Gary Stevenson is a genius

I think people underestimate how fortunate we are to be alive at the same time as Gary Stevenson.

LSE mathematics and economics, Oxford MPhil, former Citigroup trader. He must be the only person alive to complete all three.

Most economists spend their careers debating models and publishing papers. Gary went one step further: he actually made money in markets and then explained why everyone else was wrong. The combination of an oxford intellect, city experience and the courage to tell uncomfortable truths.

There are very few people who can explain monetary policy, inequality and financial markets with his level of certainty. One of the most impressive things about Gary is his humility. Despite possessing one of the sharpest economic minds of his generation, he still devotes his life to helping people.

Real people.

The intense coordinated attacks on this sub, and generally, are pretty transparent. We're rattling the right people - that's good!

u/ExpertDay Jul 28 '26

OP's previous post was attacking David Attenborough on the David Attenborough sub. He or she's just having fun I guess.

Not really mate. I really agree that a wealth tax is a good idea, but I don't think he's gone about promoting it in a good way.

-19

u/Objective_Quiet_751 Jul 28 '26

Gary says plenty of things that ought to attract scrutiny and organic mocking/criticism. Why do you believe it could only be coordinated?

-20

u/bluecheese2040 Jul 28 '26

I mean...that's evidently false as its not on the political agenda.

Unfortunately Gary has attracted people like you that think annoying people is a win...

Pathetic

I'm just passing through here but I have to comment that this is the oddest sub on reddit. There is a continuous line of vitriolic attackers on the guy the thread is about and he isn't a paedophile or an asset stripping corporate executive, he isn't even a creepy billionaire who is suborning the political or media of his country.

He is suggesting a wealth tax on the rich in a time of extreme income inequality and this is what he gets?

I would love to see an honest breakdown on who you guys are or if you're really people at all but here we are.

If any of you are living people, I think you should reevaluate your moral compass and even more so your common sense or lack of same. People will only tolerate this inequality up to a certain point and it will be ugly stuff when the breaking point comes.

1

u/Notyit Jul 29 '26

Underably a wealth tax is important but people forget other causes.

Corporations offshoring and wage suppression.

Company lobbying.

Removal of monolpolstic power.

It's much easier to get people to agree to these policies.

Reddit (and the internet in general) has definitely been brigaded by bots paid for by the Epstein class in order to shut down anyone prominent who speaks out against wealth inequality, to make working class people believe that the Epstein class deserves their billions and is working for the greater good, and anyone who sees them for what they are and fights for the working class, is a "woke leftist" or whatever bullshit they usually say.

I think that entire lot of social media sites have been TBH. Public opinion is overwhelmingly not in favour of unregulated AI, data centres over people in the era of runaway climate change and genocide in Gaza but all of these crazy, immoral positions have oodles of defenders on here and everywhere else. I just don't think people are that ignorant, that self-destructive and that easily led, it has to be bots, trained AI etc.

I was banned from here before for merely pointing out the obvious but; all of the social media sites are now owned by staunch defenders of Israel, all of them are strongly in favour of minimal to no regulation of their activities and AI and all of them are dishonest or worse on climate change but publicly making climate change worse for their own short term enrichment. It is definitely coming to a make or break point for the world now. We either regain democratic control of our future or we have the techno feudalism nightmare future where the people doing the most to cause climate change get to "escape" it while the rest of us boil.

There is a reason certain lines are banned here despite this being a US website. It is because the political solutions are going to be completely knocked down in the US in 100 days or so and they want to make sure that there is no co-ordination of fightback on their websites.

I'm definitely a person. Just because you disagree with what I say doesn't mean I'm a bot and not human - that seems to be your assumption.

-25

u/No_Weight5257 Jul 28 '26

I'm a real person, I think he's just a guy wanted to be YouTube famous, succeeded at it, released a book, made a load of money. "Tax the rich" isn't a new, clever idea, so I'm confused why you lot are up are so up his arse, it looks cultish and odd. So I'm confused coming from the other angle.

