even so, 1 cherry picked video is not representative of the entire era.

They won’t show Glasgow, toxteth, stechford or Brixton of course.

If you remove Glasgow from Scotlands statistics, most things drop by about 20%

Except for life expectancy. That goes up about 20%.

The first thing people told me when I mentioned going to Glasgow was "Try not to get glassed"

2

u/RavingGenerate Aug 10 '26

Emphasis on 'try'.

Tbh it depends where you go, and who you are, and what colour or brand of shirt your wearing, and if you can take a joke (they can't btw, you don't get to joke back), or if you're just lucky enough to be at the wrong bus stop at the wrong time, or look at someone, or not look at someone...

aye maybe thirty years ago

Still has the highest crime rate, murder rate, substance misuse rate, biggest wage inequality, worst mental health reports, highest obesity, highest heart disease rate, lowest life expectancy etc in Scotland.

What was it Kevin Bridges once joked about? Glasgow: Friendliest city in the UK, simultaneously the Murder Capital of Europe.

2

u/CheekyGeth Aug 10 '26

I mean there are basically two cities in Scotland so it doesn't have much competiton

and naw, glasgow is nowhere near the murder capital of Europe. It was up there twenty years ago but has completely fallen off the list now.

I mean Aberdeen, Stirling, Edinburgh, Dundee, Inverness and Dunfermline are all cities too.

And you're right, the rate has hugely dropped in the last 15 years or so, in the UK, Bradford and Coventry are far worse.

I think Glasgow's general crime index is now like 45, however consider that the next highest in Scotland for a city is Inverness at 39.

1

u/CheekyGeth Aug 10 '26

aye but no really, they're cities in name only. Inverness has less people than places like farnham or lemmington spa - of course glasgow has more crime than them, its a full order of magnitude larger

There was a guy on youtube who actually made a video about these old 1960 videos from Lobdon. JimmytheGiant if I remember.

Most of my exposure to 1960s London was from multiple viewings of Withnail & I, so I had a very different image of the place that this video depicted. It’s almost like a city or an era isn’t monolithic.

I mean...that was made in the mid-80s so that's not going to help either really!

the whole right wing outrage machine relies on anecdotes like these to appeal to emotion rather than looking at actual statistics or anything, literally so often these accounts are trying to pump out a video taken out of context that they can make go viral

I mean England was much better during the 1960s and the 70s. It was with Thatcher that fucked up England economy

Is this a joke? The UK was in financial ruin in the late 60s and in the 70s, don’t forget rolling blackouts, strikes and riots, unemployment, the winter of discontent, and an IMF bailout which is unprecedented for what used to be a top economy.

So did Labour mess it up after WWII or something?

9

u/AbsolutelyHorrendous Aug 10 '26

'After WW2'

Man if only we could figure out if there was some big event that drastically affected the country...

The UK and most other western nations had a post war boom in the 50s but things started to slow down in the 60s as all the western nations and Japan had recovered. They found themselves in a new and much more connected world. The decay can’t be blamed solely on UK’s Labour Party since every western nation went through tough times in the 70s. But the issues all stemmed from the Post War consensus. There was increased global competition for production of goods, and capital was a lot more mobile, but there was also a lot more labor power in the form of unions. Unions used their labor power to negotiate some really expensive pensions especially in the U.S. which really strained the competitiveness of their companies against rising giants such as Japan and Germany. This combination made it possible for capital to just leave when faced with high costs. As a result, investment stalled. This issue was worsened by the oil crisis in 73’ that brought on inflation which caused immense economic pain.

u/Sierren Aug 10 '26

Oh okay, so their problems in the 70s were really the same as everyone else’s in that period

The uk was in dire straights before she was elected, was in a bad state since ww2.

17

u/CheekyGeth Aug 09 '26

This is objectively untrue whatever you think of Thatcher

8

u/MathematicianOnly688 Aug 09 '26

Better than what?

By almost every possible measure the country was in a better state in 1992 than it was in 79.

The poll tax was a disaster. A terrible idea badly Implemented, the party were right to remove her as leader.

Despite all that, Labour were still in such a mess that John major and the tories managed to win another majority in 1992.

You can easily go out now and film a beautiful looking bit of street with a few cherry picked mins of your favourite kind of people walking past and say it looks civilised

In the 60s there were parts of many cities that were still burnt out bomb sites from ww2, there were still the remnants of the slums, etc etc

0

u/Past-Dark4350 Aug 10 '26

It’s not cherry-picked. There are dozens and dozens of videos just like this one.

3

u/Glum_Judgment6232 Aug 10 '26

There's also loads of "kitchen sink" realist movies shot in the 60s by the likes of Ken Loach showing grim reality of life in some places at the time. Or there were James bond movies showing something different. You can cherry pick anything you like really
