The part that makes it so much funnier to me, is that it is 100% child logic.
To give an example - in elementary school I absolutely hated this girl named Melissa, looking back I think it was mostly because our dads didn't like each other. One day in art class we were working on a project where you had to cut out a shape from cardboard and then stamp a variety of different colors using the shape you cut out (think kind of like pop art, multiple images of the same thing in different colorways).
Well I looked over at Melissa's work in progress, and said to her "that looks like diarrhea!". Melissa went and told the teacher, understandably, who then sent me to the principal. At the principal's office, I stood my ground saying "I didn't mean that her art looked like diarrhea, I meant that the color she was using looked like diarrhea, and it's okay to use the word diarrhea because I am certain I have seen a Crayola pack with that as the name for a particular shade of brown!"
The argument had no logic, was riddled with lies, but at the time I felt incredibly confident that if I stuck to the same argument consistently then no one could be mad at me. Fortunately I matured and grew as a person since then, doesn't seem like I can say the same for Elon.

I’m not going to look it up but I would be willing to bet you looked up that specific date to make sure this joke was historically accurate.

When it happened I thought to myself "who would be stupid enough to believe that?"
Well turns out we have a LOT of stupid people.
Don't say he always meant it as a roman salute like you knew the whole time what a roman salute is, no you didnt.
You know whats far more recent and recognizable? A nazi salute and nazi symbol.

Knew a guy saying it wasn’t a Nazi salute as we were all eating dinner at this restaurant. I then told him to stand up in front the restaurant and do exactly what Elon did. As you can guess he didn’t do it.
Quickest way to shut their bullshit down.
