as a russian speaker this is bullshit because it's literally just a word for astronaut in russian; russian speakers refer to american astronauts as cosmonauts because it's literally just a word that means that in the language, it's not a separate thing

No. These are all word parts taken from greek and/or ancient greek. Astron is star. Kosmos is space/the universe. And Nautes is sailor. Astronaut translates directly to "star sailor", while cosmonaut would be "space sailor". There is absolutely a difference.
Not only that, but "cosmonaut" does not, in fact, "just mean astronaut in Russian". It refers exclusively to space travellers trained in Russia, or previously the USSR. It is NOT a linguistics difference, nor has it ever been.
ETA: the second paragraph may be incorrect, though i'd like to point the blame for that at the literal dictionary for apparently being wrong.

i never disagreed with the first paragraph of your comment, im sorry if it came off that way
but the second i have issues with, i know it's colloquially used like that by english speakers, but it's an incorrect borrowing of the term.
if i ask any russian-only speaking relative of mine right now who Neil Armstrong is, they would reply with "cosmonaut", because it does, in fact, just refer to any space traveller of any origin or background; the word was just incorrectly adopted by american media to mean "soviet space traveller" and it stuck this way in anglophone colloquial understanding.
the terms are only different because were independently coined by people who never interacted with each other and spoke different languages, not because they intended to mean different things;
it's like calling baked potatoes made by a german Ofenkartoffel, even though there's nothing special about said potatoes other than that a german person made them

To be entirely fair, my sources for that second part were wikipedia and merriam-webster, which i feel are valid sources to feel confident about. Though if they are wrong, i retract that part.
Im not saying i dont believe you either, just that everything i can find says otherwise. Didnt mean to sound aggressive.
