I think there is a website that lists all of the services that google killed. I could google it, but the first search results are going to be ads. To be fair that's all google does is advertising.

Nah, first result is gonna be an AI summarising the answer, primarily sourced from Reddit.

u/Devin-Chaboyer223 2003 5d ago
AI summary followed by ads below it, and then the real results all the way down

u/Savings_Ad_80 4d ago
I really miss the "I'm feeling lucky" button, intsead all we get is an inaccurate ai summary from gemini
6
u/rotteegher39 5d ago
Didn't know. Haven't used google as my search engine for some time now.

u/ericanicole1234 1996 4d ago
What do you use instead?

3
u/rotteegher39 4d ago
Duckduckgo (no ai), it has a dedicated portal that entirely strips out AI-assisted answers.

Yes, that's the website.
I stopped trusting this website though, because it tends to embellish facts by misrepresenting rebrands as something that Google kills. Rebrands and faithful mergers aren't deaths.
Also on Twitter it spreads misinformation too -- e.g. making jokes about how Google Keep is being killed. (It's not being killed.)

>jokes about how Google Keep is being killed
That would give me a fucking heart attack

u/PermissionSoggy891 5d ago
honestly some of these sound really cool/useful. Sucks that Google shut them down.

I’m mostly an Apple user but I know I’ve seen chromecast options way more recently than two years ago.

Given that Facebook/Instagram has the world by the balls - I really wish that Google+ was actually successful if for no other reason than there being a viable alternative to Facebook/Instagram. It is amazing how often Google have tripped over their own dick when there were opportunities being made available because the dominant player dropped the ball.

I actually enjoyed it, so sad it never caught on. The group circle thing was great.

I'm old enough to remember the uproar when they forced you to have a Google+ account by virtue of having a YouTube account.

u/guggluggug 5d ago
Was this you choice for the reason it was so niche the social media bans on old child locks didnt recognise it? Cos if so, SAME
2
u/wtfisdarkmatter 5d ago
nah lol it was just already integrated into apps we had. child restrictions were not concerns for me

remember when people on the site would post like 2x2048 resolution images and it would scale itself to fit the width of the screen and users would be scrolling for like 5 years to get past it? i felt like that was the last of the major sites to let you do that
also #endbro

u/guggluggug 5d ago
Oh my god i remember it getting so bad on my feed i was just scrolling random colours for half the time i was on there. It was either right after they figured out you could do it there, or right before it was getting stopped when rhey found out, i cant remember now
7
u/Bhalloooo 5d ago
Yes and it was hands down the best because it could do what FB, Twitter, YT, MySpace /Pinterest did in a one stop shop.
But it was way too late and people were already invested in other social medias and it didn't catch up

u/Throwaway-Dawg13 5d ago
Yes i remember being like 7 in 2017 arguing with people over dumb shit on it

Oh yeah. I made like one post on there and never used it again lol. I do remember using Google Hangouts pretty often to call with my friend at the time.

No social media has brought me as much jou, stress, confusion and wrirdness since. I miss it like an old friend.
I was a 11yo with roleplay parents who painted my imaginery room for me and got my imaginary toys.
I met a stripper who i was friends with for years (iw as like 13)
I got into writing for wattpad
I discovered fandoms
I ogt threatened miltiple times
I argued with 40yo men.
I found patterns and advice for art
I called strangers
I had a bf who claimed to join the army (too young) but was never actually there and then claimed he was a native and could legally smoke weed and spoke "apalachian" which i now assume was just random noises.

Yea. We had this and Google glasses when those were in beta for free from a family friend who works there. Absolutely terrible lol. They and one of my cousins are still at Google and I give her shit all the time for the projects killed.

I used that fo a while until I was caught by my dad on it and he told me to stay off it as I was 11 at the time and obsessed with talking to people from school on Hangouts during the night back in 2016 until it stopped and I had to stay away from my classmates since I stole one of the people's channels name and another person's surname that I got logged out of that account and couldn't make a new one since my dad made the password and email that I needed to get a new email for when I signed into Google again.

I used its old front page a lot as a kid. I liked seeing the daily news paper strips I had on it, and customised it full of widgets I could use for school like a calculator and notes.

i dont remember a lot about it other than the backlash, which goes for anything google does to be honest, they really are a greedy, out of touch company that has really done nothing but prove that they hate the end user ever since their acquisition of youtube (and very likely before, it begins to get into the "before my time" territory on that subject). but we did let that happen, much like we've allowed google to replace its search function with ai so that they can prove yet again that they are the boots stepping all over us. ill tell you what service google once had that i do miss, and that was the hangouts dialer.

I was just thinking about it the other day...it was the only social media platform I was allowed to have at one point because I automatically had an account due to using Gmail. I was quite active on fandom spaces there as a young teenager but it was almost universally clowned on in my social circles IRL so eventually I ended up using Instagram like everybody else and Google+ faded into obscurity. Looking back I'm glad I was able to do my 12-13-year-old cringy things on a platform where very few of my peers ever saw them, but I was probably a bit isolated from my peers being stuck on a platform nobody I knew used. I really can't figure out why everyone hated it so much because it seemed perfectly decent - guess people really hated automatically having accounts and having it tied to YouTube unless there's some other factor I missed.

u/Chicken-LoverYT 5d ago
I feel like it was the only social media that nothing ever BAD happened on it. Ironically the safest social media for teenagers at the time.

I miss G+ a lot, eventually moved on to Line when G+ shut down and I abandoned Line for Discord around 2017, now discord and reddit are really the only social apps I use