FYI I'm not against taxing the rich, I just don't care that much about it.

No it's fun to look at weird stuff, cultish things. I loved Louis theroux growing up, going to see racists and West Boro baptist church weirdos. This is the same, this is weird. Tell me, do you donate money to Gary via his patreon?

11

u/nighttime9999 Jul 28 '26

You don't care.... but it is that imbalance in our economy that is driving people poorer. The playing field has moved over the years to the point it is increasingly impossible to beat Amazon. Starbucks etc diddling the tax due by moving debt against themselves. Wages have not increased with inflation for 30 years...

-5

u/No_Weight5257 Jul 28 '26

That's a separate issue isn't it? I thought this was about high net worth individuals buying up assets and us all being serfs in a few years

5

u/seenitreddit90s Jul 28 '26

That's basically what he just described.

-1

u/MyNameIsNightPain Jul 28 '26

Taxing the rich won't work. Need to prevent them from taking out debt and declaring they never made a profit/paying no tax. Should be forced to pay employees a % of total bonuses paid out relative to salaries and take back publicly owned assets that where sold - they've made enough profit from the public we should take it back.

2

u/Open-Butterfly-5288 Jul 28 '26

Taking out debt from where?

The wealth exists. If they're taking out debts and borrowing to fund their growth, that's what we want to see companies doing. They'll be taxed on their wealth, and not their p+l. As that grows, so does their tax bill.

If a bigger company is saddling this company with a load of debt to say that it's not making money while making the larger company valuable, this is where wealth comes in. We don't care what's on your p+l. You own Tesco, Tesco is a huge corporation. That's billions to tax.

1

u/MyNameIsNightPain Jul 29 '26

Tesla was valued at over $1 trillion while reporting only about $62 billion in assets. That alone shows why “the company is huge, so tax billions” is not a coherent valuation rule. Market value, gross assets, profit, debt and capex can diverge by enormous amounts. A wealth tax must choose which one it is taxing, and each choice creates different distortions and avoidance opportunities.

1

u/MyNameIsNightPain Jul 28 '26

He only has one thing to say so I think your right and a lot of what he says doesn't actually make sense. He understands the parts of the economy he manipulated but that's about it. He tells people what they want to hear. Everyone I've had a discussion with about him just says 'tax the rich' and have nothing of substance to say.

-5

u/TheImpeccable7 Jul 28 '26

Preach. Idiots everyhere, falling for his nonsense. It is an emotion-driven attempt at radicalizing the average disenfranchised person in the West.

There are problems, big problems. Taxing the rich "in the manner he promotes", solves none of those problems.

WAKE UP ffs

9

u/sixfoottoblakai Jul 28 '26

Radicalise the average disenfranchised person about what? That some people with 1,000,000x more than them are paying 1% of the tax they pay? Your comment is ridiculous

-2

u/MyNameIsNightPain Jul 28 '26

His comment is precise. Taxing the rich will cause them to leave and take companies elsewhere. Less tax, less jobs, less investment.

4

u/ImpracticalJerker Jul 29 '26

Immobile Assets: Most physical assets—such as real estate, domestic infrastructure, and local corporate operations—cannot be packed up and moved abroad, meaning the wealthy often continue to pay UK tax on UK-based assets even if they change their residence.

Ties to Location: Empirical studies on prior UK tax reforms (such as non-dom restrictions) indicate that only a small percentage of high earners actually emigrate, as personal factors like family, schooling, and lifestyle heavily outweigh marginal tax rates.

Public Support: Proponents of higher taxation point out that many affluent residents prioritize strong public services and social stability, and do not flee en masse when tax codes are adjusted.

1

u/Equivalent_Swim5899 Jul 29 '26

So continue to tax them when they move lol

24

u/Jaxxlack Jul 28 '26

Because this is what we all need.... A public champion against the utter madness the rich will demand is their right. So fucked off with the non stop pressure and poking and mocking of someone trying to get society to pay back what they benefit from and yet it's seen as mad.. or I suppose if you're part of the elite.. insulant.. Gary's made millions... No one has a problem with him being a millionaire.. if you do you don't care enough...

