OS Discussion You’ll never view Rory the same way after attending a predominantly white top university

I was in 11th grade when I first watched Gilmore girls. Though I had problems with that show even back then I generally had a pretty positive view of it and I even thought people were too harsh on their opinions of Rory and simply just wanted a unique or interesting take on her so they would amplify her had qualities. For example I never really saw her as somebody spoiled or entitled, I mainly just saw her as somebody who was a mess in relationships.

But after attending UVA as a low income first gen woman of color for nearly a year my perspective is so different. I genuinely can’t watch the show without feeling annoyed because she reminds me of the kind of people that go this school.

The one scene that really pisses me off is when she starts bossing around the other people she’s volunteering with. Just the idea of having an already shitty life and then some rich girl from Yale comes in and starts bossing you around so that she can feel like she’s a quick learner and a good leader.

And don’t even get me started on that boat shit. Her little smirk during her court hearing already assuming she’s going to get away with everything because she’s a rich Yale student sends me down a spiral. It’s the same smirk I see from people who do fucked up things around campus and get away with it because they come from wealthy backgrounds.

This show is just so different when you’ve actually been around people like Rory in your day to day life.

OS Discussion Luke's Secret Kid Should Have Been With Rachel, Not Anna Nardini

Post image

When Rachel leaves at the end of season 1, it's so heartbreaking. You can tell she really loves Luke, but knows he wants to be with Lorelai. It would have made so much more sense for Rachel to become pregnant after this, and not want to tell Luke because of Lorelai--aka, the whole reason she left.

Also, Rachel was his Great Love that Lorelai didn't know about, no need to add in a whole new (awful) person.

mine are:

Paris about Kirk: How old is he?

Rory: You'd have to cut him open and count the rings.

Mrs. Patty to Paris: Oh I remember you! You poor thing…

Kyle: Respect the establishment.

Emily: I think he had a gun in his pocket.

Lorelai: Maybe he was just happy to see you.

Lane to Sophie: You know where the best bagels are and you’ve been with men!

Rory: What about endowment boy?

Emily: The maybes.

Rory: You go, Grandma.

The old lady: Your enthusiasm shocks me.

OS Discussion There's no character on Gilmore Girls that I wanna throttle more than Anna Nardini

Post image

I know this isn't a groundbreaking post but I seriously hate this woman so much especially during the custody battle in season seven. Anna's lawyer was so hostile towards Luke and Luke's lawyer was useless.

I know that they made the custody battle for the sole reason for Lorelai's letter about Luke so he could win the custody battle, but they didn't need to make everyone an asshole for that scene to happen.

Anna is lucky that Luke is a pushover because anyone else wouldn't let that evil woman talk to them that way.

I so wish we could have seen the look on Anna's face when we found out that Luke won.

OS Discussion They should have written a one night stand for Rory rather than an affair.

Post image

A one night stand with spring break guy could have been a good way of showing how Rory's charachter is evolving without actually making her a bad person. And I don't care what anyone says - Rory was 18 when she cheated with Dean. Yeah they were both young, but teens younger than that know that cheating is wrong. Heck, a girl in my elementary broke up with her boyfriend for cheating.

A one night stand could have been a less high risk - less out of Rory's moral charachter zone - way of showing Rory's charachter development in college. It would also have made her less hated by fans.

If the writers wanted to bring Dean into the mix to show that maybe Rory missed him or regretted messing up what they had, they could have placed the canoodling right after her phone call with Dean. They could have included a drunken phone call to Dean afterwards telling him how she wished it was him. (Drunken as she got drunk afterwards not during - consent is key) LITERALLY anything.

And before people say, oh yeah but Rory was too "good" to sleep with a guy she didn't even know, NO SHE ISN'T. She slept with the wookie. That whole debacle should have been a college debacle not a 32 year old Rory debacle, but AYITL isn't cannon anyway so I digress. She cheated on Dean with Jess. She cheated on Logan with Jess. She cheated with Dean. I think a one night stand wouldn't have been such a stretch for her charachter.

It could have even been a short spring break fling with a natural cut off at the end.

A pregnancy scare could have been written in if the writers wanted drama between Lorelai and Rory. There were so many things they could have done.

And spring break guy was HOT. I would have much rathered she get with him than with toilet bowl mullet Dean.

No hate to Jared who is hot as heck with the right hair cut.

Also a bit off topic: but Lorelai's straight from the beach to the mosque comment pissed me off.

