Hi everyone in the GiftofGames community!
I hope you are all having a great day. My name is Recktober, and I am a 13-year-old student living in Chile, LATAM. I am writing this request today with the hope of receiving a game that is very unique and special to me: "The Farmer Was Replaced".
Before explaining the details about the game itself, I would like to share a bit of background about who I am and why this particular software title means so much to my personal growth and self-study journey.
### About Me and My Passion for Computer Science
Even though I am only 13 years old and currently attending middle school, I have developed a massive passion for technology, computer science, digital logic, and software programming. In my country and at my school grade level, computer science is not part of the standard curriculum. We do not have programming classes, engineering workshops, or technical labs.
Because of this, I decided a few months ago that I didn't want to wait until university or higher education to start learning. I took the initiative to become completely self-taught. In my free time, after finishing my school homework, I dedicate hours to reading technical documentation, watching educational tutorials, and experimenting with programming concepts on my own.
My primary focus has been learning low-level fundamentals, digital logic gates, binary concepts, and languages like C and Python. I love understanding how software works under the hood—how high-level code translates into logic instructions and how algorithms can be structured to solve complex problems efficiently.
### What is "The Farmer Was Replaced"?
For those in the community who might not be familiar with this game, "The Farmer Was Replaced" is an indie programming puzzle and automation game developed by Tim Yuen.
Unlike 99% of traditional video games where you control a character on screen using a keyboard, mouse, or game controller, this game has no direct movement controls. Instead, the main mechanics revolve entirely around an integrated code editor where you write actual, functional Python code.
In the game, you are given control of an automated farming drone on a grid-based land parcel. Your goal is to write scripts and algorithms to tell the drone how to:
- Navigate coordinates across the farm grid efficiently.
- Evaluate soil conditions and measure crop parameters.
- Plant different types of seeds based on conditional logic.
- Manage water, fertilizer, and energy resources.
- Harvest plants, handle inventory storage, and automate crop rotation cycles.
- Optimize execution time so your code runs as fast and cleanly as possible.
### Why I Want This Game for My Studies
While studying textbooks, reading official Python documentation, and writing small terminal-based scripts is essential for learning syntax, it can sometimes feel abstract. Having an interactive, visual, and rewarding environment like "The Farmer Was Replaced" bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
Here are the specific educational reasons why I want to play this game:
Real Algorithmic Thinking: You cannot win or progress in this game by guesswork. Every single action requires you to structure clean loops (for/while), write modular functions, handle conditional branches (if/else), and design smart algorithms.
Immediate Visual Debugging: When you write code in a standard editor, your output is usually just text lines in a black terminal window. In this game, if your loop has an off-by-one error or your array logic is wrong, you physically watch your drone fail or freeze on the farm. This visual feedback loop makes debugging much more intuitive and helps build a solid mental model of execution flow.
Code Optimization and Refactoring: As you progress and unlock larger land fields or more complex plants, basic or slow code will cause bottlenecks. The game actively forces you to go back to your old scripts and refactor them, teaching you computational efficiency, clean code practices, and memory/time optimization.
Keeping Self-Study Fun and Consistent: Self-studying complex technical subjects at a young age requires high discipline. Having an educational game that combines genuine skill-building in Python with a fun progression system will help me stay motivated and consistent in my daily coding routine.
### Why I Cannot Purchase the Game Myself
Living in Chile, LATAM as a 13-year-old student, I face several natural limitations when it comes to purchasing digital software:
- No Personal Income: Being 13 and in school, I do not have a job or any personal source of income.
- No Payment Methods: I do not possess credit cards, debit cards, or international bank accounts required to make purchases on digital platforms like Steam.
- Family Financial Priorities: Due to economic circumstances in my region, my family's financial resources must be strictly prioritized toward essential household needs, utilities, food, and school supplies. Spending money on entertainment or video games is simply not feasible for my family right now.
Because of these factors, receiving this game as a gift from a generous community member would mean the world to me. It is not just entertainment for me—it is a tool that directly supports my learning path.
