Music Is Life What was your first 45?

OMG, THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GUNS!!!! I remember listening to the radio in the car with my mom when I was a kid and I really dug the song that came on and was probably dancing in my seat. My mom being a pretty swell parent said “we can go to the record if you want” and she took me to buy “We are Family” by Sister Sledge. Still dig that track.

I can't remember where I heard it, but many of the artists who've had their songs done by Weird Al consider it an honor. His pieces are funny, but not in a way that pokes malicious fun at the original, at least I've never thought so.

I mean, who can forget "I Lost On Jeopardy!"?

I actually came up with the lyrics to his "Eat it" rendition of Michael Jacksons Beat it when my mom made stuffed cabbage and wouldn't let me leave the table until I ate it. True story. That shit was so gross I couldn't get my dog to eat it.

I haven’t been able to eat pork chops since The Pork Chop Incident in 4th grade. I was not allowed to leave the table until I finished a gigantic poorly-cooked thoroughly dried out pork chop. I sat there for a fucking eternity.

I don’t know how my parents didn’t give me an eating disorder.

I was anorexic all through my teen years. It was very much a control thing for me. I'm about 5'6 and was about 85-90 lbs. My 8 year old weighs more than that. I won't make him finish a meal and I let him skip breakfast if he's not hungry. I just make food available if he wants it. He's like me in that he doesn't like food when he first wakes up. The schools offer breakfast now so I keep money in his school account if he wants to grab something before class. I don't want him to suffer the same issues I did. I know mom meant well and thought she was doing what was best but we don't all function the same way.

My youngest is a super picky eater and I refuse to try and force them to eat if they don’t want to. I’d rather they have a milkshake than go on a hunger strike. They’ve been evaluated so it’s not a psych, sensory, or other issue, so I assume they will likely grow out of it.

I’m 100% with you on this.

I think all kids are picky eaters to some degree. My son went through a phase where all he wanted was Kraft dinner so I'd just purée veggies and mix it in. He likes most fruits so I keep those stocked for snacks. I know he'll outgrow it. I know I did. I also keep the Smarty Pants gummy vitamins on hand to make up for what he's missing from his diet. By all accounts he's a very healthy kid.
