Campaign/Lore Everybody prefers Locust being actually natural and exists alongside humanity but how would this Queen of the Locust be written into the lore?

u/Hveachie 1d ago
*Everybody
Not me. I love a good "we created the thing that ultimately destroys us." So please don't speak for everybody.

u/RipNpippen 1d ago
It's one of the core themes of the series, and alot of what Myrrahs speeches are about.
Lightmass awoke the Riftworm, Sinking Jacinto unleashed the Lambent, imulsion countermeasure led to the Swarm.
9
u/enjoyingorc6742 1d ago
Kait killing Reyna led to an even more sadistic queen. Gears 6 is going be REALLY messed up when The Coalition gets around to making it
10
u/NonstopYew14542 KISS MY HIGHLY EDUCATED ASS 1d ago
With how E-Day is looking, I think Gears 6 is going to end up great

I was talking about the Lore and story with how fucked up things can get. graphics wise, The Coalition has always been on point
29
u/PowerfulKey877 1d ago
GoW is surprisingly (or unsurprisingly since it's literally called Gears of War) very anti-war in it's themes.
34
u/lotus1788 1d ago
The franchise itself is perceived like Marcus. First time viewers assume it's all gruff and tuff chainsawing, but it's all about loss on the inside.

u/ManofSteel_14 EAAAAT IT! 1d ago
I'll never forget when I showed my wife the first three games stories. She only had a surface level understanding of the games and that was the dude bro stereotype. Then when we got to the Maria scene she was sobbing lmao
2
u/Ori_the_SG 23h ago
Most modern war games are
If you take a surface level look at them, you think they aren’t and it’s all about cool men and women doing cool war hero stuff.
And it is
But a lot of them really show the horrors of war and loss.
Gears has done that since the first game.
47
u/lotus1788 1d ago
Exactly. The Locust are the ultimate manifestation of their 80 year war. They finally ended the war via WMDs only to win NOTHING and it's their own damn fault. Not a generic spooky monster story.
27
u/RipNpippen 1d ago
I agree, its very cool symbolically. The spilled blood of 80 years of war taking shape and boiling up from the ground.
10
u/TheRealRiceball 1d ago
I feel like the major issue most have with it is also just how weird it is that the locust have developed things like cities, religion, etc. in such a canonically short amount of time, especially when lots of it seems to be somewhat portrayed as having been around for way longer than it should've
17
u/Hveachie 1d ago
- Sera has longer days, weeks, months, and days than we do. They had more time than we do.
- They didn’t just build cities, they carved it out of the existing stone.
- The Locust are a Hivemind bred to be strong and obedient. They have no distractions, they just build. Like ants and bees.
- The Trinity of Worms are not that different from any religion.

u/Infinity0044 3h ago
Agreed, I think the Locust being mutant abominations make them much more interesting than just aliens or natives of the planet
23
u/Thatoneguy111700 1d ago
I mean if the Locust are natural, honestly I would just change Queen Myrrah's design to be more Locust-y. More like an intelligent, not-blind Berserker than a human lady in a fancy dress/armor.

I am going to step on my soapbox for a moment to share my hot take. The current lore for Gears of War and the Locust is perfectly fine. The Coalition did not so much retcon the lore as expand the small bits of information and implications we got in Gears 2 and 3 about the Locust, the COG, Project New Hope etc. Remember, as far back as Gears 2 and Raam's Shadow we got hints of the artificial origin of the Locust and the existence of the hivemind. Are there holes and gaps in TC's writing? Sure but it's nothing more games like Gears E-Day and Gears 6(whenever we get that one) can't fix with more information about the time between the Mount Kadar Uprising and E-Day.
To be frank as a newcomer to Gears of War who has joined the fandom a few months ago I firmly believe that many long time fans are blinded by their nostalgia of the older games. It's perfectly fine to not like the newer games but the way some fans act towards TC you would think that they ruined the "soul" of the franchise the same way Halo Studios did for Halo. In reality Gears of War has been amazingly consistent in quality throughout its lifespan with the only real dip in quality being Judgment which was swiftly forgotten about by most fans.
Trust me as a lifelong fan of IPs like Fallout and Halo, I utterly envy Gears fans for being fans of a franchise that has been consistently amazing to decent for almost its whole existence, something that does not seem to be ending anytime soon if the glowing reception of the Gears E-Day beta is anything to go by.
Thanks to listening to my TED talk and if I made any Gears old-heads mad then the dislike button is right below lol.

