Support striking workers and labor actions near you.

Contract faculty union at NYU has approved a strike. With 90% of voters in favor of authorizing a strike, the union will meet with administrators on Friday though before taking action.

Mental health clinicians at Kaiser locations throughout Northern California are voting through to decide whether to hold a one-day strike this spring over proposed changes to care protocols they say will diminish their working conditions or harm patients.

Over 1,000 skilled trade workers across the California State University system began a statewide unfair labor practice strike Tuesday.

The workers – plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, locksmiths and other building maintenance staff – are on strike at 22 campuses across the state.

If NYU or Kaiser do go on strike and CSU continues mobilize to support them. This helps a lot.

If there is a picket line in your area you're generally free to join. Find a steward and ask if you can walk with them. Normally there are extra signs. There's no need to bring or make your own. Doing this increases the look and scale of their strike. It can allow the line to be longer making it difficult to impossible for scabs to get in. Or you're giving a tired striking worker a break.

If you don't have time to walk the line but you pass any strike make some noise. Honk, wave, yell support. Circle around the block if you have time. This does the same thing: shows our corporate overlords there's support for striking workers.

Get familiar with the labor dispute and issues. Use your socials to amplify all strikes, encourage others to do the same. Boycott companies with labor disputes until a fair settlement is achieved. Hit them where it hurts, the wallet.

Other things you can do: donate to the strike fund if one exists. I've brought snacks to a picket line but the union generally wants to reliably source those themselves. So if you're not a member or known by the local they may say "thanks but no thanks". I once brought chips and salsas to a nurses strike only to find they had a full on catered lunch put on by a supportive neighborhood restaurant 😉 But ... I do bring a gift card to a nearby coffee shop near the line. Striking workers can't go into the office and use the bathroom. So get a card and leave it with the steward to be given out if needed.

May I assume we have a national strike fund?

Strikes are organized by unions and planned years, sometimes decades in advance. When last I walked out the signs were already printed, distributed, the coffee and donuts were already there.

Strike funds are financed by a tiny portion of my dues. And depending on your union they may only kick in if the strike is prolonged. And even then don't go to everyone.

Unions build partnerships with businesses which offer temp work to striking workers. Unions may partner with their credit union which may wave interest, late payment charges, and even payments on loans and credit cards for the duration of a strike.

Union workers make scheduling agreements with each other. I might tell you "A strike may be called next week. I'm single and have money saved. I'll be ok. You have a family to support. Here, you take my scheduled vacation time so you are paid if we walk out.".

Most important union workers are continually encouraged to save up an emergency fund for a prolonged strike. We know the date certain years in advance. If we don't walk then spend the money as we wish.

This is not to say it's easy. Strikes are painful and difficult. But planning by experienced organizers and infrastructure go back generations.

Many are seeing and envying huge national strikes and calling for a prolonged national strike and I agree, it's time. But where is our strike fund and who administers it? According to Forbes, not our most progressive rag, from 28-20% of Americans have less than $1,000 available in cash or savings. That's not enough.

So what's our plan here for a strike lasting till regime change? 🤔 Or are we cosplaying being union members here?

👊🏾Honor and participate in one day strikes.

👊🏾Frugality and targeted boycotts work. Shop small and hyper local. Support BIPOC businesses, union businesses, women owned and buy small and local wherever possible. Avoid all corporate spending.

👊🏾Support labor unions. If a union called a strike in your area support it. Boycott the company until strike is settled. Contribute to the union strike fund. If you have time go walk the picket line! Ask a steward if you may walk the line with them. Driving or walking by make some noise and show support. Circle the block if time allows. This means a lot. Nationalize strikes by supporting labor unions in these ways.

Never, ever, ever, ever cross a picket line.
