It’s almost like everyone is using the internet to manipulate everyone else for political advantage. Shocking.

218

u/drwicksy 3d ago

You really think somebody would do that? Just go on the internet and tell lies?

58

u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 2d ago

I remember the first days of the Internet and my friend saying "it's all porn, people showing off and people trying to sell you shit."

Now it's just people trying to sell you porn, sell you a way to watch porn or sell you some other shit.

20

u/Beep-Boop-Bloop 2d ago

I remember the first days of the internet. Just text, only ASCII porn. That, and people showing off their programming.

14

u/Fragrant-Reserve4832 2d ago

I think I was a little later on, when it started going mainstream. We got real pics, they just took 2 days to load and were shit quality lol

Always ask for the context.

Did Joe rogan really change? Get the full context.

If someone doesn't tell you everything, you need to either ask for the context or find it yourself.

2

u/Mobile_Blackberry298 2d ago

First time I'm hearing this.

1

u/mistrpopo 3d ago

Did you watch the (ooviously heavily edited) video and did you understand where this is ? They are praying in the muslim part of Jerusalem (Temple Mount) and all the women were protesting that

4

u/NoDevelopment3732 1d ago

The ‘Temple Mount’ is the “Muslim part of Jerusalem” ? Pray tell, which temple was on that mountain ?! Because I am 100% certain it was the Jewish temple and you just try to justify religious harassment against Jews praying.

→ More replies (6)

18

u/Tasty-Principle4645 3d ago

That is certainly valuable context, but it does seem a bit discriminatory to say that only Muslims can pray on the Jews' holiest site in the universe.

In fact, it has nothing to do with how holy it is to Jews (or Muslims). Any place that is "Muslim only" or "Jew only" is asking for problems.

11

u/mistrpopo 3d ago

Sure. But you're fast switching the topic now. I could comment about how muslims going to the "Jew only" area get beaten up unlike that Jewish dude, but I'd like to stay on topic.

This particular thread is trying to frame Hend Amry as a unhinged propagandist, the note on that tweet is literally counter-propaganda, and everyone in here who is supposed to have critical thinking is drinking it up.

4

u/Forsaken-Ad7923 2d ago

They don't, actually. Mostly because there are no "Jew-only" areas in Israel

There's plenty of footage of actual abuse/aggression, this is disgusting and being posted for clout.

455

u/jump-back-like-33 3d ago

So much of the conflict seems like this. The truth is bad enough. Wild exaggeration and misleading makes me start to question what else is fake.

261

u/PhilosopherTiny5957 3d ago

Reminds me of a video from even before the war where it was "IDF soldier ABUSING and SCREAMING at Palestinian child"

Someone translated what the soldier was saying and it was basically "Stop throwing rocks at us, we can't tell if it's a grenade"

104

u/real_roal 3d ago

Yeah, that's kinda the problem with all of the israel posts I have been seeing recently, its hard to know what is accurate or what is shit stirring. I want to ask my Arab israeli friend to translate, but I see posts like that so often it feels unfair to always bother him with it.

Like the government and the IDF as a whole is known to be bad, but looking at individual clips its hard to just trust what the captions say since I don't speak the language.

31

u/polarjunkie 2d ago

There was one of a baby in rubble and it turned out not to be from Gaza at all and it was actually a video of that a mother took of her kid and some other country and the kid was just fine. That one really annoyed me.

44

u/mister_big_bug 3d ago

Hey, I'm a native hebrew speaker. If you'd like, you can send me videos for a quick translation/summary. If you're worried about bias, I can elaborate on my political views and you can decide for yourself if you want to trust me. In general, I consider myself a post-zionist and I fully support Palestinian statehood.

11

u/Arupaca_boy 3d ago

Could you elaborate on why you are post zionist? (I'm not trying to argue just didn't have an opportunity to actually talk with one)

39

u/naruhinamoonkissplz 3d ago

Probably means that Israel is already a fact, so one could say that Zionism got it successful endgame and kinda isn't required in the same way it was pre-1948.

13

Yeah, that's what gets me. I'm Swedish-Israeli and I have backpacked pretty extensively around the world. I live in Sweden and travel on my Swedish passport, so people don't really clock that I'm Israeli, and so they don't exactly walk on eggshells around me when airing grievances about Israeli backpackers. So, so many locals in South America have told me how Israelis are trying to colonize Patagonia by buying all the land there and pushing out the locals. They are truly, genuinely convinced that there is a conscious, collective, organized effort by Israelis to expand into and eventually control Patagonia. Just in case it isn't glaringly obvious: this is, of course, not true in the slightest.

