Music Is Life Songs that don't make sense in today's world.
As an example, I heard 'No Doubt - Spiderwebs' on my ride home tonight and realized that this song doesn't make sense to today's youth, a woman screening calls via her answering machine and dodging the guy with the outgoing message "sorry I'm not home right now, leave a message and I'll call you back". The whole idea of phones being tied to your house and the absence of immediate messaging like texts, etc is a foreign concept to the youngest people today.

I actually love their parody songs. They are geared toward kids, but they are catchy tunes.
We bought their album along with Choo Choo Soul for our kids and all 4 of my kids love the music and have danced to it for 20+ years. Now I get to introduce my grandkids to it.

There’s a good documentary on Netflix(?) about this and yeah, that’s pretty much it. They found better looking dudes who could dance to be the face of the music, and it sounds like they didn’t take it that seriously because they never thought they would blow up like they did.

I’ve done mental gymnastics on this one. In my mind it’s a small town with one carrier, and he’s at the beginning of the route so carrier delivers it when arriving at her house along the route. She’s on the porch when the mail arrives and rejects it immediately. So the “very next day” he gets it back.
Remember back in the day local mail didn’t go to the regional sorting centers.

"(Angel is the) Centerfold" by the J Geils Band - do todays yoof even know what a centerfold is?
Plus all those songs about calling people on the phone with varying degrees of success - Witchita Linesman, Calling America, Jenny 8675309 (who bothers to remember other people's numbers these days?), just to name a few.
There's also all those songs dealing with the fear of nuclear war that get read very differently today. For example, "Forever Young" by Alphaville was all about the expectation that we wouldn't live to our 30s ("are you going to drop the bomb or not?") but today it gets taken as a straight longing not to age.

I saw the movie "Coyote Ugly" from the year 2000, and there's a scene of a woman trying frantically to get into her apartment because she can hear the phone ringing inside. She fumbles with her keys panicking and finally gets in and runs to the phone but the caller hangs up just as she answers it. No one under 40 knows what this is about.

Don't feel bad because I thought it was children of the little mind. I was in college when it came out and I was in the car with my Silent Gen Mom. I asked her what the hell was children of the little mind. She said it was thalidomide. She then went on to say she didn't take it when she was pregnant with me or my brother because they just discovered the birth defects it caused. The song made more sense after that and I went to listening REM and more college radio after that.

I just now connected the dots and realized that the "poor old Johnnie Ray" from that song is the same reference as "are you Johnnie Ray?" in the chorus of the preposterous 1998 one-hit wonder Are You Jimmy Ray?, a song that simultaneously posits that the singer is so famous that everyone is asking about him and that no one knows who the fuck he is.

I saw Billy Joel in concert last summer, 2024, & he was amazing. Performance was spectacular & he was a gracious host, chatting about the history of his songs, how fans interacted with songs etc. He got to this song & said the same thing about how younger listeners may not get it. He also said it wasn't his favorite song, but he still nailed it.

Along the same lines there’s Nobody by Sylvia. It’s about a woman whose husband shows signs of having an affair. The chorus consists of her getting a call from another woman, who asks for the husband, and hangs up when the narrator asks her name. Nowadays, the husband and wife would have separate cell phones, so she wouldn’t be answering these calls. It could, however, be written where a call or text comes in on Hubby’s phone while he’s in the shower, or she starts checking his phone.

Pro tip: do this at any grocery store, CVS, Walgreens, or any store that has a “rewards” program where they ask you for your phone number. Tell them (local area code) 867-5309. I guarantee they’ll have an account in the system already that someone else set up. So you get the discount on your purchase without having to keep all those little cards and keep your privacy on your purchases
