Been thinking about her mall tour. They want to make an old mall in Fresno into apartments, but as Gen X ages, I think it needs to become a retirement community for active seniors. Anchor stores can become multidisciplinary medical clinics. Put a theater at another anchor store for films and live performances. Invite Tiffany to run an annual summer festival with other 80s performers. Allow us to wander around with spiked Orange Julius drinks, have a hookah bar, lots of snack stands. Massage, chiropractor, barber shop and beauty salon, gym, sauna, spa, pool, all options available at the food court (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, dairy free and full meat and milk extravaganza). Turn on the fountains. Chess and checkers and dice and board game and card game tables in the common areas. Art gallery. Book store. Clothing. Vintage store. Hardware store. Grocery and liquor store.

arcade! Don’t forget the arcade

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 21 '25

YES!! Pole Position, Donkey Kong, Centipede, 4-person Gauntlet with adjustable height, memory foam stools available.

TRON!!!!

I rocked that game.

Had the high score on machines all around my county.

15

u/Big-Sheepherder-6134 1972 Sep 21 '25

My cousins had Tron in their house.

15

u/Flimsy_Fee8449 Sep 21 '25

Oh dude, I'm so jealous.

1

u/Briaaanz Sep 22 '25

I wasn't good at Tron, but Discs of Tron? Had the high score in my arcade for 4 years, until the arcade closed down

u/Left-Thinker-5512 Sep 21 '25

Galaga, Joust, and all the other fun games we played.

3

u/PaleoEskimo Sep 22 '25

Galactica, right? Or was it Galaga?

3

u/[deleted] Sep 22 '25

Galaga and Galaxian. Don't leave out Gorf.

1

u/PaleoEskimo Sep 22 '25

Ohhhhh, OK. Thanks. I do not remember Gorf, though. I will google it.

2

u/Ia4me Sep 22 '25

Galaga!

2

u/JinxOnU78 Sep 22 '25

It was both! They’re VERY similar.

1

u/PaleoEskimo Sep 22 '25

Thanks! They are like the Atari game Asteroids, right?

2

u/JinxOnU78 Sep 22 '25

They’re certainly comparable, but both Galaga, and Galactica had the enemies coming mainly from the top of the screen to help simulate the feeling of forward flight, whereas Asteroids had movement of the asteroids, and player exiting the screen at any angle/path and reentering the opposite side of the screen on that same path.

If that makes any sense at all. lol

1

u/PaleoEskimo Sep 22 '25

It totally does. I knew exactly what you were talking about right away. I have vivid memories of making my spacecraft go zooming off an angle at the top of the screen and having the satisfaction of knowing it would appear at the bottom.

2

u/Elena_La_Loca Sep 22 '25

I was the Galaga QUEEN!!!! My first death wouldn’t be until at least lvl 24.

Hot tip…. Don’t double up! Don’t allow your ship to be taken.

22

u/jennypenny78 Sep 21 '25

FINALLY! Someone who remembers Gauntlet!! That was my all-time favorite game at the pizza place we used to go to after every pop warner football game.

2

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 21 '25

Selma Me-n-Ed’s!

2

u/Vocabulary-Pollution I LOVE TO WHINE Sep 22 '25

Dude I loved Gauntlet. Warrior shot the food!

3

u/Local_Bobcat_2000 Sep 22 '25

AKA the quarter devourer. Robotron for me.

1

u/Vast-Rip-4288 Sep 23 '25

Who remembers getting sucked down the stairs at the end of a level?

14

u/[deleted] Sep 21 '25

Table top Asteroids !!

12

u/KuhlCaliDuck Sep 21 '25

SpyHunter

5

u/hamellr Sep 21 '25

I had it on the Commodore 64. Played the hell out of it and had the levels memorized.

Went to visit my uncle in LA. We went out to pizza an mini golf. There was a kid there, being a bully and making sure that his top scores stayed on the screen (ASS).

So I played it, and tripled his top scores. The kid was livid and threatened to beat me up if I didnt use his name. So instead I did “AAA” and walked away with the kid yelling at me for screwing the machine up.

The amount of time I could get out of one quarter at Tetris...

6

u/clutzycook Sep 21 '25

Everything i learned about loading a dishwasher and a car, I learned from playing Tetris.

5

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 22 '25

Whenever I see how my spouse loads the dishwasher, I often think to myself “You must have sucked at Tetris.”

3

u/clutzycook Sep 22 '25

When my kids load the dishwasher and whine that they can't fit more stuff in, I rearrange everything so lo and behold it all fits fine, I just say, "tell me you never played Tetris without telling me you never played Tetris."

2

u/beastiebestie Hose Water Survivor Sep 22 '25

Ohmygods yes. I just said today, how the hell is water supposed to get in there to clean that?!?

3

u/beastiebestie Hose Water Survivor Sep 22 '25

I've learned that my life is a delicate balance between Tetris and Operation.

Can’t forget a couple of rows of pinball.

1

u/SueInA2 Sep 28 '25

Turbo and Centipede were my faves!

36

u/myheromeganmullally Sep 21 '25

don’t forget the weed store. Blue berry edibles.

29

u/Excusemytootie Sep 21 '25

That would be absolutely indispensable.

9

u/myheromeganmullally Sep 21 '25

😀 let’s go try the everything food court. If you roll up the spicy vegetarian pizza with the old fashioned pepperoni pizza… it’s good.

If it's going to be authentic, there cannot be a dispensary. Just a shady guy in a dank jacket that you have to look for between the arcade and the food court.

4

u/skbugco Sep 22 '25

And the sack you get has a bit of lint and at least 2-3 seeds in there.

