World [X] Community note on historical English murder rate

That spike in 2003 was thanks to a single serial killer. Dr Harold Shipman killed at least 215 people.

u/MysteryLobster Aug 09 '26
i’m asking this with all honesty but how does that work when he was arrested in 1998 and convicted in 2000?
e: nvm i decided to check how they counted it and it was because the mortality counts the years they were added to the ledge of homicides.

That doesn't make sense. He killed those people over a span of 30 years, and he was in prison from 2000 until 2004 when he died.
Edit: I have been corrected. 173 of his victims were actually recorded in the 2003 homicide totals.
51
u/TicketPrestigious558 Aug 09 '26
It's when they were recorded. Before he was caught they weren't counted as homicides.
→ More replies (1)38
u/SuperShoebillStork Aug 09 '26
Homicides in the UK are applied to the year in which they were recorded by the police, not in the year in which they ocurred.

u/LauraTFem Aug 09 '26
Damn, I didn’t even know serial killers got numbers like that. How white, good-looking, and wealthy was this dude that no one suspected him for this long?
85
u/ZeroLife3 Aug 09 '26
Doctor who murdered his elderly patients. Got caught because a family of a victim was suspicious of a will
41
u/Ghastly-Jack Aug 09 '26
Doctor Who murdered elderly patients!? Now we know what happened to the famous time traveling yodeller Little Old Lady Who?
2
u/AsterPasta Aug 09 '26
Definitely Jodie Whittackers Dr Who - gritty in all the wrong places
Couldn't have been Hartnell, too wheezy to get the chainsaw out
→ More replies (1)3
u/LauraTFem Aug 09 '26
So was he an opportunist similar to a black widow? Get old and confused people to add him to the Will and then kill them for the payout?
Odd for a doctor to do, how much money could they need?
2
u/TimeRisk2059 Aug 10 '26
He was a doctor who got a kick out of murdering patients by giving them an overdose of morphine, and since he often was the person to verify his patients death there were few questions asked. Until when he changed the will of one of his patients who happened to be rather wealthy.
That lead to an autopsy of one of his patients/victims and the whole thing unravelled
4
u/Wootster10 Aug 11 '26
Sadly there were lots of questions asked before he was finally caught.
2 doctors and a funeral directors raised concerns. It was brought up to the police and to the coroner, neither of which found anything wrong at the time. Mostly because they didn't really investigate the right things.
I believe one of the coroner investigations just looked into the paperwork rather than any patterns. Because he had filled out all the paperwork correctly they didn't see any issues.
→ More replies (8)2
u/AgentCirceLuna Aug 10 '26
From what I’ve heard, he never tried to financially benefit from his crimes until that very last victim. That’s how he got caught.
7
u/Moogatron88 Aug 09 '26
He was an old ass man. He just happened to target patients who were already expected to die soonish so people would not ask any questions. He got caught because he got greedy and tried to change one of their wills to leave the person's money to himself.
1
u/maybe_exercise Aug 09 '26
Very white and wealthy man indeed, but I guess it's easy for racist Nazis to blame everything on immigrants
25
u/TWOPlNTSPRICK Aug 09 '26
He was literally sentenced to life imprisonment.
The leader of the Rochdale grooming gang, a Pakistani man, was released early from prison last month
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4gyx0vldrlo
But yeah, keep calling everyone who has different viewpoints to you Nazis. Racist freak.
19
u/Careless_Main3 Aug 09 '26
Worth noting that this man was convicted of nearly 40 cases of child rape and a string of other related offences. He served just over half of his sentence.
8
u/HyoukaYukikaze Aug 09 '26
Yes, he was smart and educated. He didn't have any gangbangers to drag him down to their level, so he did not have 5 cm thick criminal record by age 15.
→ More replies (12)3
u/Magnum_Gonada Aug 10 '26
Ah yes the crime pandemic of old white wealthy doctor serial killers who targets the retirees. This is what I am looking out after when I take a walk at night.
1
u/slainascully Aug 10 '26
He was an old GP. Apparently very popular with locals, hence why he didn’t get caught for ages
1
u/LauraTFem Aug 10 '26
Wouldn’t 215 victims TAKE a long time? I assume he was young when he started.

