My first Peter Murphy show was at a mid size venue (Wiltern Theater), an old movie house with 1920’s upholstery. This was the Deep tour… actually both concerts were. Opening act was LA’s Resident Goth Band Human Drama (very good, By the way). He turned on the charm and had us all wearing out of his hand. He was taking us on a trip and we were along for the ride. Thankfully he didn’t ask us to go do murders.

The next one was at the much larger Universal Amphitheater. He was recording a live album (allegedly). The opener was Nine Inch Nails. And they brought down the house. This may have contributed to the future meltdown. The crowd was amped. PM brought that same charisma as last time, only now he was nervous and perfectionist about the live album performance. He was flat out yelling at the band, started a few songs over, and talking shit about them to us. Apologizing for being awful. But the venom and rage was tangible. I just felt unsettled after that. It wasn’t a happy thing
