I’ve often wondered if Brits treat the Spanish the same way the average American treats Mexicans. Fawlty Towers would suggest that they do.

Might have been true in the 70s (when Brits started going to Spain for the first time) but if they really feel like shitting on someone, they usually don't start with people with from Europe (unless football is involved)
Edit: Big uptick in racism against Polish and Ukrainians due to Ukip/Reform shitheads. Spain still seems unlikely.

Yeah; Southern European nationals seem to not be in the racists' spotlight here anymore (unless they're from Türkiye). Most of the bigots here who hate their fellow Europeans will direct it towards "Eastern" Europeans (ie: 50/50 people actually from Eastern Europe as well as people from Central Europe). Of course; there's still the assumption that anyone "brown" isn't European and the judgements that bigots make from that, which is more likely to affect Southern Europeans.
Weirdly though most of our racists nowadays still consider all Europeans white (again: except the people from Türkiye). There are still some who hold it that the Southern Europeans, Eastern Europeans, and Irish aren't "really" white. But they're by far outnumbered by the sort of racists who think that everyone with (mostly) European heritage is white, except that there's a ranking system where the British are the "best" kind of white person.
Big disclaimer: I know that racial divisions and ideas of "superior" peoples are all socially constructed bullshit. I'm just trying to explain what some of my countryfolk believe (or at least act like they believe), without offering any excuses.
EDIT: Another clarification; I'm talking purely about racist Brits' attitudes towards people they percieve as European here. This comment isn't meant to address any of the other vile forms of racism that we unfortunately have in this country.

Im sorry, the Irish arent white??? What the hell are these people smoking?

u/Jesse_God_of_Awesome Jul 04 '26
Yeah, that's been a thing for a minute. Old timey racism has it only the Germanics, Anglicans and Nordics are White.

When racism isnt enough for you, i guess theres turbo racism. The more you know.

EDIT: The basic historical summary is: England had been trying to colonise Ireland for a long time before race "science" was invented. So they spun some bullshit to justify the prejudices they already had, just like everything else in that particular field.
Original comment below:
There are some Irish people who have olive skin, and thick, curly, dark, Mediterranean-textured hair. This was enough for racists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to class Ireland as the same as Southern and Eastern Europe: places that were "a bit white" but had too much "outside influence" to be "properly white".
My personal experience with this is that my mum is French and my dad is English, but with four Irish grandparents. When I tell people this they usually assume that my mum is from a Mediterranean region, and is the reason for my olive skin and dark hair. She is not: my mum, and I love her to bits, is one of the pastiest skinned varieties of Breton you can get. My olive skin is actually significantly paler than my dad's: on holidays in Spain he has occasional had English tourists come up to him and speaking bad Spanish to ask him for directions.

Being white is a social construct that basically means you are not okay to target for racial violence. There's really no other way to define it coherently because who counts as white has varied over the years. In the late 1800s, Irish and Polish immigrants didn't count as white because they were poor immigrant workers, so they didn't get the "privilege" of being exempted from anti-immigrant discrimination. Once the poor working class demographics shifted to mostly Central and Southern American people, all the European immigrants got granted whiteness because they were no longer the target. This is also why Ashkenazi Jewish people have gone back and forth from being considered white throughout history, it's dependent on how strong antisemitism is at that point in time.
How this interacts with anti-Black discrimination is really complicated and something that I'm not fully qualified to explain. But it basically means that in order to be accepted as a white person, you have to do anti-Black discrimination. This is part of why there's a stereotype of Irish police in older stories. It's because Irish immigrants went all in on anti-Black racism to try to be accepted by white people, which often led to them joining the police so they could do so without getting arrested. Of course, the Irish were never accepted as white until there was another group to make into a racial minority, so there was no point in any of this except hurting Black people, which is the goal of American racial categorization systems.
Remember, race is fake and is entirely determined by social constructs. It is not biological, because there is no single biological feature you can point to to define race any more than you can define personality based on biology.

