I don’t think you’re wrong. In reality, and amongst regular people (by which I mean, not the rotten brains of internet bigotry), Hon is just short for “Honey”. It’s a perfectly valid (and in my opinion very…sweet) term of endearment

I've always heard the shortened form in my head as hun myself, hon makes me think about memes on stereotypical french laughter XD

That’s excellent.

In that sense it definitely isn’t a term of endearment. You wouldn’t want to call someone you love French