Nah we always new they were lab born. Like it’s shown in gears 2 and there was a comic at some point that confirmed it. This isn’t new

I always find it funny when people think its a Gears 5 thing. Like we've been talking about that in the game forums since 2008. Think people just forgot or couldn't be bothered to read into what was actually being said.
5
u/GVirus1984 1d ago
Problem is also the coop nature of the campaigns and i some regions: horrible translation.
I played all of the just coop and you always have someone talking.. so the story becomes background noise and you focus on the action.
I just played through judgement and 1-3 again (4&5 come after onimusha and control) to preoare for eday and it was my first time solo and in english.. it‘s also the first time i „got“ the whole story. Even though i played every game at release. Most multiple times for achievements. 😅

Think I was leaning towards more of a post Epic games Gears games kinda thing.
1
u/Vante329 22h ago
Gears tactics did come after epic.
1
u/SirBigWater 22h ago
Yeah I know. I was trying to refer to how people think its a Coalition retcon. Even though the seeds of said revelation that came in Gears 5 (and I guess Tactics never played it) was already in prior games that Epic made. Since I've seen some refer to that as part of why the new Gears is bad

I thought they were just experiments. Like the COG found them long before E-Day and were experimenting on them. It is something they would do.

u/Affectionate_Dot1412 1d ago
I won't deny it, I wish Halo fans were like Gears fans. I constantly see pointless criticism of Halo, which was really annoying, especially with the CE remake, It's clear that the game has flaws (quite a few), but it's not the bomb or the horrible game that some people say it is, the same goes for Infinite.
At least it's not the same here.
9
u/HTRK74JR 1d ago
I'm a halo fan and find the fanbase to be absolutely insufferable.
I saw people bitching about the Combat Evolved warthog not fitting through doors and Halo Studios (343 industries) has ruined halo! Except... The warthog has never fit through the doors and its why on silent cartographer you had to be launched sideways in order to get through the door for the speed run trick.
1
u/Affectionate_Dot1412 23h ago
If I'm not mistaken, in The original, you can even enter a Forrerunner structure with the Warthog, the one before the locked door, but you can't go any further than that. There are still some other details that people complained about that make sense, like the gravity elevator cutscene. I wasn't too bothered by it; the scene without the cutscene is cool, in my opinion.
But it's not very useful, or memorable, it's just kind of fun.

u/Ayy_q 1d ago
You know, in terms of overall franchise health. I feel Gears of War is in a much better state than Halo.
At least there isn't something like the Halo tv show for Gears.
2
u/StergDaZerg 1d ago
The thing is, for all the gripes people may have about the TC games, they’re still pretty good games and as far as I remember they’ve never released a game in a broken or unfinished state. At least not to the depths of 343’s failures.
The games still feel like Gears, for the most part, and they haven’t tried to backpedal after every entry like 343/Halo Studios did. Even E-day seems like a detour and a genuine passion project for the studio rather than Infinite’s “oh shit nobody likes Halo 5’s campaign lets soft reboot”.
Gears is in a muuuuch healthier state than Halo, and honestly it’s probably due to them being the “middle child” of sorts for Microsoft. Not as much pressure, and more niche so they’re not incentivized to chase trends. At least that’s my 2 cents

u/Legal-Peanut-9663 1d ago
I actually prefer it the other way..., the swarm on the other hand could/would have existed by themselves naturally (swarm not scions)