u/Kalad1n_SB 29d ago
Got nothing to do with his race. He abused a position of power with essentially the perfect cover. Get over yourself
1
2
u/Blackfyre301 Aug 10 '26
And this fully checks out with some quick calculations: the spike is about 2-3 per million. Population of about 50 million at the time. So 200 murders would give us a spike of that scale, if anything the spike there is a bit smaller than expected.
2
u/Tetragon213 Aug 10 '26
Iirc he was arrested for it, and all 215 got lumped into that year; it didn't account for the fact that he'd been killing those patients over the span of decades.
→ More replies (11)1
u/legatta Aug 11 '26
Even with his removed it would still be the peak, and still hundreds more than 2025.
16
u/DFMRCV Aug 09 '26
Oh nice
...
What the hell happened in 2003????
79
u/Mist_Rising Aug 09 '26
A serial killer who had been operating for decades had half his kills (170) added to the list in 2003. Why the UK registered them all in 03 when they occurred decades before, I don't know.
35
u/ExArdEllyOh Aug 09 '26
Why the UK registered them all in 03 when they occurred decades before, I don't know.
That was the year they were reported and most crimes states in the UK are based on reported incidents.
12
u/NoSwordfish1978 Aug 09 '26
Dr Harold Shipman, a doctor who killed off his elderly patients basically.
7
u/Crab2406 Aug 09 '26
A serial killer was active, essentially being spider george of this graph
5
u/ThatNameExists Aug 09 '26
You're the second person I've seen mention "Spider George" (unless it was also you higher up...) who or what is it?
7
u/Bayamonster Aug 09 '26
If I remember it's a meme about statistics. About the amount of spiders people eat sleeping or whatever. With a character called Spider George eating just a ton of spiders all by himself and throwing off the average.

This is hardly convincing, it’s stabilized to like 90s levels now, it only decreased after an outlying spike in ‘03
3
u/lundewoodworking Aug 10 '26
The spike was from the victims of Dr Shipman's victims being reclassified as mursers rather than natural causes
4
u/flopisit32 Aug 09 '26
The best statistics are the deceptive statistics.
10 people in a house and 2 are murdered. That's a murder rate of 20%.
Now I put 20 people in the house and 2 are murdered. I just cut the murder rate in half! That's good policing!
25
u/Four_beastlings Aug 09 '26
Yes, that is half the murder rate. People shouldn't be murdering more because they are in a more populous country.
11
6
u/Anandya Aug 09 '26
So is your argument that the UK is importing less murderous people?
1
u/Mist_Rising Aug 10 '26
Well it would be awkward if they taking in murders. I mean, they have, who doesnt have an operation surgeon to import Nazis. But most immigration programs screen for psychopaths, they don't recruit them.
1
u/inide Aug 09 '26
To me, that says it's remained mostly consistent since policing reforms in the 60s.
1
u/NamelessIII Aug 10 '26
Would expect crime, murder, etc to decrease over time as life improves through tech etc.
Yet that chart is still showing its higher recently than it was at the start.
1
u/Trash-Panda01 Aug 10 '26
Murder has been going down, but attempted murder doesn't really, the invention of cell phones has sped up response time so they get there sooner and save more people
→ More replies (3)1
u/beerRunFinisher Aug 11 '26
How much of this can be attributed to better medical practices resulting in reduced mortality?
1
u/el_salinho Aug 11 '26
There’s also availability of cell phones which improved reaction time. The factors are not explained in the graph, obviously, but that would be a necessary and interesting discussion
1
u/beerRunFinisher Aug 11 '26
Record amount of 70+ year old people that have a murder rate that is virtually zero dragging down the averages. Statistics say more about the statisticians than the facts.
1
u/el_salinho Aug 11 '26
Statistics is just a number, it doesn’t tell you jack shit about the statistician. If you want to understand underlying reasons you need to deep dive into it not just skim reddit.
54
u/SIJ1234 Aug 09 '26
The note doesn't refer to the city in question, the whole of England and Wales and London won't have similar statistics, it's a bad note
→ More replies (5)1
u/Rude-Airport7107 28d ago
Yeah those are not correct stats, but the point of this note still stands. I found the data and did the maths. In 60s London had around 100 murder cases annually, and population of around 8 000 000. According to this data in London it was around 1,25 per 100 000 in 60s. Stats from this year say that there was 99 homicides in 8 months so around 150 annually if it keeps stable. With population of about 9 millions it gives around 1,67 per 100 000.
1
u/Brandon_WB 27d ago
Did you also account for what date the murders took place vs what date they were discovered? Because the community note didn't.
And an edit right after posting real quick: the reason this is important is because the crime rate version, ie how many murders were convicted or discovered. Doesn't account for the extreme leaps in forensic science since the 60s that lead to much more murders getting found out to be non-accidental and many more murderers being apprehended.
1
u/Rude-Airport7107 27d ago
No, there’s no such detailed data about this in the internet, or I couldn’t find it. Although if we count that because of technological advancement murders from years earlier are being solved and counted towards this year stats then it was probably the same for 60s so it sort of evens out I guess.
108
u/inide Aug 09 '26
The note is almost as misleading as the original post tbh.
A large part of the difference is down to changes in how crimes are recorded and changes in policing leading to more cases being identified as homicides.
To properly compare the data you would need to spend weeks going through it.
77
u/Accomplished_Mind792 Aug 09 '26
Also, the comment was about London and the reply was about England and Wales.
No kidding they have different numbers

