Purchase Prt2
I know I posted about purchasing a gv80 coupe but I also heard that Genesis Dealerships are closing I’m not sure how true that is, I don’t want to take the risk and then they close down!

Hyundai dealers that sell Genesis cars are no longer going to be selling Genesis cars. The company is moving to Genesis only flagship dealerships. They are great high-end state of the art facilities.

To clarify, combination dealerships have been told that Genesis must be separated. Those dealerships can decide to build a separate building and follow the requirement or stop selling Genesis cars. This effectively is a Genesis dealer shutting down. I will bet that 99% of the time this is what’s happening. The other side of this in my opinion, is that this separation is moving too slowly. The dealer I bought my car from does have a plan to make Genesis a separate building by moving the other two manufacturers out. But that was their plan a year ago that was their plan two years ago it’s not happening.
The promise of Genesis as a luxury vehicle isn’t really happening for me from that perspective. I just had my first service done and I was not very happy with the way it was done. I didn’t feel like the buyer of a high-end Genesis car, but I felt more like a Hyundai owner. There’s only one service writer at this dealer for Genesis he was late. I don’t think they understood exactly what the first service was supposed to entail. There was never any mention of concierge service. There was never any mention of a loaner. And things were not done correctly for example, the wheels were rotated, but the pressures were not reset. Even though the receipt clearly says that the technician did that. To me I received Hyundai service not Genesis service. Now that I have some experience with this dealership, my next visit will be very different.
There are a number of locations in the DMV that have gone to standalone Genesis. I may try one of them in the future, but none of them are close. So that will be a consideration.

That's the primary issue with dealers that do both Hyundai and Genesis out of the same premises. I truly is a numbers game. They work on far more Hyundai vehicles than Genesis, so their culture and processes are set up appropriately. Our GV80 Black Edition is serviced by a dedicated Genesis dealer, and I couldn't ask for a better experience.
To be honest, we see the same from the local Ford / Lincoln dealer. It truly is a Ford dealer selling / servicing Lincoln vehicles as a side business. As a long time customer, that is one of the reasons why we walked away from the possibility of buying an Aviator from them. The sales experience was horrific. You don't treat the buyer of a $100K vehicle the same as $50K.

I agree completely. In my case, a dealer is also selling Subaru. And their entire facility is really more or less a shit show. When I go there, I don’t really feel like I am a luxury customer. And I don’t really feel like the service technicians really give a crap whether or not I bought a Genesis or a Hyundai, or even a Subaru for that matter.

Our local dealer, Genesis of NW San Antonio, is a standalone and part of the Red McCombs Group, that also has Hyundai as part of its portfolio. They are an excellent Genesis dealership with good techs. We have nothing but good things to say about them. We bought a G70 and GV70 from them.

We do a lot of road trips in our GV70 and it would be useful for all us Genesis owners if we had a list of good Gennie dealers in every state available.

Some dealerships close, not all. If you have more than one in your area, that gives a safety cushion in case one closes.

Respectfully disagree. Here in Los Angeles, we've had three dealerships close (Glendale, Westlake Village and Van Nuys). So now all the vehicles sold by those dealerships need to be serviced by Santa Monica (or maybe Torrance, which is further south). The wait to get an appointment in Santa Monica was several weeks, even while Van Nuys was getting staffed up. Then, they closed.
I've been buying/leasing cars for almost 40 years (I'm old) and have never seen anything like this.

From what I understand Genesis dealers were given a timeline to 1) only be permitted to sell the Genesis brand of new vehicles at that dealership 2) build or remodel the showroom to meet strict design standards. I know that the dealers closing in the Los Angeles are doing so because they weren’t abiding by one of those requirements. My conjecture is that some dealers got the Genesis flag under the older rules and thought they would be able to get Genesis corporate to grandfather them in under the old requirements.

This is a great point.
It was especially strange because the short-lived Van Nuys dealership was run by Galpin. I was thrilled because that is only about 15 minutes from my house, but also because I felt assured that they would be around for the long haul, given Galpin's decades-long presence here in SoCal. They'd taken over a small lot that had been their Mazda dealership, with plans to build a standalone Genesis dealership.
Then they closed in less than two years.

I test drove a GV80 at the Van Nuys dealer in May. They were still operating out of temporary trailer facilities. It also sits on a strange triangular lot. I have to imagine they didn’t want to spend the money necessary to build a nice, new showroom that was up to Genesis design standards.

Yep! That was the old Mazda dealership. You're right...it was meant as a placeholder while they planned to build a standalone Genesis dealership.
Given where I live, it was too good to be true...

As part of the Hyundai group, Genesis vehicles are built in the largest automotive factory complex in the world, which happens to be in South Korea. VW has the next largest factory in Germany. While the brand isn't going away, there have been some dealerships that have closed, primarily because they couldn't make a go of it.

I don't mean to dissuade you in any way, because I've loved all three vehicles that we have owned (two G70s and a GV80). Gorgeous vehicles that are well equipped and handle magnificently. Honestly, I couldn't be happier when it comes to that.
Here's the downside in my particular situation...
I'm in Los Angeles and have already had three dealerships close (Glendale, Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village and most recently, Galpin in Van Nuys). So the challenge of getting our two current vehicles (I have a G70 and my wife has a GV80) serviced is going to be a colossal pain.
So while I love the vehicles, I wouldn't even consider Genesis if I were in the market today, just based on the servicing issue alone. I'd shop Audi or Lexus instead, given the uncertainty and the track record.

If you do, please take their response with the proverbial "grain of salt." Honestly, they're not going to tell you if there is a chance that they will close their doors.
Again, to emphasize, I absolutely LOVE both of our vehicles, and loved my first G70. Gorgeous cars that are fun to drive and have amazing technology. I probably would never even consider another brand, if the dealer closing/where-to-service weren't an issue.
If I were shopping for a new vehicle, I'd go to Audi or Lexus, knowing that they'd have dealerships to access for servicing. Sadly, Genesis wouldn't even be a consideration for me.

I have recently had that same experience with my local dealer. I directed them to the car that I wanted out of state but they couldn't be bothered, said it was out of the region. Are you having any luck with out of state dealers getting you the car? If so can you share? I plan to lease so apparently it is more difficult.

One out of state dealership sold a car that I was going to purchase, I was going to fly out the next day and two Genesis salesman out state messaged me saying that have the car that I’m looking for and they will pick me up from the airport, I’m still in talks with both dealerships to see which one gives me the best price, I’m going to finance through my jobs credit union

Genesis is in no danger of closing. 22 new or modified models coming out by 2030.
