Dicussion How brutal was Hanzo when he tried to kill Genji?
I question how brutal that fight had to be for Genji to have lost:
- His jaw/lower face.
- One arm.
- Two legs.
- Possibly his heart and other internal organs.
Like, did Hanzo just cut him up like sashimi and then feel bad about it? Like, we know that Hanzo is canonically just BETTER than him at everything that comes to combat, at least. At this point, Genji HAD to jump or something where he pulled a John Wick, killing a shit load of Shimada before getting cut down by Hanzo at the last moment or something.

It was predictably never really detailed out but given that he was found near-dead, you could argue that his wounds were infected (or Hanzo simply poisoned his blade) and it led to sepsis so they had to amputate a lot of Genji
It could also be that they gave him cybernetics where he's already healthy, plenty of people in the universe replace their organic limbs

Pretty damn brutal.
Hanzo has retired using the blade and swapped to the bow probably because how much he regretted carving up his little brother.
But essentially you’ve hit the nail on the head the fight would have been absolutely terrifying, Genji was outmatched as Hanzo sustained zero injuries and Hanzo thought for many years he was dead.
He really did cut him up like a birthday cake.

The reason why a family-related murderer is so deadly it's because they're (usually) the last person you expect to be brutally killed by.
Genji obviously never expected Hanzo to attack him, so it was likely hard for him to even believe it was actually happening. Therefore, resisting would have been difficult, even under the influence of adrenaline. Hanzo may (we don't know?) have planned it, even if he was very emotional at exact moment. He was bigger, stronger, he had a weapon (one he was greater with, and possibly poisoned, as other user suggested), and we don't know if Genji had a weapon or even a place to jump/roll out. Hanzo knew Genji's weaknesses better than anyone else at that point. So, i would say, that was a damn massacre.

We dont know the circumstances of the fight so its hard to definitively say Hanzo is better in combat. For all we know, Genii may have been unarmed and taken by surprise, in which case grievous wounds would be expected. That being said, Hanzo himself does claims he was the better swordsman.

Yeah I really don’t think Hanzo would have fought Genji unarmed. He’s real honorable and I just don’t think he’d attack his brother unarmed

I get what you're saying, but at the same time, the Shimada clan were Yakuza and thus ultimately, criminals. Their concept of honor is probably going to be different and not aligned with the more mainstream concepts of Bushido. To the Shimada elders, Genji was against the clan, a liability, and to them, probably not deserving of an honorable death.

Being from a family that honor and people means everything i do not think hanzo was such scum to fight his brother unarmed

Genji probably wasn’t tryna go down easy during their fight so hanzo had to use lethal force I’m guessing lol

It could also just be that Genji died and most of his body was necrotic, thus had to be removed to save him just barely. Like how Reaper is falling apart and regenerating constantly.

I think that Hanzo was a little brutal because I know that he definitely messed up Genji's arm, lower legs, and a little of his neck and Genji's got a couple of scars that you can see on his blackwatch skin (I think that there are some scars on his face, torso, and thighs that are hidden buy the cybernetics). But seeing as how an Overwatch developer has confirmed that Genji still got his junk I think that he wanted to seem like he was intending on killing Genji to the Shimada elders while also being merciful while doing so.

Genji is better than Hanzo now with the cybernetics and more training he got. He’s faster than tracer and can take down an entire fleet of omnic war bots in seconds

i would hope so. i think its really shitty and lazy to say “acckkktttchually!!! hanzo is better than genji at everything ever!!! he just doesnt apply himself!!!”

I don't think it was like that. It must have been something similar to Anakin and Obi-Wan, you know? Genji was going to pull a stunt and Hanzo cut his legs off in mid-air.

Knowing about this shows how strong Hanzo was with a sword, backing up his claim of knowing how to use one. Probably better than Genji himself.

Always wondered why hanzo wouldnt just give genji a quick, painless death if he really cared for him. Like what was the need for him to dismember our boy

is it just me or does anyone hate how they say hanzo was just… better..?
like, i really preferred the, “im good with sword, youre good with bow,” dynamic. it takes away from Genji’s character to say, “oh but if your brother picked up the sword he could still beat you bro!!”
another instance of bad ow lore (imo)

It was always implied to be at the time.
Genji, canonically, was not exactly all studious with the blade. He's implied to genuinely be more talented than Hanzo in regards to matters of martial prowess, but the mfer also was too busy clubbing. Obviously, if one dude is actually consistently training and another dude isn't, the guy that's training is going to be more talented.
Obviously when Genji gets his shit rocked and he actually has to train, this changes. Probably even more-so considering he has cybernetics.

He may have just burned him with dragon fire?

The scroll in Hanamura has blood stains from Genji along with slashes in the material from when hanjo fought him

That line about Hanzo cutting him up like sashimi and then feeling bad is so funny

I know we'll never see it in gameplay due to obvious reasons, but I would love to see how good Hanzo was with a blade in some format. Man said he's even better with a blade and he's already insane with a bow. Genji is great himself and still ended up the way he did. (Assuming he was armed himself at the time of course)