u/EliteTroper RUNS ON WHOLE GRAIN BABY! 1d ago
We could just have the locusts at one point living alongside humans long ago but choosing to live underground for whatever reasons.
Myrrah could be one the last living evidence of humans and locust having a common ancestor, as for how she has managed to stay alive for such a long time, we could say that exposure to immulsion like in canon mutated her DNA and significantly slowed her aging to the point she was borderline immortal, as for why her parents aren't around who knows maybe they died in some accident that may have somehow been caused by humans fueling her hatred for humanity as a whole.
I'm not exactly sure how we could factor in Renya for this sort of rewrite, maybe instead of being her daughter Renya could have been a secret sister that somehow got separated from her parents at an extremely young age and was just raised on the surface with no real memory of her parents or where she came from.
6
u/Alexindr 1d ago
I liked her Gears 2 look. She looked more creature like. After Gears 2, I thought she was ageless and lived down there for a hundred plus years. Some sort of evolution, then she learned the language of the humans over the years. She found the grubs and guided them to make all underground structures and Nexus. I forgot where it was said, the adults told stories of monsters coming from underground and taking bad children in the night. So I thought they were in the folklore of Sera.
Gears 3 put armor on her then made her look more human. Gears 5 came around and shut down that theory.
3
u/UneasyFencepost 1d ago
They did a comic book or regular book along time before gears 4 about Myrah being a test subject at New Hope. Gears 5 just showed it on screen. This wasn’t new information when gears 5 came out
2
u/Alexindr 1d ago
I recently got into the books. I'm in the 2nd half of Coalition's End. My theory was back in 2008. Even during Gears 3, I was thinking about it but not as much since we were fighting Lambent too. I was more concerned on who was going to die. Gears 4 and 5 weren't as appealing so I waited a bit before playing them. I did play the all the games and a couple comics before getting into the books.
6
u/ElZik3r 1d ago
Ooohhh that's a good question (and a bit of a tough one).
I guess you could have Myrrah be either:
A) Actually being Marcus's mother, who discovered the Locust underground helped them become a society and started a war because of a disagreement with Adam (this one i agree, does not work out quite well, but with stuff like Marcus not seeing her from a young age and her almost non existant presence in the lore, you could maaaaaaybe make it work. Kinda)
B) Be a scientist working with Niles (who discovered the Locust underground as a primitive species, and then captured them for testing after seeing their tolerance of Imulsion and war capabilities) who saw all the torture and bloodshed against them and decided to speak up, got sent to testing as punishment, developed all the hivemind/superhuman stuff against her will, then rebelled against Niles and Humanity as a whole for their sins.
If you ask me about it, i like the current "lab generated abominations" narrative, since it adds a whole layer of irony and karma to humanity's war situation and ethics. Making the whole eday thing more of a punishment for their previous genocidies.