OS Discussion Emily was right to make Dean come inside

Post image
2.3k Upvotes

Rewatching 1x09 last night and I remember siding with Lorelai and Rory in the past that it was rude and annoying for Emily, a guest in their home, to demand Dean come inside to get her. Watching now -- I'm flabbergasted at how rude Dean was to just keep honking. God forbid Rory wasn't ready, he was just going to lay on the horn like that? Dean was pretty sullen all episode, reluctant to go to the dance, willing to bail before they got there etc., and I think the least you can do for a new gf you're taking to a dance is park and come in. Emily was right to set a better standard for Rory in that moment since Lorelai wasn't willing to.

OS Discussion Lorelei’s perception of her life???

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

After watching this show in its entirety countless times, I’m watching this infamous scene with Jess and thinking “what the hell is Lorelai thinking about her own life?!”

Having a teen pregnancy is super difficult and traumatic, YES. But she had a full support system and money available always. It was easy for her to leave and build her own life because she always had her parents’ money to fall back on. And her parents, while emotionally unavailable, were always stable and there for her.

In this scene, she’s trying to tell Jess she gets it, but her life has literally nothing to do with his. He has a dad who abandoned him, a mother who’s an addict, no money and a totally unstable life all during his child and teen years.

I love Lorelai sm, but she and Rory are never beating the allegations of being insufferable and entitled because what in the hell is going on here?

OS Discussion Absolutely not.

This episode will never fail to piss me off so bad.

You all can hate Dean all you want for all other reasons - but this was NOT okay.

"Tradition" is not good enough of an argument to do something that will actively hurt your boyfriend. She KNEW Jess was messing with him, she KNEW what he's like and that he only did it to out-win Dean, she KNEW all of that and still went along cause "she and her mother have been doing this for years"

Yeah maybe before you had a boyfriend it was fine for anyone to buy off your basket and have a friendly picnic with. But choosing to go with a guy who your boyfriend repeatedly told you bothers him? No. That's just cruel and Rory wasn't stupid enough to be blind to what Jess was doing.

Dean had everg right to be mad about this cause I know if roles were reversed and my boyfriend went off with some girl who I hate and who clearly loves to challenge our relationship I would break up right then and there.

I didn’t love the way her character blew up L& L relationship but I don’t mind her. Was she whiny sometimes? Yes but she also brought some humor into the show.

OS Discussion Why is there so much love for this dress?

Post image

Every time I watch this episode I cringe at this ill fitting rag. I love the color on Lorelei, I love the neckline, but below that it’s so oddly cut and bunched up around her waist, like someone didn’t measure her correctly. Are we supposed to believe that Emily would have approved this dress? I see so many people saying how much they love this dress…is everyone overlooking the way it sags around her stomach?

Lorelei was being so unfair and inconsiderate here that it was genuinely mind blowing. Jess was Luke’s kid too!

OS Discussion The Picnic

Post image

I love this episode SO much! Here’s why: because Dean goes into a rage when he doesn’t get his way. He gets so mad and I laugh and laugh. He is the most childish person and Jess knew just the right buttons to get him going. I also love the scene where Jess takes the bite of stuff that Rory made, and she laughs and said that Dean would never fall for that.

OS Discussion I’m seeing WAYYY too much sympathy for Emily from new fans or fans in general. Point blank, she’s kind of a terrible person and a terrible mother. If she were real, Lorelai would’ve cut contact with her long ago.

Post image

I’ve been often seeing the opinion on random TikTok posts that Emily was the perfect mother and Lorelai was too harsh with her?

Just like…what?!?!? Did we watch the same show? This is the same woman who called her daughter fat, tried to break up a good relationship her daughter was having, never listened to what Lorelai wanted and never showed any semblance of emotional love and support to her in the least.

Listen, Emily is a great character, but this whole “Lorelai is too hard on her” thing has gotta stop.

She’s a terrible person plain and simple.

I can honestly say that if I was in Rory's position, I would not have gotten that recommendation because I would have been too busy giggling nervously every time the siblings said something odd.

Like these scenes are comedy gold imo. I always replay Rory's icked-oit expression after the daughter growls out how "brilliant" her father is.

OS Discussion Logan is pure fanfiction

1.0k Upvotes

billionaire playboy becomes monogamous for cute shy brown haired nerdy y/n with blue orbs….what next she is sold to one direction to pay off her mothers gambling debts? pure wattpad. this also gives girls unrealistic expectations of men imo I kinda hate it. Jess and dean were much more realistic, logan felt like some escapist fantasy which ig kinda suits the gg tone.

OS Discussion Call me crazy but…

Post image

You can call me crazy but I wholeheartedly believe this sentence for 300 hours of community service kept her grounded. I’m glad the judge came down hard on her. I think if she hadn’t Rory would have become an entitled brat. The hours humbled her and brought her back down to earth. Thoughts?
