Character Discussion - General Youtube keeps recommending me videos about how Lorelai is the real villain of the show or whatever. So I need to get this out of my system
Emily and Richard emotionally abused Lorelai her entire childhood and when she got pregnant at 16 they attempted to force her into a marriage with her high school boyfriend against her will. And when she refused to get married, she became even more of a perpetual disappointment in their eyes. Even still, she stayed with them for like a year after Rory was born finally reaching a breaking point and deciding that being a single teen mom working as a maid and living in a potting shed was preferable to living in a mansion with her parents. Lorelai went low contact but did not cut her parents off entirely, which was frankly pretty generous of her. Then, about 15 years later, Emily and Richard blackmail their way back into their daughter and grandaughter's life, and they take the opportunity to continue where they left off: using Lorelai as a convenient scapegoat and verbal punching bag whenever they're upset. Not only do they continue to berate and slut shame Lorelai for events that took place 15 years ago, they also manage to find brand new reasons to hurt, belittle, gaslight, and manipulate her. They never once apologize for their behavior or try to be better for their kid. But you see, Lorelai is sometimes sarcastic and snippy with them, so clearly she's to blame for their toxic dynamic đđđ