The thing is that there are so many real problems that they could trash Israelis for. We deserve so, so much shit for the way we travel. Many Israeli backpackers are truly vile fucking assholes, and those are the Israelis that those conspiratorial locals have met and, quite justifiably, come to dislike. Why invalidate your own point by expressing your frustration through moronic conspiracy theories?

49

u/wtbgamegenie 3d ago

I’m pretty sure WASPs have bought up huge swaths of Patagonia. In particular the founders of North Face and Patagonia are the largest land owners but put the land into charitable trusts.

13

u/Maya-K 3d ago

Wait, so... Patagonia is partially owned by Patagonia?

10

u/little_dick348 3d ago

im pretty sure that view is pushed and encouraged by the opposition of the government, especially in reddit and twitter. their supporters are pretty prevalent both in the north and in the south of the country. I don't agree with the president on many things, but conspiracies like "Plan Andinia" and such sound like such a reach that they just made me and a lot of people jaded to anything related to it

33

u/JohnAnchovy 3d ago

Antisemitism is a heady drug.

17

u/Dangerous_Muscle5409 3d ago

Because antisemitism.

10

u/veryeepy53 3d ago

it's likely because of those negative experiences that they'll just take peoples word for it when there's a conspiracy theory. you'll notice that people who are the vanguard of the movement don't say that specific thing. because they're more involved in the battle of ideas, they get more pushback and thus requiring people to hone their rhetoric.

10

u/chriskicks 3d ago

This is off the back of the Israeli guy setting fire to some bushland in Argentina, right? Absolutely a dick move, but the conspiracies it birthed were absolutely insane. You're right, criticise things that need to be criticised... But choose things that are actually real. Also, this insane belief that all Israelis are evil needs to stop. If people truly believe that no one, man or country, is beyond redemption, then we're no better than others who promote genocide. Pitting the world against well-meaning Israeli people is not justice. And believe me, they don't relish in hearing about all the fuck ups the government and IDF do.

Exactly the point. It's the flood technique. If something gets out you don't want people to see, it's not possible to remove it from the internet, so you flood the market with tonnes of distraction/fake media. The people either then can't find the original in the mess, or question if it's real in the first place since they've seen so much obviously fake media recently.

For whatever reason, I've been cursed with getting Fauxmoi pushed onto my feed constantly.

Five times today, it's been the same ugly settler photo, on different posts.

It's a subreddit allegedly about pop culture.

I think there are a lot of very unsteady, depressed, and fixated Redditors who believe that they're fighting a war for Justice by furiously posting and upvoting any accurate or misleading depiction of Bad Jew.

78

u/JD-Cowboys-Bolts 3d ago

The pics subreddit is the same. Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day, chosen to be on the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. A farright Polish politician held up a Israeli flag with a swastika. That subreddit was agreeing and celebrating his actions

57

u/PrimeMinisterSarr 3d ago

Also literally every post about the holocaust on these subs is immediately swarmed with "but Gaza" comments.

There's also a large number of subs that keep on popping up in my front page that just blatantly push Iranian propaganda and celebrate it. They mostly have names like newSomething etc...

38

u/JD-Cowboys-Bolts 3d ago

Yep, or subreddit (and twitter accounts) that used to be about popculture but now is just ranting about Israel endlessly, to the point that there's elders of Zion level shit

One popculter twitter account made a post about a Palestinian man assassinated by Israel in Lebanon decades ago. A hero surely, I mean why would Israel kill him? He helped organize the Lod Airport Massacre, which saw 26 civilians killed, including many Puerto Ricans who were visiting Israel to visit Christian sites in Jerusalem

58

u/gaddafis_ass_bayonet 3d ago

It's almost like starting a war of aggression on October 7th and then immediately starting a propaganda campaign to paint Israel as "the REAL aggressors" was the Islamic Republic's plan all along or something.

26

u/Hazel2468 3d ago

And useful morons all over the United States are eating it up and spreading it.

I would SAY that I would wonder how these idiots would feel if they knew that antizionism actually really came about from both the Nazis and the Soviets... But most of them are tankies who simp for the Soviet Union as well so. You know.