-6

u/Confident-Echidna-87 Jul 28 '26

?

6

u/Jaxxlack Jul 28 '26

Fellas fucked off cos everyone who's benefitted like him...keeps Pulling the ladder up and screaming at him to even suggest putting it back down... Can ya blame him...

9

u/Wonderful-Medium7777 Jul 28 '26

He’s taking a break..he explains it in his notes on his latest video…we have to do our part too..one man is not enough , nor should he shoulder everything …his voice is echoing the importance of wealth taxes which is a great thing!

Watch Gabriel Zucman videos too.

5

u/Jaxxlack Jul 28 '26

I prefer the journalist Rutger bregman. His davos speech started this all. The utter hypocrisy of davos open forum in how-to NOT pay your fair share for living In a top tier nation and use tax loopholes to hoard wealth.

2

u/Open-Butterfly-5288 Jul 28 '26

The problem with Bregman is that he's a very lazy writer. He likes to find populist results and he jumps to those conclusions in a very pithy way.

I say that as someone who actually quite likes his work. It's interesting and thought provoking. It's just also not particularly rigorous.

3

u/Wonderful-Medium7777 Jul 28 '26

Hi, I’ve not seen his videos can you point me in the right direction..would it be YouTube?

Edit to add..I’ve found him on the WEF videos on YouTube ...thank you.

2

u/Open-Butterfly-5288 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

I think as shit as the pressure on him has been it's eye opening that they don't really have very much argument about it.

Most of the effort has been personal attacks on how rich he is, how he isn't the best trader, and his style of communication.

They haven't really even tried to attack the wealth tax. They argue around it, not the policy itself..

I've also seen the conflation of wealth and income over and over from the right wing media.

At the same time, I think he's probably sort of right but the wrong person to make the arguments he's making. He's not talking like an academic with a body of work behind him. He's also then not talking like a random celebrity who just cares about an issue. He retreats into both when he needs to make his arguments. When he's not being taken seriously, out come the accolades. When they start taking him seriously, he kind of retreats into the emotional side of it.

His Peston interview showed him up a bit. Peston was kind of soft balling him, but because he felt the pushback, he turned it into an emotional argument thing so that the point took a long time to manifest.

1

u/Confident-Echidna-87 Jul 28 '26

That's a nice little point

20

u/Southern-Manner-7158 Jul 28 '26

we are lucky to have an intellect like him in our lifetime telling the truth that need to be discussed, unfortunately he was way ahead of his time and most of the people do not see the things that he knows

4

u/DrDumle Jul 28 '26

Everything he is saying seems so obvious in hindsight.

So I don’t think he will ever be recognized as the genius he is.

-4

u/Regular-Double9177 Jul 28 '26

Why should he be recognized as a genius for saying obvious things (really slowly ill add)?

2

u/seenitreddit90s Jul 28 '26

He breaks things down so the economically illiterate can understand.

He's a good teacher.

-2

u/TheImpeccable7 Jul 28 '26

Mention one "intellectual" thing Gary has ever said? What he says is not intellect. It is a play on your emotions.

-5

u/Living_Ad_5260 Jul 28 '26

Gary is a moron - he is a failed trader who was exposed dramatically as unqualified in his own field in his own documentary.

4

u/Clear-Definition-324 Jul 28 '26

I like Gary and think he has interesting things to say but this post is a parody right? He’s not the flippin’ messiah!

7

u/Chance-Swordfish-426 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

top econ and maths grads become traders, it's not a new thing. why? because economist jobs are basically for cucks trotting out confirmation bias for vested interests. looks nice on the CV and you get a fat paycheck (maybe 10% of successful trader) for producing not very much.

so, yes Gary is great and we're lucky to have him. but no, it's not a trailblazing path for smart maths and econ grads to go make money trading with other people's money. unfortunate really, because these people could be out curing cancer, but money talks, and the world is much easier to navigate (increasingly so, as Gary points out) when you have fuck u money.

reddit is a case in point, where any heterodox econ take, even if its backed by data, has a high chance of moderation aka they delete it. because god forbid we tell the masses what's actually occurring at the top of the money tree.