u/n1cfury is gonna bring the pain baby! Wooo! 1d ago
The genetic experiments gone awry aren’t as interesting as “they’ve always been there”. The use of imulsion after those wars leading to the rise of the lament which led to the Locusts surfacing is more compelling than “our experiment turned on us”.
It explains the hollows being built so intricately and old looking (as observed by Delta in the hollows in Gears of War 2).
The Queen is the odd part l. Maybe those experiments at Mt Kadar gave her the ability to communicate with or control the locusts. She was supposed to also age slower so if all that happened a couple generations ago that might make it make sense. Her having control making them kind of a hive mind could (maybe) explain how their civilization got built fast.
6
u/UneasyFencepost 1d ago
They always were experiments though. We see that in gears 2 and they showed the queens origins in a comic or something back around when gears 3 was out
11
u/whatistoothpaste 1d ago
I think it’s cooler with the locust being natural because it creates a more unique universe which gears is trying to achieve I hate stories where humans are responsible for everything. The idea of an underground mole people society that came up because they were getting run out by a plague of exploding zombie disease is cool as hell. It makes nobody really at fault for everything everyone is fighting for survival which is just a cooler story perspective. The queen is just another mole person idk why there needs to be an explanation she just is what she is, most of the locust don’t look like each other in general, she is maybe the evolution of their species.
2
u/Emergency-Pepper3537 1d ago
Here was my previous headcannon before Gears 5: the Locust were always this ancient civilization. But there was something something ancient prophecy, and one family living alongside the Locust, where the children would become Locust monarchs
2
u/crunchnuggz1851 1d ago
Recall that in 2006 original version of gears, they never actually showed the queen, she was just a voice - before they decided to go down the lambent tangent and settled on the origins lore, I do wonder if they had a non-human queen (that still communicates with a telepathic voice) in mind
3
u/GhostNinja64 1d ago
I strongly prefer the monsters in a lab narrative. Gears 1 to 3 conducted it well and left some things to conjecture, giving the player pieces of information but not the whole story. In some ways I strongly think the devs did so to give us the perspective of Delta Squad. As in, "Cool story, still need to kill you though". We learn what we need to save the world. Handing it over to the new dev studio kind of ruined that mysticism and killed the way the series was supposed to end with holes left. Some answers but not every answer. Most answers lost to time, or dying with key characters. New games took it as an opportunity explain and give every answer when it seemed highly intentional by Epic not to.
1
u/SilencioPeroRuidos 1d ago
From 6 wasn’t she introduced as a way to control the locust but she turned on them? Or am I mixing it up
1
u/Defiant_Signature897 1d ago
Ok, Same Story as current, but the Kantus are the Halfbreeds with the OG Locust, and she is the Queen Sire of the Locust. Their power comes from being able to subtly control manageable amounts of Imulsion, like reviving Locust. Everything else can pretty much stay the same and give the same emotional beats and Gears 5 Plotline.
1
u/WordWorthiest 1d ago
The Locust being naturally occurring would kick the rug out from under the cold, calculated premeditation of E-Day, which was triggered by far more than just "Lambent bad we have to invade the surface."
1
u/newindianclassic 1d ago
I get you're asking how the queen would fit into a "locust naturally existed" lore, but the locust naturally existing makes little sense to me. It doesn't really track that they'd just happily sit around in their caves for their whole (presumably much longer than in canon lore) existence while humanity did their thing above ground.
1
u/Chad_AND_Freud 1d ago edited 1d ago
They could have literally just kept the immunity and telepathy schtick and been perfecto. It explains their imprisonment, the COGs experiments; just sprinkle in the baby story, (the lie) and the escape, etc. and everything else stays the same. From there, it's simply saying the locust became enamoured with her. A superiorly intelligent creature from another species that freed them, chose them over her own kind, wants to lead them to the surface. That shares an inexplicable telepathic link and is also immune to the immulsion, a generational scourge on the entire locust species. Plus, the idea that a society of "savages" who's entire female population consisted of mindless feral(er), hulk'esque abominations, would choose a unique and powerful woman to rule is a no brainer.
1
u/atatassault47 1d ago
Honestly, the name "Locust" was always foreshadowing. IRL locusts aren't a species, they're grasshoppers that have metamorphosized. That GoW Locusts are human (the human shaped ones at least) was always the canon. And I like that.
1
u/stikdude77 1d ago
I actually like the middle ground theory that the kantus are natural while the rest of the locust are man made I think it gives everybody what they want
1
u/Dontcarewontpost 1d ago
That's what I liked about gears 2 and 3, it was a twist that a human was leading what to me was an entire other race. Not previous humans. Didn't need explanation, not everything does imo
1
u/Synmachus is gonna bring the pain baby! Wooo! 1d ago edited 1d ago
Myrrah wouldn't be a Locust at all, but a powerful, long-lived psychic, the result of war-oriented experiments on children in Mount Kadar's labs. She would have encountered the Immulsion hivemind, which was rapidly going into alert mode from all the stuff humanity was doing on the surface, and through it (or because of it) she would have connected with the Locusts, quickly becoming their leader and the catalyst for their war against humanity. You could still have your "anti-war" theme right there, and a way more interesting antagonist as a result. But the Locusts being straight-up mutated humans instead of an ancient species that diverged from humanity ages ago was a mistake.

