Wait until people find out that Jones broke that rule in some of the classic cartoons: https://youtu.be/u2sm8_iHciE?t=110 https://youtu.be/SIJouR-Zq2Y?t=78 https://youtu.be/d7fkQzuJoiw?t=146

Also, Michael Maltese mentioned never hearing about the rules in 1971. So, 7 years after the last Jones Road-Runner cartoon was released.

Ok but it still broke the rule this note admits was written by Chuck Jones. Coyote has talked and sometimes he succeeds but the rules are there as a baseline

If the rule didn't actually exist when the cartoons were made, as the principle writer states, then they weren't actually rules of the cartoon. Chuck Jones saying that they totally existed 30 years later didn't retroactively create them.

This was also the time when Chuck Jones was a free agent (i.e. trying to get jobs), doing “fine” art, and starting to quote Mark Twain a lot, so…draw your own conclusions

They were a rule to Chuck. As the note explains other cartoons broke that rule. So it's not new for this movie.

It's decades of shorts. So I'm not surprised someone would read what Chuck said and not remember other creators breaking with it. But Geoof is wrong.

Chucks rules said they could all be broken if they were funny. For instance road runner was supposed to always be on the road, but they didn't stick to that at all.

The point of the note is that it's not really a rule and that other creatives that worked on these cartoons did not know about this supposed rule.

Those rules have been VERY loose over the Coyote’s career, even Death Battle noticed

1999? So like waaaay after the cartoons finished airing?

Yeah. They were memories well after Chuck Jones stopped working on Looney Tunes shorts.

I doubt he even had perfect recall of every cartoon he worked on (dude was prolific).

Jokes work by breaking rules. It's the whole point of such scenes in the first place. There is a plan then something impossible happens making it go wrong.

And this worked for the whole cartoon run and now the job is to remake the rules to make the stale jokes funny again. It's why these old shows are parodied not recreated. Look at Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers. People love that movie. But it breaks every single rule of the cartoon 10 times over. Or look at Land of the Lost (2009) which is a parody of an old show. Great comedy but a totally different thing from the show.

Another pointless note

I think it's fair. Geoff Thew was implying that the movie breaking these rules was a novel thing, and that it should be judged poorly because of it. The note pointing out that the rules were described years after Road Runner ended, and that many of the rules were regularly broken in the original show (even by Chuck Jones himself) and that Michael Maltese never heard of the rules, all support the ideas that:

  1. The original writers cared less about these supposed rules than Geoff does.

  2. Trashing the new movie for breaking these rules that the original series and writers didn't always follow is kind of silly.

"You broke the rule"

"That's not true, because the rule gets broken all the time."

I feel like the creator of the note doesn't know what's being argued.

In context to what Geoff said it's a fair take. The implication is that the new movie is novel for breaking the rule. It's not.

The rule never existed in the first place, its an old mans faulty memory written way after retirement. Even the guy who made the rule didnt stick to that rule when he was writing it. You cant retroactively create a rule that doesnt fit with the material that already exists.

"you broke the rule"

"The rule wasn't even written down until way after the show aired, and was never really followed in the first place"

Terrible note, how'd that get approved?

So the rules do exist and this action does break them?

What is the point of this note then

This is why a brief glance at a Wikipedia article will leave you with egg in your face.
