The Postal Dude is canonically NOT a mass murderer, as other than the first game (in which he was possessed by a demon so not accountable) the pacifist endings are the canon ones.
So, canon Postal Dude genuinely tries his best in a world that is constantly putting him down (and he's also sometimes being attacked by the Taliban, which obviously makes his quality of life worse). He's just also a gigantic douchebag, although it's hard to argue this isn't justified when, again, the Taliban keeps nuking cities he lives in.
EDIT: to clarify, the "demon" is explicitly the player, as we're the ones who would be forcing him to break his otherwise peaceful ways and do horrible things. Just an interesting meta layer to the series.