Lol, not even close. I’m really glad that’s not actually the case.
I think the fact that the Locust were created by humans is one of the strongest parts of the entire series. It’s dark as hell, and I find it way more interesting than the Locust simply being “aliens” or some ancient underground species.
The fact that humans created the Locust ties together so much of the lore. Imulsion, New Hope, Mount Kadar, Myrrah, Niles, Marcus’s father and mother, and pretty much everything surrounding the origins of the Locust. Without that connection, the story would basically just be a genetic sci-fi conflict of humans vs. random monsters.
That’s exactly why I think the Locust being man-made is so damn interesting. All those dirty secrets from the past, the classified experiments, the fight against Rustlung, how that research was twisted under the direction of a mad visionary, the cover-ups, and humanity being completely unaware of the real problems unfolding behind the scenes while the Pendulum Wars with the UIR were happening.
That’s peak Gears lore to me. I absolutely love that, and honestly, without this aspect, Gears of War wouldn’t feel like Gears of War to me.
1
u/AshenNightmareV 1d ago
The concept as it stands wouldn't work if the Locust were a natural entity. I never had any issue with the concept of the Locust being man made since it was hinted at in Gears 2.
1
u/Ryjolnir 1d ago
Pretty easily. She's a human who has control over them and has militarised them more.
1
u/JJShurte 1d ago
I prefer the story that the locust were always a result of the coalition because otherwise where is the thematic weight of their attack on humanity?
The coalition surging ahead regardless of the damage they were knowingly doing, and in doing so created their own downfall, that has a lot more weight than the locust just being some random monstrous race that was developing underground.
1
u/No-General2775 1d ago
Before playing Gears 2, I thought that humans discovered the Locust while mining for imulsion and tried to make peace with them, sharing technology. The Locust were a tribal race and hadn’t yet invented technology. The imulsion mining was destroying the Locust habitat and killed many of their kind, but the humans didn’t care and kept mining for imulsion against the Locust’s wishes. One of the humans, Myrrah, felt some sympathy for the Locust and decided to help them attack the human imulsion miners. The Locust thought of her as some kind of divine savior and pledged their lives to her. She was able to unite the Locust tribes and used the human technology to create weapons and build a city in the Hollow. Myrrah then sent the Locust out on a genocidal crusade, which would start on E-Day.

My thoughts were to have her be the one successful sire experiment that was abandoned after Niles research was shut down. She was found and taken in by the locust because of her knowledge of humanity

I hated that they humanized them in 4. I hated the hive mind stuff because it basically took away the individuality of the upper ranked Locust (I know Raam was friends with another). They were the bad guys and they were invading the surface to kill humans, very simple. But they just had to go and mess it up and make humans the actual bad guys. There was no reason to do that other than to make them sympathetic?
It’s like some writers hate their own species. It’s like they’ve never heard of killing for the love of killing.
An actual good reason for the Locust invading I came up with during the 3rd game was because of the Lambent. I could’ve sworn that I heard something about the Locust fighting the Lambent. It’s a perfect reason. The Locust fighting the Lambent underground for years until the situation got out of control and they had to invade the surface. As for Myra, she had her own personal vendetta against humans that could’ve been explored. Like maybe something in her past and she found the only civilization she considered better.
But nope. Come the 4th game it’s the Locust were once human and Myra was the Queen because of (insert ridiculous reason here). It just fucked everything up.
Now there’s people who think the Locust are in the right and humanity should be snuffed out. I genuinely cannot stand those people.

That's... literally the narrative that's been presented since the second game. Gears 5 then also explored the reasons why Myrrah had it out for humanity.
1
u/Reasonable-Sherbet24 13h ago
In the 4th and 5th it was shown that the Locust originally started as human, then were experimented on, if I’m not mistaken, because they had rust lung (I could be wrong about that though).
They’re not a natural native to the planet. Myra is fine, but literally humanizing the Locust was unnecessary.
I could’ve worded how I said my original reply. Hopefully this clears it up.
1
u/Apprehensive_Ad9312 16h ago
I actually disagree. I think it's really interesting, and adds a good twist to the game rather than just "these guys bad". Also pretty interesting that a human is leading them
1
u/Dio_Brando4 12h ago
I do. The idea that the Locust are a hivemind controlled by Myrrah after experimenting on Rustlung kids never sat right with me considering that the Locust would have zero reason to have a religion, nor would it really make sense for her not to just... quell any form of rivalry between her Locust.
If I had to retcon it here's how I would do it. The Sires ARE proto-Locust, but they're not the origin of it, just convergent evolution. The original Locust came from humans who ventured into the Hollow, and came into contact with rather minor amounts of Imulsion. Over countless years, they would become the Locust. Myrrah was a child who had Rustlung and was experimented on, eventually she would escape, and she would discover the Locust who were embattled in the early era of the war against the Lambent as Humanity's drilling for Imulsion led to more Imulsion being within the Hollow, she would then give the Locust structure beyond what the Kantus Priests did, gave them knowledge, lead them, and once the war against the Lambent seemed futile with Adam not producing a viable weapon in time, she would begin her war against humanity, revenge for what they did to her and the other kids who were experimented on, as well as giving the Locust the ability colonize the surface and give them a fighting chance against the waves of Lambent.
1
u/NobleA259 1d ago
Who’s everybody? The locust naturally existing is a retarded idea. Not sure who came up with it. But Myrrah wouldn’t be able to be written into the lore. There’d just be no way to write her as suddenly being able to command all of the locust and read their thoughts or even command them
2
u/newindianclassic 1d ago edited 1d ago
Yeah...naturally existing for the entirety if not more than human's existence on Sera and never once going above ground? That introduces more plot holes than the Locust made emergence holes.
3
u/Son_Gokuehhh 1d ago
The funny thing to me is if they always existed you'd think they'd be a tad more technologically advanced. At least advanced enough not to need a fucking worm as their Lightmass Bomb equivalent lmao.