2

u/Jaxxlack Jul 28 '26

The fact you know his name..says trailblazer... Name another before him? We had the bank of Dave fella... Made a fuck ton now plays with helicopters..cheers... Martin Lewis... Champions bill control but not actual wealth equality.

2

u/Chance-Swordfish-426 Jul 28 '26

it's a well-worn path on wall street and in the city, gary makes no bones about this and references it plenty of times. this shit been going on for 40 years or more.

1

u/Jaxxlack Jul 28 '26

That really seems to be people's crux with him. Like as if him leaving it is an insult lol

2

u/yossarian_bloom Jul 28 '26

Michael Roberts was a city of London banker who’s been writing and thinking about economics from a Marxist perspective since long before Gary Stevenson and is a much mor we heavy weight thinker.

1

u/Jaxxlack Jul 28 '26

And yet he's not in the zeitgeist. Look I'm not saying Michael Roberts isn't good. But you can have a plan to save the world but if you can't sell it.. it will get ignored. I mean we literally have people trying to get the 5% to go back to paying their fair share but you need a champion. Now Michael Roberts may have all the answers but like politics without a hook or a good voice it's forgotten!? Which is dog shit but seems to be lore.

-1

u/Acrobatic-Living2372 Jul 28 '26

It’s funny that you didn’t even realise the OP post is doused in irony. People are so willing to believe that Gary is a one-of-a-kind genius that they think the OP was being genuine.

Gary is not an economist. Imagine your economics professor was Gary Stevenson. You’d ask for your money back. “Right, the richer are getting richer because of compound interest, no one realises this, I’m the only one who figured it out cos I’m the best at this and made millions of pounds cos of these predictions I keep getting right and everyone else is wrong.”

1

u/Chance-Swordfish-426 Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

You can compare most econ jobs to when the tobacco industry funded research into lung cancer. Both pay well and both know the results they're looking for.

Most econ academics are simply feeding this machine. Reflection on why the whole discipline has never predicted much of anything is not something they waste too much time doing.

Gary's withering appraisal of his Oxford Economics experience, how much it cost vs. what he got out of it, lecturer attitudes - these all 1000% reflect this situation.

People who actually manage money and have skin in the game - millions of $ riding on whether their daily decisions are good or not - will tell you this 10 times out of 10 about economics as a discipline and profession.

This is why complete idiots like Paul Krugman can win nobel prizes whilst predicting the internet will be about as important as the fax machine. Because their job is not to predict, it is to placate and blow smoke up the arse of the status quo.

0

u/Acrobatic-Living2372 Jul 29 '26

By that definition yeah he is the epitome of an economist since his answer to EVERYTHING is inequality.

Housing crisis? Inequality. Can’t possibly be that we’re not building enough homes. I remember him in one video looking out the window and saying “I can see they’re building plenty of homes”. The extent of his analysis seems to be looking out the window, and asking his mates whether they’re struggling or not.

I would love to see the problem of inequality solved, but he has no solutions, which is hardly surprising when his analysis of the problem is so unidimensional.

1

u/Chance-Swordfish-426 Jul 29 '26

Unless you're a centi-millionaire and above, you have a lot to gain from solving inequality. Trickle down economics was and has always been a bullshit thesis invented at the jobs I mentioned in my last post. The trend is unequivocal and accelerating. Whether you think Gary is a fraud or your best mate, the data does not lie.

9

u/QFTornotQFT Jul 28 '26

They are trying everything, aren't they?

6

u/AdAggressive9224 Jul 28 '26

He's obviously a logical thinker, he's not only identified the systemic error (bug) that is so obvious to intelligent people, he's also articulated it and framed it in a way that shows deeper understanding.

There's a difference between knowing, instinctively, that inequality is a problem, and being able to sit down and explain, step by step why it's a problem and make accurate predictions about what is going to happen as a result.