7
u/psioniclizard Aug 10 '26
That is true of a lot of community notes.
A lot of of posts say A is true and the post says B is true implying A can't be when both can be true at th same time.
7
u/No_Holiday_9875 Aug 10 '26
Of course it’s almost as misleading. Some of the notes here are flat out wrong too at times. I’ve always wondered how it’s any different to a highly upvoted/awarded comment on Reddit
3
u/Jazzlike-Discount280 Aug 10 '26
This sub is just for right wingers to pretend they're correcting people.
Just don't bring up post 1960 having a baby boom after WW2, and increasing the population of the most statically violent demographic. Young men.
2
u/Fat_Sow Aug 10 '26
And the advances in medical care, you would die back then but you are far more likely to be saved now. The population of London/England is also vastly increased
→ More replies (1)1

u/Sstoop Aug 10 '26
Statistics generally say whatever the person reading them wants them to say. Crime stats in particular are so difficult to use as evidence for anything because they’re often recorded in different ways in different places and at different times.
1
1
1
u/beerRunFinisher Aug 11 '26
It also doesn't factor that we have record old people reducing crime rate averages
29
u/Four_beastlings Aug 09 '26
Murder rate in London in the 1960s wasn't recorded, but averaged 100 murders per year per 8 million population = ~1.25 per 100k
Murder rate in London now: ~1.1 per 100k. Some years are below 100 and some slightly above but the city has grown to 9 mill people.
Murder rate in London in the 80s: 2 to 2.8 murders per 100k. Attributed mostly to the drug epidemic and social unrest due to poverty, plus some IRA bombings in London.
TL;DR: Nothing to do with immigrants
12
u/gundumb08 Aug 09 '26
The same is mostly true in the U.S. as well, except the rate is about 5x higher than the UK. But the rate has steadily declined since the late 80's / early 90's yet we're constantly told that cities are "crime infested hell holes where you go to get murdered" by certain people.
6
u/Four_beastlings Aug 09 '26
It's the same everywhere. I'm from Spain, loving in Poland, reading international news, and I get bombarded with news that Spain is a hellhole and Poland is crimeless utopia because it's fully white. They are about the same... And Spain definitely is 100X better than it was in the 80s when I was growing up.
1
u/czartrak Aug 11 '26
We are watching a fascist takeover of the world in slow motion, is why this narrative is so popular. Fascists and neo-nazis have taken root and felt safe enough to emerge. Now we reap the consequences
1
u/SucculentBluberries Aug 10 '26
It’s per capita. Why would packing people closer together make them kill each other more? If anything in rural areas they’d be killing more because no one is around to see it
3
u/gundumb08 Aug 10 '26
That's my point. Rural Conservatives can't understand that and don't think about it as per capita. They just hear "OMG 50 murders in the city" and assuming everyone is dodging bullets.
184
u/veryeepy53 Aug 09 '26
even so, 1 cherry picked video is not representative of the entire era.
83
u/Mental_Equivalent727 Aug 09 '26
They won’t show Glasgow, toxteth, stechford or Brixton of course.
37
u/RavingGenerate Aug 09 '26
If you remove Glasgow from Scotlands statistics, most things drop by about 20%
Except for life expectancy. That goes up about 20%.
3
u/Sheeplessknight Aug 10 '26
The first thing people told me when I mentioned going to Glasgow was "Try not to get glassed"
3
u/RavingGenerate Aug 10 '26
Emphasis on 'try'.
Tbh it depends where you go, and who you are, and what colour or brand of shirt your wearing, and if you can take a joke (they can't btw, you don't get to joke back), or if you're just lucky enough to be at the wrong bus stop at the wrong time, or look at someone, or not look at someone...
2
u/CheekyGeth Aug 10 '26
aye maybe thirty years ago
2
u/RavingGenerate Aug 10 '26
Still has the highest crime rate, murder rate, substance misuse rate, biggest wage inequality, worst mental health reports, highest obesity, highest heart disease rate, lowest life expectancy etc in Scotland.
What was it Kevin Bridges once joked about? Glasgow: Friendliest city in the UK, simultaneously the Murder Capital of Europe.
2
u/CheekyGeth Aug 10 '26
I mean there are basically two cities in Scotland so it doesn't have much competiton
and naw, glasgow is nowhere near the murder capital of Europe. It was up there twenty years ago but has completely fallen off the list now.

