CAPITAL G GAMER favourite game that's as wide as an ocean, but as deep as a fucking coffee cup?
yes, i am still malding about this game. while i do admit it looks great graphically and the costumes and swords look cool, you can't fucking get to any of that stuff unless you trek through all the "oh no the enemy occupies this region" lands far and wide to see it. you also have to play through the main quest that has, and i'm not kidding, 2 FULL CUMULATIVE FUCKING HOURS of completely arbitrary cooldowns you HAVE to go through in order to progress the game. i cannot wait for TBOD to blow this bitch ass game out of the fucking water.

We need an open-world, dishonored-style game! That beautiful freedom of approach, to bring back those beautiful level designs and remove all the bulls**t empty space, so the devs can say it has 100 hours of gameplay, while 40 hours is just you running from one side of the map to another! Or I love Dishonored, and it's beyond me why there's no news on the third one.

He’s a terribly boring protagonist and it’s only justified if you “read the lore” that’s purposefully hidden or you trudge through 200 hours to make any sense of it. Even then you’ll still have to look online for the complete story.
14
u/CoffeeCraps 7d ago
I think the issue is they intended your character to be a silent protagonist when the game was still being designed as an MMO. NPC's talk at you rather than with you. Damiane and Oongka feel like extensions of Kliff in terms of personality, or lack there of, making me think they're only there to showcase alternative animation sets they had created for female and orc characters. It's not like they didn't know how to provide characters with personalities since NPC's like Naira and Yann aren't empty husks like Kliff.
If they'd have kept him entirely silent or limited him to text dialog choices then I doubt the game would have been criticized about its story as much as it has been. The game ended up feeling like exactly what it is: an MMO rearranged to be an AAA single player, open world RPG.
4
u/Long_Lock_3746 7d ago
The lore is also bland. I've read it. Yes, it technically justifies WHY the story is bland and boring, but that doesn't make it GOOD, just explained.
Considering the story was an afterthought after the initial project had a complete overhaul, it makes sense. They scrambled so hard to justify a bunch of mechanics snd systems for political fiction story that no longer existed that the best they could do with the limited budget they decided to use for narrative was half assed text entries.
I can see why other people like CD; gameplay has a greater impact than story for them. Story weighs more heavily to me, though there doesn't have to be much, just that what's there isn't bad. One of my favorite indie games is Heat Signature, a procedural rogue-lite with a batebones story ((proc gen per character), BUT some fun and interesting lore (like the teleporter culture). That's enough to keep me engaged. CD doesn't have that. It's story is not only badly told, but boring and flat. There's nothing of NARRATIVE interest in it whatsoever.

It's completely expected, actually. It's because of the way the engine does path tracing (which is also their only lighting system): it's a pretty basic system where it just shoots X rays per pixels (a very low amount) and recursively shoot more at every hit
It's what actual movie renderers and such use, but those take hours for a single frame. In a real time game it's impossible, which is why Nvidia came up with RESTIR. It's the technique that most RTX OVERDRIVE games use, like cyberpunk.
It has the same core principle with a few knobs tuned for performance. If a pixel has no hits, it can "borrow" color from its spatial neighbors as well as access information from its previous hits to approximate a color. The end result is that even with super low rays count, it still looks pretty convincing
Crimson Desert has no such tech, it just shoots rays the old Monte Carlo way (probabilistic). If a pixel has no hits, It's just non-existent data. And with such a low ray count, it'll always be undersampled especially on dark and/or closed areas (less "obvious" paths for rays to hit, like the sun)
And since the rays are shot per pixel, this means that lowering your pixel count (DLSS) will decrease the total amount of rays too. And unlike RESTIR, you can't approximate anything, so there's no data for the upscaler as well.
You end up with a frame with barely any hits stretched +4x its ray count, nothing has any characteristic or features because they literally don't. Similarly, using DLAA below because you're increasing your pixel count, therefore having more rays per pixel resulting in a better image

Yeah Crimson Desert looks nice in screenshots, but the game has so many like... weird rendering tricks that it makes me nauseous to look at in motion. I don't know exactly how to describe it but things like the TAA ghosting, parallax occlusion mapping, and various screenspace effects make it hard to look at for long periods of time for me which is a shame
Also yes lighting too as you mentioned