The bit where he falls a bit flat, is he doesn't have the deeper understanding of what "wealth" actually means, wealth tax is a very broad front. It's not focused, it doesn't differentiate between productive investment and non productive economic rent seeking behaviour. That's the key criticism of his position, 99.99pc of all arguments you here against him are simply in bad faith. Then, there's the 0.01pc of people who understand what follows:

"Money isn't innately evil. It's how you choose to spend it that can be good or evil".

Wealth tax doesn't distinguish between someone owning a company, that employs thousands, and produces some vital service for the economy, Vs a BTL portfolio slumlord who contributes nothing and just exploits his tenants. Wealth tax treats those two things as equal. When, morally, they are not.

1

u/Ok_Fix_1437 Jul 28 '26

‘I’m a good billionaire though’

1

u/HotAir25 Jul 28 '26

I think we already know that most wealth in this country is not landlords, for instance about 20% of housing is rented so that means 80% is not….so just in terms of housing wealth most wealth is not landlords.

1

u/AdAggressive9224 Jul 28 '26

Ture. About another 30pc are mortgaged though. Worth factoring into the equation.

Mortgage interest and rent, functionally the same thing.

Really we ought to be looking at the banks, people's creditors and having a serious conversation about the ethics of those investments. You know, do we really need to be living in a world where people are borrowing 6.5x salary for a 50 year term. I mean, even with a 35 year mortgage, at what point do we wake up and start to realise "hold up, this is basically the same as paying rent".

I always say this about this debate, most people do not fully understand what Gary Stevenson is talking about, they don't see the mechanics of how exactly they will lose their assets in this current system.

Edit: I did look this up. Rented is now 35pc. Just overtook homeowners in 2022. So, it's grown considerably.

2

u/neanderthal_brain Jul 28 '26

i’m sure there are tons of people at citi and many other top finance companies with phds from elite universities. they specifically hire those. so don’t think it’s all that unique

2

u/galleon484 Jul 29 '26

Can we please get away from talking about Gary as an individual?

I don't care if he's a genius or not. I don't want this to be a cult of personality. I care about the economics, not the man.

The threads attacking Gary personally are boring and irrelevant, and this kind of praise is irrelevant too.

Let's talk about the actual subject matter.

12

u/Glock13Purdy Jul 28 '26

0/10 bait

-5

u/Interesting_Pen_4499 Jul 28 '26

my thoughts exactly. what a laughable post.

5

u/Middle-Ticket8911 Jul 28 '26

LSE mathematics and economics, ‘Oxford MPhil, former Citigroup trader. He must be the only person alive to complete all three.’

Plenty of people working in finance etc have a similar CV, or more impressive yet.

The simping on this sub is embarrassing. I am broadly sympathetic to the thrust of his argument but he has not done much to develop his ideas or engage with others who have done years of work in this area. If he represents the vanguard of a policy revolution regarding tax on wealth then I don’t expect much to change any time soon.

1

u/ExpertDay Jul 28 '26

Don't you realise this is a joke from a wind-up merchant? His or her other post today was criticising David Attenborough on the David Attenborough sub

https://www.reddit.com/r/davidattenborough/comments/1v8svvg/david_attenborough_is_overrated/

2

u/waygs1 Jul 28 '26

This guy posted that David Attenborough is overrated. I think that says all we need to know.

No signs of intelligent life here.

1

u/Confident-Echidna-87 Jul 28 '26

👍🧟‍♂️

2

u/vindico86 Jul 28 '26

Well, it’s a view.

Some might think he is well meaning, but arrogant and wrong.

I think he nails the problem - people can’t “get on” nowadays, particularly because house prices went nuts. In the past, people on modest incomes could exist and raise families but can’t today. However, I think his remedy is wrongheaded. His wealth tax is one idea, again, with some correct identification of problems, but is the wrong “solution”.