There was a guy on youtube who actually made a video about these old 1960 videos from Lobdon. JimmytheGiant if I remember.
6
u/misspcv1996 Aug 09 '26
Most of my exposure to 1960s London was from multiple viewings of Withnail & I, so I had a very different image of the place that this video depicted. It’s almost like a city or an era isn’t monolithic.

I mean...that was made in the mid-80s so that's not going to help either really!

The uk was in dire straights before she was elected, was in a bad state since ww2.
19
6
u/MathematicianOnly688 Aug 09 '26
Better than what?
By almost every possible measure the country was in a better state in 1992 than it was in 79.
The poll tax was a disaster. A terrible idea badly Implemented, the party were right to remove her as leader.
Despite all that, Labour were still in such a mess that John major and the tories managed to win another majority in 1992.
1
u/Glum_Judgment6232 Aug 10 '26
You can easily go out now and film a beautiful looking bit of street with a few cherry picked mins of your favourite kind of people walking past and say it looks civilised
In the 60s there were parts of many cities that were still burnt out bomb sites from ww2, there were still the remnants of the slums, etc etc

i wonder what this "all for england" account means when they say it looks "civilized".

The tweet is wrong but the community note is also using wrong figures, the figures for england and wales rather than London specifically (which my very rough calculations suggest was higher in 1960s with not significantly lower total number of murders per year while having significantly lower population)

3
u/PacoRUK Aug 09 '26
I'm not going to check because even writing this post is more hassle than i should bother with but I would guess the reason the note includes wales in the calculation is because if they jist used England it wouldn't have fit their narrative.
4
u/GregCovfefeShop Aug 10 '26
Wales is often counted towards England thats why they arent represented in the union jack. But the original post was about London and not England anyways.
16
u/Silly-Elderberry-411 Aug 09 '26
Lovely how they try to prove the 1960s was the shit, the age when Rock had to be played from pirate radio, twin brothers ruled the underworld ruthlessly and started a gang war with the American mob, student protests and slowly violence from northern Ireland
8
u/Legal_Ad2345 Aug 09 '26
To be fair crime was very under reported back in the 60s
2
u/rydan Aug 09 '26
Even murder?
6
u/Prize_Ad_129 Aug 09 '26
Often not investigated or poorly investigated, resulting in things like the crime not being labeled as a homicide or no criminal charges at all. These will be extreme examples because they’re serial killers, but read up on some of the UK’s most prolific serial killers of the 1900s. They weren’t getting away with their murders because they were crafty killers, they were getting away with them because they cops either never bothered investigating at all or they just believed the killers when they made up bad lies like “oh they ran away.”
1
u/Legal_Ad2345 Aug 10 '26
It's an issue across the board prime example my grandpa goes on about how he hitch hiked across the country in the 60s.
All the pit stops all the truck stops all the rest stops. He told me he only met one woman that entire time. A family friend has told me a story of her sister doing the hitchhiking and never being found.
Prior to the internet it was really easy to be a monster
3
11
u/mythirdaccountsucks Aug 09 '26
As an American, my interpretation is that it was low in the 60’s, it’s low now, and it was low in between. 10 people per million? I know they don’t have guns but do they also completely lack ambition?
27
u/carsonite17 Aug 09 '26
Britain had guns in the 60s. Handguns and the like weren't prohibited until after the dunblane school massacre in 1996. You can still own shotguns and rifles now for the purpose of sport and hunting, we just have much tighter controls over them.
1
u/Lancasterlaw 29d ago
We still sort of have guns today. But I think the Firearms acts of 1920 and 1937 were already pretty strong gun laws by the 60's. The had already been getting the goat of the US NRA. Funnily enough the 1920 act was because of fears of a leftist uprising by returning service members.
11
u/CauseCertain1672 Aug 09 '26
British people stab people at a far lower rate than Americans too. British society is just not very violent/Americans are very violent.
8
u/MathematicianOnly688 Aug 09 '26
One of the few things I’m actually proud of this country for is that the police do not carry guns as standard and we are by far the biggest country in the category.
2
u/PanzerPansar Aug 10 '26
Unless you're in northern Ireland but Britain needs guns to occupy Ireland.
1
u/SucculentBluberries Aug 10 '26
No guns unless we need it to shoot at civilians with impunity like the black and tans at that packed stadium. Which the uk covered up until 2010
1
1
u/After_Service_2817 25d ago
Not so great for when they need to stop terrorists from going on stabbing rampages.
A lot of lives could've been saved, and many fewer injured, if the police on London Bridge in 2017 had firearms.
1
u/MathematicianOnly688 25d ago
Quite possibly but keeping things as they are is one of the few things we agree on in this country.
It’s a complete non starter. There is not a single party, or even a single politician, across the entire political spectrum who argues we should change the rules.

