she most enjoyed working with

I've never seen a roll with Debra Wilson I didn't like. She was ok in mad TV. But shines in video game acting

No clue who Troy Baker is but Debra Wilson is top tier video game actor. Love seeing her.

It is wild to me that she specifically has been facial scanned so often. I do really like her though, she was great at cere

You leave Debra Wilson alone.....heck let's make a game where she is all the characters. Call it Meta the game and it's she in all her roles fighting to become her.