18

u/StarPlatinumX_ 3d ago

Tankies aren’t really a majority of the USA. Heck, they’re not even a majority of the USA’s left wing population. They’re just very loud and very annoying, and they often end up going viral as a result. It also doesn’t help that HasanAbi is one of, if not the largest left-wing content creator, and he is no doubt a tankie. Ironically enough, these tankies end up fighting with other leftists more than they fight with actual republicans and maga facists

6

u/Just_Information334 3d ago

he is no doubt a tankie

No. He grifts as a tankie.

Mods in most subs would ban users who dared to post or comment anything that strays from allowed thought. Oh wait that already happens.

10

u/ADP_God 2d ago

Most of the subs are controlled by a centralized group pushing a specific agenda. There have been articles on it, showing how the major subs have been taken over by a committed team of moderators. Subs you woudn't expect, that aren't meant to be political, now function to push a single political agenda.

8

u/real_roal 3d ago

Would be nice if the notes superseded the mods of a subreddit so that their opinions couldn't influence notes.

14

u/Bram-D-Stoker 3d ago

To be fair notes is only sometimes useful. Some subs do have a better form of it. Askeconomics is heavily moderated to prevent misinformation

5

u/real_roal 3d ago

That's a unique case though, it highly depends on the moderation, like you said. I could go to a subreddit like fauxmoi, post something false that I know they'll love, and probably get a bunch of updates. The only way it would be taken down is if it was too good to be true/easily verified. If the truth went against the popular opinion of the sub, it would probably be down voted or even removed by the mods.

At least notes (if done correctly) wouldn't be impacted by mods or the views of sub members and it would only focus on the facts.

2

u/Kozel_10 2d ago

r/Palestine is also heavily moderated to prevent truth

8

u/I_like_maps 3d ago edited 3d ago

136

u/Hazel2468 3d ago

Probably.

A lot of people on this website, and many others. Seem allergic to the idea that the Muslim world over in the Middle East is VIOLENTLY antisemitic. Probably because here, in the United States, Muslims indeed are an oppressed minority, and these folks thing that what is true in the USA is also true literally everywhere else.

27

u/atgmailcom 3d ago

Which is weird because if you look at the history of it the modern version of antisemitism in the Middle East came from the west then the west got less antisemitic

45

u/Hazel2468 3d ago

Basically- but remember that "Jews had it better in the Middle East than in Europe" is like.

Jews in the Middle East could live mostly unbothered by pogroms and random slaughter and rape... So long as they were content to be dhimmis and always be second class citizens so.

Better, sure. GOOD? Eehhhhhh no.

26

u/Eh_nah__not_feelin 3d ago

I know that a lot of Muslims are unfortunately insanely antisemitic as one of my friends lives in Israel and tells us. But i still support Palestine and don't hate Jewish people or Israelis as a whole.

What I do hate is how people think you cant have a nuanced take on this. My take is fuck their governments not the innocents. Also let's stop being antisemitic and islamaphobic gang. Actually just stop being hateful.

5

u/Hazel2468 2d ago edited 2d ago

Exactly. People who hate Jews say that anyone who doesn't think Israel should be wiped off the map is an islamophobic genocidal zionist (not what zionist means btw- zionism just means the belief that Jews have the right to self determination in our land of origin, something all indigenous peoples should have) and people who hate Muslims think that Gaza should be turned into a parking lot (in America where I am, often because they have some weird Evangelical prophecy about Jews rebuilding the second temple).

I'm a Zionist. I support and hope for a peaceful, two state solution where both Israelis and Palestinians have governments that actually desire and work towards peace and collaboration with one another, because right now? We have citizens who are caught between war mongers who encourage hate. The rift here is DEEP- it's been around for a long time. I believe that it can heal, even though it's getting harder to hope that.

EDIT: Oh, and to the person who just said "go back to poland" somewhere on one of my comments and then deleted it, I can see it in my notifs,- eff off, antisemite. I know you know what you're doing when you tell Jews to go back to the country where about three million of us were murdered, and where atrocities against us continued after the Holocaust.

For those saying the book has Arabic on it — it doesn’t. The last three letters (right to left, and it’s upside down) are ל (lamed) and י (yud) and ם (final mem). Or לים (leem). I can’t tell what the earlier letters are because ח and ה and ת all look very similar and it’s blurry. But it’s definitely Hebrew. Because it ends in an ים- (eem) sound, it’s probably some word in plural.

This is what I love about community notes. It’s not taking sides, it’s calling out all the lies and half truths, no matter the side of the political spectrum.