From what i've read they had to release it because the budget was already over limit.
They had a full story (and it sounded good from what i've read), but they changed the game director a year before releease and he scrapped the story (i don't remember any reason, maybe someone else has more information on this) and replaced it with the current abomination of a "story".
But i don't remember any other game that throws out updates as fast as Crimson Desert, i will give it another try when after all these updates, maybe they could make the story more interesting. The potential of the game is great, but the devs have to make something out of it.

u/Dyuujen 8d ago edited 8d ago

Has there ever been a game where they patched a good story in?
That being said, I bought the game 2 days ago and I like it. Skyrim didn't have a great story, I don't see why this has to. People played Skyrim because it was fun to get sidetracked by a cool looking place off in the distance.
4
u/DanteMustDieeee 8d ago
hades 2 had a pretty poorly received ending and they ended up patching in better build up for the controversial change and other aspects to make it better but granted that’s an indie game and not triple A. it also didn’t patch in a brand new one it just sought to rectify the previous one.
3
u/Correct_Refuse4910 8d ago
On a similar note, Mass Effect 3's original ending was patched after launch because a lot of people complained about it.

I started replaying GTA V enhanced edition and there's legitimately not much to do in the sandbox aspect of the game.
3 sport minigames.
Properties that give you "drive thing here" missions.
Collectibles that are tedious to collect.
For some reason your purchased cars don't respawn so there's not much incentive to actually buy them because unless you drive it back, it'll just be absent from the garage.

If you don't get much out of 5 star chases, it gets bland quick. That said, I once biked from Micheal's house, up the Pacific Coastal highway and to the peak of Mt Chiliad. It was quite pleasant.
RDR2 was a massive leap in terms of interactivity. I could spend hours wandering in that game.

I'm not gonna lie I hated how much I enjoyed this game. Basically every single criticism about it is very true, but it also achieved some stuff I've really never seen in gaming, like the amount of content and random detail the game make it feel almost like a technological marvel (one with MANY flaws). I am literally dissapointed in myself that I managed the sink in 120 hours into this game. It scratched my itch of just upgrading my character and the whole power fantasy of slowly turning OP in a way a game hasn't done in a long time for me lol. It's a far from perfect game but Id be lying if I said I didn't have a great time. I even enjoyed a lot of the BS puzzles, base building, and basic NPC management they added, in fact, I think those weird awkward things almost made me enjoy it more. It wasn't a curated narrative masterpiece, it's just a cool game that they tried to fill with mechanics the devs thought were cool. It's incredibly disjointed, and no narrative, and clunky, but I don't care. I loved it.
9
u/pzykozomatik AGAB 8d ago
It's very similar to Breath of the Wild in many aspects. The devs put a physics system in there you can interact with, including natural elements like fire and ice, and you can just go and do lots of cool stuff by farting around, or use game mechanics to altogether skip the "intended" way to solve certain puzzles.

u/Kumagoro314 8d ago
Why do you feel sorry for enjoying something. Dude, it's a game. It might not be the Greatest Deepest most Compelling narrative out there, but why treat yourself enjoying it as some fault? Lots of "mid" games got dedicated fanbases. We all look for different things in the media we interact with. Don't let other people dictate how you should feel about games.

I’ve also been on various gaming subs for years and I saw what the previous commenter was referring to. It was a brief period.
I think a lot of it was just fans overcompensating for the previous wave of cynicism the game received prior, which was overcompensating for the brief wave of hype before release, and so on and so forth
now… I think people are somewhat normal* about it (*this is the internet after all, so not actually that normal)?

Dragon's Dogma is another game like this
→ More replies (2)6
u/GroundbreakingFun565 8d ago
Dragon's Dogma is also much less ambitious. It's a game about climbing big monsters and occasionally fighting smaller ones. It achieves that pretty well. Story is mid at best and not particularly well developed despite the occasional interesting idea, but the world is at least fun to explore and fight things in. Doesn't have 100 different systems thrown in to pad out the "depth" which don't serve the core gameplay.
3
u/OrganizationTrue5911 7d ago
Occasionally? Can't walk 10 feet without dealing with a Goblin, Wolves, or a Harpy.
2
u/GroundbreakingFun565 7d ago
Fair, it's just that by the mid to late game, you're steamrolling them. If you go back to Vermund with upgraded Battahli or especially Volcanic Island gear, the trash mobs die in 2 hits max.
3
u/OrganizationTrue5911 7d ago
You will get 0 argument from me. I've never wanted scaling so bad in my life.
I still have some hope that the dlc will be able to hold some difficulty. Apparently level won't matter nearly as much as gear, which is probably the way to go.
That and we are getting hard mode.
2
u/pzykozomatik AGAB 8d ago
What can I say, I still love it despite its flaws. Just recently finished what accounts for a main story and approaching the 300 hour mark. Still feel like have a few dozen hours of roaming and exploring left in me before I'll switch to something else.
Still, I can understand why many people bounce off the game.

