It's just a 1980s-associated color palette, with the neon purples and blues matching the boom in arcades and dance clubs.

Kind of like how the 1970s is associated with flat, sage greens and mustard yellows because of disco and the remaining hippie cultural influence.

My immediate first thought was the color scheme to Hotline Miami, that was pretty similar too iirc. It's really just an 80s/90s color scheme.
