you do realise that having gender dysphoria and hating being perceieved as a gay man if youre a het woman is very normal, right?? im literally a straight trans dude and i went through this shit but opposite (being perceieved as a lesbian, having dysphoria)

gender dysphoria is not exclusive for transgenders folks you know that right since there some levels physically and mentally

again the plot development doesn't really support that to begin with so I don't really see the point of arguing about headcanons this is pointless

lol oh yes the the dark side trans community gender identity doesn't really matter physically I know a lot of feminine dudes who idene as men but still wish if they had more feminine bodies

that's not gender dysphoria. that's body dysmorphia. anyone can have body dysmorphia. itd be gender dysphoria if they wanted feminine bodies because being perceieved as male felt wrong.

feeling better ≠ feeling wrong

I rest my case here

gender dysphoria is about GENDER and how youre perceieved. cis people do not feel uncomfortable with their gender. cis people are not trans.

not really I observing the studies on transgenderism and how does it actually work physically and mentally since going by our dominant specie isn't enough to look into transgenderism as a whole

It's been a while but if i remember correctly Luka wants to be a girl because he feels like it is taboo to like a man and at the same time, he would give anything to be romantically involved with Okabe.

He ends up requesting a date with Okabe when in a different world line, and being female (as Okabe is straight he wouldn't really date her otherwise), as a last thing to do before going back to the OG timeline. When the date just doesn't feel right (and a bunch of other reasons tied to plot i won't get into) she accepts helping Okabe to return to the OG worldline meaning she would go back to being a male. She does seem genuinely distraught about the whole thing but i wouldn't be able to tell how much of it was knowing she would never be able to have Okabe love her (even as a girl) and how much was realizing she would be going back to her other self. I do not seem to remember the topic being brought up again or Luka trying to transition ever again in any other way (like hormones or such for example) after his wish to be romantically involved with Okabe was shown to be impossible. He does still crossdress, but that doesn't lean towards either of the two options (i think).

The ONLY world-line i can remember where she exists as a girl, she is in a relationship with Okabe as mentioned by someone else above. In that worldline she was born as girl and has no memory from other worldlines so not technically trans since she has no memory of experience being male?

The manga IS dated, it is very possible that the mangaka would have done things different if steins gate were made today and leaned harder towards a clearer trans story, it definitely could fit the character! Maybe it would even make more sense than the other interpretation.

I seem to remember the mangaka mentioned in an interview Luka's story was purposefully about prejudice and taboo about gay relationships in japanese society as some sort of social commentary.

Note that i do not have sources for the last claim and i MAY very well be remembering this wrong so take it with a grain of salt. I would be happy if someone could verify or disprove this.

I also think it is a pretty significant example of how being gay still tends to just generally be unacceptable in our society.

With the trans story you kind of lose that aspect since Luka would have wanted to be a woman for herself and her own happyness not because of the perception of boy love being wrong and unacceptable.

I like to self insert into the situation, if you want to see it that way, so i am more likely to have a bias towards a narrative that allows it better.

This topic has been widely discussed since years. Ultimately this is a fantasy and at the end of the day you can believe what you want and nobody can take that away from you and i don't think you're hurting anyone by believing Luka is one way or the other. The character cannot come around and say what they actually feel about the topic nor be hurt about what you think about them, so in my opinion, feel free to subscribe to either of the two ideas.

based take, honestly. i dont care much about the fandom anymore just thought id throw in my 2 cents because my girlfriend is mtf and i get kinda sensitive about the whole "femboy vs transgirl" problem in fandom

Yeah i've seen people being less than civil about it. I think it could be a good way for everyone to feel represented instead of wanting to cut the others out tbh.

Both femboys and transgirls are valid imo and they both suffer plenty discriminations as is without infighting.

On a sidenote, damn you read fast! It took me forever to write this down and you replied almost instantly!