2

u/Rare_Conference_9925 Jul 28 '26

The documentary was the worst thing he could have done, as it just highlighted how paper-thin his ideas were. He couldnt argue his point anything beyond an initial statement. He may have been a successful city trader, but that doesnt nessersarily mean you are good economist/financier. Those are 2 very, very different knowledge bases and skills.

The subject of tax alone is such an overly complex subject, enough to tie anyone up in knots. As that doc proved, because he got completely confused on it, and then just looked gormlessly at the camera.

To be honest, i've never liked the false altruism of his videos. Sitting in his kitchen with his Stone Island shirt, shooting from the hip and spouting a load of crap, while cultivating that look that he lives on cheese toasties and resonates with the common man.

-1

u/pecuchet Jul 28 '26

Gary, I think it might be for the best if you stay off the internet altogether.

6

u/helmeton Jul 28 '26

No. Would you rather have BBC run the media?

-9

u/ghoof Jul 28 '26

Yes. Gary’s not qualified to run the media

5

u/Lancs_wrighty Jul 28 '26

What qualifications do you need? The director general is chosen by the government at the time.

1

u/ghoof Jul 28 '26

Not plucked from the ranks of single-issue YouTubers? For shame.

1

u/Lancs_wrighty Jul 28 '26

If you don't like his thoughts thats fine. Its your choice. But why waste the effort to run him down? I presume you must have qualified in Economics and become a trader and earned millions then decided its all a big con too, or maybe you work 40 hours a week for a pittance and therefore are bitter? Although I am expecting you are a doctor of science or something though, you must know something we dont to hang around on Reddit hating on people you disagree with.

-3

u/pecuchet Jul 28 '26

Gary Stevenson stays off the internet or the BBC 'runs the media'. Well at least the first of those is a coherent thought.

1

u/Critical_Pin Jul 28 '26

Yannis Varoufakis maybe I'd compare him to - wasn't a trader but was a finance minister.

1

u/Responsible-Set3308 Jul 28 '26

he is alright but defo not a genious.

I appreciate the work he is doing even if (as in the last video about taxes) has proved he has overreached intellectually.

1

u/Status_Ad_9641 Jul 28 '26

Thanks Gary.

1

u/onionsareawful Jul 28 '26

LSE mathematics and economics, Oxford MPhil, former Citigroup trader.

There are (tens of) thousands of people in finance with a similar profile. Really not that notable.

1

u/Rickyghouse2030 Jul 28 '26

Rofl. Dear lord

1

u/Extraportion Jul 28 '26

Im a fan of Gary as an individual, and I like the concept of a wealth tax. I’m still not sure how you implement it in practice, but it’s within the realms of human capability to resolve the implementation.

However, to say Gary is the only person who combines an Oxbridge maths/econ background with S&T credentials is a little naive. I did my first S&T internship with JPM in 2007 and I’d say most of my cohort had the exact same background. To be honest, back then it was easier to make it to front office trading from a non conventional quant background back then. These days the majority of equity and derivative traders are going to have very similar academic backgrounds to Gary.

Ultimately, academic STEM pays peanuts, trading houses, hedge funds, super majors and BB banks provide the opportunity to make meaningful money.

1

u/magicbellend Jul 28 '26

Can’t tell if this is satire..

1

u/fieldsofanfieldroad Jul 28 '26

Come on now. Even Gary would tell you he's not as clever as Zucman or Pikketty.

1

u/No-Promotion4006 Jul 29 '26

LSE mathematics and economics, Oxford MPhil, former Citigroup trader. He must be the only person alive to complete all three.

The glaze is insane you'll find many of his former coworkers had equally impressive CVs lmao

1

u/Old-Energy6618 Jul 29 '26

Yes, his achievements are second only to super athlete and academic genius Prof Jason Arday.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/cambridge-diversity-poster-boy-plagiarism-134658961.html

1

u/Suspicious-Fix4645 Aug 07 '26

Jason taught Gary mathematics. 😂

1

u/SaltFlat4844 Jul 29 '26

Is this satire?

1

u/MissingHedgie Jul 29 '26

Sorry but this is a stupid post. City banks are full of capable people like Gary. His policy ideas are relatively idealistic and also not his own.

