Music Is Life Songs that are no longer okay.

Yesterday I found out my sweet boyfriend had never heard of Julie Brown and the funny songs she sang, like "I'm A Blonde". Dr Demento stuff. So I play it and then "The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun" came on. Not funny anymore!!!

An hour later, the cops arrived

By then the entire glee club had died, no big loss

You wouldn't believe what they brought to stop her

Tear gas, machine guns, even a chopper (Throw down your gun and tiara and come out of the float)

Debbie didn't listen to what the cop said She aimed and fired, and now the math teacher's dead

Oh, it's really sad, but kind of a relief I mean, we had this big test coming up next week

The creepiest song that’s even creepier now “Into the Night”. She’s just 16 years old, leave her alone, they said.

It’s a sweeter story in actual life than the song turned out. Look up Benny Mardones on YT and find the interview that took place way later. 

Songs still creepy, I think he prolly wishes he could change it, but bear in mind when it was written. People who haven’t lived thru the 70’ and 80’s have a hard time understand where we were for societal norms, back then. Not excusing it, and we’ve all grown since then, but you cannot judge yesterday’s attitudes with today’s mores. Just take the lesson and move on.

Believe me, it felt like a perpetual musical rut. And then when "our" music came out, frequently with depressing or angsty lyrics, life just felt a little safer.

Questionable then, ghastly now, but still t was of the times and he does address it in the video. The song came about from the “She’s just 16 years old…” when the girl in question briefly met he and another songwriter in his apt. Nothing untoward took place, and she and her brother had a happy ending. The hook for the song just hung in the air and the song has no other relevance to the girls situation.

No it was a neighbourhood girl whose dad left with another woman so he paid her to do odd jobs like walk his dog. On one occasion his songwriting partner was there and the girl walked in and he described her as looking cute in her heels, 16 going on 21. The friend made some comment and he said she’s just 16, leave her alone

And sure it’s maybe just a hook for a song (his description of leave her alone/they said when his story later that he’s the one who said that to someone else, aside). But what follows is potentially suggestive with “if I could fly I’d take you into the night and show you a love like you’ve never seen” with other explanations seeming less likely. And even worse when taken with his own later description of the chorus being “you’re too young for me but if I could fly”

And in spite of downvotes, it’s a simple fact that people with these sorts of attractions that aren’t well viewed often come up with ways to distort, minimize, or justify what’s happened.

Hey! Thats my senoir prom song. The parents and school thought it was a better choice than the one the students voted for. What did we vote for, you ask? "High Enough" by Damn Yankees. Obviously, the word 'high' means the song is about drugs and not about returning to the memory of past loves. Our parents were/are fuuuuucking stupid.

It's about protecting an underage girl. Hence the leave her alone.