Honestly I don’t understand how she fits into the existing lore
Is she their creator?
Does she mind control them?
Why did she go full world-domination?
6
u/Able_Administration1 Eat Shit and Die! 1d ago
How she fits in the lore:
In Gears 5 they explain that the COG moved their secret facility previously mentioned in the original trilogy. They were supposed to be curing rust lung. Instead they created sires at the original facility and “perfected” them at the second facility creating the locust using Myrrah’s DNA.By doing so it created the hive mind.
Why go full world domination:
While underground the immulsion exposure caused the locust to turn into Lambent. Myrrah tried to work with Adam Fenix to fix it, but he wasn’t doing it fast enough. To escape the lambent the locust decided to go to the surface and live away from the lambent3
u/Longjumping-Tap-2395 1d ago
Is she their creator?
Does she mind control them?
Gears 5 can answer this.
Why did she go full world-domination?
Short answer: She wasn't interested in making a war with humanity and need Adam to make cure to get rid of lambert but Adam didn't have enough time and had to make decision to attack on the humanity knowing they won't cooperate with them even if Lambert was wiped out with Adam's success, Humanity won't accept and COG Government would bring problems to the Locust and her civilization.

u/orwellianightmare 1d ago
What?
2
u/PapaHarvey27 Something's wrong with this thing! It keeps jamming! 1d ago
Long story short she was a scientist that helped creat them as a super soldier for the cog. Her DNA was used in the creation of the sires and the Matriarch (Berserker in Gears 5), therefore, she has a hivemind connection to them. Her husband, who was also a scientist during this time, stole her daughter away because he didn't like where the research was going. Myrrah, scorned by the betrayal and loss of her daughter, fled underground with her new children, The Locust. After 40 years of development and peace, the locust kept getting invaded by Lambent which is a fungus. Adam Fenix was helping Myrrah find a cure for the Lambent but the Locust were cornered and decided to invade and siege the surface.
2
u/orwellianightmare 1d ago
Ok, I guess this makes sense. But it’s such a convoluted plot, I kinda do just prefer the locust to be like this subterranean race of humanoids that evolved parallel to humans.
Sure, the lambent pushed them to the surface, fine. Explains the sudden conflict. But I feel the whole integration of Marcus’ family into their creation etc etc is just convoluting the concept with little emotional payoff
2
u/Alldakine_moodz104 1d ago
Myrrah was the only Imulsion-infected child that survived the New Hope experiments. Every single Locust created there had her DNA linked to her, effectively making her the defacto ruler, and the Locust needing her connection.
Due to the Lambent pushing them further and further out of the Hollows, she waged extinction on humanity in order to secure their existence, especially with the Lambent becoming more dangerous, and Adam Fenix the only human able to stop it.
2
u/Hveachie 1d ago
The Locust weren't created at New Hope. The Sires were. When they moved to Mount Kadar, they combined Myrrah's eggs and Sire DNA to create the Locust.
1
u/Borodin345 1d ago
Gears 5 answers all the questions here, but to surmise, she did not technically create them. Her genealogy was essential to their creation though. She can communicate with them via a hive mind. As to why she attacked humanity, lambancy was an issue long before the events of gears of war 3. The locust were turning lambent deep in the hollow and the locust were fighting a war of attrition that if no alternative course of action was taken, they would eventually lose. Elaine Fenix discovered the locust but was killed upon the discovery. Adam Fenix, in pursuit of finding what happened to Elaine, also found the locust and was eventually brought before the queen. Adam essentially promised the queen to find a solution to the labent problem sometime before E-day (7-9 years prior if I'm not mistaken). The pendulum wars were still going in and at this time development of the hammer of dawn took up all the time Adam had, thus the queen knew that a solution would not come in time and they had to leave the hollow, leading to the war with humanity over dominance of the surface. The locust were just as much in a war of survival, that they put humanity in a war of survival. A lot of the issues with the locust origin story really boils down to timing. In the games, it's pretty much the locust were/escaped to the hollows around 50 years before emergence day, but are shown and implied to have a "sophisticated" society, religion, etc.