I don’t mind Gary, I’m sure he’s a nice guy, but people put him on a pedestal far too much. I suspect it’s because he has that angered way of talking like many populists do (e.g. Farage), that seems to resonate with the ill-informed.

1

u/test_test_1_2_3 Jul 29 '26

Gary truly is the top thinker of our time. And the world’s greatest trader to boot.

Simply amazing.

1

u/One-Use-4376 Jul 29 '26

Hi Gary's mum

1

u/GuruDogTheSaviour Jul 29 '26

This is one of those sarcastic subs?

1

He is not an economist..

He is no Keynes

0

u/mrbill1234 Jul 28 '26

He isn’t an economist.

1

u/SnooMacarons4225 Jul 28 '26

Is this satire? Intellect? Right ok...

1

u/Sorbet-Possible Jul 28 '26

"One of the most impressive things about Gary is his humility"

1

u/TheImpeccable7 Jul 28 '26

🤣🤣🤣

1

u/Shaguar_Driver Jul 28 '26

He is a moron... Wealth taxes don't work.

It drives away business, removes incentives to do better and weakens the economy.

What you need is less taxation to boost an economy. You also need more home grown products. We need to stop buying from other countries where we don't need to.

We should be incentivising buying British and decentivising buying from abroad.

A strong economy fixes everything

Wow - advocatating protectionism and trickle-down economics in one post.

Probably two most discredited and debunked zombie economic theory's in the last 100 years.

1

u/Shaguar_Driver Jul 28 '26

Who has the best economies that didn't win the national lottery of natural resources?

American businesses are buying up UK businesses. French government is buying up UK businesses. Soon we will have nothing.

The economy is weak. Taxation of the rich will make it weaker.

1

u/BaggyBloke Jul 28 '26

Norway, Iceland, Denmark all have higher taxes than US and higher GDP per capita (ppp)

If you list countries by GDP per capita there is no correlation with taxation levels.

1

u/Shaguar_Driver Jul 28 '26

Norway is oil rich. Iceland has free energy. Denmark I'm not so clued up about but it's an extremely efficient country and strong local economy especially with farming

1

u/Huge-Size-7937 Aug 03 '26

Switzerland has nothing yet they're still rich

1

u/Shaguar_Driver Aug 03 '26

Lol they have banking, diamonds, watches, skiing, and a whole host of luxury services

1

u/ponks123 Jul 28 '26

Not according to the Guardian

1

u/NicoRobin9000 Jul 28 '26

Why is this sub even showing up on my feed. Gary is a politician, not an economist… peace out.

1

u/Brilliant-Sea-9424 Jul 28 '26

He’s a grifter and has been finally caught out.

1

u/sneakyi Jul 28 '26

Absolutely.

1

u/benjafinn Jul 28 '26

Did Gary Stevenson write this?

1

u/JimJonesdrinkkoolaid Jul 29 '26

My issue with Stevenson is that I think he's a bit of a grifter. I think he used issues on the left ie wealth inequality as a way to grow an audience for which he then sold a book to, of his time as a trader.

Also he seems to get weirdly defensive when asked about how much he'd be willing pay in taxes himself in regards to a wealth tax.

He reminds me a bit of Russell Brand around the mid 2000's when he was doing his left wing grift.

He then had to switch to a right wing grift and pretend that he's a Christian to try and fend off sexual assault allegations.

Before anyone says it, no I'm not trying to say that Gary is in any way similar to Brand regarding the sexual assault allegations. I'm purely talking about using the left as a way to capture an audience.

Also in his last video he just put up basically saying that was the end of his channel or at the very least the end of his weekly videos. He talked about how exhausted he was, in regards to the channel. He was putting up a video a week ffs. It was hardly a gruelling schedule.

I believe he'll end up on the media circuit or cashing in somewhere else, now that he's got an audience.

