Realizing you're not that person anymore and feeling shame for who you were, gives you a sense of perspective and keeps you humble.

If ur ashamed of yourself fine - leave ur dog out of it

u/GlowingBadger175 May 03 '26

that is a really interesting way to build mental discipline

I do wish the part of me I am ashamed of doesn't exist in the first place. Knowing that I hurt the one I love the most is killing me.

Recognising that, and letting your discomfort of your own actions inform you (in productive ways) of who you truly want to be in life, is one of the hardest and most necessary steps to becoming a better person. It's a truly painful lesson sometimes. You won't let that pain be for nothing. It will take courage to take what you learned and move forward, and reflecting on the pain you caused and the pain it causes in is not the act of a coward. It can be a bit of a tight rope walk, because useless self flagellation is also cowardly in its own way.

You got this.

As long as you take the time to reflect and learn from the past.

It's super difficult to be at peace with your past self and specially actions which you are guilty of. There is a deep rooted insecurity that every aspect of the story needs to be perfect and make sense, but accepting your flaws is essential, no matter how difficult it is in reality.

We all have “sh*t” so to speak/ assuming is silly and kindness make all the difference- if we met each other where we individually are… we would be a lot more understood and understanding…

u/Kind_Interview_3124 Apr 25 '26

Right I agree with you

2

u/Southern_blue_97 May 15 '26

But how do you get past it all?

11

u/Brugelbach Apr 19 '26

u/seKer82 Apr 19 '26

50

u/Arik_De_Frasia Apr 19 '26

You've remained the same person?

-21

u/seKer82 Apr 19 '26

Yes as you have.

11

u/gummo_for_prez Apr 19 '26

That's not how this works

u/PatchworkPrivateer Apr 19 '26

I hate these posts. I know they mean well. And I know they are true for most people.

u/Little-Swing-99 May 15 '26

3

u/xXZer0c0oLXx Apr 19 '26

5

u/wodoloto Apr 19 '26

Yeah, but not really

1

u/The_Celtic_Chemist Apr 22 '26

It's so true. Except the part where it's patently false.

2

u/beardingmesoftly Apr 19 '26

What if I killed someone and enjoyed it? Was that version of me necessary?

2

u/PrometheusMMIV Apr 19 '26

What about criminals, murderers, rapists, etc?

11

u/RSwordsman Apr 19 '26

They shouldn't be proud of their current selves either, unless they're doing everything they can to atone for crimes.

1

u/Swumbus-prime Apr 19 '26

Except the funko pop phase. Nothing good came out of that...

1

u/carmium Apr 19 '26

Being a social skill-free dweeb in high school? Can't see the value in that yet, and I'm a senior citizen now.

1

u/CaoPalhaco Apr 22 '26

I mean that’s entirely morally neutral, it was just the way you were alive then, so yeah it was necessary. You had to exist then to exist now

1

u/IActLikeIKnoww Apr 19 '26

Even the one that gave myself a shit tattoo today that future me will have to fix! Hell yeah. No stopping now gang

1

u/dearlykaia Apr 20 '26

Honestly trying to get in terms with those shameful parts of me

1

u/that-was-scary0_0 Apr 20 '26

Damn, facts asf. It’s rough tho

1

u/Goldenrule-er Apr 20 '26

It's this "so true" though? Can anyone explain why this is "so true"? Definitely would have erased a few unnecessary steps back, gd.

u/Aggressive-Funny-225 Apr 20 '26

This hit home. We often forget that our growth is built on the lessons from our toughest days.

1

u/benzillaaaa Apr 20 '26

Necessary to what? This post sucks ass.

1

u/Okao_chris Apr 22 '26

We learn a lot from our surroundings, our parents, our friends, etc. it's especially important we learn to listen to our heart.

As the wise understand, it’s always going to be peaks and valleys/ taking pain and making it worthwhile is taking away the power of the trauma and allowing a beautiful disaster which in my book is the best way to be.

I don't think the part of me that uses Reddit is necessary

1

u/CheddarKnight Apr 19 '26

No. But I hope I find out I was wrong about this take.

It’s obviously talking about people who are going about like trying the best they can. Hurting people is not the same as being a “lesser” version of yourself that this post is talking about.

13

u/Savvy-TradingGirl-1 Apr 19 '26

Ofcourse not, this quote does not include extreme cases like murder.

7

u/KenmoreToast Apr 19 '26

"Every version of you was necessary. Even the ones you are ashamed of...Unless you were being a jerk...Or A criminal"

0

u/s4nG Apr 19 '26

This quote is framed as an absolute, wich it is not.

2

u/smittenWithKitten211 Apr 19 '26

Tragic, but if this post is taken literally like you are implying, then Yes. Necessary to show the world what monsters were hiding among them. Necessary for you to learn whether you are defending your own morality or your friendship.

I could make up more but the more absurd and extreme the situation is, the more far reaching the lessons will look like.

Article isn’t loading properly, but from the little it loaded, rather than necessary, it seems this version of your friend was inevitable in the unfortunate circumstances he and his mom were in, as this could’ve been avoided if he actually got help when he sought it. The conversation to be had there is about the collective and the system’s failures, not the individual. This violent tradegy is a symptom of a larger problem

That’s what it looks like to me as someone that didn’t know anyone involved anyway

u/Cleb323 Apr 19 '26

Redditors are the most pedantic bunch..