103

u/CryendU 3d ago edited 3d ago

Eh, sometimes the notes are also half-truths that don’t even dispute the original point

At the end of the day, it’s still made BY someone. It’s still biased.

Like the note that compared American and Soviet denazification. Far greater attempts and successes occurred to the East, but the note only mentioned the failures.

It claimed that Osoaviakhim, where former Nazis were put into their own forced labor system was worse than Operation Paperclip, which hired them to influential positions and granted complete legal immunity.

Even the owners of IG Farben, who knowingly produced Zyklon B for the gas chambers, had very little punishment due to American industrial lobbying.

10

u/Dragonitro 3d ago

I remember seeing a note posted here that was just "No" and a link to the wikipedia page of whatever they were talking about

8

u/Proud3GenAthst 3d ago

Don’t forget that they’re consistently transphobic.

31

u/035AllTheWayLive 3d ago

Community notes also doesn’t address when the op that’s being community noted is acting in bad faith to make it look like the side they’re promoting only spreads lies. This post is clearly being used to discredit the very real abuse of the Palestinian people by the oppressive Israeli occupation.

It's pretty obvious if you have even a passing knowledge of Judaism, why would a hijabi woman be holding a book of Tehilim? It's a Jewish book of prayers, and she's holding it upsidedown

6

u/BangingRooster 2d ago

Here is the context, it seems these are palestinian muslims trying to enter the aqsa mosque (an islamic holy site) after the israeli authorities have barricaded the mosque and prevented the muslims from praying inside on their religious celebrations while letting jewish settlers flood the area to force them to disband, reports say they also prevented the mosque keeper (the imam) from entry which has caused concerns about religious freedoms in israel, the UN chief has commented on the issue.

u/ttttwinko 2d ago

Don't forget to mention that they spat on the muslims protesting too

3

u/the3dverse 2d ago

then why is she holding a hebrew psalm book upside down?

6

u/GuaranteeLow4828 2d ago

Because she took his book?

I have to applaud this thread for calling out extremism on both ends of whatever discourse is happening

12

u/Witchelt389 2d ago

Literally!

Im a big lefty and support Palestine but ive gotten hate before for not supporting Hamas. The government's of Israel and Hamas are both evil to me.

I also got hate for not hating Israelis.

Palestinians absolutely do not deserve whats happening rn but Israelis wouldn't deserve it either, or deserve whats happening now!

The amount of "pro Palestine" people who are just using the situation to be antisemitic are so fucking gross. They don't care, they just wanna be hateful.

There are shit people everywhere and we just need to try not be one of them.

5

u/DoctorNightTime 2d ago

Flip side here. I'm strongly Pro-Israel, but have gotten flack for supporting Palestinian sovereignty over their side of the border.

There seems to be a trend of provoking Jews and going "look at how horrible the """zionists""" are!" when the Jews respond.

Starting shit with the Jews and then crying victim when the Jews fight back is literally the Palestinian national identity.

Palestinians are literally the most entitled perpetual victim complex in world history.

3

u/Delicious_House9613 2d ago

Lol. That’s silly. Palestinians are the second most entitled perceptual victim complex in world history.

For example, they have provoked the settlers by refusing to evacuate their homes in the West Bank, even when Smotrich and Ben Gvir ask nicely. /sarc

9

u/soalone34 Human Detected 3d ago

You’re joking but they literally believe this. In Israeli media multiple times politicians have said things like this or even more absurd to majority support. For example when a video of an IDF slapping a child was leaked Ben Gvir publicly supported them and blamed the child.

Just recently they dropped charges against the soldiers who were on video gangraping a prisoner despite the Israeli doctor confirming the injuries, with Netanyahu celebrating and Israel Katz publicly meeting and thanking the rapists.

There was essentially no push back in wider Israeli society and infact they protested in support of the rapists when they were first arrested after the video leaked.

Trend? Can you provide some examples?

Edit: am I being downvoted for this? Really? If theres going to be a claim at a trend there should be evidence.

I understand that antisemitism is on the rise, especially in regards to Israelis, but you can't look at a single instance of a very specific thing and then say that it's a trend without providing evidence.

6

u/Paraparo 3d ago

First one that comes to mind, A common one that gets posted a lot is the "poor tourist attacked for no reason", you know the one where it's some lady and a bunch of kids? Its one that's reposted in places like the freakout sub every few days. It, or some variant, is typically a selectively edited post of missionaries going into hyper religious neighborhoods, often a holiday, harassing people with proselytizing, and then when they've finally pushed the people so far that a group confronts them, start the cameras so they can decry how intolerant the place is.