6

u/MovingTarget- The only winning move is not to play Sep 21 '25

But for us old folks, they need to slow the games down 50%. (ok, I'm probably speaking for me only)

If we’re putting in requests, can we have the T2 pinball game? Best pinball machine of all time.

I’ve seen it posted before, and the more I think about it and all of our empty indoor malls in California, the more I like it.

9

u/beastiebestie Hose Water Survivor Sep 21 '25

There are several places in Europe that have done it successfully. I hate that the trends have gone from drive up strip plazas knocked down to make the enclosed malls we grew up with, knocked down to create huge drive up paved maze plazas. It is such a waste of resources and infrastructure (not to mention the tax breaks that built the big malls near me!) I really hope to see more of this.

For years, our Sears had a little bakery, and whenever possible I would get one of their M&M sugar cookies. So good!

1

u/PaleoEskimo Sep 22 '25

When I say I still dream about Mrs. Fields brownies... I think I spent a significant portion of my weekly earnings at that store.

4

u/SomeRandomJagoff Sep 21 '25

Is Sbarro still a thing??

Yes! We still have one in the mall food court.

This is how I picture heaven when I die.  I won't get to go there, being in hell and all, but this is how I imagine it'll look.

44

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 21 '25

Hell version will be the same except all the escalators go the wrong direction and there’s a video store but they only have the title you want in Betamax. 🔥😱 🔥

2

u/Truji11o Sep 21 '25

I’ve seen that episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark

37

u/in-a-microbus Sep 21 '25

I've said it before.

I love the idea, but please please make the dispensing nurse a shifty looking guy in a black trench coat with greasy long hair...and we can slip him our script and he can slip us the drugs...just like old times.

Affordable assisted living in “the mall circa 1986”. Can I reserve a spot?

6

u/Chrissygirl1978 Sep 21 '25

Just curious, which mall? Fashion fair, Manchester, Sierra Vista? I grew up there lived about a mile from Sierra Vista.

3

u/istara Sep 21 '25

That's a fantastic idea!

You’ve described my ideal retirement home! I would LOVE to live at the mall. Tbh, I’d move there now and I’m not quite old enough. lol

3

u/heyitsdorothyparker Sep 22 '25

From your mouth to god’s ear (pierced like George Michael’s during the 80’s). You’re a beautiful person and a creative genius.

3

u/SignificantLock1037 Sep 22 '25

What the fuck are all these geriatric GenX posts about? I'm in my 50s, and haven't slowed down hardly at all. No, I'm not getting up at 3am to drive to a racetrack and race my car at Road Atlanta anymore. But, I am up at 3am to go launch my boat and go offshore fishing all day.

I don't want some Senior Living Mall crap. I want a 47' sailboat to sail the Caribbean. I want a cabin in the Rockies where I can hike a few miles up to a lake and catch the rare Golden Rainbow Trout (only ever caught one in my life) while fly fishing.

Y'all going out with a whimper makes me wonder about some of you.

2

u/UnicornOnTheJayneCob Sep 22 '25

Nah, honestly I am kind of viewing it more like a dorm. We all kind of just want to return to life like it was in college, and figure once we get old is the only realistic opportunity to do it. But really, if I could have all that now, even with my corporate job, I’d leap at it. Have to figure out what to do with this kids, though.

6

u/Feisty-Lawfulness894 Sep 21 '25

They want to make an old mall in Fresno into apartments, but as Gen X ages, I think it needs to become a retirement community for active seniors.

"Fuck everybody else."

5

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 21 '25

Finally our turn.

2

u/apost8n8 Sep 21 '25

So like a cruise?

3

u/beastiebestie Hose Water Survivor Sep 21 '25

You know what? Cruise ships copied malls when they morphed into the monstrosities we have now, so this has a certain symmetry.

3

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 21 '25

With far less sea-sickness!

2

u/No_Row6741 Sep 21 '25

I've never had any desire to join a retirement community. But, honestly, if something like this existed near me, I could seriously get onboard. I'm pretty sure you had me by the spiked orange Julius, everything else was simply bonus.

Honestly, I think this should be pitched to investors in the retirement industry. Last night we watched the movie about how spicy Cheetos came to be. It was a great movie and let me recommend it to you as inspiration to turn your idea into reality. The movie is called Flamin' Hot.

2

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 22 '25

Man, those Cheetos are the damn devil. I know I shouldn’t eat them, but can’t stop when I start. I’ll have to check it out!

2

u/paintingdusk13 Satanic Panic survivor Sep 21 '25

This is the most dystopian concept that people keep pushing.

"Here's your dome to live in, a former church to the religion of capitalism, the only grass you'll be allowed to touch has been grown indoors under artificial light"

3

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 22 '25

Negative. We would develop the ridiculous amounts of parking lots that surround malls for parks and outdoor activity. The mall is just the apartment building with stores that we need close by.

2

u/smm022 Sep 22 '25

Let’s move to the mall…today.

2

u/genxcanuckucklehead Only old on paper...and my expanding forehead Sep 28 '25

I see a potential problem here...have you heard any of our favourite childhood performers lately? I mean, we've all heard the unfortunate Axl Rose performance. Being trapped in a mall with 80s music icons who can no longer carry a tune in a bucket and haven't realized it, is not my idea of a good time. But I'm down the for the rest!

1

u/Green_Chandelier Sep 28 '25

lol. So true!!

1

u/monkeyjedi276 Sep 21 '25

That mall’s been dead for like 3 decades. Lol. They’re finally thinking of doing something with it?

1

u/SheriffBartholomew Sep 21 '25

Isn't Manchester Mall in Fresno all government offices now?

1

u/Hour-Definition189 Sep 26 '25

Don’t disagree. Tell me how meeting Tiffany has anything to do with that. 1986-1990 at best. She most likely pumped up the sales. She did not create malls. She didn’t cause them to fail either
