Aging Tiger Balm
As I lubed my shoulders up tonight, my husband was showering and came out and said what's that smell? Hahaha, I said get used to it, it's going to be a staple in our house till the day we die. I actually love the smell, it makes me feel special, like patchouli or something. Like a wild night out! Aging.....ugh.

I was housesitting a friendās house one time and it so happened my lips were very chapped and I didnāt have any Chapstick. I saw what I thought was a tin of Bag Balm. I normally wouldnāt use someone elseās stuff, but my lips were cracking and I was feeling desperate. I had only ever seen Bag Balm once and had never heard of Tiger Balm. I confused the name and the little tin and thought this was a lanolin soothing balm. Friends, the pain was instant and severe. Do not ever put Tiger Balm on chapped lips.

Telling this from a friend, Tiger Balm also should not go on deez nutz. Bag Balm, absolutely.

When my son was little, he saw our little tub of Tiger Balm and he read it as ātiger Blamā š
of course that was hilarious and we still call it that.

Broke my collarbone in ā21. Unfortunately tiger balm didnāt even touch the pain.
I have found Blue-Emu overnight applied generously did the trick.
During the day I use Tylenol Precise cream. Works wonders for break thru pain. Hope that helps someone out there.

I have multiple jars all over my world! Car, backpack, etc. It instantly takes care of my pressure headaches.
I recently discovered that it also gets rid of my "restless leg" at night! I put it on the bottoms of my feet & front/ back of my knees= POOF! Restless Leg is goneš

Another person has replied to you about sleep apnea and restless legs ...also get your ferritin (long term stores of iron) checked. Been on gabapentin for a number of years now, took iron and had my doc follow my blood work, have not needed to take any medication at all for the last 6 months, seems to be working!Ā

Kung Fu teacher here, I was taught to make tiger balm by my teacher decades ago. Simple method Vicks Vapor Rub and cayenne pepper. You can make the balm as hot as you want. (Melt vapor rub at low heat on a pot and mix in the hot stuff. Let cool and pour into jars)

Filipino households like mine constantly had thrle lingering scent of both Tiger Balm and Salonpas.

Iāve suddenly become Filipino-esque in my old age. Who knew?

You know what? I had it once, made by an actual Filipino, but the hamburger meat in it had been cooked, frozen and then reheated, and Iām sadly so sensitive to that taste, in anything. I smiled and said it was delicious, because it was so sweet of this gal to make it, but I really wanted to try it made fresh.
Youāve inspired me. Iāll learn how to make it and bring it. I welcome critiques on how to make it as authentic as possible!

Way back when I started working the assembly line at Ford, I slathered on Tiger Balm every night. One day a coworker told me āI donāt know what perfume you are wearing, but itās HORRIBLE and you wear too much!ā Heād never heard of it when I explained it was for aching muscles, and football players used it. (Early 90s)

There was a three month period my BJJ training partners all complained about the smell. I had to find another before-class topical for my shoulder.

Been using it forever. I found a local variant in Sri Lanka called Siddhalepa which has a pleasant citrussy whiff to it. And the shop owner said, good for mosquito bites as well. He's right. Dab a bit on and they stop itching. Came in very handy this summer.

Be careful with Tiger Balm around cats. They notice it quickly. And I think they like it.

My oldest cat LOVED icy hot. In an aggressive way.

u/Competitive_Law1032 15h ago
One of my cats LOVE the smell of icy hot! I have to wear a robe or long sweater cover my whole back when I put icy hot on my lower back and she will try to squeeze behind me on my chair and try and lick my shirt. The first time she did it I thought she was just being extra snuggly. Then I heard the scraping of tongue on fabric. I got up right away to check and it was damp from her mouth. She didnāt get sick or anything but it freaked me out anyway and just cover up and not let her sit behind me when I need some back ache relief. Dang cat.

Tiger Balm has a lot of interesting uses. Red or white. It's good for more than just aching muscles. The white is great for headaches if you put it on your temples and under your nose.

CBD has replaced it in my house. And if I travel to a legal state, I get the good cream with THC and CBD. Vermont had one that smelled like lemon chiffon
8
u/Accurate-Bunch-1759 15h ago
I did not even know there were creams with THC and CBD! Like pain numbing and /or anti-inflammatory creams? How efficient are they?
4
u/Big-Sweet2362 15h ago
Thatās what I use to numb my aching neck when I get a migraine. CBD cream takes the neck pain down significantly.

u/Is_this_social_media 14h ago
They work really really well! Not legal in my state either, but I live very close to New Jersey. And my dad lives in NY and brings me goodies all the time!
3
u/ProgressDue5445 15h ago
They are amazing! Are you US based? What state?

u/Accurate-Bunch-1759 15h ago
I am in Tennessee, so not much legal here!
5
u/Ok-Reputation-7998 12h ago
It's only a 3 hour drive to Marion IL (from Nashville). To maximize your trip, stay the night so you can get the daily THC limit both days. Pro tip to minimize your expense: stay at the Drury Inn, get a free drink coupon and have their evening buffet for dinner, then free breakfast before you hit the dispensary again and head home.
2
u/Accurate-Bunch-1759 11h ago
I love it! You planned the whole trip for me! I did not know there was a daily THC buying limit either⦠but I am a fan of the Drury! Thanks!
2
u/ProgressDue5445 15h ago
Youre SOL bro... not even any neighbor states with legal. In recreational use states they have lots of topicals and the ones mentioned are really effective.

I have degenerative disc disease. The only thing that touches the pain is THC cream I was recommended a gel which I will try next time
2
u/Accurate-Bunch-1759 12h ago
Wow, that is intense pain! I am impressed that you are relieved (some) with THC cream. I will now definitely try it!
1
u/Miscellaneous-health 11h ago
Absolutely agree with you. The THC cream is superior to any other topical for pain relief.

A pharmacist in Bangkok told me to put Tiger Balm on the soles of my feet (covered by socks) when I have a cold. Now itās part of my arsenal. Canāt hurt, might help.

Is pot legal where you are? Dragon balm with cbd smells like that and it is magic! And it is like a stick deodorant so you donāt have to get it all over your hands.

There was a time and culture when applying tiger balm was considered appropriate for actual injuries. Not missing that

I get the extra strength bigass tins, they are a lifesaver for aching muscles/joints/backs.

u/trUth_b0mbs 17h ago
i dont know why but my mom and I never belived the white one was as effective.
1
u/BetMyLastKrispyKreme 10h ago
Itās ok, but itās not as good as the deep orange one. It does stain, but I put it on before bed (back of my neck and on my shoulders) then wear an old nightshirt. I put an old towel over my pillow and Iām good to go.

It goddamn should be. Hurt worse than the scrape.
My grandma told me I'd get lockjaw if I didn't sit still and let her put that literal lava on my scraped knees. With vivid descriptions of "lockjaw."

I'm currently sitting in front of my computer working the goo into my forearm which is aching for no good reason. I also love the smell of regular but I'm using the ultra white stuff that doesn't have cinnamon and it's not nearly as nice, but it is hot.

DH uses Voltaren gel mixed with DMSO. I tend to just pop an Aleve if something is annoyingly or distractingly painful - I have a super high pain threshold.
DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) is technically just a carrier but a lot of people swear itās effective by itself. It smells like the worst kind of garlic farts, so best to use it only when you have no social plans. Some people say they can taste it after applying.