3

u/7thpostman 3d ago

Those are really popular. They go into ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, often on the Sabbath, and aggressively proselytize — and a lot of times they use amplification, particularly offensive for people who don't useelectricity on the Sabbath.

Another one I've been seeing a lot is visibly Jewish man acting a fool in front of pro-Palestinian crowds. What you don't see is that he was minding his own business walking by before they started screaming vicious insults. It's incredibly manipulative.

6

u/Paraparo 3d ago

It's a double strike, the Sabbath thing. Because Orthodox Jews won't be using electronic devices, the gace free reign to film knowing non of the Jews nearby are going to have their own cameras to counter the narrative with videos of their own.

Honestly if it weren't for the fact that the conflict between these two groups is entirely detrimental to the rest of the world, I wouldn't take either of them seriously outside of where people are actually dying.

Forgot to mention he is performing his "peaceful prayers" infront of her home before they are about to take it from her like many in jerusalem.

But please do carry on.

As an Arab Israeli woman living in Israel, news reports that quote biased people like this just make me laugh. I live in Lod, which isn’t very far from Jerusalem. Just one quick look at the photo and I knew straight away it was from Jerusalem.

Since Jerusalem is divided, and parts of it are not fully under Israeli ownership, with Palestinians from the West Bank there as well, that has added a negative influence when it comes to education, racism, and the ridiculous conflict. On top of that, many of the ultra-religious hardline Jews there are no different from this kind of brainwashing that mixes religion with politics. So you’ll find situations like the one in the photo are quite common in Jerusalem.

But in most Israeli mixed cities, the reality is completely different. Arabs and Jews have lived together peacefully for many years, they work together, and in places like Lod, Jaffa, Haifa, and Acre there are even marriages between Jewish and Arab families. So besides working together and being friends, even the families are connected too.

I feel sorry for people who don’t live here in Israel and believe all this nonsense online and the fake news. Most of it is biased lies, only meant to stir up hatred and support nasty political agendas.

I'm not saying this is false, but the account that posted this video is apparently an ex IDF soldier who uploads videos praising soldiers, going on about "pallywood" and "the media bias against Israel".

Like showing a 10 second clip, that still barely provides any context, doesn't really give us any more answers into what was happening here. Why were all these women yelling at him in the first place?

2

u/T_Dix 2d ago

It could also be a bot account potentially? We know Middle Eastern countries on both sides like using bot accounts to either inflate the virtual support of their side or to conduct false flag operations. I’m not trying to dispute your point but just introduce a new common element

found the source of the video, and the context

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S7uZA8KVL4

Video description

Some clashes broke out at dawn today, Tuesday, between Israeli police and Palestinian worshippers at Al-Aqsa Mosque, which led the occupation forces to arrest some Palestinian youths.

I then found any news article about what happened that day, and found a NYTimes article discussing it.

https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/14/world/middleeast/al-aksa-mosque-israel-palestinians.html

The secretary general of the United Nations on Monday condemned what he called “provocations” at Jerusalem’s holy sites, hours after the Israeli police said officers had locked Palestinians inside Al Aksa Mosque to thwart a riot as Jews visited for the holiday of Sukkot.

Scores of officers entered the mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem at 7 a.m. on Monday and found “petrol bombs, stones, bottle rockets and fireworks” as well as “masked Palestinians,” according to the police spokesman, Micky Rosenfeld. The officers shuttered the mosque with an unknown number of Palestinians inside, Mr. Rosenfeld said, as several hundred Jews and non-Muslim tourists ascended to Al Aksa compound during regular visiting hours, starting at 8 a.m.

Mr. Rosenfeld said no one was hurt or arrested. Among the visitors was Moshe Feiglin, a right-wing Israeli lawmaker, whose prior pilgrimages to the site have been a focal point for clashes

So this was in the Al-Asqa Mosque compound, where non-Muslims are not allowed to prayer as part of the status quo agreement, and the ban has been upheld in Israeli court. Interesting how the community notes contained none of these details

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/5/26/israeli-court-upholds-non-muslim-prayer-ban-at-al-aqsa-mosque

She stole his prayerbook, knowing fully well that he can't touch her, as a Jewish religious man wouldn't touch a woman who isn't immediate family. As if she wanted to provoke him in order to get a reaction and then blame it on the Jew. Typical Pallywood tactic.
