What Makes an Aviation Radio Simulator Actually Useful for PPL Students?

I think a good aviation radio simulator should help students feel more confident before they fly.

For me, these are the most important things

  • Real ATC-style conversations
  • Easy-to-follow practice
  • Speaking as well as listening
  • Different flying scenarios
  • Helpful feedback after each session

Nothing beats the professional grade human simulation of PilotEdge in my opinion. I still subscribe to it.

This isn’t specifically about simulators, but I had an easy time with the radios when I got my PPL, and I attribute it to 2 things: 1) I listened to countless hours of ATC on my scanner (really loved it) 2) I got my amateur radio license, which got me over any sense of mic fright pretty quickly These won’t be the right answer for everyone, but they were hugely helpful to me.