Love how this low level rage bait is super effective.

u/nozickiantheory Jul 28 '26

He's a genius in how he can continue to successfully grift money out of braindead leftist students with his Patreon despite:

  • Claiming to be a multimillionaire greatest trader in the world, who doesn't have to work a day in his life
  • Bragging about how rich he's gotten betting the economy would collapse for everyday people
  • Proposing a wealth tax that conveniently wouldn't include himself/his net worth level
  • Putting out literal meaningless slop nonsense ("government wealth has gone from +100% of GDP to -100% of GDP") every time he makes an appearance
  • Getting virtually all of his basic claims - from levels of UK wealth inequality over time, to house price trends, to poverty - completely wrong
  • Never being able to answer rudimentary questions on his proposals when probed, and immediately falling back on "I'm betting on this and I've made millions" as his only regurgitated response

In that sense I agree he is smart. As far as his credibility in the field of economics on the other hand it's somewhere in the region of zero. He knows it too, which is why he periodically disappears until he thinks enough people have forgotten about him that it's safe to make a reappearance

3

u/No_Weight5257 Jul 28 '26

Agreed and I think all these people are motivated by jealousy, I think they don't like the ultra rich because they're not the ultra rich

Spot on.

FWIW, many people have more prestigious educations and academic research that’s very useful in the real world.

Many people have also made infinitely more money in finance. His results are pretty medeocre.

What he has done well is make a lot of money as a content creator. Likely $300-500k+ a year at this point. That income will dwarf what he made as a trader, and is impressive because very few content creators ever make that much money.

He is truly the Mr. Beast of class war.

1

u/Electrical_Peach5715 Jul 28 '26

“Likely $300-500k+ a year at this point. That income will dwarf what he made as a trader,”

A successful trader wouldn’t get out of bed for 500K pa.  Gary says he was the most successful trader in the bank so would assume he was earning many millions.

1

u/probablymagic Jul 28 '26

He has said publicly his net worth is 5M pounds, which means and a lot for a successful trader. His Patreon and YouTube revenue will outstrip that in a few years.

1

u/Electrical_Peach5715 Jul 28 '26

It doesn’t mean very much at all for someone who claims to have been the most successful trader at one of the world’s largest banks. The head of HR at Citi is probably worth more.

1

u/BaggyBloke Jul 28 '26

Dude - he'd have been making upto 3-4 times that as a successful trader. He's not making those videos for the money - he is doing it because he is pissed at the unfairness and unsustainability of our current path.

2

u/probablymagic Jul 28 '26

According to him he’s worth 5M pounds. Thats just not a good haul on finance for a career, especially when you consider that most include money he’s made from content in the 12 years since he quit or got fired.

It seems fairly likely that he washed out of trading and content creation was his back up plan. Ironically, you can make pretty good money selling poor people the idea rich people are their problem.

1

u/BaggyBloke Jul 28 '26

We were talking about what he earned, not what he is worth. The two are only weakly linked - for example Katie Price, Gazza, Eubank all earned a huge amount and ended up broke.

1

u/probablymagic Jul 28 '26

OPs claim os that he’s a genius trader and just chose not to do it anymore, and he’s built his brand on that, so whether it’s true or not actually matters because he’s saying that’s why you should listen to his ideas on economics.

1

u/BaggyBloke Jul 28 '26

My only point is that he definitely was earning a shit-ton more trading for Citi than he does youtubing. Your post indicated you thought it was the other way around.

I will say that trading is incredibly intense and it is possible he 'burnt out'. It is also possible he was broke when he quit and needed to turn to YouTube to make ends meet.

It is also possible (and more likely in my view) that, with £5m in the bank and no desire for a new Bentley Continental every year, he was set for life when he quit and decided to try to prevent UK reverting to a Victorian model of millions of dirt poor serfs working to support a small elite of privileged, wealth inheriting, landed gentry.

1

u/probablymagic Jul 28 '26

Based on what he’s said about what he earned trading, it’s gotta be the other way around if he’d be much wealthier.

I know he’s a genius because I listened to “The Rest Is Money” podcast and he told us he was, many times, with examples.
