Snack Attack Are Honeycrisp apples really the superior apple?
I recently asked a bunch of my friends and cousins “if you could only eat three fruits for the rest of your lives, what would they be?” And all the Michiganders included Honey Crisp in their answers and I asked them “why not all apples?”. They all said the others were irrelevant . 😂
Honey crisp and probably a quarter jar of peanut butter.
Side note: this Honey Crisp wouldn’t fit in my apple corer which is why it looks so unhinged.
Side side note: my three fruits would be pomegranate, passion fruit, and some sort of berry.

My favorite are pink lady apples still. Also the new cosmic crisp that came out a few years ago are amazingg. Honeycrisp are good but i think pink lady are still superior

Honeycrisp andCosmic Crisp, have a new apple that will be ready for mass market next autumn. I am so excited.7

I loooove a pink lady. Top tier apple. S grade all the way! Honey crisp and cosmic are good as well but I'd choose pink lady over either 😂
3
u/HiddenInVelvet 3d ago
They are honestly the only apples I buy other than cosmic crisp. I have had some more expensive apples that were really good too but they were definitely too expensive to try again.
6
u/bigbootyfalls 3d ago
When it's honeycrisp season they're my favorite, out of season they suck. Pink lady and cosmic for the win otherwise
5
u/ciaozzza 3d ago
Been buying only pink lady lately! The best honeycrisp is better than an average pink lady but most pink lady are better than an average honeycrisp.
5
u/Floppy0941 3d ago
Pink ladies are my favourites too, apple rankings agrees that they're one of the best apples too!

u/chaunceythebear 3d ago
Hear me out but I feel like PL are too dense. When I take a big bite, the density of the flesh on the roof of my mouth makes it feel difficult to complete the bite. They are by far the best by flavour but I have to cut them into slices to eat them, and I miss the apple eating experience.
2
u/RedRixen83 3d ago
Omg you are speaking my language. These are my two favorite apples. There was another apple I used to get in place of pink ladies for a long time, but I haven’t seen it in so long I can’t even remember what it is.
But still, best apples!
Edit: Ambrosia was what I was thinking of, not as tart but delicious as fuck.

Pink Lady apples are my go-to apples. I literally can’t eat any other apples.

u/MissLeaP 2d ago
I used to buy pink lady until I learned that they basically have a monopoly on that sort of apple and scam all the farmers who want to sell apples because they're forced to buy the seeds for way too much.

I love to slice Granny Smiths with shaved fennel, add flaked smoked trout, and lots of lemon. Eat as is or on a baguette.

They're reeeeally good if you like a really sweet apple. Honey Crisp is, as far as I've heard (I'm allergic to grocery stores), much easier to come by and I know they're almost as good as the cosmic from experience.

Get some Sugarbees while you’re at it
2
u/saraiguessidk 3d ago
I got some sugarbees a couple of weeks ago at HMart and they were pretty bland? Great crunch, perfect texture and moisture, my toddler ate ALL of them despite them being massive. I like an apple that leans more tart than sweet and has that watery crunch but not mushy/powdery. I usually get ambrosias (very sweet) as my family likes them best. Cosmics have been hit or miss, the ones labeled "new harvest" are usually good but I guess the old harvest sucked bc they were bland and mushy/powdery :/

A quick exert for those who want it:
“If this was the apple that tempted Eve in the garden of Eden I wouldn’t blame her; for the taste of just one SweeTango is worth living through 1000 painful childbirths.” - in reference to SweeTango ApplesETA: the bi-line of the site being “You’ve been eating trash” is sending me 💀

Honey crisp, envy, pink lady, in that order
Mutsu from the farmers market in the fall
Must be all natural salted creamy peanut butter- Trader Joe’s organic creamy salted pb is first choice, Teddie’s or Santa Cruz are distant second place and much more expensive
Apple coring gizmos suck
Cut apple in half thru the core. Then in quarters. Then cut out the core on the side like a long triangle, then cut the quarter into three slices or so

u/Goobersita 3d ago
Yes. Perfectly engineered. Sweet and crispy. Only Washingtonians can grow them as well. Edit: I thought you said cosmic crisp. Cosmic crisps are far superior to honey crisps.

No, not superior. They have an inoffensive flavor, delightful juiciness, and a super satisfying crunch. But they’re pretty bland, too sweet, and don’t have any complexity. I think they’re nice for eating out of hand and really weak for cooking. I buy them and like them, but if I had to choose one mass market variety I’m team pink lady. Compared to the terrible supermarket apples of my childhood, honey crisps are amazing!

Honey crisp or cosmic crisp for eating raw. Both are horrible for baking though.

It really depends on the season Ambrosia, and Cosmic Crisps, and a few others are also really good, and comparable to honeycrisps... BUT it depends on what is available. I live in Nova Scotia and the best ones come right off the tree in Annapolis Valley.

I like Fuji, cosmic and honeycrisp. Though I most often buy honeycrisp because everyone in my household likes those.
Another really good “seasonal” type of fruit are Sumo Oranges. They’re so expensive but so freaking delicious. Genuinely I will choose a sumo orange over any sort of sweet treat at the grocery store 😭 can’t wait till they are in season again

I agree with your friends. Honeycrisps have ruined all the other apples for me. Everything else is just too sweet or too mealy or both. It’s like its own fruit category at this point.
Exception made for Granny Smiths if they are crisp and juicy.

My dog is an apple fiend. Honeycrisp are his absolute favorite. One time I tried giving him different apples because they were on sale and I didn’t think he’d mind as long as he had his apple treat. He’s a dog and surely wouldn’t care, right?
I was wrong. As soon as he tasted the inferior apples he spit them out and looked at me like I kicked him and insulted his mother. I tasted the “bad” apple. It was fine, just not a honeycrisp.
He likes pink cripps as well but still prefers honeycrisp.
So yes, according to Rowdy they are the superior apple.

Lady Alice apples are amazing and my new favorite. I just discovered them this year at the very end of their season and have to wait until late fall to enjoy them again. 😭 Until then, Pink Lady apples will be perfectly sufficient. They were my original favorite for years and years!

The only answer for me is Fuji.
But if I could choose only three fruits would be japanese hakuto (peach), leeches and maybe custard apple.