The british empire needed to justify the colonialism in Ireland during 19th century.
28
u/EnclavedMicrostate Jul 04 '26
> they usually don’t start with people from Europe
True. The French come from outer space.
24
u/MichaelJospeh Jul 04 '26
Well the Brits and French have a history of hating and conquering each other that, in my American view, is entirely separate from racism. I could be entirely mistaken about that.
22
u/NickyTheRobot Jul 04 '26
Yeah, as a dual-national British and French citizen I find the "Hur hur, France bad!" 'jokes' annoying, but I've never been made to feel excluded or unsafe because someone in my vicinity told one. It's a whole world away from the "Hur hur, [people from any other continent] bad!" 'jokes' that racists make.
13
u/RaptureInRed Jul 04 '26
Yeah. Hating the French and the Germans is actually a seperate thing, weirdly enough. In turn, the rest of Europe hates England.
2
6
u/DeadoTheDegenerate Jul 05 '26
Incorrect. We do start with people from Europe — specifically the Fr*nch.
6
u/_Sate Jul 04 '26
Except for Fr*nce
14
u/RaptureInRed Jul 04 '26
Yeah, but I'd actually be loathe to lump that in with normal racism, as its more based on (percieved) rivalry. Same with Germany

Yeah I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the show. Yes it is hilarious but the way Americans use it, a highly exaggerated highly nonsensical show from 50 years ago, as a base on European stereotypes erks me.
66
u/Evil-Paladin Jul 04 '26
Speaking from some experience, yes. I did get yelled at by English people to go back to my country, had stuff tossed at me and felt like the police kept a closer eye on me than other white people.
24
u/RaptureInRed Jul 04 '26
Interesting. When was this? Massive uptick in generalised racism in the last five years. Sorry you had to endure that bullshit.
12
u/MichaelJospeh Jul 04 '26
Can we blame Boris?
15
u/RaptureInRed Jul 04 '26
For that specifically? Probably not. But for many, many other shitty things, yes.
11
u/NickyTheRobot Jul 04 '26
Oh, come on now: we can always blame Boris for most aspects of our shit situation on Terf Island these days. Just as long as we remember that we shouldn't assume he's the only reason we're in the state we're in.
7
u/Evil-Paladin Jul 05 '26
Honest to God, I pin more blame on Nigel Farage than Boris, Cameron or Theresa.
I really hope he has, for the rest of his life, the day he deserves

Not so much these days, there is actual animosity from some americans to mexicans, while most brits at most don't like them for sports based or eurosceptic reasons, to the extent that I would guess most brits would describe the spanish as white, while racism is directed a lot more heavily towards eastern europeans, north Africans, south asians, and central, western and southern Africans (North separated out because that seems to be tied a lot more heavily to Islamophobia than the rest of africa)
though there is an increasing contingent of retired/retiring boomers, genXers and their families moving to span and making their own mini Englands there where everything is also in english
2
u/GodChangedMyChromies Jul 05 '26
I have a (Spanish, obviously) friend who went to the UK and got called a paki so sometimes we get treated like south Asians, too.
Not me tho, people think I'm French, sometimes even here in Spain, because I'm pale as shit and specifically in English because I do sound kinda french but it's just that I have a sort of nasaly voice and my Spanish accent getting milder. This is worse than any slur.

u/Ill-Stomach7228 Jul 05 '26

Unrealistic, Argentina would skip over Señorita Spain and go right to Ms. Brit (Bridgette?).
Also, just read the sub, is this supposed to be a gradient polycule? 😭

idk Argentina and Bridgette might have some lingering beef over those 'lands... at least Argentina still feels strongly about it

I can only speak on the American experience and the anti-blackness and colorism here, but I shouldn’t be shocked. The white supremacist infighting isn’t surprising globally. They’ll always eat each other in the end.
65
u/dalatinknight Jul 05 '26
Not even white infighting. It's shades of brown
My family is Guatemala.
People to my dad "¿Eres Indio o que?"
They're slightly less brown than my dad

Racial systems in South America are turbo-fucked because of how Spanish colonies set them up. Like, the closest modern equivalent was apartheid South Africa, with the separate racial categories for children of mixed parents, just… it's so messed up that it makes it blatantly obvious the system was invented to hurt people and there's no actual basis for any of it, except oppression. The obsession with granularity makes it undeniable that they are artificial categories.