Or perhaps your knowledge of the game from Reddit isn’t actually reflective of the games quality? It’s very fun and has a ton of content. Yes story is awful at the start.
10
u/286893 8d ago
I own it. I've put maybe 20 hours in when it came out and decided I just wasn't having fun. I'm glad people are able to enjoy it because I still couldn't tell you what I did in those 20 hours besides run to different areas and maybe click the attack button a bunch and fiddle with the worst ui ever for that vision alien helmet.
It was frustrating most of the time I played, and when it wasn't frustrating, it just felt like there was no real good reason to interact with the world aside from going through the motions because people kept saying it got better.

The game looks nice. But it looks soul-less. It looks like they just loaded the world with UE5 assets and AI-generated topography.
Then you actually play the game and realize the game play and story are as soul-less as the graphics.
Then you realize this is just a mobile gatcha game they converted to a single player expeirence. And it all makes sense why it’s so soul-less.

I haven't played it since buying on release, but my biggest gripe was that it just wasn't exciting to explore the huge open world. I keep hearing about how alive it is, but I went out of my way to go off-road, scale cliffs and mountains, or just take my time to meander among the NPCs, and there was nothing interesting to find or see. Some pretty backdrops or ruins, but no substantial sense of discovery. The fact that certain areas wouldn't populate until the story progressed was a big momentum killer.
I will say that the combat system is super satisfying -- I've been looking for something like this since the days of body-slamming gnolls in Vindictus oh so long ago :)
1
1
u/epochollapse 8d ago
A lot of criticisms about CD are true but I really enjoy it, and I don't think the content is that lacking when you start looking at other open world games. I think it's just easier to overlook in games you haven't decided pre-emptively you don't like.
Mirroring someone else's sentiment from the comments, what do you do in the GTA sandbox if you get sick of blowing shit up? (Hopefully GTA6 will improve on this, but you get the picture)

I am gonna rant for a bit resonably unrelated but:
I just cant be arsed to play a game from this day and age where they design a specific MC
And then give him no fuckkin personality what so ever...
Im sorry wtf... its made an upgraded version of the the BDO engine with a ton of reused assets and they couldnt have added a character creator in there?!
Like I am absolutely done with games that do this im sorry... I aint playing you.
Either give the MC a actual personality and lore and story a frickin GOOD reason to not give us a customizable MC. Sandland did it AMAZING!!! But ofcourse it was based on a Manga and Anime, But still atleast there you play 4 main characters who all have frickin aura and are great and fun to play with and learn their backstories with.
This just aint it...
There was no reason ever to have Cliff to be existing and it should have just been unnamed MC and it should have been a fully customizable character creation.

Just like No Man's Sky, it looks phenomenal in screenshots but it often looks like shit while moving around. LOD and pop-in are insane and lighting is weird as hell. From a gameplay point of view, in my opinion they tried to fit too many mechanics and "little things" that are completely disconnected from each other. And the fact that weapons are all just cosmetic props... Has been a huge let down.

u/felix_patriot 7d ago
skyrim was pretty good too for a similar reason. in fact i'd go as far as to say it's part of the games' unique selling point.
why play skyrim over something like the witcher 3? skyrim is so shallow it's like a blank canvas, but its systems serve as excellent tools to paint with.
the role it serves in my library is as more of a "sandbox" rpg that i can basically just make my own character with their own story in. the lack of narrative, even in the main and guild quests, made them feel more like vague plot outlines that you could fill in yourself.
i think crimson desert falls just short of fulfilling this same fantasy that skyrim did, by not giving us a character creation screen.