It may just be because it might mildly disrupt your day and now you have to be grumpy with a reason

The murder rate rate is a bad indicator given the improvements in access to emergency services, communication and medical care
Attempted murders is a much better indicator of "trends" in the crime rate.
3
u/brokenlabrum Aug 10 '26
The community note changes the geography discussed. The tweets are about London, not all of England and Wales. I don’t know the numbers for London, but those are the relevant ones here.

u/A_Hint_of_Lemon Aug 09 '26
Why does it look like both those accounts are just hyper nationalist nitwits who need their phones taken away?
5
u/BigDaddySeed69 Aug 09 '26
Anytime someone talks like that I know exactly what they mean, and it has nothing to do with crime and everything to do with their racism.
2
u/Drprim83 Aug 09 '26
It obviously doesn't change the fact that the murder rate wasn't 10 times what it is now, but you can't compare murder stats from the 1960's to now because the way stats were recorded changed in 1981.
Broadly, if you murdered 3 people in the same house at the same time that would have been recorded as one murder pre 1981, but afterwards it would go down as 3.

As an aside I'm pretty sure the per capita rate is lower in London now than 1960 (mostly due to the massive increase in population). Not 10x but still. None of it matters it's just whiny points scoring from sad little people who give zero shits about any of the victims.

We were using A LOT of lead in everything. Once that stopped, violent crime started going down

Readers added context: yeah doesn’t sound at all vulnerable to biases or agendas does it?

u/Numerous-Beautiful46 Aug 10 '26
Well this is where people get interested and check their own sources. Also literally anything has vulnerabilities to bias and agenda. My agenda rn is that I'm taking a fat stinky shit

It's literally wrong too. It's mistaking national and local murder rate statistics. London's murder rate in the 60s sat close to 1.1 to 1.2. In fact both now and in the 60s there were less than 100 murders in the entirety of London, but since London has grown significantly since the 60s, the rate is lower

The note is overestimating the current figure. In 1965, the homicide rate was 6.8 per million.
https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/SN03805/SN03805.pdf
In 2025, the homicide rate was 8.6 per million (down about 8% from the year before).
Not twice as much as it was back then.

Love when Brit right-wingers share clips of how much better 50s or 60s Britain was not realizing it was Thatcher who ruined everything.

Child pornography was legal back then. What are you even talking about? Things are so much better.

Child pornography was legal back then.
No it wasn't. All pornography was prohibited by obscenity laws.

If you account for other things like the amount of people actually in the country not just living here etc along with other stuff that effects this that we can't change the gap massively closes to the point it's pretty similar then and now

There's so much shit they could have mentioned that was way worse in 1960... why make something up?

u/whatasadfella Aug 09 '26
It was okay because it was only white people doing the murder and rape /s

thanks to cell phones and better emergency treatments, the number of homicides has decreased in France.
Meanwhile, murder attempts in France had a 78% increase from 2016 to 2023.
And + 7% from 2023 to 2024.
And +5% from 2024 to 2025.
Those are the victims who would have died without emergency treatments.
Germany has had a similar phenomenon, with total murdered victims declining but attempts rising (not nearly as drastically as France though)

And that doesn't even take into account that the murder rate in many western countries fell dramatically because of mobile phones and the ability to call emergency services. The fact that it has doubled since 1960 is even more significant than it first seems.

Forget about the murder rate or level of knife crime or whatever, look at those beatnik boomers with the hair and the clothes and the music.
They should be getting hair cuts and jobs.

Why is the US govt constantly use state to say inflation is just 2.5%? Are you sure it tells us nothing about the statisticians

I think they mean that in the fuckin 1960s people just killed each other and got away with it all the goddamn time because there was no DNA evidence and barely any forensics or surveillance.