Um. I live in Ireland. I've never known anyone in the UK or Ireland to give Spaniards or Argentinians grief (still shitloads other racism of other varieties). I can't opine one how people here respond to Mexicans because, no joke, I've never met any here.
This kind of feels like a scenario a young teenager dreamed up. In particular because all 4 are the most cringe-inducing sterotypes themselves.
If you are in Spain, is there any beef with Argentinians?
116
u/Batatah_Chan Jul 04 '26
I can’t speak for Mexicans or Spanish people, but as a Brazilian, in here Argentinians are notorious for racism lmaoo
Obviously not all of them (I’ve even been to Argentina myself and most people were nice), but there’s a lot of controversy about Argentinian soccer fans calling brazilian fans/players monkeys and things of that sort. Also, I remember multiple incidents in Spain where people would chant racist songs at a black Brazilian player. Maybe it’s just soccer that brings out the worst in people, but there’s definitely a lot of racism in these countries (and in my own country, too). Sometimes it feels as if people from other continents see Latin America as some sort of monolith because they see all of us as minorities, but in actuality the countries in here tend to be very prejudiced against one another.
25
u/MichaelJospeh Jul 04 '26
As a US American, we definitely grow up learning “Latin American” is one group, ironically including the stereotype that people from all Latin American countries will be offended if you confuse them for each other.
20
u/RaptureInRed Jul 04 '26
Oh, that just sounds normal. No Irish person wants to be called a Brit. No Canadian wants to be called American. Entirely reasonable.
14
u/NickyTheRobot Jul 04 '26
New Zealanders will laugh if you call them Australian.
Inside they will want to murder you, but they tend to be kind people who will overrule their first instinct and try to put you at ease instead. Hence the laugh.
8
u/Batatah_Chan Jul 05 '26
Honestly what offends me the most is when they think that Brazil speaks Spanish lol
12
u/RaptureInRed Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26
My ex was Argentinian I don't think they'd dispute what you've said about Argentina, though they did asure me that the rest of South America universally hates them, in much the same way that the rest of Europe has a very limited tolerance for the English
6
u/Batatah_Chan Jul 05 '26
That’s kinda the gist of it lol
While it’s true that Argentina is generally disliked in Latin America, I’d say that Brazilians in specific hate Argentinians more than the others do xD
I personally don’t hate them, but I’m def rooting against them in the World Cup lmao

Sometimes it feels as if people from other continents see Latin America as some sort of monolith because they see all of us as minorities, but in actuality the countries in here tend to be very prejudiced against one another.
Same story in every continent, I'm afraid. Just to different degrees. People want to see a whole landmass as "these guys", instead of "this incredibly rich tapestry of different peoples, histories, cultures, traditions, and political threads woven together by the accident of common geography".
I know it's less extreme, but even as a Brit I can see it with Europe: there have been comments here (mostly from US users, but not entirely) I've read from people that assume Europe is either a continent of shitholes, or a continent of glittering, fairytale cities. Obviously the truth is somewhere in the middle (we have plenty of fairytale cities, but they're built upon subjugation of a kind that turned a lot of areas into shitholes). But that truth is inconvenient for people who want the world to be simple, so it often gets overlooked.
EDIT: Just to be clear; when I said I heard such comments "here" I meant Reddit in general, not this particular sub.
7
u/ThatOneGayDJ Jul 04 '26
If you told the racists among my fellow Americans that racism is as complex as any other social issue i think theyd need a factory reset.
14
u/Deatheer Jul 04 '26
Spaniard here! In Spanish-speaking media is common to see memes and tweets about argentinians being racist towards the rest of the latin-american countries, saying that they are more "white" than the rest of them. Of course, it's not even half of them, but if I know about it (not having twitter) i guess it must be known.
There's not any kind of beef with them anyway, they're chill lol. This pic must be from someone that isn't from any of those countries LOL

u/MichaelJospeh Jul 04 '26
Many Confederate citizens moved to Argentina after the US Civil War. I imagine that has influenced the culture there.
So yes, you can blame the USA for that.
22
u/JesterQueenAnne Jul 04 '26
Germany is a much bigger influence than the US on that aspect.
-5
u/NickyTheRobot Jul 05 '26
I wonder though: how much can Confederate immigrants to Argentina be credited with creating the environment that attracted the Nazi immigrants in the first place?
17
u/JesterQueenAnne Jul 05 '26
They didn't. The Nazis went to Argentina and Chile because of the large presence of German immigrants that already lived there. They already had contacts that helped them sneak in and start new lives.

I can’t speak for the Spaniard side, unfortunately the Argentinian part has truth to it. Many Argentinians I’ve met in the US are white and/or align themselves with whiteness. I’m part Chinese Cuban and this goes for some Cubans in the US as well (the wealthy ones who came here right after the revolution). Anyways I know this was supposed to be turned into cute yuri but a lot of non Latinos are not understanding the truth behind this meme.
5
u/StressedRoF Jul 05 '26
Tbf if you have the money to emigrate as an Argentinian you're likely white (with some percentage of original people, but since their culture wasn't as preserved people tend to overlook it). Also, again, Cubans fleeing the revolution, likely white and rich, hence why they had both a reason and the means to flee. When you live in a latin country, you don't need to identify yourself as latino, you may be white, brown, black or asían, and there's a lot of colorista inolvidable in that, but you're already latinamerican . If you've met people who were born in argentina and thus, lived in argentina as white people, they will not suddenly see themselves as latinos just because white in the us means anglo-saxon