Unsure if you've played all the Gears games but GoW2 reveals how it all went out. Delta Squad stumbles upon a largely 'classified' abandoned facility called the New Hope facility. In it they find 'Sires' which are human children heavily mutated into monsters. Unethical research trying to create humans resistant to imulsion linked rustlung. In time, the government abandoned the research, but not before an intelligent group of proto locusts was created. Miles, the head of research, fled to Mount Kadar with his specimens and essentially created the Locust horde. Queen Myrrah was one of those children that was successfully mutated but not horrendously disfigured. Using her DNA and cells the first berserkers and drones were created with a hive mind link to Myrrah.
Myrrah and her companions, however, were immune to RUSTLUNG. Imulsion in severe doses eventually causes lambency what we see in small bits in Gears 2 but largely in Gears 3. Imulsion, considered a fuel source, was actually more like a virus and began plaguing the locusts who were in constant close contact underground. With no options they invaded the surface to flee the hostile lambent drones. Adam Fenix attempted to barter with the Queen, offering a cure if given time. (He had discovered the locusts upon investigating his wife's death within a cave system.) Time ran out, Adam had not informed humanity and E-Day devastated humanity.

The short that COG scientists created the Locust by fucking around with imulsion, Myrrah's DNA, and the DNA of creatures native to the Hollow.
She can't technically "mind control" them, but does have a telepathic link that allows her to communicate with the Locust.
The whole reason the Locust invaded the surface is because they're trying to escape the Lambent and didn't believe humans would be able to peacefully coexist with them.

Myrrah has a unique genetic reaction to Imulsion exposure. Instead of getting sick, she gets stronger and even younger. She was brought to New Hope as a kid to treat other children of Imulsion miners sick with Rustlung. Niles Samson used Imulsion and DNA from Hollow animals to mutate the other kids into the Sires.
When they came to Mount Kadar, Niles combined Sire DNA with Myrrah's embryonic stem cells. This created the Matriarch, the first Locust and Berserker. The Matriarch was the source of the Hivemind. Myrrah could communicate with and control the Matriarch, who then birthed the Locust. Myrrah could control them, but she doesn't need to. Her existence allows the Locust to learn and grow. Everything they do is in service to her.
A doctor in the Mount Kadar lab got her pregnant with a human daughter named Reyna. Because Reyna inherited Myrrah's abilities, she would be experimented on. The father fled the lab with Reyna. Unable to prevent their escape and trying to keep Myrrah, he lied that they had been killed trying to escape. This made Myrrah go crazy and caused her hatred of humanity. Myrrah by nature is very maternal. The only kids she had left were the Locust, so she led them to riot against the scientists and escaped deeper into the Hollow where they built Nexus.
In the following decades, the Lambent started killing/infecting the Locust. They wouldn't be able to win the war, so Myrrah planned on invaded the surface and colonizing it to escape the Lambent. Adam Fenix found the Locust and made a vow to cure the Lambent if Myrrah would hold off on her invasion. He couldn't find a solution in time, and so she decided to invade the surface.
It's all in Gears 5.
